As a fan of typography - loved to hear him talk about this and also Eric Gill and Gill Sans (even if he didn't do London Underground's type face, that was his mentor Edward Johnston)
Providing the reference numbers for the Berlin camo scheme is a perfect example of why these Q&As are so great, always looking out for us modelers, and the story itself is such a nice detail.
I've mentioned it before, but I do greatly hope these will continue regardless of the state of the world, the informal atmosphere makes for an extremely enjoyable and relaxing environment.

Went today with my eight year old boy, not my first time but his, he went to bed thanking me so much for his best day ever 👍I've got to say we were the first people through the door and spent five hours there and I can't speak any higher about the staff and the way they are dealing with current times . They'll be glad to know I need a second mortgage after going through the shop on the way out 😂but the fact that you pay once and can come back for nothing for a whole year is a fantastic deal 👍thanks for making my boys day to all the staff at the tank museum. I was at the Tiger Day on the Friday. Situated in the BLUE end of the area so David was a speck in the distance!
It was a fantastic day and I got to hug a Churchill, my favourite tank. Had a long chat with the driver who opened the doors so I could look inside. The display was exciting and I must have taken a hundred pictures and videos. To see the Churchill charging around the track made this 46 year old man feel like an excited little boy again. All the staff where amazing and very friendly. Spend about £100 in the shop getting all the beers , 2 Woodcraft Construction kits, Churchill book, bags and 3 sets of Top Trumps. I highly recommend the Centurion Cider. I will be back with my stepson for the next Tiger Day. I did try to get a Fin puppet but apparently only available on line so come next pay day..........
As for building things I am a railway modeller but have several of the COBI kits and can recommend them for young and old. David is right about the simple pleasure of building something. It gives you a little bit of calm and a sense of control in a maddening world.
Re: Ships firing at tanks. During the invasion of Sicily, H.M.S. Rodney, waiting offshore, was alerted to the approach of a German armoured column that could have threatened the success of the whole invasion. One salvo from its nine 16 inch guns and the arrival of the shells near the head of the column was enough to persuade the germans that they needed to be somewhere else, and quickly. 😁
I don't know if tanks were present at the time, but either HMS Nelson or HMS Rodney (I can't remember which) killed the commander of the Das Reich panzers while bombarding Normandy.
@@Calum_S If I'm remembering right, both HMS Nelson and USS Nevada had multiple tank kills on D-Day.

Thank you so much for answering the question about ear & eye protection! I've been wondering about that for a very long time, and can only imagine how LOUD it was, especially in those early models with the engine in the same compartment as the crews!

Yah! More of the frolicing Finn. The tank bits aren't bad either.
Tigerfibel is next on my list. Many of us, studying O-level German in the 1960's, were taught both to read and to write in Old German. As with the '60's O-level Latin course, these things also taught us to pay attention and to think. We were so much luckier than the German 16-year old conscripts in 1944.

My 6 year old son and myself had a smashing day at the museum last week. I got him the Cobi Tiger 2 tank which is just fantastic and I got a Tiger 1 Porsche model to build. Great days, love this place, see you again soon :)

I'm curious about what a WWII tank gunner saw when he looked into the sights of his gun. I've seen pictures of the reticles and it seems there were a few different types. Can you explain the sight picture of an M4 Sherman's gun versus that of a Panzer IV for example? I love these chats and it was very nice of you to do this after such a long, hot day. Bravo David! Bravo David! ;-)
I think comparisons of details like gunsights and suspension schemes would make great subjects for future tank chats. we hear Christie suspension and Horstmann suspension, but I would be interested to see a short chat discussing how they work.
Just finished reading 'Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare' which is a steal on the museum shop. Fantastic book, lots of information about the men and women behind some of the innovative weapons of WW2 and the bravery of the SOE volunteers.
Totally agree! It also covers some of the events in the Das Reich book (in summary) and gives some great background info if you're a fan of old war films - Heroes of Telemark, Gift Horse, and others too... Well worth a read! 😁
I went to the Tiger Day held on Friday (7th Aug 2020) and had an enjoyable day. It was great to see Tiger 131 out in the arena with a Pzkpfw 3, Comet 'Spud', Churchill 3 and the M3 Stuart 'Clemetine'. Plenty of photos were taken. Thanks to all the Museum staff and the volunteers who made the day a success.
I remember reading the Tigerfibel online once - the bit about how to save ammo was rather shocking. PS I bought one since its my birthday today.

To be both a train spotter as well as a tankie. Eric Gill produced his type face for the LNER, the typeface used on the London Underground and then by London Transport as a whole even now is the Johnston typeface
Gill sans and Johnston plus those humanist additons, a breath of fresh air. Hi5 for correct use of typeface not font.
Last week was my 50th, and a few weeks before my ex-wife asked me what I wanted, so I told her to look at the Tank Museum shop. She bought me a yard-broom and garden-waste burner! So I bought myself some bits and pieces from you 👍
Is that the equivalent of getting her a new iron and a socket set?
Russel Davis sort of, but please note the “ex” part. I thought those types of presents would stop after we separated (as good friends), but obviously not. I did get her a drill-driver for Christmas a couple of years ago, but she asked for it 😉

Thank you so much for these chats, they are helping keep me sane in these strange times. If I could ask you a question, the latest proposals for NATO's tank upgrades seem to include a 130mm gun and an auto loader, does this mean 120mm is the largest round that can be manually loaded, is a 10mm larger round really that much bigger and more unwieldy than the smaller one?

I think the problem is only with the single piece ammunition and as far as I know, most current tanks don't use single piece ammo. Chances are it's a push for crewless turrets...
10mm would change the volume considerably.
Re the "Berlin" Cammo. Mysef and my oppo in crime actually got to visit the NMM Soesterberg in the Netherlands last year. There was a cold war exhibition with a Chieftain in Berlin cammo. Both of us being ex BAOR had to get a pic next to it. I do not know where this Chieftain MBT came from, i assume it was from a private collection or Bovington. People in the Museum were amazed when we both started talking into the so called Infantry Phone on the back of the Tank. I never served Berlin but i can see why that cammo was used. Also the board game Colditz.....Played that as a young person, great board game, i think i may have to buy it again.

All the warships under British command had an artillery observer onshore. As they got wounded or killed a new one stepped in.
Even the destroyers were firing against area targets. I know that HNoMS Stord spent a long time targetting a crossroad to avoid that the Germans became suspicious about the area. When the German tanks arrived, they got a very warm welcome.

As a Dane, named "Finn", I of course have a special interest in "Finn"! But we have a Danish Travel Agency which also specialises in military travels (I took part in a tour to the similar Munster Panzer Museum, with - only a full-size, plastic model of a Tiger Tank!), and I asked for a tour to "The tank Museum"? But sadly they only have tours to a former Base and what I have seen already.
Love watching these videos, or the ones you've made about a certain topic. Keep it up!

I Googled the Berlin camo, it’s pretty effective. Also adding the paint colour codes and telling people the wheels and sprockets are black. That’s going the extra mile.

1:Just curious how was the Sherman DD's escape hatch, in the bottom of the hull, waterproof for swimming? 2: How many Archer SPG survive today?
Sorry I can't give a full answer, but you should look up the waterproofing proceedure for shermans. I need to read it all myself yet, but it goes into waterproofing for transportation and combat conditions. Sorry I can't do more than point you in the right direction, but at the moment I'm reading more on WW1 than 2. In the EXTREMELY unlikely event David or the mechanics can't tell you, hit up The Chieftain when he does a live premiere. He's great at answering chat questions.
I know there's an Archer tank destroyer in the Overloon ww2 museum in the Netherlands. I saw it being displayed.

Great presentation as always. Could you say a little about the support for the tanks in WW2 in terms of how they were maintained and how spare parts provision was organised both for routine items like lubricant and filters or spark plugs as well as more specialist items like radios. If a tank breaks down you can’t afford it being unavailable waiting a part but equally cannibalisation which always goes on in any vehicle fleet is a real headache if you don’t keep track of what parts you’ve stolen from where.

The balance between protection and efficiency. When the protection reduces the efficiency, the protection may do more harm than good , if it increases your chance of not detecting an enemy or of getting hit.
I have a couple of questions regarding the railway transportation of tanks during the Great War...
(1) Were the sponsons removed or were they pushed inside the body of the tank? (If removed, how were they transported?)
(2) If the sponsons were pushed into the tank, the guns would need to be removed, so would thay have been transported in the same train? If so, in what type of wagon were they transported in?
I was lucky to be able to attend Tiger Day last year. You should definitely go see it while it runs, which wont be forever...
I actually ended up going to one by accident. Wandered down to the museum with my annual pass, and discovered it was tiger day. This was back when they weren't a separate ticket, mind.
Ended up getting a great close-up of the Tiger in mud, and a great vantage point of all the other tanks going around in it.

I believe HMS Rodney (or possibly HMS Nelson) destroyed a unit of tigers that strayed too close to the coast.
Have been enjoying the sessions at home and have brought some books that you have shown. One question I have is that you haven’t done a Top 5 tanks video or even a bottom 5 tanks when is that going to happen?....might have to buy that damn Tigerfibel book now...

Hi David. Thank you for continuing these excellent Q&A’s. The work you and the team is doing to keep the tracks rolling is superb. A quick question from me on the off chance that this has not been covered previously. Presumably the decommissioning of armament and sensitive systems is undertaken by the owner of any hardware prior to it being despatched to the museum. I just wondered what is required of the museum on receipt and whether the team have ever had any nasty surprises whereby, perhaps with some of the older vehicles / exhibits, it has been discovered that such rigorous controls hadn’t been employed back in the dim and distant past? Many thanks David.
Hi David, it was great to meet you last Friday at Tiger day and thanks for encouraging my son Charlie to get into tanks! I have a question about gun development during WW2. With a gun seemingly a (relatively) simple thing in that they all have a barrel with a Loading mechanism I wondered why the allied countries took some time to catch up with the German 88mm. Could you describe the complexities and if it was the development of the ammunition which is the complex element or the gun it’s self? Or if the allies had similarly performing guns as the 88mm but just could not fit them in a tank design? Many thanks, Peter
Hello David, well done on these great chats you and your team are producing (especially Finn). Although it was a bit before my time in the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards the old and bold assure me that Clendon Daukes did not design the Berlin camouflage. Trooper Henry Wilks did.

Curator, please explain how the destruction of German, supply trucks in 1944 and 1945 would impede the German war effort. In example, the destruction of ammo supply trucks, would prevent not only the obvious tank counter offensive, but also local counter fire from mortars, artillery, tanks, rifles and more. All these would have dampered such plans. Patrols, AA fire and more all would have suffered, all adding up to a decrease in German/Nazi counter fire efforts. Even B-17's would have benefited to some degree. Not only ammo trucks, but any supply truck would have been destroyed....medical supplies, food, spare parts, fuel, replacement men, communications, and more.

Interesting about the Berlin camo, though. I'm looking for a good urban camo for my Imperial Guard regiment, so I reckon I'll do something like that. Most likely using blue rather than brown, though, because alien mud.

Its ironic that the Brits were worried about goggles and hearing protection yet refused to wear helmets inside their tanks leading to lots of head wounds from bashing their skulls against all that steel. Fashion over safety, can't give up their red berets to save their noggins.

Just thinking about somethng you said in a previous video. You were talking about how water, especially rain water has a nasty habit of getting in *everywhere* no matter much a crew tried to stop it. What did they and designers do to stop that playing havoc with the electrics, especially radios and the like?

So I was acutally curious about the Germans continually updating vehicles like the Sdkfz.234. It started with a 20mm? But went through nearly every other type of gun all the way up to a PaK-40? Why? I understand they were using it to support infantry as the StuG tanks were being used more and more as Anti-tank units, but going to the PaK-40 kind of ended the 234 in the same situation, didn't it?
I also recall in a more recent video by Hilary Doyal, that he believed the Maus "wasn't a bad vehicle", what're your thoughts on it? (Disregarding it was rather impractical, but as a tank itself?)

David talking about urban camouflage reminded me of a picture I saw some time ago of, I think, a Matilda II painted to look like a dry stone wall (presumably sun-baked bricks) somewhere during the desert war. I was strikingly convincing, but I've never been able to trace the image again, it may have been in the Tank Museum.

Hi David. Having recently picked up the Haynes manuals for Stug and Sherman, I have a question for you. There are lots of photos the Stugs and Shermans with spare road wheels, tracks, concrete, etc, acting as makeshift additional armour. Are there any accounts of such items actually saving a tank from serious damage?

Hello David. The Vickers MkVI light tank had a .5" vickers gun for taking on light armour. Is there any record of this being used and was it effective?

I think I recognise that stretch of river at the end, if You get off at Wool railway station and walk up to the Tank Museum you cross over it. Is that correct.
