The first war film I ever remember and still my favourite, but looking at it as an adult it has a surprising amount of realistic content: the way the troops deploy, the acceptence of casualties, Oddball's commands during the railway assault and his knowledge of the mechanics of a Tiger.
It also looks way more authentic as a comedy film than most of the serious war movies of the era: " we'll just put a swastika on a Sherman: that'll make it German",

In all honesty, what the Tank Museum is doing during Lockdown is really forward thinking and inspirational. Most museums, unfortunately, are not this forward with their marketing and community engagement. Here we have FREE content, practically every day, which is aimed at continuing support and spurring interest in this institution. As a burgeoning curator in the Military History field, I am inspired by this really revolutionary thinking on behalf of the Tank Museum. So glad you chaps are still working, and so thankful for this wonderful content.

I was nine when Kelly's Heroes was released. As a boy I used to sing "Every time I go to town - the boys start kickin' my dog around... ." I've seen it possibly a hundred times. Obviously one of my favorites. So many great scenes. My favorite scene is the one with the river crossing and the General is listening in. The one where the guys die in the minefield still chokes me up. Very affecting moviemaking - an ability beyond the capabilities of, it seems, modern filmmakers - though this is ostensibly a comedy. I introduced this film to my nephew (whose name is Kelly - he loved it) telling him that it's one of those films in which, after you've seen it, you wish you were one of the characters on the adventure! He went on to use a file of Burning Bridges by The Mike Curb Congregation overtop of his tank advances in some video game! Some years later I found a 45 record of Burning Bridges By TMCC in a thrift store. I still have it! WOOF WOOF!

Yes, you're right, it is a classic 'caper' movie of the late 1960's. Unlike a lot of them, though, it is a rewarding repeat watch. And I have, many times. My absolute favourite bit is when the German tank commander is told exactly what it is he's guarding. The look on his face is priceless. My brother had never seen it until a few years ago, and enjoyed it immensely. It doesn't do any good thinking too deeply about it - just enjoy the equipment, the action, and the great selection of top actors. Nice one.

There are two things I really LOVE about this movie:
    1) Most action movies have the heroes mowing down enemy soldiers effortlessly. It's cartoonish and stupid and doesn't interest me at all. Kelly's Heroes never shows the heroes winning "just because". When they win, it's because of superior tactics, and when they make mistakes, they suffer casualties. There's a scene where the squad totally massacres a larger German force- but it's preceded by at least ten minutes of tension as everyone moves into position. They win because of preparation, recon, surprise and some clever tactics. My favorite scene in a WW2 movie.
    2) It's not just an action comedy- it has a great underlying theme (we're all working joes, even the enemy soldiers, and the rich jerks who sent us to kill each other are the real enemy).

Like some comments have stated before: it's so great because the comedy doesn't come from the war, it takes the war very seriously and the humour is grunt-level satirical. So it's a proper war movie, a proper comedy and a proper heist movie. But most of all it is a very tactical film, some key scenes use actual tactics, and even the logistics are an important plot point.

Did Clint, Telly and Donald battle their way back to Coney Island after Cyrus was killed? Also, Cross of Iron, directed by Sam Peckinpah, was filmed in Czechoslovakia, lots of T34s, although 85s, set in 43. Lee Marvin fav. Edit James Coburn, what was I thinking?

I tracked down a copy in the early 2000s thanks to the many fans who recommended it on TankNet. After that, I picked up on so many references I would’ve missed. It’s one of my all-time favorite films now. Thanks for the detail on the filming in Yugoslavia, I had no idea that’s where they were shooting. It definitely looks the part on screen.

I first saw this movie in the early 80's when my father bought on VHS tape and i was cutting school one day and decided to watch it and fell in love with it right away and i'd say this is where my love of tanks started, the funny thing is how popular it still is with the fans but Clint Eastwood was not happy with the final cut of the movie, he was upset that scenes providing background to the characters was cut, i wish those scenes were still available i'd love to see them.

It is very much an Anti-Vietnam film in a WWII guise. I use it as an example of artistic license, in a historic setting - people seem to get very upset about Historical accuracy not everything needs to be 100% accurate.

The RR yard scene showed what Shermans were good at.
They had loudspeaker teams to use for propaganda but they only mounted those on light tanks, Jeeps, half-tracks and even made up a special truck just for that purpose. So it could have been possible to see one mounted on a Sherman - towards the end they would only mount those on a tracked vehicle.
Also thought Apocalypse Now ripped that scene off.

Mom and Dad loved this movie. Mom was a nurse during the Blitz. Dad was in the 6th Armored Division. The same division that Oddball's shoulder patch is for. The Tiger mock ups were well done. If not for the tracks and suspension, dead give away, it would be much harder to tell

For what it is worth; from the half dozen first person accounts I have heard, practically NONE of the dialog from Don Rickles' character (Crapgame) was in the script. Apparently on the very first day of filming Mr. Rickles (very much in his standard form) did not read from the script but instead made up his lines as he went and they were ALL better than the script. By the second day the director and writers just gave up and let him go...
Also; "hippies" in the 1940s were called "Beatniks" (no, really...)

When it comes to Tito's Socialist Yugoslavia and the foreign military aid he did sort of a "neutrality dance" - turn left, bow, extend hand, sidestep, turn right, bow and extend hand. That's why there are M4s and M10s serving alongside T-34s and T-55 and F-86 Sabres serving alongside Migs.

    • @Karvainenrotta
      @Karvainenrotta 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It's a bit beside the point, but Tito was also a huge film buff and tried his damnedest to make yugoslavian cinema(and those partisan warfilms of his brilliant leadership during WW2) an internationally recognized thing. To that end the yugoslavs were extremely accomodating to the western producers, just responding with "nema problema" "not a problem" and then scrambling to deliver what was promised.
