Also I would be remissed if I didn't mention Elton's lyricist, the amazing Bernie Taupin...it's Bernie that actually writes the lyrics but it's Elton who creates the music and usually can do it in a split second's time... Dude can write a song in less than 20 minutes and it will blow your mind...these guys are the true meaning of legends. ❤️
Great reaction to a great artist! I loved Elton up until the mid 70's then not so much. As well as having a great band, his writing partner was Bernie Taupin who wrote the lyrics. EJ was hugely successful globally, especially in the UK (where he's from) and in the US. 'Funeral for a friend' is very different from most of his work being instrumental and almost 'prog rock' but it is a great show opener! It was great to hear 'Have mercy...' it is one of my many favourites. The whole 'Don't shoot me.....' and 'Goodbye yellow brick road' albums are both amazing and for me his best work. Cheers.
Greetings to an Elton John fan!!! I'm SO HAPPY you are appreciating Elton. I am BEGGING YOU to listen to the entire album of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" from 1973, all the way through (It is a 2 record set in LP's) This album changed everything for Elton and all of us fans - AND YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST listen for the quality of the recordings - The compositions, Elton's vocals, the mixing of the tracks, the production value. THE VERY BEST!!!!!
This live version of Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is from 1980. Middle period Elton. Elton had already been out for ten years by then. The songs were from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, from 1973.
@@debjorgo not so. Elton came out partially in 1976 in a Rolling Stone interview. He said he was bisexual so it had only been four years. I have it the article on my computer. The interview took place after he wrapped up several sold out performances at Madison Square Garden in NYC that summer. Article was called "The Lonely Life of a Superstar".

I was 16 when I saw Elton John for the first time. My opinion about him was based on his pop stuff, most of which was not my kind of music. His older stuff and ability to bring it to a live audience make him unique.
I was in high school and college in the '80s and I'd heard Elton John pretty regularly on radio. I liked a lot of the songs (but not all) and that was it. My college roommates decided to take a train to New York to see him live because .. why not? And live you just get one great song after another, banger ... banger ... another banger. That was when I realized what a legend Elton is. I later read an interview with him and he talked about that show as taking place at his lowest moments in life, he felt fat, unloved, he thought his performances were awful. And I was like 'wait... we all thought it was really good!'
Elton John is an amazing song writer, musician, and performer... Bernie Taupin's lyrics are unparalleled, and the original EJ Band with Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone created a sound that topped the charts for years
Hey T, glad you liked them. I haven't steered you wrong yet. Both songs were released in 1973. He was 75 in that 2022 live performance. Most people know his pop / pop rock stuff, but he's got stuff that he jams on. Davey Johnstone is a great guitarist and very underrated. Dream Theater did a great cover of Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.
I'll tell you how high a regard Elton John has for Davey Johnstone. . .he's the musical director for the band. Awesome guitarist. Check out "Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting" from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and "The Bitch is Back" from Caribou to get the full flavor of the distinctive guitar sound that Davey throws into the mix! Know I'm not a Patreon member, but you'll kick yourself if you don't react to these two songs!!!!
Have Mercy features Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on drums. Davey was NOT at the Central Park concert but Nigel was. Nigel started with Elton way back in 1969. Davey joined the band in 1972. The two of them have played on the majority of Elton concerts for the past half century and can still rock with the best of them.
In 2022, we got to see Elton John in concert for his farewell last tour performance in the US at Dodger Stadium. that 2022 concert at dodgers stadium was aired on Disney plus. After Elton John won an Emmy for that televised performance at Dodger stadium. So now Elton John is an E.G.O.T. winner.
My 21st birthday 1979 at ASU Activity Center 4th row and he was in his Uncle Sam outfit and he busted up his piano bench. It was wild and such an outstanding way to turn 21 years old. Memories!!!
I also recently discovered Elton and his band, and that's a good thing because if I knew what these people were doing outside of MTV, I probably wouldn't listen to other musicians 🤣You might like Elton John - Rocket Man (Live Sydney Entertainment Centre 1986) ❤With Davey Johnstone, Elton John - The King Must Die (Live in Sydney with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra 1986), Elton John - Bennie and The Jets - Wembley 1984, Elton John - Hercules (1976) Live at Earl's Court, London, Elton John - Madman Across The Water (BBC Sounds For Saturday 1971), Elton John - Indian Sunset (BBC Sounds For Saturday 1971), Elton John - Levon (1971) Live at BBC Studios, Bennie and the Jets - Elton John - Live in London 1974 , Elton John - Rocket Man (Royal Festival Hall, London 1972), Elton John - Your Song (Top Of The Pops 1971), Elton John - Sixty Years On (Live in Japan 1971), Burn Down The Mission (Incl. My Baby Left Me / Get Back)
THIS IS THE SHOW I WAS AT T, THE 1ST NIGHT ( DODGER STADIUM ) FAREWELL YELLOW BRICK ROAD TOUR 👍😊HE WAS JUST AS GOOD AS HE WAS BACK 52 YEARS AGO ENTERTAINING WISE💯, OF COURSE HIS VOICE HAD CHANGED, IT CHANGED BACK IN 90 WHEN HE HAD HIS VOCAL CHORDS WORKED ON! 😮BUT HE STILL SOUNDED GR8888 T!
One of the great rock anthems of all time. And you can compare it Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody but Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding was released in 1973. Bohemian Rhapsody two years later!
Bernie Taupin is the lyricist, Elton writes the music. I've often wondered if they hadn't met, would either have been very successful. Elton did a couple of records with other writers that were not quite as successful. But the two of them.... a dynamite combination. As a life long Elton fan, I have most of his stuff, and for me, most of his best stuff isn't what you hear on the radio ... like Have Mercy on the Criminal.
THIS SONG IS THE 1ST TRACK OFF OF HIS EPIC 73 DOUBLE ALBUM ( GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD ) 😊THE HITS ON IT WERE : CANDLE IN THE WIND, BENNIE AND THE JETS, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD & SATURDAY NIGHTS ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTING 👍
Elton John top of the heap musician and performer! Hell of a history. My go to album is Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Hope you check it out.
You have been taken to school by one of the best piano players and singers of our time!! And actually Bernie Taupin wrote most of his lyrics over the years.
He was good friends with Freddie Mercury. You might want to react to Elton's number one hit with George Michael. The two of them Live in Concert. It's a cover of one of Elton's own hits. Elton took it to Number two in 1974, and Elton and George took it to #1 in 1992. It's called "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me".
I know my post is late but... For this particular song, Queen meets Billy Joel (speaking of, can't recall if Billy Joel has gotten any attention on the channel yet - if not he should go on the list). As others already said, lots of great Elton John material to check out. "Levon" is a personal fave.
The original recordings of these songs from "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" were recorded when he was about 25-26 years old. . .think on that one for a minute. He used to sing effortless falsettos, but the years and a throat operation and a singing coach taught him to sing the tenor voice he uses in his later years. Also good to see his classic lineup of Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on the drums, whose drumming I absolutely adore! The only one missing from the classic linup is Dee Murray, who, sadly passed away in 1993. In any case, the enormous discography of Elton John represents a rabbit hole that if you go down it, you may never come out! But I don't think you'll mind, and I certainly won't! Here's hoping that you take the Elton John journey!!!
Now go listen to Have Mercy On The Criminal studio version. Back when he could sing and hit high notes. It's actually one of his best tunes. Anything from '68 - '76 is his best work.
*"Daddys Little Girl"* - Dr Hook *"Look At Me"* - Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush *"See Forever Eyes"* - Prism *"Spanish Train"* - Chris de Burgh *"If The Wind Could Blow My Trouble's Away"* - Murray Mclauchlin *"Followed Her Around"* - Jimmy Rankin *"My Name"* George Canyon ( *"Drinkin' Thinkin'"* is another good one especially with it's official video) *"Let Go The Line"* - Max Webster *"Things I Do For Money"* - Northern Pikes ( *"She Ain't Pretty"* ...with video😊) *"The Superman Song"* - Crash Test Dummies ( *"Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm"* ... yes, that's its title😊)
My teenage boyhood idol! I still think Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is one of the greatest recorded tracks I have ever heard, and for me personally his best work ever. I know this is live, so this will be interesting. The second part, "Have Mercy" I'm guessing may be "Have Mercy on the Criminal" from his album "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player." So this should be interesting. One thing I have noticed, as I've seen Elton John's live performances before is I've been very impressed by the quality of the music live. Very good sound engineering, better than many other bands I've heard live and been disappointed with. This should be interesting! Let's go!!!!!
I DON'T BELIEVE MY EYES, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, IS THIS YOUR GUYS 1ST TIME WITH ELTON FINALLLYYYYY??? 😮😊MY FAVORITE ROCK SONG OF ALLLLLL TIME FOR 50 YEARS PLUS NOW T, HOPE YA LIKE IT AND MUCH MUCH MORE FROM ELTON AND BERNIE! 👍
Thank you for liking my reaction request. I don't know that I've seen anyone react to this or Have Mercy On The Criminal, and I noticed he never reacted to Elton John. So I had him react to 2 of my faves.
A better introduction to Elton John would be Rocket Man or Tiny Dancer (Live on the BBC from 1972) or Saturday Night's Allright for Fighting or a number of others. Best version of Funeral For a Friend is the Live in Madison Square Garden One Night Only concert. Or go ahead and listen to the studio version on the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album. Elton John is the fourth biggest selling act of all time, behind Elvis, The Beatles, and Michael Jackson. He has had more top ten hits in the U.S. than any solo artist. He has sold somewhere around 300 million records in his career.
T, is a metalhead. I specifically chose this song for him to react to because it's not all of the same pop rock songs that people react to. This song has almost a prog rock vibe and jams. I love EJ and have seen him live, but I love his stuff that rocks.
Bro Elton John studio is good but Elton John live is a whole different monster. I love Davey Johnstone A LOT but do check out Elton just solo with his piano as well as the whole Elton John band with an orchestra, they are all mindblowingly good.
Hey T - some other great live performances to check out -- "Philadelphia Freedom" (Madison Square Garden 2007). "Rocket Man" (Madison Square Garden 2007) "Crocodile Rock" (Madison Square Garden 2007) "Someone Saved My Life Tonight (Japan 2001)
Best song off his best album. It's great when he starts the live show with this. Berzerkely Greek Theatre summer 1984. Only F----n $20 "I wonder if those changes have left a scar on you, like all those burning hoops of fire that you and I passed through. You're a bluebird on a telegraph line, I hope you're happy now. With the wind of change comin' down your way girl, you'll make it back some how." SIR Elton John is retired now.
One of Davey's best guitar work is on "Saturday Night's Allright for Fighting" and "Funeral For a Friend" but he didn't play on the Central Park performance. About ten years ago, Elton's guitarist Davey Johnstone played a couple of songs with Little Richard. Richard asked Johnstone, "Man! Where Are You From?". Johnstone replied, "From Scotland". Little Richard replied, "The BLACK part of Scotland??" ROFL.
In terms of appearance, later on that Central Park concert, he's wearing a Donald Duck costume while playing. He used to be known for the outrageous costumes, but toned it down (relatively speaking :P) after the mid-80s.
I think I heard “believe” but even then I didn’t know who he was. I’ve always known of him because of his face and status but never listened to his music.
@TheAdventuresofTNT If you enjoy unique melodic pop and rock, Elton John and Bernie Taupin can't be beat. Take it in as a ongoing course, release by release starting in 1970. You'll be amazed where we this music will take you.
Please react to Elton John live in Sweden 1971 parts 1 and 2...then react to Elton John solo with Ray Cooper from 1994..either Take Me to the Pilot or Indian Sunset
Funeral For A Friend and Love Lies Bleeding are separate songs. Hence the slash. But they are played together as one. Those were good choices of songs. Not the top hits, which are plenty, but really good early Elton songs.
Live version is OK but it loses the ambience the studio version has-I would advise listen to the album cut on the goodbye Yellow Brick road album (his best by the way) and also follow that up with candle In the wind-Elton's tribute to Marilyn Monroe and then the electrifying bennie And the Jets.
This probably wasn't the best introduction to Elton you could have. I've seen him live 6 times so I'm definitely a fan but neither of these songs are on my playlist...not bc they're bad...most certainly not...he just has so many great tunes that are better IMO
T, is a metalhead. I specifically chose this song for him to react to because it's not all of the same pop rock songs that people react to. This song has almost a prog rock vibe and jams. I love EJ and have seen him live, but I love his stuff that rocks.
Good version but far from the best. I suggest "Live in Madison Square Garden-One Night Only" from the year 2000. The video quality is excellent, and its a very tight high energy performance that rocks the house. One of his best performances ever. And I've seen several dozen versions of this.
AGAIN T, IF YOU WANT TO HEAR THE ORIGINAL HAVE MERCY, THIS IS OFF OF ( DON'T SHOOT ME, I'M ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER ) THE 2 BIG HITS OFF OF THAT WERE : DANIEL & CROCODILE ROCK 😊 HOPE YOU ENJOYYYY!👍

The studio version is much better as has the original lineup and production 😊
Hey T - some other great live performances to check out --
"Philadelphia Freedom" (Madison Square Garden 2007).
"Rocket Man" (Madison Square Garden 2007)
"Crocodile Rock" (Madison Square Garden 2007)
"Someone Saved My Life Tonight (Japan 2001)
Sweet Painted Lady
Best song off his best album.
It's great when he starts the live show with this.
Berzerkely Greek Theatre summer 1984. Only F----n $20
"I wonder if those changes have left a scar on you, like all those burning hoops of fire that you and I passed through. You're a bluebird on a telegraph line, I hope you're happy now.
With the wind of change comin' down your way girl, you'll make it back some how."
SIR Elton John is retired now.
Seriously, look up his performances on The Muppet Show. Hes in the big flamboyant outfits and shows his sense of humor interacting with the Muppets.
You need to listen to the studio version
In terms of appearance, later on that Central Park concert, he's wearing a Donald Duck costume while playing. He used to be known for the outrageous costumes, but toned it down (relatively speaking :P) after the mid-80s.
Alice in chains - nutshell
Type O Negative - love you to death
Iommi-Time is mine
React to Cain - Tiamat. It was also a part of the videogame Bloodlines
Yep he a good one, sits at #10 of the all time best selling artists, 1 ahead of Led Zeppelin for some context.
Wow, if it's true you've maybe heard one Elton song? How does that happen? Start from 1970 and take it in like a music course (and trip)
AHHHHH YESSS, ELTON DURING HIS DRUG DAYS T, MAINLY COKE AND DRINKING OF COURSE THAT WHOLE 70'S DECADE! 👍😊GREAT TIMES T THEY WERE!
Funeral For A Friend and Love Lies Bleeding are separate songs. Hence the slash. But they are played together as one.
Those were good choices of songs. Not the top hits, which are plenty, but really good early Elton songs.
Benny and the Jets, Crocodile Rock, Pinball Wizard, Candle in the Wind,
Live version is OK but it loses the ambience the studio version has-I would advise listen to the album cut on the goodbye Yellow Brick road album (his best by the way) and also follow that up with candle In the wind-Elton's tribute to Marilyn Monroe and then the electrifying bennie And the Jets.
Follow the yellow brick road.. you won’t regret it💯
This probably wasn't the best introduction to Elton you could have.
Then why haven't you turned him on to Elton John yet if you know what's best?
You should react to the song called Grandma Cremation by a band Cumbeast, think you'd love it and the music video also.🤘🏻
This song is from about 1973..
Where you been bro?!
On a whole different subject, can you react to Promise Me and or The Other Side Of The World by Luther Vandross.
React to Your Song by Elton
Please search for Dream Theater's live cover version Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding, definitely worth of it.
You have to hear the original winning was younger
Do it right. Listen to entire cds or however. Same with Beatles.
Good version but far from the best. I suggest "Live in Madison Square Garden-One Night Only" from the year 2000. The video quality is excellent, and its a very tight high energy performance that rocks the house. One of his best performances ever. And I've seen several dozen versions of this.
Now, watch Metallica doing same song in Washington, DC in March, 2024 !! ✌
TICKING. Bernie Taupin does the Lyrics,
You seriously need to listen to the studio version. This doesn't do it justice.
AGAIN T, IF YOU WANT TO HEAR THE ORIGINAL HAVE MERCY, THIS IS OFF OF ( DON'T SHOOT ME, I'M ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER ) THE 2 BIG HITS OFF OF THAT WERE : DANIEL & CROCODILE ROCK 😊 HOPE YOU ENJOYYYY!👍
Check out Metallica doing this live in front of elton
Studio version is alot better
Please, can you both react to "Indila - Dernière Danse (Clip Officiel)".
Without your wife...
...
It was a Patron request and patron didn't request for my wife to be in it.
Brought to you by gargantuan talent and massive quantities of cocaine ; ).
pops version liberatchi hes only ever done one memorable song and then her turned around and shit on it.
Crocodile rock
🙄😲Oh no!! You have to listen to his 70's songs!! Before he came out the closet!!😁
