@@UnderstoodOrg It really frustrates me that almost everyone in the medical field is saying things that make it seem like only children have ADHD. I'm a college student and I have met people who have basically just told me that I couldn't have ADHD because I was a college student. I never had this problem in elementary school. I never had this problem in middle school. I rarely had this problem in high school. I have this problem frequently in college. Please stop with the framing of ADHD as a children's thing. Thank you.

Sometimes i doubt myself of my suspicions of having adhd... like what if im just lazy and for some reason i just copy all the symptoms, what if all my worrying and research is for nothing and turns out im just a normal kid, what if its true and im just making up excuses, getting dumber every year and getting bad grades because of it. I dont know what to think anymore, and if i tell my parents i think i have it, then we do a test and turns out i dont, they would be disappointed and probably expect greater of me again, they would think im attention seeking and think im acting dumb to look for an excuse for bad grades. They would say i can control everything and i just dont want to. I want to tell my doctor i think i have it but if i don’t, my parents will get really mad. I dont know what to do

I keep finding things about myself that point towards me having ADHD but whenever i bring it up with my parents they say that that's totally normal and everyone has it and they have those problems too sometimes... but not being able to keep my room tidy at 19 seems kinda unusual to me. also failing one class but totally aching the other because the other is just way more interesting and i can actually focus on the lessons (even though i still zone out a lot, especially when the teacher repeats stuff we already discussed). I can't study for more than half an hour at a time (except if it's something i really like learning about) and even if i remove distractions like my phone, books, drawings etc. i still end up distracted and frustrated because i got nothing done. But hey, "totally normal."

Hi Whereis61 ?, Thanks for your comments. What you're experiencing isn't as uncommon as you might think. You might enjoy reading the article "The story of my ADHD evaluation in college" u.org/3keHKjA
Adult evaluations for learning and thinking differences must be completed in person by a qualified professional, like a psychologist, doctor, or learning behavior specialist. This can be done at a community mental health agencies, counseling or study skills center at a local college or university, or a local hospital-based program.
Here’s some information on who can evaluate adults for learning and thinking differences: u.org/2yeNiZq
If the evaluation is not covered by your insurance or if you don't have insurance, there are two other things that could help you find an evaluation at a reduced cost:
      1. Find out if any local universities with graduate programs in special education or psychology have clinics that conduct evaluations. These are often offered at substantially reduced cost.
      2. Check with your local county or state adult education office. They may know of private practitioners who perform evaluations on a sliding scale or at reduced cost.
You may want to consider connecting with these organizations in your area:
      LDA: ldaamerica.org/support/state-local-affiliates/
      IDA: eida.org/ida-branches/
      We hope this helps.

Thank you!

You may be, you also may not be... but self awareness should never be discounted. Even if you are not diagnosed with ADHD, I think that if you started educating yourself on it and learning some of the technics we are taught to live with it, you will find it helpful in your daily life as well.
Information and education is never a waste. It is only wasted if you do nothing with what you have learned.
You will find a way, don't stop until you have an honest fit. Be honest with yourself, love yourself, and forgive yourself; then can you fly to unstoppable heights.

I get anxiety at the thought of speaking up in situations where I’m struggling. I’m sure my dissociation, distraction and procrastination are obvious but they are pretty common things in a teenage student. You should talk to your GP my guy, be your own advocate especially since you are so close to 18... you are old enough to make your own path and you don’t have to wait for anyone to give you permission before you at least start trying. Ok; what matters most here is you! Your life. What you like, and what you don't like. If you are diagnosed...GREAT! Educate, form a plan, and move forward head held high. If you are not and diagnosed with something else, the same thing applies. The fact that you are here, viewing this, and thinking about this shows your incredible level of self awareness. DO NOT STOP THAT! Even if you are not diagnosed with anything... that's OK! Being self aware is such an incredible sign of compassion and never should be extinguished by fear or self judgement. Others incorrectly judge all the time to try to compensate for their shortcomings... so why do it to yourself as well? Own the amazing, intelligent, accomplished and beautiful soul that you are, and don't ever stop believing in yourself. The hard part is convincing yourself, maintaining that daily, figuring out what you want out of life and figuring out what you need to do to get it. Not easy, and not impossible. The choice, however, is yours.

This is gonna be quite long but I think I'll finally let it out.
After thinking for a long time, I finally built up the courage to try to research if I have adhd. I feel scared that maybe I'm just lazy and I have absolutely the shortest attention span. Like the people in this comment section have said, what if I'm just trying to justify me being lazy? I can't explain how much this has been bothering me lately. It's not that I get bad grades, in fact, I would say I go through such an unnecessary way to get a 100 on my tests, but when i do get low grades, I beat myself up and say that I'm such a disappointment and that I can do better. Most of the feeback i got from my teachers are that "She's very smart but just needs to focus more... " or "She's fun to have at class but encourage her to have a better work schedule." I tend to daydream a lot, LIKE A LOT. At night i usually take around 1-2 hours before actually sleeping. And what's worse is that i wake up at any random time during the night (This happens daily), to THINK and it also takes about 1-2 hours of me just thinking of random scenarios. I also feel bad because i feel like I'm not trying hard enough at school. I know i have so much potential but It gets wasted so much by the amount of procrastination i do. I feel worse because my mom cares deeply about me and I know she wants to help me, yet i become an ass and push her away and tell her that I can do it and that i have self control to finish my tasks, but in reality i rarely have any self control. As I'm typing this I'm currently trying to finish my homework that was due a few days ago (Our way of school works differently lol) I have online classes in less than 2 hours and I fear that I'm gonna zone out and just get distracted as the teacher speaks and I don't want to set aside the work that my teacher does just for us to have classes.
Well that's my rant. I RARELY comment EVER since I overthink what to write, but for the first time I actually have the courage to just say what I feel. Thank you for this video it really helped me. Reading the comments helped me realize that I'm also not alone! lol If anyone read though this entire thing and if you're struggling right now, I believe you can get past it! And I hope you get the help you need!

I’m also someone who’s now looking into signs of adhd for myself. I’m chronically late to things because I try to do things last minute or think I have more time than I actually have among other things. I also keep relating to videos of people talking about their adhd. One thing that has helped with school is actively testing to be interested in whatever I’m learning. I think about how the information can be useful or relevant to me. I also like relating what I learn to other subjects or outside information. Although I don’t know if I have adhd or not, I made a big comeback in college, going from a semester with a C and D with the other classes being Bs to consistently getting Bs and As in most classes. Also, I used to never comment either but it’s really not anything serious.

Wow. So it’s not my fault. I’m not lazy. I’m not disappointing. I just most likely have adhd. I’ve been failing classes and procrastinating on assignments and my parents have been so mad at me lately. They always tell me I can do better. I’ve been so stressed out thinking I was just lazy. I have cried so many nights and I have just been so mad at myself. I took 2 online quizzes and they say there is a 95 percent chance I have it. I don’t want to self diagnose myself, but like I can feel it. Its like the feeling I had when I thought I had ocd, and then I was diagnosed. I’m too scared to tell my parents because they will just say “you’re just making up excuses” or something..

I'm too afraid to ask my mom to get me tested because what If its wrong? Shed be so disappointed in me. I'd just be "lazy" and "stupid" if it turns out negative. My bad grades would be because of lack of intelligence then. I don't want to feel embarrassed. I'm in a rabbit hole of questioning whither I have it or not and it makes me really sad and mad. I remember when I was being given a psych evaluation for therapy, the psychiatrist asked if I have any existing disorders or mental illnesses and I mentioned that I might have ADHD because as a child I was given medication for it. (the meds did their job but got me horribly sick so I ended up being held back a grade because I missed so many days at school) This lady instantly looked so annoyed with me and her attitude completely changed as soon as I said that. She then asks me like three questions and then tells me that I don't have ADHD and then concludes the evaluation and I got confused because surely there has to be a more thorough evaluation for that, right? She must've seen my confusion because she said "This is the official diagnostic for ADHD." it felt so passive aggressive too. So now when other psychiatrists ask if I have any existing disorders or mental illness I just say that I don't to avoid another situation like that. Even though what I experience do line up with ADHD.

Keep in mind that I don’t know anything about you, where you live, your health situation. Do your own research, I may not have given 100% accurate info.
But as someone who is a teen and is in the process of scheduling an ADHD eval, here’s a bit of an info dump that I hope is at least a little helpful from my past two weeks of research on this:
You should get an appointment (even better: a lot of doctors have virtual visits now, which makes it WAY easier and less sus!!) with your primary care doctor, who can help you get an appointment with a psychologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, whatever. Obviously, this costs money in most cases... you can pay out of pocket, but you probably won’t want to. You can also get an appointment and a referral from your school counselor, or even a school district psychologist (some areas have those). But if you’re going to your main doctor, you probably want insurance to cover it:
Try to get as much information as you can, preferably your insurance card (or at least your Social Security number and the phone number of your insurance company) and the phone number of your doctor. If you’re concerned about confidentiality, call your insurance and ask what options they have for minors.
Now if you happen to be 18, file a Confidential Communications Request and you’re good to go. However, states have really varying laws with minors. For example, as a minor I can get free completely confidential reproductive services in CA, but I have a lot more loopholes with mental health. Your insurance company and doctor’s office can help you out with that.
There are two things you get either in the mail or email (hopefully mail because unless you have the insurance login of your parents/their email login you’re screwed, at least where I live in CA): claims and explanation of benefits. Claims might get sent (either in the mail, or email, or text, or nothing, whatever communication preferences your parents have set), and they’re basically saying “the insurance company is processing the cost of your appointment”. The explanation of benefits comes after the claim, and basically mentions where you received care, when, and how much insurance covered. You can ask your insurance company what the communication preferences are on your parent’s account and start from there (don’t worry, they’ll be helpful!!). Also, if you don’t want your parents to find out, make sure to call your doctor before scheduling any appointment and tell them to contact ONLY YOU, NOT your parents/when making an appointment, specify that it is CONFIDENTIAL and you want them to call only you.
If you don’t do that last thing, your doctor might just assume to call your parents because most teens don’t want to talk about this scheduling and insurance stuff with their doctor. That happened to me and while it was fine, it’s obviously a preference thing (and if your parents are not on board then... might be your only option).
Lastly, if everything goes well and you get diagnosed and are considering medication, you have a few options:
      1) Talk to your parents.
Yeah, they’ll probably/definitely be mad. But you took control of yourself, you know yourself enough to go to the doctor and advocate on your behalf. A proper diagnosis might sway them, and if it doesn’t, it will be uncomfortable. It will pass but it might damage your relationship... that’s for you to gauge (but just saying, I thought my parents would be COMPLETELY opposed to medication when I talked to them and it turns out with some persuasion and ignoring passive-aggressive comments, they are willing to find out). And if you have them, you can even talk about prior mental health issues and why you think you should see if ADHD has anything to do with them.
      2) Pay out of pocket
I looked up generic Adderall prices the other day on the website Goodrx, where they have coupons for medication. It really wasn’t that expensive... I think (discounted) a pretty hefty EXTENDED dose was like $20 a bottle, and lasting for a month. Obviously that might not be accessible to you depending on whether or not you have a job/allowance/a relative willing to pay for your medication, but it’s an option.
      3) Pay for medication with insurance
This would mean dodging more calls, emails, texts, or mail. Probably the most risky option because your parents catching you would not be very epic.
And finally, this is a reach but....
      4) Getting a short-term/student health insurance
These insurances are cheaper and for a shorter term than regular insurance. I haven’t done research into it so you’d have to find out if minors are even eligible for it + how much it costs.
I hope your state has good minor laws regarding access to mental health care, some states just don’t!!
Anyway that’s a lot, but it’s better to find that out in one place than have to look everywhere like I did the past couple weeks :))) good luck to both of us in our diagnoses!

      Hi,
Thanks for reaching out. Many people discover they have learning and attention issues as an adult.
Adult evaluations for learning and attention issues must be completed in person by a qualified professional, like a psychologist, doctor, or learning behavior specialist. This can be done at a community mental health agencies, counseling or study skills center at a local college or university, or a local hospital-based program.
Here’s some information on who can evaluate adults for learning and attention issues: u.org/296krKp

I got my diagnosis last year. Sad thing is, I didn't get it at first. To receive the diagnosis, it's important that the symptoms have been present in childhood as well as adulthood. When asked about the childhood, I was reluctant to answer, because it felt unreasonable to talk about how I was 20 years ago, as if such memories could be trusted. Rather than imploring me to try and answer, the very young psychologist assistant was sympathetic to my point and told me that it made 100% sense, rather than underlining the importance of at least trying to answer these questions. I was dumb enough not to recognize what it meant only relying on my mother to testify about my childhood.
My mother, who fits all the criteria of ADHD also didn't know of my issues when interviewed. The reason is that she was busy with my brother 3-4 hours each day. I managed school on my own, of course I wouldn't bother my mother and brother who were crying by the desk in the kitchen. She was ashamed, almost resentful, viewing me as an awful waste of my gifted brain because I was "lazy" and "unmotivated", despite constant promises and a clear desire to do better.
I got my investigation back, and it said I didn't have ADHD because there was a lack of foundation that the problems had persisted from childhood. While I knew why, it still felt as confirmation that I was just, in fact, lazy and unmotivated.
I spent the following month reading everything I could find surrounding ADHD, going through all school items available form the time, in an attempt to build a somewhat relevant foundation. I wrote 4 different essays on 10 pages each, where I broke down every single fallacy in the report, I failed my final courses of my vocational education because I could not drop the subject. I retook the DIVA test on my own, writing way too long answers on each criteria even in childhood, explaining why and how they were present problems even then.
In reality, I just had to complement the interview, not that big of a deal. But the way it was phrased made me lose it, as she stated that I was just understimulated in elementary school, leading to my poor performance, and that I was simply unable to focus as an adult because of a turbulent home, living with my brother with diagnosed ADHD and a mother who fits all the criteria. On top of this my father also fits all the criteria, and my grandmother as well as cousin have been diagnosed with it. It felt as if she was unable to connect very obvious dots on her own.
Overall, the process was a hell for me, but I now have medication and have managed more in 2 months than I could've imagined.

I was assessed for ADHD this Friday through the school but the doctor jus gave me an IQ test? At the end he said that he didn’t see any type of inattentiveness because I scored higher than average. The doctor didn’t ask my any questions on my symptoms or my day to day life. In a way, I felt he implied you NEED to be stupid to have ADHD and he also implied the reason I have trouble concentrating is because I’m too lazy. But how can you say that when you just gave me an IQ test with basic knowledge?

i have constantly observed myself for the past 5 years. attention spans, laziness,, my coping mechanisms, how i react to each social party get myself into, why do i act so childish and even sometimes act like a child, everything. at first, i thought it was just because im really shy and it's part of the adolescent stage. but growing up, having to involuntary ask yourself countless times "what is wrong with me?" is awful because you can't seem to find an answer that you strongly resonate with.
sometimes, not being able to put a label on myself made me realize that i have no control over my life.

Now I’m not sure about much others but when I’m in school I’m as focused as possible and that puts a mental strain on me because my focus is nothing past bad. So now I’m going to beg my mom to get me tested by an actual adhd psychologist and not a school on for everything.

just called my local clinic/hospital. been suffering from depression (the symptoms, not diagnosesd) for many years. In recent times it became unbareable and at the brink of giving up. When i told them that i have a suspicion that this might be related to adhd (sucidal thoughts/tons of anxiety because of inabiity to handle complex tasks etc.) they just said: So what do you want, either you have depression or adhd. for depression next appointment is in 8 months, for adhd in over a year; currently no new patients. If you try to kill yourself pls go to the ER instead....For such a long time you try to dicipline yourself and finally seek out help and all you get is an appointment so far in the future it might as well not exisit. I dont ask for a place of therapy, just a consultation weather or not i am a case for therapy and which would be suitable for my kind of symptoms. I really dont like the idea of self diagnosis and such but the availablity of help baffles me. Everyone always keeps saying "seek professional help" but nottelling you that this is mostly unavailable when you need it.

I'm starting to suspect that I might have adhd orr I'm just evolving backwards. Adhd is a new topic to me. I'm familiar with it but I never really looked to deep into it. Until I discovered a channel that I just pretty much use to help me "get through the wall of awful". Growing up I wasn't the hyperactive kid that's usually portrayed for kids with adhd. I just tend to jump from things to another, whether it be tasks or interests. I was also very very forgetful of where I place my things. A trait my parents hated a lot. I would do anything just to spark something in my brain so I can feel something. And then there'd be days where I completely feel awful. Just utterly awful. Sometimes it's sudden nd would go away fast. But there are times where it will linger for weeks. Idk. Hopefully I could find a job soon so I could afford therapy and I can find out what's going on with my brain.

5 minutes here in Israel in the health insurance paid psychiatrists .
An international expert charges 350 dollars an hour in private so if you are unable to hold a job how can you get a good professional to diagnose ?
In Switzerland a psychiatrist just writes a prescription .
There is a HUGE problem with diagnosis and treatment .
we need more nonmedicinal treatment but that is expensive

You don't need a retest, it never goes away. It is a physiological and biological condition which you are born with. You learn different coping mechanisms through different support systems throughout life. And as life changes, so do you. Education on ADHD is key. Sometimes we have to learn new ways of living with old things because our bodies change as we age. Your prescriptions for glasses change from time to time, so do our tools and processes for living with ADHD. You'll be fine, keep at it; you'll see.

You could say that you experience some of the symptoms and that you would like to talk to a doctor about this.
Don’t mention adhd or anything, just name some of your issues and say you‘d like to check that everything is okay.
And then be honest with the doctor and ask to get the tests done.

When I was 7, I was diagnosed with GAD, at 12, depression. I've always had something that I've seen people call a "happy stim." I try to tell my mother about everything and how it's been going on my whole life, but she says, "oh, I get like that too," but I've never once seen her do anything I've described to her. Should I just straight up tell her I would go get checked out, or do you think it's too late in my life (I'm a teen) to just have all this stuff add up? Maybe it's just my anxiety and depression? I know anxiety and depression are common for people with adhd, but a lot of people just have the two and not adhd

Mom says at my age kids are mature while I'm messy as hell. both appearance and room, feel lazy to organize sh*t. failing at AP, Filipino, Science and Math. at school I just listen to the teacher drone on and on about a lecture we've discussed (or a new lecture) but never really found myself interested in it so I just draw something or pretend that I was listening. if you've met me at my school, don't expect me to do any sort of contribution to a group work. I just sit back, relax and let my group do all the work because I don't have any ideas on how to help (I do feel a bit guilty yet frustrated at myself for being useless). while doing homework, I often think about other stuff then forget the homework or I don't feel like doing the homework so I tell myself I can do it later but when the day that I have to pass the homework arrives, it's blank (sometimes I even lie and say I forgot it at home when it's clearly in my bag) or filled with random ass answers. I had a tutor at 4th grade who was my Filipino Teacher so I stay at school when classes are done. although I always stay behind my other classmate (who has the same tutoring schedule as me) because of how slow I am at trying to think of an answer. When I study alone, I can't get anything done. even if I do remember (which is 0.00% of the time), I will forget about it in my sleep. even if I remove distraction, my mind wonders of to somewhere else. I'm still a freshman at 15 and I can't help but feel like I'm embarrassing my entire family for how dumb I am.
I do chores yes but mostly because my mom is at work often and very tired when coming back, she'd probably scold me for not doing the dishes like I usually do if I had a day off from cleaning the dishes. I just become interested in things I find myself interested and focus on it, like music. I know more music then the things I've learned in school, fandoms like Rick and Morty, Gravity Falls, Undertale, BNHA etc. I think people would've blamed my utter stupidity to my phone if they knew who I was

Honestly so confused, maybe I do, maybe I don’t? I certainly have most of the symptoms but I’m not sure. I don’t remember a lot from when I was younger so it’s hard to know when it started. I know I was the only kid allowed jewellery because It stopped me fiddling, and that I still rock, despite being 17. Have to rock myself tk sleep to calm the thoughts. Have to rock when stressed or overwhelmed to calm myself. If I get too overwhelmed rocking is all I can do. Or I’ll imagine entirely new worlds in my head and I could stay there for hours. So many other symptoms but a diagnosis is expensive, other than the NHS referral but I’m waiting till I’m 18 for that.

We're sorry to hear that you're struggling, Venusplays 09. You might want to show your parents this article "8 common myths about ADHD" (u.org/3478zjv). It says specifically that "The National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Psychiatric Association all recognize ADHD as a medical condition. In fact, it’s one of the most common conditions in childhood. Millions of kids and adults in the U.S. have it."
You might want to bring this up to your doctor or a trusted teacher to see if they can help advocate for you. Even if it turns out you do not have ADHD, you might be able to get some help with the issues you do have.
We hope you can find the support you need now, rather than being forced to wait.
