The ADHD Test!

  • Here is The ADHD Test! A lot of the time I get similar questions from you guys wondering what ADHD symptoms are and wondering if you have ADHD. While i'm no doctor, I decided I would put together a quiz that will help you in defining whether or not you should go to see a doctor about ADHD!
This test is not a definitive diagnosis and shouldn't be taken as one but these are genuine symptoms of ADHD and will help you in figuring out if you should go to have a real diagnosis from a doctor.

Tbh I’ve always known I’ve had ADHD, I can’t keep still, have a hard time focusing, get distracted easily, when I am uninterested I zone out and when I’m into something I shut out the rest of the world, like I’ll be reading in class and I’ll look up and realize everybody is packing up.

i used to be in the exact same boat as you.
have a teacher contact your parents on your behalf, or just outright ask them. idk what your family situation is like.
also the actual test is pretty much just a questionnaire similar to this. which of these symptoms do u have? how long have u noticed them? do u have family history with adhd? stuff like that. if u have 10/10 of these, i would bet money that u have adhd.

I’m almost certain I have ADHD, but my parents are brushing it aside because they think it’s my anxiety/PTSD… I relate to just about every symptom there is. We were at the doctor’s office the other day talking about the likelihood of it, but my parents AND the doctor all made me burst into tears because they told me it’s just my anxiety. I’m so sick of not being heard. However, my therapist told my parents that she recommends me seeing a psychiatrist, and thank goodness she said that, or else I might never get diagnosed. They’re all on board with me seeing a psychiatrist, but just to look into medications for my anxiety, not ADHD… please pray for me 🙏😞

    • @roxanne9456
      @roxanne9456 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

If you relate to every symptoms, trust your guts and talk to a psychiatrist about what's on your heart, not about what other people expects you to. Unfortunately, many doctors are not trained to diagnose ADHD yet, so it's important that you seek the help of a professional who is aware of the symptoms and could establish a proper diagnosis for you. It will get better soon! 💪

    • @Somethinginspace
      @Somethinginspace 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Simply tell your therapist. If they don't listen. Ask for another one. It is often personality dependant. Like customer service in general. Just keep trying until you get the right person. Unless, you go through a boatload of people. Then the problem may be something different.

    • @selinatakerei2392

Keep in mind that PTSD and ADHD have a massive symptom overlap. Check out a few videos and websites on comparisons between ADHD and PTSD. You may have one or both. If you haven’t already had the psychiatrist appt, good luck.

Tbh there's evidence to suggest childhood trauma causes a lot of cognitive, mood and personality disorders. Autism spectrum stuff figures somehow, too. So it's really hard to separate anything trauma related from any diagnosis, especially as it's so common. It does take a specialist.
It's also why professionals are moving away from DSM style criteria and working on managing symptoms first. That does require some element of patience on your part.

Yes to everything (to an oddly high degree) except these two:
    1. Being late. I tell people in my family that being on time = being late. My way of avoiding this is to give myself a 30% time buffer for everything I need to do that's important. Walking to the dentist is the most recent example: takes 20-25 minutes of walking (depending on speed) but I will leave at *latest* 30 minutes prior. How do I do that? By doing everything to prepare for leaving 5-10 minutes prior bare minimum.
So I'm getting my shoes on 40 minutes prior. Where do those 10 minutes go between then and when I leave? Beats me.
    2. Interrupting people because I need to get my thought out. I think talking on the forums my whole life has allowed me to be OK with not getting my thoughts across. I've posted tens of thousands of times, and not getting a single thought out isn't a big deal. Now....when I'm passionate about something, that's a different story.
Even then however, I try to show signs of wanting to speak. If the other person wants to have a good conversation, they will usually pick up on it and let me talk; the struggle there is listening to them while I wait. If they simply don't catch on or don't care, I get the immediate realization that it's not important to share the thought with *them* in-particular. I usually end up losing interest in any conversation after that and stop engaging with them pretty quickly.
Now, that can lead to me being selfish, and I try to keep that in mind; perhaps they genuinely just didn't pick up on queues I thought were obvious (putting my hand up slightly and starting to talk but stopping within 1 word usually.)
Anyways...when there was a string of "yes, that's me" it was kinda 'funny,' because I started getting a bit emotional...followed by you talking about the emotional part. I don't get emotional often, but weird things can hit me hard.
I don't really care to get diagnosed professionally, but I'm glad to know how I can start understanding myself better.
    Thanks.

I'm kind of... shocked, to be honest. I've always been frustrated with myself because I couldn't figure out a way to stop these 'habits'. I haven't thought much about adhd, but it effects my daily life so much that I think I'll see a doctor about it. If it's adhd at least my questions get answered (I literally related to all of these situations HARD)

What really helped me in deciding whether I should get tested (which I eventually did) was reading experiences from other people with ADHD. The list of symptoms to me always sounded recognisable, but as you said, it's a list of things that many people experience anyway, ADHD or not. Just reading r/ADHD and going "wow this is literally me" on every post, as well as hearing the experiences of content creators I watch that have ADHD, eventually led me to believe that I really might have it, and I can conclude that relating to experiences of others can help greatly in making that decision.

Yes to all but one. 62 years old, failed in school, couldn’t keep a job, mother called me lazy and awkward, friends say they couldn’t keep up with me sometimes because I change subject quickly when talking etc. Two months ago a good friend sent me a link about ADHD, well, what a relief, I can resonate with so much. The only way I could describe my life is everything I ever tried was like facing a brick wall that I just couldn’t climb. How sad, I’d of been a great musician, actress, clown, etc. I have now found my thing or should I say things, I create everyday, art, paintings, different materials, even started making hats and scarfs, anything creative comes easy to me and I love it, I have finally accepted myself. Thank you for this video.

I change subjects, and will go back to old subjects we were finished talking about minutes ago or even hours. I can even have two conversations going on at once. Someone will say something, I say something completely unrelated, they say something about what they were talking about, and then I say something about what I was going on about, and this continues. My mom and I have no issue with this. My husband on the other hand thinks I'm ignoring what he just said.

Been on a waiting list to get diagnosed for around 4 years, and in this video, every question was a yes. My mom also thinks she has it as well and some people don’t understand what it is like for us, so I got told growing up: “Attention Seeking”, “YOUR OVERREACTING, STOP IT”, “DON’T SNAP AT ME”, the list could go on forever. Luckily, awareness of ADHD is spreading but still, not everybody gets it especially Boomers, Gen Z, and sometimes Millennials. But they also can have it, but they didn’t know back then, and they might still not know now. My mom got harshly punished as a child because of ADHD, so please, just spread the awareness of it. Thank you.

I'm Gen X - the one everybody forgets. When I was a kid it was called "hyperactive" and it was usually the squirrelly boy in class that was labeled "hyper". Every report card I had said I was smart but spent all day in class daydreaming, staring out the window and talking with classmates. I was always called lazy and in trouble for not studying, not cleaning my super disorganized room and being super emotional about everything. I am 57 now and always wonder how different my life might have been had I been diagnosed and treated at a young age.

For the really fast thoughts one, I have coping mechanisms for that which is why I didn’t think I had adhd. Just one example of this is the fact that I have to read for hours every night until I’m literally forced to fall asleep. I can’t just sleep on command. It’s never the books that keep me awake. The books just help organise my thoughts so I might get a chance at sleep. I remember once when I was in fifth grade my teacher said we could sleep if we wanted to after a test. I tried so hard but my brain just wouldn’t stop speeding. Other people in class did it with such ease and I just couldn’t grasp how they did it. This is only one of the many coping mechanisms I have.

10/10. I add those points too: My voice changes; for instance, when "I'm relaxed" I never relaxed, but when I start work, when i wake up, or something, my voice is normal calm and soft. But when I'm feeling motivated, my way of speaking speeds up and my tone changes, sometimes reaching a high-pitched, fast pace like a squeaky mouse. I can't seem to control it, and I can't take possession of it. Furthermore, I act like a child when I work - and I do this professionally. I exhibit childlike behaviors, such as being constantly cheerful, highly motivated, always smiling, helping everyone, joking, and engaging in playful movements, some of which may seem silly but bring smiles. I'm genuine, I don't put on airs, I have no pretensions, and everything seems to go well for me. I don't experience jealousy at work, and sometimes, I struggle to discern whether someone is making fun of me or not. I speak rapidly to the point that people can't keep up, and they often ask me to repeat what I just said. I'm not a native English speaker, and I often receive compliments for speaking like a native. However, if people aren't English speakers, they find it hard to follow the thread of the conversation and ask me to repeat it, most of the times slow me down -.-. Slow speakers seem boring to me, and I struggle to follow them because I'm always thinking, thinking, thinking when they are speaking. For me, work is like a game. I enjoy it, love interacting with people, helping them, and exploring with them if they have any issues or can't find something. I hyper focus on things, and I keep searching for a solution until I find a solid point. I always ask for forgiveness for everything: if I do something, if I move and touch someone, if I walk in front of people talking, if I accidentally brush against someone, or if they are in the wrong. Apologizing is a constant part of my daily life, and I don't know how to stop it. I've tried, but it keeps coming back.

I was diagnosed with ADHD at like 8 years old. On Adderall and Ritalin one time or another in elementary school. I think I stopped taking them before middle school. Anyhow, I'm 37 years old now and I can assure you that you can overcome many of these deficits. I never suffered from lack of attention to detail, but definitely all the others.
I did estimating for a year or two in my early 20s and I've been in aerospace manufacturing for over 10 years. Definitely helped me with time management and organization. Maturing will help with impulsivity and "shutting off your brain".
My strategy with getting to sleep is actually to focus on one particular thing. I will literally build a story in my mind of a project (building a wooden table) or an activity (taking my family out on an adventure) I want to do. Usually less than 5 minutes later, and I'm asleep. Otherwise my mind will be racing about what I need to do because I forgot to check my project list and I still need to set up an appointment with this or that person, etc.
(and for the record, attention to detail is often where I get stuck)
    Good luck!

i can definietly relate to all the questions and im undergoing an ADHD investigation currently because all these symptoms are a daily strugle to me and has always been ever since i was a kid but the symptoms looked different back then. I have always questioned myself and compared myself to everyone around me especially my peers and friends. And they have always told me im weird, talks too much, always does impulsive things, has bad memory for example: remembering planned activities, birthdays, events, personal belongings in their place / house, always creates a mess, energy level is either over the roof or shutdown mode. Cant reply properly to messages or phone calls, always fidgeting with stuff. I often forgets what to say in the middle of the conversations. ans a shit ton more strugles.

This might help someone out there... BEFORE there was the diagnosis of ADHD in the 70s and 80s the diagnostic symptoms could have described me and maybe about half my friends at different times before the age of 12. It wasn't until I was in my early twenties that I noticed some of these things were getting in my way. However, I thought it was just a case of me adapting to the working environment and part of my growing up. Situations where I had to deliver and actually wanted to deliver where I absolutely forced myself to walk the line and get shit done were a godsend for me because maybe it made me use the neural pathways that I wasn't using. I kept doing that - working the process steps and stages, working to deadlines, working to a quality standard, taking ownership of my deliverables, my role and my value. It was tough. Real tough. But the hardest part was taking the first step. Once I'd done this for about a year or so it became second nature and could do it standing on my head. NOW - was this the cure? Not 100% no. Because I mastered that and then needed another challenge. The symptoms of ADHD came back at that time where I wasn't challenged. So I would pick something more or less unrelated and throw myself in the deep end again and again and again. That ended up being my thing. You could throw anything at me and I'd somehow get the job done. I'm in my 50s now and the symptoms have abated and are no longer an issue at all. The point is - you can get all the meds and all the support you want but you HAVE to push yourself through those gates that for whatever reason - including ADHD - you avoid. In my opinion that's the #1 therapy. Push yourself. To the limit. You'll find the limits are just shit you made up in your head and a whole new world will open up. I was put on medication and it did help but there was no comparison to the raw value of just going for it and getting it done.

My little sister showed all the signs of ADHD from when she was really little, so they diagnosed her with ADHD. But I didn't show the symptoms when I was younger but now that I'm a bit older, I have every symptom in the book, and nothing has been done about it. I never talked about it with my parents, afraid they would be annoyed or just ignore it, but I truly believe I could have ADHD as-well.

I started off the video dozing off and staring at the thumbnails on the side of the player and i had to replay the last 30 seconds of what you said. I started laughing at myself and then thought "I might be overdoing this based on the context of stumbling upon this ADHD-related vid."
And honestly, I don't really care if I'm far into the spectrum, in the work life I focus on my stuff and interact with people normally. I don't really got the time or energy to think about this entire ordeal. I don't feel too impaired or blocked by things when I take things seriously. I've often been told that I'm too serious and that I don't really show too many emotions, although the latter behavior has started to decline. Thinking of things being serious tasks helps me make plans more easily, and I'm sure that atleast some, including an IRL friend with diagnosed ADHD, can relate.
I might check myself in the future, but I'll continue being me. I don't think that there is a need to change, maybe to ease up, but not completely change. I really don't care what people around me think of me either lol. Either cope or cease, I won't take a single metaphorical step out the metaphorical door unless you respectfully ask me to do so.
As I was writing this I middle-mouse--clicked another video and completely forgot what I wanted to write lol.

I am 53yo and I strongly believe I have undiagnosed adhd-i. It is very hard to get evaluated in my country as the professionals certified to diagnose adhd are very few and from what I've read if you go to a non-certified professional you will either be ignored or treated extremely condescendingly like they believe you are "just being lazy" (tm). It's even possible that some of them refuse to even acknowledge adhd as a thing.

I think I'm tricking myself into being bisexual and I'm actually a lesbian. Thing is: I AM attracted to men, and the label of bisexual fits me really well. So I'm bisexual.

The urgency with ideas is ... hmm idk if I had considered it as a possible symptom lol, but it is totally true. When I get a new project put on my plate, ideas come at me like a flood. It's like a flood of sand sometimes, pouring out and I have to race to get it all noted down lest it fall between my fingers and I have so much anxiety about losing ideas. But... then yes I really struggle with any sort of follow through.

Omg all of them! Except maybe the attention to detail one, but it’s not always .. if I care about the thing, perfectionist traits lead to attention to details I wish I could ignore.

I do not have problem starting one, I started multiple ones that I loved doing so, but I never finish one. (projects), My attention depends on the case, if it's like something important, I pay alot of attention, but I can be easly distracted by unexpected things or things I'm interested on. If I judge that it's not important, I struggle to focus alot. Most of the times, when I REALLY want to do something, I focus alot on it, at the point I forget everything else on my field of view and struggle to hear something precisely. I can do something in time if I really need, if it's something that I really don't need to do on time, I usually just do it with a short time difference. I am not very organized, I just set things on a simple way that will benefit me, like my times to eat, a notepad of every type of something or related, etc. My organization depends on how much I need or want it. Yes, I do have emotional problems, I easly get mad, which I believe it's anger issues, but when I'm on public, I just act like I'm fine, but on school if I'm really mad about something I start crying, because most of the times when I get mad I also get sad, Example: someone yells at me for no reason, I get mad at the person for doing that, and I get sad for getting yelled at, I don't like showing my anger, so I hide the anger and I can't hold the sadness. So I usually start crying. I'm also easly offended and can hate people easly. I'm very worried about what people think about me. When there's something I want to do, I usually want to do immediately, and when I can't do it immediately, I get inquiet and a bit angered. Time looks like it's slower. I can hold myself to wait while someone is talking, mostly because I care alot what people think of me, and I also don't like being disrespectful since I also hate that. I can forget things in seconds, minutes, hours, anytime. It doesn't even depends that much on my focus, if I'm focused on something, I can remember it for minutes only, hours or forget most of it the next day. If I'm not paying alot of attention to something I usually forget it on minutes, or even after 10 seconds, on things I'm really focused, I can remember for months, forget the next day, or remember for 1 week. When it's something like people names, ages or birthdays, songs, notes or anything like that, I need to forget and be told again the specific thing multiple times to keep it in my memory. Usually after that I can only forget it after months. On being able to shutdown my brain, it depends, if I remember I need to do it and I want to do it, it will take alot of time until I forget that thinking, just like you're breathing automatically and when you think about it you need to breathe manually until you forget, homewever, if I shutdown it naturaly, it's way faster and takes some minutes only.

Well i answered yes to all of these and I can literally know I have adhd and ocd without getting diagnosed because of a pattern sequence which tells me. I was a topper in 8th grade, but my 9th grade year was also fine but it was at a horrible school. My tenth grade year was at a new school, but since I didn’t go there, I fell into the easiest of academic traps my eight grade self wouldn’t have fallen into. People even forgot me. I am struggling with adhd more than ever and I dont really want to use meds to cure it. I feel like writing a book about the struggles of adhd and why its extremely important to focus on adhd people as much as it is for autistic or disabled kids.

idk whether i got adhd or autism, but a point i can really relate to is thoughts coming into my head mid-conversation that i tend to voice, even if it interrupts someone speaking. my usual phrase after that is: "sorry, you were saying" and i tend to go back to the focus of the conversation (whatever topic/subject of the person that was speaking was)
