Arthur and Helen go for a horse ride with Lord Lowborough and Annabella. Arthur Huntingdon tells Annabella all about Lord Lowborough's gambling addiction and how he lost all his money through many games. He hung around with a crowd of drinkers and gamblers. Some of their names are Grimbsby and Hattersley, as well as Huntingdon himself. These friends make it hard for Lowborough who claims that drinking is from the devil, and he must not take any alcohol. He becomes a miserable person. Lowborough tries to convince him to just drink in moderation, but Lowborough is unable to do it. Throughout the narrative, Helen has misgivings about how Arthur "helped" his friend, and her view of his goodness is cast in doubt a little. She is perplexed and troubled.
At the end of the chapter, she walks in on Annabella admiring herself in the mirror in Helen's room. Annabella tells Helen she is engaged to Lowborough. Rachel, the servant is in the room for this discussion. When Annabella leaves, Rachel says to Helen that the servants all talk about Lowborough and that it's not good. She admits they all talk poorly of Arthur too. Helen says she won't hear it!
Huntingdon then leaves the estate and Helen won't see him until her marriage - ten weeks hence. She is afraid of missing him too much. She writes him many letters and he writes her a few. His letters are jovial and unserious. This worries her. She wants to know the real Arthur and wishes he would be serious at least sometimes.
