Chapter 42 Ralph and Milicent Hattersley visit Helen while Arthur Huntingdon is away. Ralph and Helen have a candid conversation in which Helen admonishes Ralph for how he is sometimes proper and responsible, which produces hope in his wife, Milicent, but he often afterward reverts to the irresponsible behavior wrought by hanging around Huntingdon and Grimsby and the others who are profligate in their lifestyles and actions. Helen explains that this makes Milicent feel very anxious and insecure in her marriage. Hattersley doesn't believe it at first, but after Helen lets him read two letters she has received from his wife, in which she pours forth her sadness and anxiety due to the actions of her husband, Ralph Hattersley makes a decided declaration to reform.
He runs to his wife and tells her of this and gives her a big kiss. She is elated and states the credit goes to her friend Helen.
Chapter 43 Huntingdon comes back in October and announces to Helen he has hired a governess for little Arthur. He states meanly that Helen is not fit to be around children because she is so strict and dour. He says the new woman is very pious and had been recommended by an old dowager who is very strict and religious. Helen is upset by this. Training little Arthur is the chief function of her life and this too is being taken away from her.
When Miss Meyers, the new governess comes, Helen notices she doesn't seem overly intelligent or good with children. She tells Helen her father was a clergyman and that she was an orphan and that the previous house she had been in was one of excellent repute and the family approved of her. Helen, suspicious, did a little digging and found all the information Miss Meyers had given her was probably not true. Rachel watched Miss Meyers closely and discovered that it was true she was having an affair with Huntingdon!
Helen makes the decision to escape to Wildfell Hall as soon as she can. She will travel under the assumed name of Helen Graham (her mother's maiden name), and Rachel insists on going with her. The butler helps them pack and load boxes. It isn't easy because they have to do all their preparing unobserved or their plan would be foiled.
Helen goes downstairs for her last supper with Huntingdon - as she will be leaving during the night for secrecy. She is too excited to eat. Arthur asks her what is wrong with her. She says she isn't feeling well and would like to lie down. He says sure and that somebody else can take her seat, uncaringly. When she leaves the room she thinks to herself, " There! I've seen the last of you, I hope."
She goes into her room to rest or maybe sleep for a couple of hours before it will be time to leave.
