Several days later Helen overhears Hattersley and Grimsby say their friend Huntingdon has told them they can't come to Grassdale anymore. Helen thinks it's because Huntingdon is mending his ways and wants to be a proper gentleman farmer and family man. Overjoyed with her husband, she runs outside to find him in the shrubbery and kisses him. He acts pleased and loving at first, his next action is to testily order her to quickly go back inside. Helen is too happy to be worried about his second reaction and merrily skips back into the house. That evening she shines at the dinner table, talking way more than usual. Interestingly, her mood is contagious. Everybody is happy. Helen can be a very engaging hostess! Two days later Rachel, her maid, cries and makes derogatory comments about Lady Lowborough. She says that lady should be evicted from the house immediately!
Annabella walks out with her husband, Lord Lowborough soon after dinner. Helen accepts to play a game of chess with Hargrave, where narrowly loses to him. After, Hargrave asks where Annabella is. Helen and Milicent don't know. Hargrave pushes his point and asks where Huntingdon is. Hattersley says Huntingdon and Grimsby are out together, which he seems to find amusing. Hargrave tells Helen Grimsby is setting up to distract Lord Lowborough away from Annabella so that she can run to Arthur for a secret lovers meeting in the shrubs. Helen can't stand to hear this and not know, so she runs out and concealing herself, witnesses this to be true! Heartbroken, she hears her husband and Annabella tell each other they love each other and laugh about Helen running out to kiss him the other night. Arthur says he does not love Helen. Then Annabella runs away so as not to get caught.
Helen confronts Arthur later that night and tells him she wants to leave with her little boy. Arthur refuses to allow that. She tells him in that case she will stay, but they are no longer husband and wife in any sense of the word. She will no longer accept any display of affection from him, nor offer him any such. She does maintain that if he were to repent and change his ways, although it would be hard for her, she would forgive him and take him back.
