    I daily drive a petrol 80 series now after having a few turbo diesel vehicles, it's fantastic, servicing is easier and cheaper and if things go bad engine wise it's no big deal, an engine rebuild on my previous common rail turbo diesel which was getting high in km's would cost more than I paid for my fzj80, it's robust, cool, simple and has a huge amount of support for parts and so on, I like your rig and your logic and approach, 2 inches and 33's is perfect for touring, I have the same set-up.

    • @4xTouring
      @4xTouring  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A friend of mine had the same issue with his turbo diesel 80. Engine rebuild cost him close to A$14,000. Way more than what he paid for the vehicle. A petrol motor is around half that. It makes a lot more sense on the financial numbers to go petrol. Many argue that petrol has a lot less torque than a diesel. But for touring i am yet to come into a situation where I run out of torque on my petrol.

    Duncan, I grew up in Texas and never knew any Malayalees who were into anything outdoorsy. I got into hiking and backpacking, and about a year ago I bought a Jeep. I almost never see any non-white people out here on the trails in Austin. I have to be self sufficient because I just can’t make friends with groups where I see people with Confederate flags. Seeing you on YT is fantastic! I wish you the best.

    • @4xTouring
      @4xTouring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Finny. Thanks for supporting the channel. Appreciate it.
      It is quite different here in Aus. Many from all communities are into the outdoors. Perhaps because, Aus is 7.6m sq kms with only 25million population we have so much to explore. Though have to admit, not many from the South Asian communities are into this lifestyle. It is changing though. A good sign. Generally everyone is very welcoming and socially integrate. So finding like minded people to travel with is not so difficult.

      That's weird. My wife and I are always offroading in Texas and rarely see confederate flags and we see many Hispanics offroading as well. I'd say it's a cultural thing as to why there rarely any Indians, Asians, or black people out there. I've also met some of the nicest people out there. Maybe stop assuming all the whites hate you and go be friendly with them. (And those who do have confederate flags are literal idiots. There's nothing more ironic than a right wing hick sporting a Democrat flag)

    Hey Duncan,I did watch this when first released (on TV) but commenting now. Your 80 is extremely practical and functional which is the perfect build. I love how you have put in so much thought process into any add on’s which you did yourself. I have definitely taken a few ideas of your build to incorporate into my build. What love to know what you do to ensure things keep ticking over for a vehicle that does not get driven daily to ensure everything is in running order come the next trip I.e check batteries, fridge etc maybe for a future Video lol

      Good question. Yes certainly another video soon. Thanks for prompting that :)
      I have tried to keep the 80 as practical and functional as possible with the least amount of financial outlay as possible. If that makes sense. My thinking is, I LOVE my 80, but at the end of the day it is a means to enjoying the ultimate desire which is travelling and seeing the country.

      @@4xTouring Absolutely. In 1974, (an extremely wet year), we travelled through the Flinders Ranges and up to Arkaroola in 2 1969 XW Ford Falcon sedans. In those days the sealed roads finished at either Quorn or Hawker ??, there were no bridges over the multitude of creek crossings, and diversion after diversion had been graded around the many bog patches along the road. That was real off roading, . . . in a stock standard 2WD car, . . and one towing a trailer !!. Now people get kitted up to go there with all the bells and whistles, . . . on sealed roads !!!!!. Nice 80 mate👌🏻 Subbed.
    Also have an 80 now (on my channel) for touring in the 1HDFT.
    Personally have not found the diesel engine to be more expensive in the long term ownership as I've been working on this one since 2006 but it is very well looked after. That being said I could imagine a high mileage diesel with a premium price tag would not make sense for a budget overlander. 1FZ's are great engines.
    Just a note on the RTC Steering Damper, rather have your caster correction done or fixed with caster plates as the factory spec will make the steering self centre even with a lift. I've been through the caster correction bush exercise and it cracked the radius arm diff brackets due to binding up...still trying to fix leaks on the housing.

    • @4xTouring
      @4xTouring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate! Thank you for the support. Love your channel too. Subbed. I grew up in Botswana/Zambia. Started my overlanding back there. Your channel brings back familiar sights, sounds and many wonderful memories.
      In my 80 caster correction was done at the time of the 2" lift. When it was time to replace the steering damper (strangely enough) the RTC damper was a bit cheaper than a plain old damper.
      As for the cost, not sure how it is in RSA, here when it comes to 4x4s the demand is predominantly for diesel. So the used price difference between petrol and diesel is massive. Then if an engine rebuild is required the cost difference can be just as big. So for me (since my 80 is not a daily runner) the cost difference made sense.

    Hi. Very nice land cruiser you’ve got. Wouldn’t mind one myself to be honest. I noticed the cell phone antenna on your bulbar, if you put it on the roof it might help with signal range as VHF/UHF antennas work better when they’re mounted higher up.

    • @4xTouring
      @4xTouring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lewis. It certainly is better to mount the antennas on the roof. In my case I might be changing the roof rack or getting rid of it all together. So until I make the decision I will keep the antennas where they are currently.

    Very good presentation! I have few questions: (1) why manual locking hubs when the truck (I presume) is an AWD with center diff lock? (2) The two spot lights in front of a radiator will block the airflow into the radiator. Mr. Andrew White showed the consequence with proof of having massive lights in front of the grill in one of his videos. Post some overloading videos... Thanks!

    • @4xTouring
      @4xTouring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jan. (1) The locking hubs came with the 80 when I bought it. The idea is, when driving on tarred roads there is no need for 4x4/AWD. So by having the front hubs unlocked there is a reduction in wear and tear on the front diff and steering components. Here in Australia we tend to drive many distances on tarred roads before we get off road.
      (2) Yes large spot lights can block air flow. From my experience that is if the entire (or at least most of it) grill is blocked. In my case (though the camera angle does not show) it is not that much blocked. So, far with all the travelling I have done, this does not seem to pose a problem.
      (3) An overlandind video came out yesterday (Pink Lake). Hope you enjoy it.

    Hey Duncan, Great 80. I am in a similar stage with my 80. (my third) Just wondering if you have weighed it loaded? How do you find the handling? Have you done any handling mods? Mine is a boat and I am right about at the Toyota GVM with low fuel level. I have a 180 and 90lt tanks so filling it up is interesting.

    • @4xTouring
      @4xTouring  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate. Third 80! They just grow on you don't they?
      Fully loaded mine comes in 30kg under GVM. Being just two of us (no kids) we don't take a whole lot when we travel. I have the same tanks as you do. However, when I fill the 180l tank it actually takes 218l. When I fill it, I try not to look at the pump amount :D
      I have a Dobinson suspension and have found the handling to be pretty decent. Body roll is not significant. Though I can feel the weight (especially with both tanks filled). I opted to put very little weight on the roof as this makes it top heavy. Anything that would have gone on the roof I put where the back seat was. This keeps the centre of gravity low.

    Hey mate, great to see another 80 owner out exploring, I'm taking my petrol 80 out west in September! Can't wait! I wanted to ask how heavy is your 80 with all that gear? I'm worried that I'm going to be over GVM. Thanks all the best!

    • @4xTouring
      @4xTouring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey mate. A good ole 80 will take you anywhere :)
      Going over GVM was a worry for me too. So I did a bit of weight shedding. Got rid of the rock crawlers (not required for my type of travelling). These saved close to 100kg. Removing the rear seat took off another 15kg or so. I also decided against a roof top tent (as much as I wanted one). I also manage the weight by not filling up the long range tank until absolutely necessary. Doing without the second spare wheel kind of compensated for the weight of the long range tank filled up. So the last time I checked (fully loaded) I came in a few kgs under GVM.

      In my opinion it is more useful in a diesel motor. From new would be ideal. For a petrol motor as the Kms build up it is a good idea to have a catch can. Terrain Tamers sells a complete kit with installation brackets for most popular 4x4s.

      Hi mate. My main tank (which came from the factory) is 90l. The long range tank carries 230l. That's how the 320l is made up. I am not sure of the brand name. Not Long Ranger. I had it supplied and installed by Opposite Lock.

      Thanks for that. The purchase price difference between a petrol and diesel was almost 50%. Since my 80 is not a daily runner I figured the initial purchase cost makes up for the running cost of a petrol. Also diesel's need more regular servicing than a petrol.

      80s were never economical. Fully loaded I get 6km/l on the black-top. Around 5km/l high range off road. Low range can vary.
      I found the muddies quite grippy in very sandy and also on surfaces with loose gravel. Lowered pressure of course.

    OK Your reasoning for petrol or diesel is not quite correctly researched diesel lasts 4 times longer than a petrol engine if you avoid turbo also less electricals than a petrol ,dizzy ,spark plugs, ignition etc some of the perks owning a diesel love your truck me personally petrol/ diesel landcruiser loopy

    • @4xTouring
      @4xTouring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Tom. Yes absolutely diesels are built stronger because of the nature of the beast. But in my case the 80 is only for touring. Rest of the time it stays parked. So the price difference (between petrol and diesel) was the deciding point. I figured the purchase price saving would by me around 50,000 touring kms. If this was going to also be a daily runner then the diesel makes more sense.
      I have a few friends with petrol 80s pushing over 500,000kms on the original motor. Pretty good run for a petrol.
