  • When a car passes half a million kms on the clock, just shy of its 30th birthday, and is still going strong, you know you're on to something! Even more so when many of those kms have been on dirt roads in the African bush. To celebrate this historic moment, and in response to requests from a few fans, here's a behind-the-scenes look at a working 80-Series Toyota Landcruiser, while on a video shoot in Gonarezhou National Park in south-eastern Zimbabwe. No frills, no fancy stuff. This car is the real deal. Come and have a look.......!

    Best comment... if I had all the money in the world I would still drive one of these. Very true .

    Here in America we have the Tacoma and 4Runner. They both have near flawless reputation and reliability history but not nearly as legendary as your Land Cruiser. Very nice.

    Aaand you just raised the price of every 80 Land Cruiser.
    This is such a wonderful endorsement for a vehicle. The ultimate stress test!

    Love this!
    Have you ever thought of the Toyota 79 series, you can get a dual cab? The TH-cam channel Ronny Dahl does serious offroading modification with them.

    • @AfricanPlantHunter
      @AfricanPlantHunter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I've often thought about it. For the longest time Toyota didn't itself make a double cab version, and so all the ones you saw were after market modifications, which tended to start coming apart over time. So I steered clear of them. But since 2012 Toyota has made its own. Definitely the vehicle to go for if you want something a little newer than 1997 (which is when they stopped building the 80 series). When my current one finally gives up the ghost and my lottery ticket comes in a winner, that's the one I'll go for!

    See they could build things right back then! Hello Gus. this reminded me of an old 1997 Subaru legacy (grand wagon) when I was living in New Zealand. the nice thing was it was originally from Japan and from a really good year. "Rosey" as I lovingly called her helped me go on and off-road all around that fine country. i would love to have tested the old girl on the trip you took though I guess she couldn't take it without a bit of modification (ok maybe a lotta bit ;) ). Thanks for a cool deep dive again!

      Aah New Zealand, now that's a country that's getting close to the top of my To Do list. Very keen to go and check it out. And Subarus are amazing vehicles too. As you say, probably not quite up to some of the roads I take my Land Cruiser on, but hey!

    Hi Gus how often have you ever needed 2 spares when running BFG's I touch wood have never had a puncture with my BFG's but I dont do a fraction of your km.

    • @AfricanPlantHunter
      @AfricanPlantHunter  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's a good question. But actually I've had a few punctures with BFGs. They're a lot longer lasting than any other tyre I've ever used, but they're not totally immune to punctures. And if you're in the type of landscape where you get one puncture, Murphy's Law dictates that you're probably going to get a second one pretty soon too!

    I have just discovered your channel and as an 80 series owner myself I can confidently say that you could not have chosen a better vehicle to do what you do. Unfortunately any vehicle like this is expensive to "pimp" as you call it (ask me I know 🙂). I hope that you are able to make the necessary mods very soon so that you can reach even further and more remote areas. I am off to watch more of your videos now! Good luck, I hope to cross paths with you on the trails some day.
    PS. I just saw that this video is 2 years old and that you have changed to another vehicle that shall not be named haha. How is it working out for you?

    • @AfricanPlantHunter
      @AfricanPlantHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha! I loved my 80 series with a passion, and was absolutely when she became too expensive to keep running. The other one came to me by providence. And I'm loving her too, although in a very different way. I really don't think they can be compared. We drove as a family of 5 for 7 months the length and breadth of Africa in our 80 series, and I wouldn't even imagine doing that in a Landie (mostly because there would have ben a rebellion from the back seat passengers!).

    What type of shocks do you have on your Landcruiser?

      Thank you Bruce! I think I'm alright but I'd advise taking some vehicle recovery gear. It's been raining a lot in Gonarezhou, which is fantastic for the Park and its biodiversity, but will definitely make some of the roads a little trickier than usual. You'll have fun!

      @@AfricanPlantHunter thanks Gus. Love the rain in the bush so can’t wait. We well sorted with recovery options thankfully 😅
