Tbh, I kind of like this better than another mod I've seen where they just stick the dock in an entire Gamecube. This one is considerably less wasteful, and even the one part you DID have to take from a Gamecube(the front controller plate)seems like it could be recreated with 3D printing.

If I had to guess, the reason that they're using two ports normally is because the Wii U USB ports were individually quite weak, so they went with two so it would work on both consoles. If we're being technical, the second plug isn't rumble, but a second 5V source to give enough power for rumble.
If you open your Wii U up and bridge the 5V pads of two ports and the ground pads of the two ports, you can unplug the grey cord and still get rumble.
It's weird since not all of these things are built like that, I have an official one that has 8 wires (I think) and a third party one with 6 wires (4 normal, and instead of just one power, mine has power and ground (even though ground is already shared).
I'm working on integrating it inside the Wii U.

Nintendo should make a limited edition game cube style nintendo switch with this concept and game cube joycons.

On one hand, this is super cool. On the other, I couldn't justify destroying a GameCube to get that face-plate. Might try to make one when I get access to a high-quality 3D printer...

I didn't destroy a gamecube, I had some parts laying around. You can buy the faceplate and memory card ports for about $20 online :)

This is so simple and awesome!
I'm probably going to do just that once I have access to a 3D printer again.

There was a kickstarter for something like this but a diy option sounds way better actually.

If the joycons were detached it would look like a GameCube like but still it’s really cool I wish I had the time to do it
