      Its AWD, almost the same setup as a Subaru. I know you mentioned one of the other NV transfer cases has a Torsen center differential, is that your ultimate goal?

    that viscous coupler will lock solid once it does. we had a 8 foot snipe and multiple guys hanging off it in automotive school even though they claim it divides the power 70/30.if you notice it will lock up on you in parking lots from turning and the difference in wheel speed front to back.anyway I daily drove an ss silverado for 9 years in the canadian snow and slop. best AWD system ever

      Not a truck guy but I don't think a viscous coupler should ever actually lock up. They can transmit one hell of a lot of torque if you try to turn their two against each other fast, though. But my understanding of the things is "at some slow enough speed they will permit two shafts to be rotated independently." If it doesn't I'm guessing there must be some unwanted metal-to-metal contact of the parts inside.

    An AWD transfer case with a slightly under driven low range would be cool. You could run a taller gear in the axles for MPG while driving around town. Then shift it into low range for the track.

  • @davidfarmer

    not sure what the original comment was but in general awd means that the front and rear drive shaft can move independently of one another, this can be done with a diff and with or without a viscous coupler. 4wd meaning they are locked together, either permanently or with a locking center diff. a couple interesting tcases: 2001-2002 toyota 4runners came with a multimode tcase that can do rwd, awd, and 4wd. In the 80's toyota made a 4wd version of the tercel. The engine is mounted longitudinally, the transmission mounts like a rwd transmission but has a shaft that goes forward to an integral center mounted front diff that sits under the engine. There is a locking collar on the rear end of that shaft that locks into the rear output for the rear solid axle. It operates as a part time 4wd system with a fwd primary mode, it also has 6 speeds, with an extra low gear being a 4.7. diffs are geared 4.10.

    I had a 2004 Tahoe with that transfer case. Actually was a beast in the snow and it was great for my wife because you know it didn't blow sideways as easily as a truck in two-wheel drive. Still did all-wheel drive donuts though. It's only the 5'3 and it had that that auto ride BS but the thing had 230,000 mi on it and it was a high output. Aluminum 5.3 not the LM for the other one... It only had like 2,000 hours on it. It was all highway I averaged sold it. It was like 65 mph average. It looks like a brand new 2000 Ford Tahoe. I ended up selling it to my cousin cuz he was in a pinch and he still drives it. It has 287,000 now I believe same original everything except for rear end. It did end up blowing a rear end. I think he was beating on it.... Dorothy never let me down

    I never had a 4 wd or AWD,,, my had bunch of SWB full size Chevys though … when my oldes went off road (unintended ),,, I made rule about keeping 4-500 lbs of elevator counter weight up against the cab in the bed… AND got into flipping new take off wheels and tires so that I would always have a newish set of tires on those trucks. Thankfully no more ‘off roading’. ( and they shure rode nice).
    So we always had rear drive Chevys ( wife and 40 years) .. we talked a lot about what fun retirement car we would like ( in our first few years of marriage I bought n repaired a wrecked 69 impala SS 427 convertible, and family car was a 70 Monte Carlo ( this transplanted rust belt boy loves Georgia rust free cars!!)
    Our fav truck was a 03 that we put over 250 k miles on ( after buying used with 130)…
    So after I retired I bought a low mile ( just under 29,000 miles) … o3 silverado shorty 5.3 .. as third vehicle…
    I don’t use it much.. ( I find it difficult to put the miles on) ( a ‘problem’ that I didn’t give much thought to before buyin lol)

    As someone else said that's how Subaru does it. The viscous coupler is essentially like a small torque converter, and they are, as well, usually not rebuildable. You can get full lockup in a torque converter, a percentage of lockup, in the transfer case or at the input to the transmission. GM was savvy enough to use a viscous coupler to create their desired ratio of front-to-rear bias. This can be changed just like a lockup torque converter in a drag car. This setup is found is Mercedes , BMW, Acura, GM, Ford, every manufacturer -not only in the transfer case but the transmission. The only difference is using fluid dynamics to couple rather than mechanical/ positive lock through a gear or a chain. Physics 101. Yes, it's AWD.

    • @bradley3549
      @bradley3549 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bias does not come from the viscous coupler, it comes from the planetary differential (see patent# US4677873A if you are curious!). Subaru 5MT uses an 1:1 spider differential, which is why it's 50:50. (Some!)6MT use a planetary differential more similar to the NP/NV transfer cases with a few different ratios used depending on the year/application which is why you see everything from 49:51 to 35:65 bias listed for those.
      This is all independent of viscous vs DCCD.
      In both cases, the front and rear ends are still mechanically linked. All the viscous coupling does is provide a somewhat speed sensitive restriction on how much differential action happens. One inaccurate way it's described is that it has a theoretical range of 40:60 (fully open) to 50:50 (fully locked) . But since technically a fully open center diff can be 50:50 and a fully locked center diff is ALSO 50:50, torque bias obviously doesn't tell the whole story!

    • @HardNorthOutdoors

      @@gootch27 it won't lock solid as it's a fluid coupler, if it did lock solid, one would not have to replace the burned out coupler as was done here. @@patrickshaw8595 They aren't necessarily always straight cut either, helical planetary differentials also exist. Usually not because of noise but because the thrust characteristics of the gears allow for limited slip. Which is how some 'gear type' LSDs work.
      What I like so much about the planetary differential is that it's REALLY hard to unpack what's going on with them. Probably one of the best brain teasers in the automotive world. Tricky especially since there are different types that work in different modes. You can drive the sun and get differential action from both ring gears. Or you can drive the ring gear and get action from two sun gears. Or you can drive the ring gear and get action from BOTH the sun and the plantetary gears. Can make your head explode.
      And to make matters worse, most TH-cam videos either grossly simplify it because it's hard to understand OR are flat out incorrect. :(

      @@patrickshaw8595 OOH! And something else that's really neat - a lot of planetary center differentials tend to be something other than 50:50 torque split. But it's NOT necessarily because it's better! It's often because you can make the differential 1/3rd more compact and likely inherently stronger by having a non-equal ratio! It's all about packaging.

      @@bradley3549 Lifelong fascination 3-shaft transmissions here. Coupling two of them together - well let me go through my personal library and when I find it I will recommend a book to you wherein the author created a special symbolic language just for the purpose of describing coupled planetaries !
      Point is I am an expert. No stranger to compact harmonic drives and zillion-to-one ratio compound planetaries in winches, hoists and power-rearview-mirror adjusters.
      Any automotive differential is a "negative-one-to-positive-one" reversing gearbox and it's normal power flow is to tumble the transmission CASE ( a planetary gearbox ) and the torque component of power is split exactly in half going to each shaft while the rpm is usually intended to be constrained by driven rubber tires and their path -straight or curved- along a roadway.
      The point of ^that^ was that you already knew that AND also how a Torsen diff uses worm gears and worm wheels to affect the normally even split.
      So i hear you describe your truck's power divider in the abstract as:
      "a gearbox of negative-1.6-to-positive-1.4 ratio so constructed as to be driven by it's case - making it a planetary - and also not utilizing bevel gears, chains or cardan shafts for it's purpose ~ but rather stepped helical planetary gears (sounds kind of PowerGlide-ish!) pinioned to orbit their unequally-sized sun gears (shades of Model T Ford steering reduction gears !)
      Hope you got a laugh out of this and don't feel slighted. Once back in the 50s I worked on a team at Fairchild to design a compound planetary prop-speed gear-reduction unit for their little-bitty gas turbine. It was a failure. Too inefficient. Too much "recirculating power" and it was replaced by conventional staged spur gears.
      Seriously I'll locate that old book, dite it to you - then you can read it and be as confused as I am by the whole subject, lol !

      If i remember right theyre proper awd with a center locking diff for 50/50 split and i think regular axle differentials as well depending on options.
      Mightve moved if you hit the center diff lock but probably wouldve strained the center diff real bad anyways

    so...im curious. Youre obviously very into the idea of all wheel drive. But why? does it have benefits over the 4 wheel drive setup? or the auto function on the gmt800? other then never needing to manually change it of course. But is it any better? or just convenience?

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      for most drivers, 4wd would be the way to go, but I love the idea of it being there all the time, and for drag racing and autocross specifically. (the AWD system helped this truck win the speed/stop challenge at LS Fest West). The auto 4x4 setups need to first senst slip and then engage, where the AWD system is already there and requires no electronic input to activate.

    I'm not really into all the nuances of gm power trains but an all wheel drive transfer case does not make an all wheel drive vehicle. My definition is if all four wheels pull at all times. Back in the 70s and early to mid 80s gm sold a lot of four wheel drives with open diffs. front and rear meaning even in four wheel drive, high or low at best you had two wheels pulling. And back then I did not see them as four wheel drives.
