    It's nice to see you working the way most people have to, no lift and laying on the floor. Goes the show you don't need fancy equipment to do high quality custom work.

      Honestly as a diesel mechanic working on semi trucks I don't know many shops that actually have truck lyfts. Everything I do is on the floor clutches differential reseal engine over hauls brakes suspension. I'm talking semi trucks like Peterbuilt kenworth freightliner. Honestly working on the ground is actually easier then a stupid lyft. it's also faster then a lyft anyone that thinks mechanics working in a shop is easy is clearly inexperienced. I mean most mechanics do side jobs on the weekends and when me as a diesel mechanic I do road calls out of a tiny truck meaning I fix the trucks that break down on the side of the road. Most mechanics while doing side jobs generally don't have air compressor or a lyft we do it the same way as any other person just trying to get their car running the difference is we have much more knowledge on how to work without fancy shit I mean primitive tools. There was a time when lyfts didn't exist ND u just worked on the cars cus it's fun

  • @davemcdaniel4856
    @davemcdaniel4856 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    It's the bcm. You should be able to unplug everything 4wd, yank every 4wd fuse, including the front diff fuse, and disconnect the battery for 10 min. When it powers back on and sees nothing from 4wd it then ignores it from then on. Same deal with the 2500 burbs auto ride. It's fully electric, not air, and has to have a ton unplugged, removed, etc. If you don't do the bat reset it goes into theft mode.

    • @gregthemechanicman
      @gregthemechanicman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      all joking aside you know this for a fact? does it also disable all the 4wd codes that will be thrown or does it actually disable the entire system alltogether and the ecm and bcm just play along and not store codes for missing modules, actuator codes etc etc? and what years is this verified on? seriously interested.
      is this like the 10,10,10 trick to "reprogram" gm ecus from the junkyards into another car without having to get the key programmed,vin number and all that jazz?
      i also heard you can do the 10,10,10 trick and as soon as you start the car/truck for the very first time and you yank the bcm plugs really quickly and it basically just turns off security alltogether .. havent verified that last one yet but i did hear something like that.

    • @davemcdaniel4856
      @davemcdaniel4856 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@gregthemechanicman I know it for a fact. I've done it for the 2500 suburbans on 5 2000 to 2002s. First one I did went into theft mode. You can also reprogram the bcm with the rpo codes using a tech 2 and you don't need to worry about the trick. However the trick only works for deleting things, if you add something to the system it has to be programmed in or all hell breaks loose. I was explained by a gm tech it was designed as a failsafe mode that when all signals are lost from an onboard system, if in an emergency, you can do this to get it home.

    • @dickbrugh5562
      @dickbrugh5562 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@davemcdaniel4856 Yup! I’m a GM tech too. When things are taken out that the bum is programmed for, it doesn’t like it. Some of the older bcms, you can use the tech 2 to unselect options thus fixing any issues from removing or unplugging components.

      Manual can work with heavier loads than automatics. With a manual trans the system can operate without issue just running 110amp alternator. Automatic systems need 130amp+ alternators. Engine will also run cooler as it is not having to cool the trans as well. Compared to automatic no power is lost between engine and the tires. You don't have to worry about automatic doing the shift panic when you are between gear hauling going uphill.
      If you plan on staying with the 4L80E then do every cooling upgrade you can. Two to four quart extra capacity aluminum deep dish pan for transmission. These upgrades work for me; Tru-cool model# 47391 , Cool Case model # GMT569A , TSI model# 4L80DPK-A .

      @@frostybandit1 I'm pretty sure there is power lost between the engine and the rear tires regardless of what style of transmission your you use, this is simply due to basic laws of thermodynamics. There is always heat generated from the transmission and therefore that means there is energy transfer, which means there is energy lost from the load of the trans. But I can definitely see a manual transmission being more efficient, as it's not relying on fluids, only direct gearing.

    with that GM communications network if I remember right, there is a start and an end. I think some networks loop, but anyways with that if you delete a module from the network depending on where it is in the network you might end up deleting another modules communication to the network or even several modules by accident then also some modules need to be reflashed to no longer communicate with the module you have deleted. all modules still connected to the network will set codes saying they have lost communication with the modules disconnected and the modules disconnected will not communicate because they no longer have a path to the data link connector. it sounds like you have a broken link in your communication chain and that may be fine for what your doing or you might run into communication issues. pull up a diagram of the communication network and see if anything has to pass through the 4x4 module.

      4wd tcases are always 50/50, even if a 4wd has an open diff, it can still bind. That's why awd systems that can do 50/50 only do it when needed, like STi's, Evo's, Lambos. The front wheels on an awd are more or less overdriven, so to speak. That's how the Christini dirtbike works, and why it's awd, and not 2wd, like a Rokon.

    Do you know if the AWD donor happened to have the same wire harness as the 4WD? I want to go the opposite route and swap a 2 speed transfer case, switch, etc into a 2007 AWD Denali. I’m hoping GM used the same harness and just left the wires taped up behind the dash. Maybe swap the tccm and some reprogramming.

    I think the procedure to relearn key is key on for 10 mins then cycle switch to off repeat 3 times. The truck prob saw 3 successful key cycles then reset its self. Ignition switches are kinda finiky. Awesome swap! My wife loves her 03 Denali 6.0 awd

    Are there a lot of folks swapping to AWD? My mom has an ‘04 AWD Burb. 3rd/4th went out of the 4L60E. Engine runs great. 155k and I know the full history on it. Planning to rob it for my ‘88 K5. Trying to figure out what I want to waste time parting out.
    I’m assuming swapping to AWD is a way too complex of a process to even think about for a straight axle rig.
    Would I be in good shape to have the 4l60 built while it’s our or plan to try to secure an 80e? Wanting reliable. Decent cruiser, that can navigate a hunting logging road once in a while. Not a crawler or speed demon by no means. It’ll remain by babied K5.
    Exploring a Cummins 6BT swap in my ‘85 CUCV (M1009) Blazer and ditching the 6.2 Detroit. It has a turbo 400 but I’m wanting to go overdrive auto. So I’m leaning toward a 4L80e for it too, to use with a controller.
    Any feedback would be appreciated! Enjoy your channel 👊🏼
    Recap:
    •Is there a market for me to sell my AWD hardware off?
    •Build up the 60e to go back behind the 5.3 going into K5 (currently TBI), or find a 4L80e?
    • secure a second 4L80e for the Cummins swap from 6.2Diesel.

    So I had seen one of your previous videos where you stated what vehicles had the right t case. I found, and aquired the t case from an 05 escalade. Planing to put it in my 2000 silverado behind a 4l80e (I know that requires some modification) . But the t case I got is actually a bw4481. Will this still work like the nv149? Or am I better off calling it a loss and paying alot more for an nv149?

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  ปีที่แล้ว

      the 4481 isn't as good as the NV149, it will work exactly like an open diff in a rear axle. there is a chance it will send all the power to the front or back at some points.

    @lewisbarnes5857 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    More than likely your theft deterrent problem is due to you moving the column to remove the 4wd switch. There are 3 small wires that plug into the sensor at the lock cylinder case and they will cause issues. You MAY be able to find the issue at the terminals where they go into the connectors, check both ends. Honestly I never actually FOUND the issue, I would just always replace the ignition switch which comes with that harness.

    I have an 88 Chevy Stepside I want to air ride lay frame and go all wheel drive. I bought a 94 Z71 I'm stripping for the frame. The main issue is making the driveline work. I am also swapping the rear suspension to an independent suspension. The reason for the IRS is suspension travel without having to add the large hump in my bed. This will make the bed appear stock while still allowing the truck the lay low and even lay out at the show.
    I also have a 98 Dually that wont stay running. All it will do is start then die in a second. The engine and transmission was swapped from another truck.

  • @anomamos9095

    FYI
    If the transfer case has any kind of clutch pack in it it probably uses ATF for oil.
    If it’s purely gears and or chains it will likely use gear oil same as a differential.
    Putting atf in both types probably won’t do any harm as long as you change it quickly enough but putting gear oil in an ATF type might kill the clutch packs.
    Also some additives will kill the clutches.

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Luckily on the NV149, there are no clutches, the awd is controlled by a sealed viscous coupler. It uses a silicone based fluid to operate but is not serviceable and does not interact with the lube inside the transfer case.
