Hello Matt , well I did it, and you are right this lens is amazing, having lot of fun and for an amateur it works well for me as I do a lot of motorcycle trips and this allows me to have two lens into one and saves on space and weight. Excellent value for the money.
@ikki9394 I haven't used the VRII you mention, I used the original though. Both good. The Nikon is heavier, maybe faster, but this is lighter and a lot more zoom range.
Just picked the 18 -200 tamron without the vc .. its awesome and good for family events and such where I don't feel like taking my 2.8 glass which is heavy and overkill for those shots most of the time .. can throw it on and not have to worry about changing lenses again . Thanks for the vid matt! Even though not the same lens the cheaper model is great as well!
I do have a D5100 and when I bought only of this camera and I bought only one lens the Tamron 18-250mm. Very good results. I can say is a transition lens to do everything in pictures up to until I found out what type of pictures I will go to put money for the right quality lens for the right job. Nikon Guy he's right "Tamron 270mm" Yessss!
there is also the sigma 18 200. but both lenses have variable apertures which do not allow much light much into the camera. also the small apertures do not give bokeh and strong contrast. the trade off is convenience and less weight, but these are great walk around lenses.
I ordered one from TAMRON Canada, after 3 days they emailed me that this lens is back order for 5-10 weeks. I was desperate to get it for Aerial Photography assignment. I finally found it in stock on AMAZON.CA, for the same price of CAD$399 and got it in 3 days with $6 shipping. (THANKS AMAZON). 6 years TAMRON warranty. I put it on my Canon 650D (T4i), Took some sample shots, checked the zoom, focus sharpness, AF speed, VC, and manual focus. I would say its an amazing lens at this price. I haven`t actually calculated the zoom ratio, but being a videographer, I can imagine how powerful zoom it has. Once I finished my assignment, I will make a sample video to upload. This is definitely not a Pro Quality lens, but a decent lens for semi-pros, Experienced amateurs or wedding and travel photographers. Initial test shots are great, little CA on far edges, only visible in 100% crop. VC (vibration Compensation) is better than some original Canon lenses. Manual focusing is very smooth, no sticky turning like kit lenses. Now Auto Focusing: I took some shots through LCD screen and was little disappointed on how lens was struggling to find the contrast for focusing. Then I took some pictures thru the viewfinder and WOW..that was super fast, PZD motor. I don't know the logic behind this but its true. I went outside to try it again and found it so fast while taking the photos of flying birds at full zoom. My final thought on Pros & Cons will be after doing Aerial Photography from helicopter, which will prove the VC and AF quality. So Stay tuned and Subscribe to my channel. Thanks.
I have one. But without the PZD. Its a lot heavier than the new one. The zoom is little bit tricky. But that's what I got with a little bit cheaper. Happy with it.
It would be so ODD to have Christmas in the middle of the summer (although I guess it would be odd to you to have it in the middle of winter). I can't imagine putting up a Christmas tree and it being 40C outside and never even having the possibility of a white Christmas (ie. snowy Christmas). There's something very magical about waking up on Christmas morning to a fresh layer of white snow and the absolute silence that comes with it.
Bough this lens before a 2-week trip to Italy last year and LOVE it. It occasionally "hangs up" a little for me on zooming. Have you had this experience?
Hay Matt this is GAC Sr again; what Tamron lens would you recommend out of their macro lens; 60mm f/2.0; 90mm f/2.8 or the 180mm f/2.8? Would like to know soon for I'm going home soon back to the Philippines and back to my Wonderful Wife of ten years. I'm in the USA now taking care of Mom and I believe it's cheaper here than back home. Thanks for all your doing Matt .
Thanx Matt, I have just bought this lens as an alrounder, because I didnt want to carry around my twin lens kit all the time... do you recommend putting a UV filter on it?? I am a bit of a newby... just experimenting with my SLR at this stage.. have a Nikon D90 regards Terri
hi, nikon guy, first of all, i am learning much from your videos and thank you very much for that. one question: i bought nikon d5100 and considering buying 70-300 vc or 18-270 vc from tamron. which would be better for wildlife?
@thatnikonguy Hey Matt, have you considered using Sigma/Tokina lenses, would love to see you do more dogfights/comparisons perhaps maybe with this lens and Sigma 18-250mm & Nikkor 18-200...
Hey Matt, thanks for this review! I have a crop-format Nikon and kit lenses, and eventually want to upgrade to something like the D700 for more serious photography. However, before I can afford that, I want to add a couple of good lenses so I can shoot portraits, low-light, and macro. I know you said this lens is good quality, so would you feel comfortable with the quality of shots produced enough to use it for clients?
will a case that can carry around my canon with the 18-55 kit lense attached, will be able carry the same camera with this tamron attached, when it's in it's shortest length? cause i just wanna attach this lense into the camera and carry it attached all the time in my camera case. so should i get a new case or is it gonna fit?
Thanks Matt , great video , I am a beginner and need to ditch my Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 iii that has NO image stabiliser and currently looking at the Tamron 18-270mm VC PZD as an all porpouse lens specially that I am travelling in few weeks time... do you recommend the 18-270 over the Tamron 70-200 mm VC ? will I get the same image quality with the 18-270 as the 70-200 ?? thanks heaps
hey matt i am 13 years old and i have a Q to ask you. I have been working hard in school o my parent agreed to buy me a lens i have nikon d5100 and i have been looking between to lenses the sigma 18mm-250mm or the tarmon 18-270 what do you think i should get and why?/
did you get your d5100 :D (also if you are doing video the Canon T4i gets better colors and because the lens is a EF mount so it will work with every canon camera but with nikon it will only work with the crop sensor cameras..
Nice review. Reading David's comment below would you recommend this as your perfect travel lens? Within budget it looks like we have the Tamron 18-250 @around £300, the Tamron 18-270 @ £290 Sigma 18-250 @ +£300. Nikon come in over budget @ £590-£700?!! I have the Nikon kit lenses 18-55VR,55-200VR. Would I be better swapping these 2 lenses out for one of the lenses listed above? (on a D5100)
I have seen your videos on the Tamron 16-300mm. My photo buddy uses it on his Canon. I have used the older version on of the 18-270 Tamron. What is your opinion? I was using it on a Nikon D40 I now have a Nikon D 5100.
Hello SirI have bought the very well reviewed lens-Tamron 18-200mm Di II VCbut I am having an autofocus problem sometimes or the other.can u please tell me whether it is normal? I min if I take super close up images of objects the problem recurs. So is it a general problem or is my lens defective?
Just for reminder. EVERY ZOOM lens has weakness. Bending lines - when you take a pic on the brick wall at 18mm you will see it straight away or chromatic colour, soft picture at 200mm or more. It's NOT defect :)
It was a good lens. I sold my kit lenses that came with my D50 back in the day to get one all around lens for road trips. Did a good job until it got stolen :(
hi Matt. Can you please help me decide which of these lenses I should go for? Because i was leaning towards this one (18-270) but after your video review of the 70-300 I'm not sure anymore. It seems as though that lens got better image quality?
How well the Sony Version of this lens go with my A57? The main purpose of me looking for this lens is to have an overall travel lens as I just have the 18-55 kit lens and 50mm f1.8 Prime lens with me right now. Can I consider buying this lens over the Sony 18-135 mm lens which comes as the Kit Lens with A77 or the Sony 18-250 mm lens? Which one of these three (Sony 18-250/Sony 18-135/Tamron 18-270) would serve my purpose and can give me a fairly sharper JPEG images? Please guide me.
Not sure if you bought anything yet. If you shoot video, the 18-135mm has much better AF and a super quiet motor, but obviously not as much reach. It's probably the best hobby zoom lens Sony makes based on photo samples I've seen. It's a good 15-25% sharper than the 18-200 or 18-250 sony models at the corners if you pixel peep. If you already bought something let me know how you like it.
Hi Matt. I have this lens for 2 years now and I'm quite happy, except the poor image quality and extreme softness above 200 mm, and also the focus isn't great. But great value for the money and it's an all around lens for DX. The vibration compensation (VC) is great. I'm using it on my Nikon D60.
nikon d5100+tamron 18-270mm + uv filter + shoulder bag + hdmi cable and the rest of standard stuff got it for 599 euro best buy ever wonder how it will work with tamron 150-600mm telezoomlens
very nice video - like you said - for the price point - that is key - agree it is a good lens - for a lower cost lens with such versatility in zoom and quite good quality it is a no brainer. What else is there as good ? nothing in that price range as good -
@Righoldhack, I agree with that and in fact, with my D5100 with 18-270mm, I will buy a small discreet, lightweight, wide angle lens camera Lumix DMC LF1 (In the market at the end of June, 2013) It is look like it will be the top quality in that small format. It is worth a DD!
i have to agree with you, i was testing it also against the sigma 18-250mm and the canon 55-250mm and i also have to say for me the canon takes the first place and after it the sigma lens! to me the tamron was pretty unsharp at max zoom, the sigma was ok, but the canon was brilliant! and if we talk "bang for buck"... THE CANON JUST DROPPED TO 140€ !! the sigma is about 330€ and the tamron 350€. i have to say the sigma had a bit better build quality to me, but all 3 are "plastic fantastic" :-)
@LydiaKrow It's definitely not a lens one buys for achieving perfect image quality, the strengths of this lens are its huge zoom range (if one would use 18-55 and 55-200 lenses one would have to change the lens often), light weight and moderate price, thus a nice lens for sightseeing during vacations. It's image quality is definitely worse than that of 90% of the other lenses out there, but again one doesn't buy it for achieving professional results, thus it's ok for vacations.
try them both on your camera,, remember to take picture of the box, så you can remember, which pictures are taken with the sigma and the tamron, and then pick up an old analog prime lense and a adapter, for macro or a wideangle lense and a reverse adapter for macro shooting, ´cause you dont really need autofokus to shoot small objekts, allmost all picture will be in manuel shooting anyway... my personal opinion on sigma and tamron, sigma makes very good primes and very bad zooms
I wouldn't call it shit but it is not par with the Canon 55-250mm in terms of image sharpness but the AF speed is fast. I found this lens to be an F/8 at its sharpest but I don't go beyond 200mm (beyond 200mm sharpness is just horrible). I've taken more-than decent photos with this lens with a speedlite at corporate events. Work around the limitations of the lens and you will be fine.
I have had the Tamron 18-250mm for a while. I decided to "upgrade" to the 18-270. I figured it's newer and it's more expensive... it must be better. Wrong! After a 100 or so shots I've gone back to using the 18-250 which poops all over he 18-270. IQ is substantially better, even after a trip to Maxwell International (the Australian distributor) who said it was up to spec. If it comes to a trade-off between IQ and VC (image stabilisation) IQ wins except in the most extreme circumstances.
Sorry Matt... enjoy your videos and respect your opinions but I can't agree with you about this lens. I bought one to replace my Tamron 18-250 (Non IS/VC version). The 18-250 is so much better that I've probably shot less than 100 images with the 18-270 (I've shot about 4,000 images with the 18-250). The 18-250 is so much sharper with better contrast. The worst thing, though, is the bokeh... especially on specular highlights. They look like little donuts - a bit like a mirror lens - and they are rough! Nothing creamy about this bokeh! I've sent the lens back to Tamron for checking and they say it's within spec so I don't have a dud copy. Flash forward - It is now 2014 (your video was posted in 2011) and Tamron have just brought out the 16-300. I'm going to have a look at it but I'm going to be very careful, shooting lots of test shots before splashing out the cash. I know it's a superzoom, with all its compromises but this one (the 18-270) is too much of a compromise!
Hey, i read your comment and went out to check. Well, the 16-300 is double the expensive compared to the 18-270. That must explain the sharpness you talked about. But thanks for the comment, tell me, is it really much better? Is it worth the price to take the 16-300?
The 16-300 is double the current price of the 18-270 but that's only because the price of the 18-270 has dropped substantially. It was more than the 16-300 when it was first introduced so you can't really use price to gauge quality.
....my sigma zoom started sliding out of fokus, when i shot downwards, it could not hold its own weight, but slowly slided out....bbbaaadd sigma,,,,,,,,,
Had the 16-300 Tamron it was ok but in a country like the UK ( low light) and you really need a tripod. The time it takes to swap over a lens if you prepare a camera bag in advance is not that long. I switched to carrying prime lens the results speak for themself photo image wise. But that said . my advice to my self would be split the focal distance difference into two or three groups of zoom lens ranging from 18 -200 to cover that range.(Not got all your eggs in one basket then.) on a sunny day the Tamron was ok, in lower light if the lens is very slow or don't work at all it is no use. Thanks for your review. I did find it helpful. But really a good camera bag and a system for quick change is cheaper than that Tamron. And will give you better quality photos if you do your homework before you buy.Keep those reviews coming cheers mat
Traded my 18-55, and 55-200 Nikon kit lens for this...with cash on top. Worst move ever !!! Trading back and staying Nikon all the way...playing safe with a few primes. Took 600 pics down the beach 95% really bad. 18mm-80mm ok....80mm-270mm don't expect sharpness or any definite colour. Recommended by the shop....and to be honest, I'm too embarrassed to upload the results on my photography page.
How have you found it? I am thinking of getting one instead of the nikkor 18-55 and 55-200 like you. Some say the image quality is comparable to the canon kit lenses, which are not as good as the nikkor ones.
Well, its nice. But the quality is not the best. But u don't have to change lens that often like if I had the 18-55 55-200. I found it a little bit heavy if u take many photos without tripod. I will have this lens for my travels mostly.
Veery slow zoom, autofocus is a snail, in low light sux. Please stop say - you love it.YOU DON'T. Yes- is cheap, but also cheap comes with not so great quality.
sometimes its good to watch old vids like this, to realize how much improvement happend over the last 9 years in video and audio quality on youtube :)
@americanbulldogy cool, is the 90mm for full frame or crop?
@GAC1207 very different lenses. 60 is dx too. do you shoot much macro already?
Tamron 270 - go for it.
@benwilliamdownes check your local shops - probably varies between countries.
there is also the sigma 18 200. but both lenses have variable apertures which do not allow much light much into the camera. also the small apertures do not give bokeh and strong contrast. the trade off is convenience and less weight, but these are great walk around lenses.
I ordered one from TAMRON Canada, after 3 days they emailed me that this lens is back order for 5-10 weeks. I was desperate to get it for Aerial Photography assignment.
So Stay tuned and Subscribe to my channel.

hi, nikon guy, first of all, i am learning much from your videos and thank you very much for that.
one question: i bought nikon d5100 and considering buying 70-300 vc or 18-270 vc from tamron. which would be better for wildlife?
@southernblood82 oh yeah, you offering accommodation
can we compare it with canon 18-135 STM? Mainly performance?

Matt were the sample photos shot with the D5100 or D700?
hi mr thatnikonguy, im just new to photography,i just wana ask, if this lens can be use for macro?
Hello Matt, do you think it's worth double the price of the 18-105 VR for a 1st time Nikon user??
@Adoborama yep
I purchased the T3i and looking for an all-purpose travel lens. Would you recommend this for T3i? Thank you.
@LydiaKrow yes sure.
Hey Matt, thanks for this review! I have a crop-format Nikon and kit lenses, and eventually want to upgrade to something like the D700 for more serious photography. And, can you test the Pentax K5??
Does it have image stabilization, optical stabilization or the equivilant, and can I use it with a canon rebel T3?

yes you can, just make sure you buy the ones with the sony alpha mount.

I could be wrong here but you said it will af on the 5100 but it is not af-s which I am pretty sure is what the d5100 needs in order to autofocus
@topcow23 yes

Hello boss ^_^ which is better? Tamron 18-270mm VC PZD or Nikkor 18-200mm VR II? give me tips ...
what is a good medium priced teleconvertor for a Nikon DX 18 - 55 lens, and a DX 55 - 300, how dose the image reproduce, any ideas please ,G

Hi Dude how would this be on a 600D Canon
How much is it & best place to buy one
Cheers
i want to know the image quality no one shows that in comprartion with regular zooms
@PugetExposure aww, that sucks!

One of the best all purpose lenses:). Grab it!
+will that lens work on my canon rebel g film camera/
can i use that in sony a57?? pls help
is that the pzd version?
Nikon 18-300 or this lens?
can i use this lense on canon 1100D?
can you put it on a Sony SLT-A35?

love this lens
I won the PZD version of this lens, it was pretty good. However I sold it as I didn't have much of a use for it.
Just bought a 70D with this lens... Thanks

THE CANON JUST DROPPED TO 140€ !! the sigma is about 330€ and the tamron 350€. i have to say the sigma had a bit better build quality to me, but all 3 are "plastic fantastic" :-)
I have 70-300 VC and I think you don't need wide range for wildlife photography, so maybe the 70-300 VC would be a better choice.
wat is een mil?
@LydiaKrow
It's definitely not a lens one buys for achieving perfect image quality, the strengths of this lens are its huge zoom range (if one would use 18-55 and 55-200 lenses one would have to change the lens often), light weight and moderate price, thus a nice lens for sightseeing during vacations.
It's image quality is definitely worse than that of 90% of the other lenses out there, but again one doesn't buy it for achieving professional results, thus it's ok for vacations.
@benwilliamdownes Also check out ECS at Drummoyne - cameras dot net dot au.
This lens distorts insanely...
try them both on your camera,, remember to take picture of the box, så you can remember, which pictures are taken with the sigma and the tamron, and then pick up an old analog prime lense and a adapter, for macro or a wideangle lense and a reverse adapter for macro shooting, ´cause you dont really need autofokus to shoot small objekts, allmost all picture will be in manuel shooting anyway... my personal opinion on sigma and tamron, sigma makes very good primes and very bad zooms
i have the same lens.. i agree with you .. it's great lens and also for your money..
This is agreat lens.. I have it for 1year plus.. And I'm sure I'ts gonna be with me in a very long time..
Images are not sharp, sometimes its not focused and yes distortion, I've been using this lens for like 1 1/2 years.
What about the tamron 18-200mm?
@sexualburgerking haha - the green fro!
Why there is no Arabic language in the intro ??!!!
Might sell my nikon 18-105 and 55-300mm lenses and get this one.
cool
....my sigma zoom started sliding out of fokus, when i shot downwards, it could not hold its own weight, but slowly slided out....bbbaaadd sigma,,,,,,,,,
Had the 16-300 Tamron it was ok but in a country like the UK ( low light) and you really need a tripod.
I sold my nikkor 18-55 and 55-200 for this tamron.
Hoppfullt its better.

Hernandez Kevin Gonzalez Thomas Martinez Angela
Sony version should be cheapher as it has no VC.
