I think they are a very proper watch brand. I purchased a carrera calibre 16 in 2007. Love the watch. Keeps perfect time. I was in motorcycle accident 5 years ago and the crystal was broken, one pusher was broken, and the case was scrapped down by the road. Still kept perfect time after the accident. I wore the watch as it was for several weeks and it became an instant conversation starter. I sent Tag a note with the pictures with my appreciation of how rugged their watches are. I got a note back asking me to send the watch back to their service department. They moved my movement to a new case and did a full service. 100% free of charge. Also sent me a hat and backpack with the return of the watch.

For a while I considered TAG Heuer one of the most mismanaged watch brands, or even mismanaged luxury brands, in the last several years. But the Glassbox (and this Skipper)? An absolute home run. Well done, TAG. These are the types of watches you need to make to regain your prestige.

I used to be one of those "HEUER" purist dweebs who insisted on seeing "TAG" removed from anything Heuer-ish. But I have turned the corner. I think the TAG part has now lost any negative connotations. I never thought I'd see the day. My attitude is now - I want to see "TAG Heuer" on every watch they come out with from now on. I think the days of seeing only "Heuer" on the dial should be completely left in the past. TAG Heuer are building back up and it's great to see.

I own a Carrera from 2012, and wear it on a perforated leather strap. It’s rock solid, well-proportioned, and nice-looking. No manufacturer has a perfect track record and TH is certainly no exception. That said, the Carrera and Monaco are both iconic designs.

I loved the look of the new glass box Carreras when I first saw them a couple of months ago, and then as soon as I laid eyes on this variant, I knew I was smitten. I popped down to the AD today just on the off chance they might have one to look at… it was love at first sight.
It’s a crazy price, but this is a crazy hobby. I literally couldn’t leave the store without it. No regrets (so far). TAG Heuer have really upped their design and execution game.

  • @RedwoodAggie

The glassbox Carreras finally feel like they're worth the asking price. TAG has been lost for a while, but they're slowly coming back, despite missteps like the Autavia release a few years ago. I don't think they'll have the '90s popularity of what every person wanting a nice watch shot for that didn't have a Rolex budget, but they're on the up and up. I've tried both black and blue glassbox Carreras on. They're really nice and bang on perfect sizing, even for my 7.25" wrist. The Skipper has been my grail (a real, not very obtainable grail) for a while. This one now takes its place. While not perfect, I absolutely love it. Could I do without the way they handled the Skipper branding on this one? Sure, but those subdials are small enough in real life that the wording on there probably won't jump out at the wearer. Other than that, I have no complaints. The Moonwatch's recent price jumps have the sapphire model at US$1300 more than the Skipper. While an argument could be made for saving up for a Moonwatch, the Skipper's unique aesthetic and quality specs mean the owner would not be settling, but making a different, but also good choice.
Other things I like: The Monaco skeletons are quite beautiful and comfortable on wrist. The Dark Lord Monaco is absolutely gorgeous, though limited. The new Carrera 36 3 handers look quite nice and the colors really pop. I like that they've at least gone up to an SW300 movement with a 56 hour power reserve (TAG, please update the Carrera 39s with that). Other new models I think are excellent options: Solargraph (especially in titanium), Aquaracer Pro 1000 (if you've got the wrist for it), full lume dial Aquaracer 300, and the Aquaracer 40mm. Not all the Aquaracers are quite what I'd want, but there are gems in there. I think if they took a few more steps to go back to the first decade or so of Formula 1 models, that would be perfect, especially with early 2000s nostalgia being popular at the moment (just ask my teen).

It's a shame that some people think they should dismiss '80s and '90s TAG Heuer watches. And it is so undeserved. These people don't seem to realize that, in the late '70s it was in fact Jack Heuer himself, who decided (then) Heuer should start making practical and modern divers watches, simply because they, and not the 'old fashioned' mechanical chronographs, where in demand. As a result (TAG) Heuer actually started selling watches again, in the '80s and '90s and a lot of them, too. They were actually extremely popular and this, along with investments made by Techniques d'Avant Garde (TAG) in the mid '80s, is the reason the brand still exists today and we can still purchase fine watches, such as the cool looking and very well made modern day 40mm Aquaracer 200 and the beautiful Carrera Glassbox series.
I still love wearing my '80s and '90s TAG Heuer divers watches, because they are very good quality watches and I in fact love that '80s and '90s vibe and looks. Incidentally, these (semi-)vintage watches are gaining in popularity, as there's an ever growing appreciation of '80s and '90s style stuff. They can still be picked up for reasonable prices, now. So this might just be a good time to get one!
Oh and lastly, the Carrera Glassbox is in fact more affordable than a similar Omega Speedmaster.
However, in my opinion, it has so much more charisma than the oh so boring, safe choice Speedy.

Aquaracer and F1 series does make a breakthrough in design. Compared to Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Oris, Longines, etc, they somehow looks more modern, younger and dynamic. And not forget to mention, the 1-6(000) series and F1 in the 80s did make Heuer rise to popularity and this design DNA is carried over to present Aquaracer & F1 series, so it is a very important history for Tag Heuer.

The only issues I have (ignoring the crap they produced in the 80s and 90s) are: the annoying TAG bit on the logo - just drop it and revert back to Heuer. The second is the stupid lug width! My automatic Aquaracer is 20.5 mm! Who the hell uses this size???? Longines Hydroconquest is 21mm, which is annoying, but 20.5mm! Come on Heuer!!! All watches should be either 20 or 22 mm lug width! Just a bit of homework would have saved you some stumbling around about the colors of the sub-dials. Red in boating demarks the “port” side (or left side if facing forwards) and green the “starboard” side. The pale green would have been a relatively common non-skid finish on boat decks during the 70s.

    It is an interesting question.
I wonder to what extent many of the watch brands that claim great histories are somewhat disingenuous, insofar as many seem to be marketing labels used by luxury goods conglomerates.
For example, Omega has an incredible history, but I find it hard to believe that the MoonSwatch was something they had a genuine choice about. Similarly, JLC...to what extent is it being held back by Richemont, in its own niche so that it's not directly competing with VC and AL&S?

  • @talljohn5350
    @talljohn5350 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes of course they are. They have a lot of lower end watches and made some marketing mistakes that were a turn off to watch enthusiasts but that should not take away from what they do right. My first “luxury” watch I owned was a used grand carrera and I still love it.

Tag Heuer make some lovely watches and yes they make some cheaper ones and some pretty garish ones, but looks can be subjective. All this internet talk of Tag Heuer being rubbish is nothing more than click bait from people who just want something to hate and have never even owned one. Personally I think they should ditch some of the lower Formula 1 models but I’m sure their marketing department has done its homework and feels there is a market for them.

Up till now I've written off TH as an overpriced fashion brand, but now I realise that was extremely unfair. This watch is gorgeous and has a very pleasing set of dimensions for slim-wristed gents like myself. Consider me a convert!

What the fek is a 'proper' watch brand?! Sometimes, this hobby... C'mon, of course it is! Just because some designs have been hideous doesn't make them any less 'proper.' In fact, you could argue TAG's commercial success makes them a lot more 'proper' than some others. People forget that TAG was right alongside Rolex in the '90s - ahead of Omega. But clickbait snarky sniffiness aside, a great watch, as is the standard Glassbox. Great to see TH able to reconcile TAG and Heuer; design quality with commercial positioning.

How appropriate I am considering my 5th watch. I have a Rolex OP39, a Tudor black bay on suede, a speedmaster 3861 sapphire sandwich on the bracelet, and a Longines spirit titanium on the nato. Considering Tag, Breitling and Panerai for my last watch or to call it quits with 4.

Heuer is a true watch brand. When it was bought out their first watches such as the Sel was a good effort even using COSC movements. After that they went down hill. Each new watch was made cheaper and had a cheaper movement. The only thing that went up was the price. How can they ask 2000 GBP with a 5GBP movement? Now they are just raping Heuers past

There is no doubt that they have some of the most horrible timepieces out there, but they do carry the watchmaking DNA and with right watches and right marketing, they are changing their ways. Really love the Skipper and the watches they have been releasing lately.

Tag Heuer should really leave its 3rd party 3-hand movement for their starters line up. Put some in-house manufacture in their aquaracers would be very nice to begin with. Metas COSC would propel the brand also, look at what Longines n Tudor had done lately.
