  • Click here for Part 1: • Ride the Ferrocarril C...
    Ride aboard a GE C39-8 as we climb through the mountains on the Central Railway of Peru. The climb from Matucana to San Mateo is one of the most scenic parts of the line (its all spectacular though!) with 14 tunnels, 1 tall steel viaduct and two switchbacks in the span of just 20 Kilometers. The grades average 4% for much of this segment and the locomotive is working hard, plenty of great FDL sounds! This is truly one of the most spectacular lines in the world and I think you will agree after watching this! Part 3 coming soon!

    Wspaniała trasa kolejowa. Z pięknymi widokami. Jako Polak, jestem w podziwie konstrukcji, inżynierii Ś.P. pana Ernesta Malinowskiego. Te tunele, gdyby były projektowane dzisiaj, musiały by😂 spełniać zupełnie inne wymogi bezpieczeństwa. Typu wentylacje, oświetlenie. Ogromny szacunek dla p. Malinowski Brawo 🖐️🇵🇱🖐️🇵🇱

    Clever use of switches! No mountain stays unconquered that way!
    Lucky trip, offering so much to the passionate traveller, from the railway bed cut into rock to bridges seemingly fragile enough to collapse under the weight of the train to tunnels carved as if by hammer and chisel!

    I love that rasping jagged GE exhaust note. That C39 sounds very similar to the U26C's I've ridden behind in New Zealand South Island (though the grades were nothing like these Andean ones, and ours didn't actually breathe fire like this one)

    Info from Wikipedia 2018-11-04: The GE C39-8 six axle traction motor diesel electric. Maximum Tractive Effort: 108,600 lbf (483,000 N) at 10.8 mph (17.4 km/h), Power: 3,900 horsepower (2,900 kW), Prime Mover: V16 7FDL-16 diesel engine driving a GE GMC187A2 main alternator, Fuel Capacity: 3,900-4,500 US gal (15,000-17,000 l; 3,200-3,700 imp gal), Gear Ratio of 83:20 connected to 40-inch (1,016 mm) wheels which allowed the C39-8 a maximum speed of 70 mph (110 km/h). Total 161 built between 1984-1987 for two North American railroads, Conrail and Norfolk Southern, which have now retired all of them. The GE C39-8 was a fairly unpopular locomotive with crews, cited factors such as a rough ride, tendency to overheat, frequent turbocharger issues, issues with the fuel injection system, and various other reliability issues.
    Note from poster: The calculated speeds through the first 8 tunnels in Part 1 of this video using this locomotive had an averaged speed of about 15 mph. At 15 mph an unsophisticated clunky suspension and over heating are likely non issues with low throttle slow climes, short trains, and once you get some altitude cool air. More than 100,000 lbf of tractive effort likely makes this locomotive a reliable hero pushing cars up steep switch back ramps with grades over 3% in the rain!

    Thanks for posting the video reminded me of working in Taiwan.
    I worked on the Taiwan High Speed Rail Project as Senior Inspector of Works on the C220 16 klm section. 11 tunnels, several bridges of varicose types, viaduct sections and a station and maintenance yard. It took 4 years to build even though we experienced earth quakes and typhoons. A great experience that I'm proud of being part of.

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. Very cool to hear about your experience, its truly amazing what kind of terrain the new HSR lines in Asia and Europe are being built through. When in Korea in 2009 I couldnt believe how they were just drilling dozen mile long tunnels everywhere to replace the old lines that wound through river gorges.

    It's interesting for me to think if the Denver & Rio Grande would have found alternative places to lay track here. They were notorious for their looping lines in mountainous areas and tried to avoid building tunnels to the absolute extreme. Note how the Durango & Silverton line has no tunnel at all.

    • @nikosjk1
      @nikosjk1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Spiral tunnel was actually built sometime in the 1970s, before then the line gained elevation looking through the valley but was continuously destroyed by floods. Interesting thought though as rough as the landscape is there might have been no other choice but to build tunnels.

    The line is very spectacular line but also scaring. Although the train goes slow sometimes it looks too fast for such slopes and curves. It's terrible to imagine what may happen in case of derailing or brake failure.
    Fortunately, the tracks in a good condition, looks like they were renewed shortly before the video was taken.

    • @nikosjk1
      @nikosjk1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Accidents were a major problem when the line was run by the state owned ENAFER company, due to corruption and mismanagement the line never received proper maintenance. However since the line was privatized under Henry Posners FCCA the railway has received tons of work to make accidents very rare. Most accidents that happen nowdays are due to falling rocks, an everpresent danger on this line.

    Why some of the tunnel portal are bricked and lined and some are not? And what is that structure on the opposite side of the gorge and in the background at 45:16 to 46:29 ? It looks like two steep parallel lines dug into the hillside going way up. It comes into view again at 46:44 to 47:00 when it disappears around a turn just before tunnel #26. After the switchback, it is visible again when the train comes out of tunnel #27 at 52:03 to all the way to the end at 52:17

    Superb video, but I wondered as to why they're backing up from the community of Tamboraque? It looks as if there's a tunnel further on down the tracks a way, under a highway. I would have liked to seen what was beyond the tunnel. Overall, though, this is awesome and thanks for posting.

      Some switchbacks have dead end tunnels to allow for extra headroom. Anytime the train reverses in the video its for a switchback.

    Just ask him does he like his nose the way it is, or does he want it remodeled.
    I started in tunnel construction back in the 60s, when safety officers were just coming into the business. The older miners taught new comers like me safety and if you didn't listen you got a clip around the ear. Once in a rock tunnel drilling was in operation so it was hard to hear, I threw a small stone at a miner to get his attention. He just ran for cover, then saw me laughing so another clip around the ear. He explained that a small stone will fall 1st before a rock fall.
    I also worked on the St Clair, CN railway tunnel Sarnia, Ontario to Port Huron Michigan in 1994, safety standards actually changed midway. The walkway boards changed from tow to one on the US side, the contractor ignored that rule.
    There are many blanket rules in safety that are not task specific and need to be challenged.

    When you have towns such as Tamboraque, what caused them to be built so high in the Andes, and to be connected by a railroad?

      In most cases for the mining industry which is the reason for the railroads existence.

    Does the entire train clears the switch at the end of each switchback or does it need to be broken into two parts? What is the average length of a typical train? Thanks for sharing this amazing experience!

    • @nikosjk1
      @nikosjk1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The trains are typically short, less than 20 cars but often still need to be broken in two to fit the switchbacks. Thanks for the comment!

      @@Isochest Isochest No, just one locomotive in most cases, the train lengths arn't long enough to justify helpers. I'm sure they would like to lengthen the switchbacks but it would likely be an expensive proposition.

      @@nikosjk1 I agree it would cost. One of those switchbacks is in a dead end tunnel!! FCCA has a good strategy in using limited resources. I believe they keep their two stroke diesels at lower altitudes where the function best.
