Ride the Ferrocarril Central Andino! Part 3: Inferillo bridge and more!

- Part 3 of my journey aboard a northbound freight on the Ferrocarrill Central Andino. (FCCA), which runs from Lima to Huancayo, Peru. This segment takes us from where we left off just outside of San Mateo to just outside of Casapalanca. In addition to the many tunnels and amazing vistas we will pass through several highlights of the line. First off is the famous Puente Inferillo or Hell bridge, a short steel span passing through a tight canyon with high rock walls on either side. We will traverse the Cacray switchback and cross the Puente Anche, a similar steel structure. Unfortunately technical/human error led to me entirely missing the Chicla switchback so I have added in a few photos for this segment. This is a fantastic series of videos. I have never seen topography like this in my life and how they ever built roads and rails through these mountains I'll never know. People even live along the way and that's hard to imagine. This is an awesome video that anyone would be amazed at. Thanks so much for posting these scenes as I would never have seen them otherwise.

And I think the word is _'Infiernillo'_ or _'Infernillo'_ meaning _'Little Hell'_ from _'Infierno'_ and the suffix _'-illo'_ to denote small things.

Yo se que le llaman " puente del infiernillo" , en alusion como a un pequeño infierno, debio ser un sitio terrible, tal vez por que en su construcción murio bastante gente, gran parte debido a una epidemia de " fiebre de la oroya " o " enfermedad de Carrion" o " verruga peruana".

@북극곰 le llaman Ferrocarrill Central de Perú por que esta localizado en la region de la sierra central de Perú el cual cruza los Andes Centrales de Perú llegando a una altura de 4000 m. En ese lugar hace mucho frio. Hay otro ferrocarril similar en la sierra sur de Perú ĺlamado Ferrocarrill del Sur.
Lo mejor que he visto en ferrocarriles andinos ... ya estoy buscando la anterior parte , y luego las siguientes . Gracias x el trabajo de filmación !!! Saludos !!

Truly the most amazing "ride along" video I've ever seen. I got to see this railway in a documentary that had shown some of the most incredible rail journeys in the world, but viewing it like this was absolutely amazing. Thanks for sharing your experience!

at 10:39 they are out of the dead end tunnel and now somehow they are on the front of the loco? How did the loco get in front of the train? Are they on the other end of the train now?
See at 10:41 there are two tracks. The unit has come up on the one on the right, stopped in the siding that is in the tunnel, then it heads off up the left hand track. It does this several times, so the camera sometimes looks foward, sometimes back. Look up switchback railway on Google. It is a practical way of gaining height. Remember it is going to climb 4k meters.
If you look at 11:15 you can see the tracks down below that the unit has come up, stopped, and returned.
It is not called casapalanca, it is casapalca I have lived there my father worked for three decades in the mining industry. I still remember traveling on the passenger train to the city of Lima, Huancayo, and Cerro de Pasco, beautiful memories, thank you for the video.

Awesome trip but some sections were repeated such as the Cacray switchback sequence. Very scary cliff hugging track with 3000’ drops. I would love to know how often rockfalls occur and have there been any major accidents ? love the power unit sounds thogh bursts of flames from the stack were alarming. Watch the helmets of the two up front compared to the track and see just how uneven the track is sometimes.
Hmmmm I don't see the repeats, do you mind giving me a time? I probably spliced a clip in at the wrong time. Thanks for the comment, one has to abandon any fear of heights if they are going to ride the railroad. Thankfully heights are not a problem for me, I knew if anything did happen that would be the end of me, but at that point I was in heaven already so I did not care! There have been major accidents with rockfalls but they are not common, more commonly happens during the rainy season. The flames are quite common on this style of loco, even at normal altitude due to poor fuel delivery system. Thank you for watching!

@@nikosjk1 The closest I've been to this trip was in Sri Lanka between Colombo and Batticaloa over the hills just under 2000 metres over sea level, from the west coast to the east coast. One station is on the ridge where I could look down on both sides, yup I took pictures there...

The town's name near the end is 'Casapalca'. Lived there for four years with family as a lad in the late 50's, but in the small village just south called Bellavista, where the tracks curved across the Rimac and went on to the switchback at Chicla.
Just seeing this comment but cool to hear from someone who lived along this line! I guess it was mainly steam locomotives back in those days?
@@nikosjk1 Yes, all steam until 1963 when the mining company purchased an early model ALCO diesel road/switcher. The Peruvian rail corporation had been using diesels for a year or two by then if I recall...not positive. But up to 1963, the steam comprised Baldwin 2-8-0 and Beyer-Garratt 2-6-6-2, which were monsters by comparison.

Ferrocarril Central Andino (FCCA) is the consortium that operates the Ferrovías Central railway in Peru that connects the Pacific port of Callao and the capital Lima with Huancayo and Cerro de Pasco. As one of the Trans-Andean railways, it is the second highest in the world built by the Polish engineer Ernest Malinowski in 1871-1876.
