- The new Albula tunnel has opened on the line between Chur and St. Moritz and in this video from Paolo, we're going to pass through it.
The original tunnel, completed in 1903, was in need of refurbishment and a number of options were explored on how to proceed. The best option was found to be building a new tunnel next to the old one, before refurbishing the old one for use as an emergency exit tunnel. This variant avoided interruptions in rail traffic on the line, whilst improving safety and allowing a higher top speed in the new tunnel.

I use train videos to read.... then sleep.
My favorite thing to do now is get up early in the morning when it's dark and quiet on my farm here and watch these train rides all over the world.

WOW! Even on what we in Scotland would describe as a 'dreich' day, Switzerland manages to look magnificent. The quality of the infrastructure too is way beyond that in most countries. You build your railways (and your entire country) the way you make watches - with precision and attention to detail and finish. Even the stations which serve villages which consist of little more than 3 cottages and a cow shed are fully finished and cared for. Many thanks to you and RhB for this delightful video. I may not have the energy or finances to travel much these days but I can, at least, do so vicariously with your assistance. Thanks again. As we say in Scots - Lang may yer lum reek. I LOVE trains, that's why I'm here...but, wow, Switzerland is a GORGEOUS country. I have to visit Switzerland someday before I die.
Finde die Schweiz auch sehr schön. Nicht nur die Landschaft sondern auch die Organisation der Gesellschaft. Meine damit die Presse wie z.B. die NZZ oder auch "Die Weltwoche". Und auch die Volksabstimmungen. D erinnert mich da eher an DDR.

I am always amazed how the clouds hang around the mountains in the Alpine region. And when you are there at that elevation or higher you can almost reach out and grab the clouds like a ball of cotton floating in the sky. I remember our drive from Ulm to Innsbruck. It’s so beautiful

Many thanks, Paolo and Lori. I was intrigued to see that, while the tunnels were operational in 1903, the viaducts between them opened a year earlier, 1902. Presumably, unfinished tunnels were available for work crews and equipment to use when building the viaducts.
The viaducts were faster to build. As simply as that 👍👍

Gerne. Das ist übrigens die erste Führerstandsfahrt wo man in den Tunnels gute Lichtverhältnisse hat. Mit der GoPro sieht man in den Tunnels nichts. 👍👍

This route never gets old. The spectacular scenery seen in different seasons, the marvelous early last century railroad engineering and craftmanship, and a well-maintained system. Still, it's sad to see the great old tunnels being destroyed in the name of modernization.
At least the new tunnel portal is built the same way as the old, with stone masonry
@@nicolasn6872 I noticed that, and thought it was nice they did that. I was actually referring to the "upgrading" of the several old tunnels to the new standard.
@@nicolasn6872at first Unesco wanted the same one, small as before but you can't build a bigger tunnel for safety and leave two small portals at the entrances. So eventuelly Unesco accepted the idea from the rhaetian railway which looks fanstastic in my opinion. 👍
