Episode 21
Batman may be the best NES game that's based on a live action movie! Many other licensed games were terrible, but Sunsoft actually took the time to make an incredible game.
It's often compared to Ninja Gaiden, and while the game mechanics are similar, the feel of the games is very different.
Surprisingly, the Joker wasn't the final boss in the first draft of this game! Joker was added to the final version, and he is easily one of the most difficult final bosses in the entire NES library!

Thought i would try this game again spent hours playing left my NES on to try stage 5 again in morning got in bed saw this video and 30 mins later I have finished batman for first time 😍 thank you for a great video. I got some unfinished business with ninja gaiden next

Good luck on Ninja Gaiden! I'm sure if you can beat Batman you can do it. The most important thing is just knowing you might have to play that mean last level more than once, but if you do, you get to bring Spin Slash, and you can't lose.

@@voltrondefofunv5708 try not punching, just dodge and pay attention to his pattern. May take awhile but do that with every character and you’ll get there. Been a long time but I use to be able to beat punch out without a single down. Takes a lot of practice .
This game has an awesome soundtrack. The graphics really pushed the NES to its limits, looks incredible.
I think Sunsoft's Batman is the finest movie tie-in game ever made for any system. Thanks for a great video on it!

It really had a great soundtrack. Same for the Batman & Robin: TAS game
Sunsoft and Capcom always had great music. And that game actraiser from enix has pretty. Good graphic . enix always had really good graphics as well as music.
I can't believe I was so close to the end! I was 3 jumps away from the top and I always messed up the wall jump. Now I'll be able to try again with a renewed confidence! Thank you!

I remember waking up at around 4 and secretly playing this game on my famicom 🤣🤣 good times.
Let’s not gloss over how amazing the music in this game is. Great video, loving this channel. I never beat any of these games as a kid. I was very young when playing these and hadn’t hit my stride yet, but the few times I have revisited any of these, I found them unbelievably hard and bailed out

I think I get why select is pause and start is weapon swap. With it set like that you can keep Batman moving while switching weapons. Less chance of getting hit and no need to stop what you're doing to change weapons.
I didn't own this game as a kid but one of my best friend's did and I'd play it at his house. Difficult but the look, feel, and sound was amazing. This game is a great example for why pixel art took off.
Thank you so much for posting this! I had quit playing this game and all my NES games for awhile because of the difficulty. But I can now make it far further in this Batman game than before and am enjoying it finally!
Batman throwing criminals to their death was his core trait in the comics. In Detective Comics #27: "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate", Batman's debut, he lifts a fat man named Stryker over his head and throws him into a vat at Apex Chemicals and says "A fitting end for his kind", before disappearing through an open skylight. Batman was created to be a pulp action hero like The Phantom, he even used guns. The reason he stopped killing and using guns was because of the Comics Code Authority. Now while we all love the more heroic Batman of the 60 Adam West show and 90s animated series, we must NEVER forget Batman started off as a deadly gun-toting vigilante. In fact, I want to see a story where that is his character arc, shifting from vigilante to hero after her first battle with Joker and Joker's determination to break Batman is to try and get him to revert back to his deadly ways as a never-ending reminder of how he started.
Man, I'm glad I found your channel after your TMNT video showed up in my recommended. This was another one of my favorite NES games. I think I coveted it even more because my buddy owned it and I only got to play it when he let me borrow it. I could never beat the Joker. He did, but apparently right after he did his older brother jumped up in excitement and ended up yanking the NES down for the tv stand because the controller cord was under his shoe. The game of course reset and he never got to see the ending.

I like watching speedruns but watching the game get completely destroyed isn't a learning experience most of the time. This channel is a refreshing change of pace.

6:43 some third party controllers offer a "slow motion feature" that rather consists in a "turbo pause mode", which is commonly set in the start button. By placing the pause function in the select button this and other games avoid the use of that feature and prevent cheapening the experience. Game developers use that strategy or set a long "pause sequence" like in the Street Fighter II franchise for SNES -I had the games and system so I totally remember it.

My brother brought over a shoe box of old NES games. This was one in the collection that I've never even played. Going to give it a whirl on the original hardware!
My mother bought me this game for Christmas was I was 10. Had NO IDEA I was getting it (I hinted around it to her), but i went crazy on Christmas morning when "Santa " got it for me!!
Loved this game. Perfect difficulty level too imo. Challenging but not impossible, and when you die you feel like it was your own fault and not something cheap in the game. Sometimes enemies respawn too fast and thats annoying, but other than that its ok I think. Joker isnt bad at all once you know the pattern.
The firts 4 levels are hard but doable. But the last one is hell. An on top of that, you go all the way back if you die against fire bug and joker.
I can't tell if the voice is a robot or human. xD

The music is great. Got my kids humming it. That's when you know it's that good.
I believe the Start button being used to switch weapons instead of the Select button helps the player being as comfortable as possible. The Start button is closer to the B and A buttons on the controller, so it might just be better to take your fingers off the jump and attack buttons to switch weapons instead of taking your fingers off your movement buttons. Sure it takes a fraction of a second to press the button if you're quick enough, but a fraction of a second still could make a difference in combat with a boss, for example.
Another game that did something similar was Godzilla on the NES. Godzilla can punch with B, kick with A, and the assigned button for his atomic fire is Start, surely because Start is closer to the action buttons than Select is.
I beat this game back in the day. Totally enjoyed it

Thanks for the sub!! This game was def tough as a kid - I remember the first time I beat the Joker, I used Game Genie for infinite lives (and maybe Infinite ammo, too) and fought him for HOURS. At some point I finally won, probably got a little bit lucky. Tried to beat it again another time and couldn't do it. It was so refreshing to come back as a adult and really beat him.
No way i get beyond 3-1 without this video. Thanks for a great walkthrough!
My good friend had this game when we were kids and I remember it being oh so so damn difficult for us kids who were like 10 years old or so. It was a huge accomplishment for us when we finally beat it. We were able to get to Joker multiple times before but it was some random saturday afternoon we finally managed to beat him. The feeling was awesome.
The game also has a totally awesome soundtrack. I would say it's only second to Mega Man 3 soundtrack.
My best friend and I got to the Joker a couple of times back in 1990, but I don't think we ever beat him. Love your videos :)

I borrowed this game from my friend back when I was in high school I could never beat the second stage I only had it for 2 days good memories playing this it kind of reminds me of castlevania

Always interesting to learn a bit of history about the games. That was actually a good approach Sunsoft had. Start development before trying for the license so you have a better quality game.
I feel like this wasnt going to be a batman game at all and they changed some stuff and added the sprites. Think about it, joker wasnt supposed to be in the game, the enemies were just weird and way off, the wall jump hmm?

This game was so cool with its dark graphics and killer soundtrack.
The reason they chose the Start button (instead of Select) to cycle through weapons is so you'd be able to switch while having better control of moving. If you need to switch weapons while walking or in the middle of a jump, you don't have to worry about taking your thumb off the D-pad at all. This way you have full control of Batman at all times with no interruption. The SNES, thankfully, introduced shoulder buttons.
That's a really good point, AJR. I can see that making a lot of sense, especially if testing this game for hours internally, I could see coming to the conclusion that the button on the right side was better for changing weapons on the fly.
It's hard to fight against the muscle memory that you get from the 99% of other games that use START as Pause, but I suppose if you try to play this game on a high level - like a speed run or something - I can see keeping your thumb on the D-Pad as being important.
Also means you can switch while ducking easily, which may be the difference between getting hit and not.
