Great video. A cool trick in mission 2 is when u climb the fence and steal the bat from the Williams then fall off that ledge to the other side. Walk to the enemy at the top to trigger him to walk just past the girder. Then climb the fence and go all the way to the other side and fall off the fence. Then climb the fence walk back towards the other side and fall again off the fence ( avoid falling into the pit). Walk near the girder and start hitting the punch or kick button. For some reason, the game glitches and it thinks a Williams will b there. If you do it right you'll hear a sound as if you're hitting something. You can do this and basically farm all the XP hearts and get all you're techniques. I know that's long winded and that I hope i explained it well enough.
The great thing about "The Invisible Williams Trick" is that you will have the level 6 elbow strike just in time to face the double Abbobos at the end of the forest section of Mission 3. 3 elbow strikes a piece will put them down real quick. Doesn't make a ton of sense, because it wouldn't seem like an elbow strike, irl, would inflict that much damage on a giant slab of meat like Abbobo, but that is video game logic for you.
I was thinking this the moment that section came up in the vid! Its nice to know that other people still remember this trick! Going through the rest of the game fully powered up was so helpful.
The arcade version was my greatest achievement. My parents bowled and would give us two quarters all night so you had to make them last. You got fifty thousand on Double Dragon"
@11:30 there's a way you can max up your XP points by kicking an invisible bad guy. It involves dropping off the chain fence before the screen scrolls over, climbing back up and going all the way back to the left, then heading back...It's been years since I've played so I don't remember all the details. Also, if you pick up the Linda's whip as it's blinking, sometimes it turns into a bat with nails. You can then keep it up the tower and mash them.
Your weapon disappears when the hitchhiker's thumb pops up, telling you to progress to the next area. So if you swing the bat for example, just as the thumb appears, the bat will glitch and take on the appearance of a rectangle with a cross on it. I always thought of it as a birthday gift. Like after knocking the guy out, he says "happy birthday" and throws a present at him. 😆
"Woah, am I still playing Nintendo? Or did I accidently change the channel to Law & Order SVU?" LOL. This was one of my favorite NES games. Great video!
Wow i never knew that Machine gun Willy trick, i always beat him the hard way. What i love to do in that final boss room is stand just right of the door, and Elbow the enemies as soon as they come out. You can beat both Lindas with one Elbow, and the door won't even have time to close! Thought you'd show the level up trick from mission 2 :O
I was trying to space out the levels so you can see how the moves change over the course of the game, but I probably should have shown that level up trick - I could have done it as a separate clip and then went back to the game. Thanks for watching!
Hell yes! Anybody come that door getting an elbow. Willy and jimmy get it too. After elbowing will 5 times you can sit on him an go in on his face. Jimmy i fight straight up after that first elbow at the door.
10:26 if you trhow a punch while being between the 2 girders Billy will fall down, but if you take the whip with you and use it while being up there it'll get stuck in the wall. It's a good way to get rid of the whip while Lindas are on screen.
Fun little trick you can do near end of mission 2 so to switch from whip to bat. Get the whip from Linda and fight your way up a bit. Take a hit so to drop it. After you take the last Linda out quick go to pick up the whip before she fades and it'll switch to a bat. Cool vid.
Oh man so many memories! Can’t remember how many times I finished this game as a kid. My main strategy in this game was always just try to get to 4 hearts as quickly as possible by beating everyone to death using all punches in Mission 1, even the Linda with a whip which got tricky sometimes. I can get 4 hearts usually either by the end of Mission 1 or the start of Mission 2. Then just kneesmash-throw everyone to death. Usually got 7 Hearts already by the end of Mission 2, or start of Mission 3 so I could just throw any amount of elbows or mount-punches that I wanted. Not a fan of the whirlwind kick at 7 hearts though since everyone dodged it. Good thing it got upgraded in Double Dragon 2. First time, I’ve seen that Machinegun Willy trick, & that was pretty dope. From what I remember, there’s a certain distance that if you kick even just once, you immediately go into the Hairgrab manuever, your foot had to be aligned to their foot while they were lying down, & the moment they stand up, you kick them once & it goes into the instant Hairgrab. Worked on everyone except Jimmy for me, since he broke out of hairgrabs. For Jimmy, i just tried to spam kicks from range, thats not within hairgrab distance, the very tip of Billy’s foot isn’t hairgrab distance, the Billy’s foot has to be going into the enemy sprite to do the hair-grab. like your doublekick-elbow technique better though. More flashy. Love your videos man. Kudos to you & keep ‘em coming
I...I don't...*dumbfounded* I've played DD since it was released. I...has it ALWAYS had the XP system?! Your videos HAVE NEVER failed to teach me VALUABLE things about classic games. Well done sir. Got a patreon? You might be worth jt.
I had zero clue about the experience levels. I just played the master system port and thought nes was the same. great eye-opening video as always, thanks!
Nice walkthrough man - I couldn’t get that trick with the Green Abobo’s working but honestly it’s very easy just to spam the back elbow there (I think maybe a touch more emphasis on how useful that attack is would help newbies) also cool tip I found out by accident; at 17:16 if you mess up there, get hit by dynamite or whatever, just go back out the door you came in and come back in - energy bar and clock reset again, no penalty at all. Great advice on the levelling system too, I tend to do the 3 punch and run trick you demonstrate at the start, throughout the whole of the first 2 missions, you can have all 7 hearts by the start of mission 3 and not have to worry anymore 🙂
When the enemy throws a knife at u, u can block it by jump kicking. In the 2nd level, u can climb up the fence as soon as the williams bros come onto the screen. Then walk back until u get to the beginning of the fence. Then walk back to the other side and jump down then start attacking where the williams were standing. U can punch at air and max out ur heart points.
I was at the right ages for NES and SNES original releases. I remember the NES often could not duplicate graphics of arcade games. Technology, in only a few years between NES and SNES, improved a ton. I remember being so excited to actually play a game the way it looked in the arcade at home on the SNES. Street Fighter 2 for example.
Playing this game a lot back in the early 90s i remember playing and beating it solo a few times with Bimmy and found it awesome to be able to play it as jimmy as well but only if selecting 2 player mode so i would intentionally select 2 players when my friends were not around and let the first one die so i could play with the "red character" as i remembered it back then. Just a little extra that gave it replay value in those simple straight forward videogame times.
Surprised at 11:38 you didn't show the trick how to level up completely. You get a Will enemy to walk up to the top near the steel beams. Just when he's about to the edge of the steel beams, climb back up the fence and go all the way to the left, then all the way back. You can hit the steel beams with punches, kicks, or the bat and just rack up points like there is an invisible enemy there. You can get full hearts by doing this.
This was one of the very first video games I ever watched played by someone else, when my I went over to my friend's house sometime in 1988 and he had this loaded up. I was 8 I think.
There's a trick at 11:47 at the red steel bars were you must leave a enemy at the edge of the steel bar and then you go back and climb the fence and if you move to the left and return back to the steel bar the enemy will disappear and will allow you to hit indefinitely to get all the hearts easily.
This was the very first video of this channel I watched. I love the channel by the way. I'm surprised that you didn't include the experience gain exploit in Mission 2. On Mission 2, when you come to fence that you climb, knock down the first two Williams enemies & walk climb down from the fence & walk forward until the other Williams enemies come out. When the one on the top moves to the left side of the stack of beams in the background, climb up the fence & walk to the left. The enemies that you left behind will be gone. Walk to the edge & turn around & walk back to the right. You'll notice that the enemies are gone. Climb down the fence, but don't advance the screen too far. Walk to the left side of the background beams where that enemy was standing & start attacking. You'll gain experience points for every attack you land. I prefer to have the bat in hand when doing this. Once you've got 7 hearts, you can proceed at the maximum experience level.
Should have totally mentioned that trick! I wanted to show the progression of the fighting moves as the game went on, but I could have easily cut away, and still showed the trick. Thanks for watching!
More xp from kicking than using weapons. Less per hit, but many more hits. At 11:40, if you don't fight that guy and walk back to where you were at 11:34, you can go back to wherever the guy stopped walking at and kick the air for infinite xp. Great video. I didn't know how to not get shot in such an easy way. I tried to hair grab him while he was off either side of the screen. Not super reliable.
Few things that I know that will make life a bit easier: 1. The infinite XP glitch in Mission 2. After you cross the chasm and down the fence, the two Williams will show up. If you have the bat, once the topmost Williams gets to the leftmost side of the girders are in the background, go back up the fence, walk to the left as far as the platform goes (don't have to go down the other fence for this to work), and then go back and strike that spot where you left the Williams. No Williams is there anymore, but you will hear the striking sound as if you are hitting something. You can just sit there and max out your hearts. Then use the Chin quick kill glitch to finish this mission if time is low. 2. The other weird thing is at the final area of the final mission. That knife the Chin has? When you see him drop it, DON'T PICK IT UP! This trick requires precision timing and might be near frame perfect, but if you pick up the knife just as the last Chin blinks for the 3rd time, pick it up. You might have heard of this glitch before, but it will turn into a weird glitchy weapon. The Lindas will come out. Before you down them, allow one to knock the weapon out of your hand. Repeat the process as you did with the Chins. It will glitch out further. Rinse and repeat with the Wropers. If you did this right, it will turn into some club looking thing that you can use against Willy, which will be extremely powerful. Also, don't climb all the way up those ladders on level 1. This game can be very glitchy, and if you climb off the screen there, you can't get back down (I don't know the reason Technos switched port companies from Tradewest to Acclaim, but I would think DD's weird limitations and how glitchy it could be could have been reasons).
I always level up quick on the chintais. Jump kick to knock them down, stand on their knees, then use the punch combo as soon as they get up. If you're close enough they won't be able to hit you.
Secret trick for leveling up. 11:41 When you reach this part of mission 2, lure the enemy coming from the right to the top of the area, and wait by the fence on the left. When he is lined up with the bottom left corner of the stack of girders in the background, begin climbing. He'll freeze there while you do so. Then head to the left across the top of the fence. When you reach the far left portion, return to the right. Once you descend the fence again, the enemy will have disappeared. But a glitch still has his hitbox in that area. Keep attacking the empty area where he disappeared from and you'll gain experience points for beating on nothing. Simply keep doing this and you can be completely leveled up in mere minutes. This way not only do you have all the moves super early, but you also can utilize whatever attacks you want without worrying about the potential exp points you're sacrificing.
You can build to max heart level on the first screen on the game by punching until the enemy reaches pain state where they await the final hit (usually 3 or 4) hits. If you move away from the enemy while they are in this pain state then come back and repeat once they clear the pain state, you can infinitely repeat this process. The enemies will not be killed until they are actually knocked down. So mind your time left and max your levels through the first screen.
I could never beat this as a kid. The instant deaths and or traps always drained my lives so I never got to learn the later levels. Two years ago when my son got a Switch for his birthday, we got him the NES/SNES library subscription and it was the first game I played on it. When I discovered there was a rewind feature and save states… I was like… ok, I’m beating this no matter what it takes, because really… you can’t fail. I gotta say, I don’t know if it’s the Switch emulation or I’m just old and terrible and out of practice… this game was STILL tough to beat for me, but I gotta say, it was satisfying to play it through even though I was cheating my balls off. Now… I didn’t have any of the strategies you shared at my disposal, but maybe this is one I revisit in the MiSTer.
Listening to the Mission 3 forest music on Double Dragon reminds me of "The Wizard" -- Haley getting a game over when her player is knocked back into the water and saying "let's see if he can beat THAT" -- referring to Jimmy. lol
All he missed up already in mission 2 after you climb the fence when the enemies are by that pile of beams line them up at the very corner of the pile if you climb the fence, and go back to the other side and then go back again they will be gone, and you can start beating the crap out of that area where they were at and it will give you the experience points until your fully powered up. Loved 😍that trick as a kid.
You forgot to mention the experience trick in Mission 2 and the weapon glitch in the final level. Always enjoy your videos bro on my way to work or long trips.
There's a trick in stage 2 that can help you max out your levels early. Climb the first fence, take out the Williams on top and grab his bat. Climb down the second fence and spawn the Williams down by the pile of girders. Let him get to the end of the pile then climb back up the second fence and return to the left. Go back to the right and the Williams will appear to be gone but if you hit the spot where he was at the end of the pile of girders, you will earn points just as if he was there. You can just keep swinging the bat until you reach the highest level.
19:40....Mission 4 always haunted me even as a child playing this. The moving pillars are always unpredictable when they start moving. Had it not been for that part of the game, I would have beaten that veeery long ago, and still have not beaten this ever since its release.
The trick with the chintai is to knock him down once and then stand at the base of his feet and punch. Once he gets up you will hit him with punches getting slots of experience and he will never have a chance to hit you. Keep repeating until he’s gone.
Never could beat this as a kid. Legendary music though. I think I made it to the caves. Also didn’t know about experience system. My fav nes game i think

Great video!
the wall of death was the hardest part in the game, i'm still convinced there's no pattern. i always lose a couple of lives on that part!
there IS a pattern, but is to long and in the end, i preffer just to run and hope for the best
Strategy video: th-cam.com/video/gH6qFaPEE60/w-d-xo.html
I vividly remember 4 hits and you're dead. The childhood version of gambling 😂
Cool vid.
I tried playing last night thinking I could beat it cuz I’ve watched your video before but nope. Now I gotta watch it again. All of it.
I...I don't...*dumbfounded*
I've played DD since it was released. I...has it ALWAYS had the XP system?!
Your videos HAVE NEVER failed to teach me VALUABLE things about classic games. Well done sir. Got a patreon? You might be worth jt.
Been binge watching the channel, I always loved this game. My friends thought I was a gaming god because I could beat this. Lol
I probably would have, too! Thanks, Kuros!
I had zero clue about the experience levels. I just played the master system port and thought nes was the same. great eye-opening video as always, thanks!
This was incredible! I could never beat the forest stage so this was a great watch.
Glad you liked it! the forest stage is really tough!
I did not know about that Green Abobo trick!!!!
Great video :)
Double Dragon 2 is my favorite of the NES trilogy as well. Heck, I even like the SNES Super Double Dragon game. DD is just a good solid franchise!
Absolutely love your channel! You deserve waaaay more subs!
Thank you!!
We gotta get you 100,000 subs man. I’m sharing the shit outta this channel.
I can’t tell you how long I have played this game and have never known that you can enter that cave in Level 3. That blew my mind
The SVU comparison was chef’s kiss 🤌
I played this game when it released, games at that time were different but omg so Cool 😎 too play ! The feeling is never the same with games today!!
God I THRASHED the hell outta this game as a kid. Time to settle down and enjoy me some nostalgia.
And that OST..... brilliant.
This was one of the very first video games I ever watched played by someone else, when my I went over to my friend's house sometime in 1988 and he had this loaded up. I was 8 I think.
Hello my childhood. Nice to see you again :’-)
Few things that I know that will make life a bit easier:
This game use to make me cry as a kid!
Secret trick for leveling up.
11:41
When you reach this part of mission 2, lure the enemy coming from the right to the top of the area, and wait by the fence on the left.
That's what I would usually do. I wouldn't max myself out completely on the first screen, but by the end of Mission 1 I'd be maxed out or close to it.
Thanks, Andrew - I definitely mention that in the video!
great work man, I stumbled on you and I am glad I did !
Thanks M P!
Nice. I gotta try that sometime when I can get a copy of the game.
15:50 abobo's get dealt with, with elbows at 6 hearths. It's mandatory to have it there.
You forgot to mention the experience trick in Mission 2 and the weapon glitch in the final level. Always enjoy your videos bro on my way to work or long trips.
Just beat DD on NES TODAY 1ST time EVER thanks to the Machine gun willy tip! Thanks dude!!
That's so awesome! It makes me feel so good to hear that I helped someone finish a game. Thanks, Whild Hair83!
Still play the arcade version , great video as always.
With the help of all your information i DID IT !!!! thanks for hte great video !
I love your videos! They have helped me beat several games. Thanks for the great content!
19:50 is usually my Kryptonite. I'll try your strat and see what happens.
Double Dragon was my first and only game i beat in the arcade
Nothing compares to the arcade version. I spent so many hours of my life on that thing. No regrets
omg I'm super bad at beat and shoot em ups but this was informative and fun for me, thank you UCBV
Just started checking out your videos. Extremely well put together. Will be checking them all out.
That's awesome, thank you so much!!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames No problem. Really appreciate the content. Even though I beat most of these the presentation makes them worth watching. Just recently beat Ghosts N Goblins arcade. The NES one plays much worse so I will definately be referring to your video when I beat that. I like all the exploits you find in these games.
For the arcade G and G you can actually de-spawn the first single demon boss. The stage with the two demon bosses took around 7 hours to beat though. Very hard checkpoint.
Yeah, Arcade G&G is crazy hard.
Glad you're enjoying the channel - I try to find as much new and interesting strategies as possible!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Its great to see different strategies for these games.
I seem to recall that elbows at level 6 are insanely strong. They were my go-to attack if you can't throw them off screen/into a pit (for an instant death).
Great trick with Abobo and Willie here.
Green Abobo trick makes up for you missing Lvl 2 XP exploit. Props!
