The SECRET to Jason's movement pattern - it's NOT random!
How to defeat Jason's Mother to find the BEST ITEMS!

Friday the 13th is in my top 5 nes games of all time. I bought it in 1990 and it took me about a week to beat it. I studied Jason’s patterns, developed a strategy and can beat it in about 30 minutes. No cheats or speed runs. All children and counselors survive. Just good ol fashion fight to the death. Only weapon needed is the machete. I may need to make my own video because I haven’t seen anyone do it the same way!
Hell yeah, I'd watch it - Never liked the idea of using them as bait.
I remember it took my buddy and I teaming up in our early 20's to beat this nightmare. Last counselor, last kid, last fight... adrenaline was high.
Indeed!!!!
I legitimately did not know Jason had a set path he walked like that. Learn something new every day!
I play this game at least once a week and have never known that
Even serial killers have to organize their day my guy. He may be a monster but he’s not messy!!!
So, the players are pretty much disturbing his usual walk in the park...
It feels like a crime drama: figuring out the criminal's moves so you know how to get one step ahead of them.
Interesting that he has three spawn points. Ups the replayability of the game by a decent margin.
This is the best new youtube channel I have discovered in a long time. You are making really great videos! I LOVE the format.
I feel the same 😁
@ U Can Beat Video Games, This game terrified me because the sound it made when Jason popped up inside the cabin ALWAYS made me jump. I couldn't figure out why even though I prepared for his appearance.... and it's only a game but every single time ugh!
Thank you!! 😁
I couldn't agree with you more. I mean, I like watching playthroughs, but all they offer is just watching someone play a game. With these videos, we get a killer explanation for everything as well as the enjoyment of watching someone beat a game in however many ways it's possible to beat it. I seriously hope that this channel gets large enough to financially support this guy so that he can make these videos more often.
Now I'm off to watch the Duck Tales video!

Man-child
im 40 and i still love retro video games as much as when i was a kid . I grew up with the NES , Mario , Zelda , Willow , Startropics , Faxanadu , PUnch out , Paperboy etc.. etc.. . Call me immature , man child or whatever , i dont give a f*** . You live your life the way you want .
I have always loved this game even when I was a kid. You had to turn off the sound in the cabin with Jason to avoid the jump scare, haha! This has always been the biggest disservice to video games, it's just a great game. Thanks for setting the record straight!
One of my favorite NES games! Great explanation of the game! My friend and I played this every day after school for months and eventually learned most of the tricks. Jason’s indoor pattern is actually very predictable and easy once you learn it. I don’t consider the game beaten unless I save all counselors and children. Once you learn how to fight him inside, he’s pretty easy. Way easier than fighting Mrs. Vorhees.
"We can just hang out here until Jason's done killing our friend"... LOL
What are friends for?
Lmao
The best part is that you can actually go into a house and switch to a different character fight him and then go back to what you were doing
It's a recurring theme, too.
"Jason is currently attacking the lake, so we don't have to worry about him."
"Whenever there are five or more children, we can consider them expendable." 🤣
The other option is Jason killing both of us. I'm sure our friend would understand 😂
What a flashback. I can’t remember if I fully beat this game but I do know I played it probably realistically 1000 times if not way more. As a kid I definitely did not think this was a horrible game. Ya Nintendo games back then were incredibly punishing and not forgiving at all. I did beat contra. I did beat ninja turtles. The one game I tried so many times, always got close but just could never get to the end was Blaster Master. I still own it and hope one day I get the inspiration to grind through it. Lastly nes games did so much for such limited memory. Kids of today have no idea
I used to draw parts of the levels as a child, completely agree it's misunderstood
T&C Surf Design is one of my favorite NES titles. (even though I still have NO IDEA how to do the surf stages)
Great video as usual.
If memory serves me right, all you need to do to cheese the surf stages is (while holding B) up (until you near the top of the wave), down to gain speed, right to check if you're close to shore, repeat. Basically you're just riding the wave by repeatedly doing up/down/right, and after a while you'll see the edge of the pier piles which means you just hold right until you surf into shore.
These guys did an amazing job creating this game with what they had to work with.
Im 41yrs young. But lemme tell ya.... This brings back some memories! I played this game often. And I loved it.
Note: It isn't true that the sweater can only be worn by female characters. All camp players can wear it with the same defense.
Plus getting it in one of Pacnsacdave's three hacks of this game means everyone gets it.
The music in this game is actually low key fantastic.

The music still haunts me to this day! Great old school horror on the ORIGINAL NES

me, too, hahaha, but I beat it several times as a kid, took me a while, though
@@mathewhorodner2000 Yeah lol, I beat Jason a few times then got tired of the repetitiveness lol. TMNT now that game was hard as hell haha!
@veganhigler6541 Yeah same, the music still hits different haha
When I was a kid I was legit freaked out by this game too
It never clicked to me that a girl was supposed to wear the sweater. I just crushed it with Mark every time. LOL.
Thanks for the nostalgia trip.
He's actually wrong about this. It increases any counselors defense. I've played and beaten this game dozens of times once I found out the torch trick years ago and he's actually just wrong on this. It would be cute but there's nothing in the game code that signifies a female from a male in this.
It's only the modern game that needs that. To kill Jason in that, you need both Nedry and a female with the sweater.
. I also agree. Beaten this game, lost no counselers and no kids. Though you need a fast counselor to chase and attack Jason day 2 and 3.
I love this channel. I couldn't beat any of these games as kid so it's just awesome to see someone blast through these games.
I remember how pissed this game used to make me. I love that you are showing this one.
I have such a long history with this game, from having it terrify me at a young age, to coming back when I was in college to give it another try, to finally admitting I didn't know what I was doing and looking it up on TH-cam years later to see if anyone else had beaten it, only to discover people had torn the game apart, figured out its quirks, and re-assembled it into something not only playable, but enjoyable.
Seeing this on your channel is so delightful! :)
THANK YOU! this game is astoundingly difficult and no other video or guide has been this helpful to beating it
Friday the 13th Legacy of the Wizard and Wrath of the Black Manta are 3 of my most Nostalgic NES games from my childhood
I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but in the cave if you don't have the flashlight, pay attention to the rocks on the floor. The rocks with the cracks are where the doors are.
You can actually equip the sweater with a male counselor, but it does fit more with the movie's narrative to use Crissy to equip it instead, since she's female and the strongest female. Also if you light the large cabins in a different order (outside path, cave path, then lake path), you'll also get the torch in addition to the flashlight. Probably a good idea to have one of your other counselors go to the children's cabin sometimes, so you don't lose 5 kids early on, since you can only afford to have that happen twice in 1 game.
1. Your reviews are engaging.
2. Your transitions to gameplay are smooth
3. There's always thought put into that opening display of "games like this one".
4. The way you present items and game mechanics remains 5 star.
Well done in all regards.
Been waiting for this one, I'm addicted to F13 reviews!
Awesome!~!
I HATED this game when I was a kid! And now, having watched this video, I still hate it, but at least I know I could beat it if I wanted to.
Same. It's not as bad as I remember it being, but much like E.T., I still don't like it.
I rented this game so many times trying to force myself to like it. I couldn't do it, mainly because I had no idea what I was doing or where I was going.
I know what you're saying. This game's awful and even my nostalgic memories were bad with this game. I don't think it necessarily to bring up the issues with this game as anyone that's played it surely knows that nothing works the way it should. Even the map doesn't work but that's enough about this doo doo ball of a game.
@@hermanherman5834 the map works, im a pro software developer and they did a great job with the map. There's no other way to make a MAP work in a 2d environment
@@aoccza7 I think it's possible to make the indicator on the map show you on the right side of the map when you are actually moving in that direction onnyhe screen instead of on the left. The map is almost mirrored from the players actual location at times on this game. There were plenty of NES games that had a map that worked well enough to at least give you a general idea of where the player is so no this was just lame design. If you still enjoyed the game then you got something out of it that most people didn't seem to. I've not met many people that actually recalled this game as something they'd actually play these days. It's got that certain nostalgic pull to it that brings back memories of renting it as a kid but the game itself just doesn't cut it for a fun experience purely for it's gameplay. That's my experience with it anyway.
Its a dark and rainy saturday here in central fl. That means its time for another video from "

I have to comment on the fact that even though this game didn’t show up on GOAT lists, you still made a video about a cult classic game that some of us did really appreciate in our youth. I tip my hat to you, sir, and thank you kindly for doing this one for us!
Geez man..where were you in the 90s when I needed these tips!! :) Great video..loved it!
thank you!!
This game is bizarrely deep, I figured it was mostly randomized
One of my fav NES games.
Really? C'mon, it was okaaaay.
I played this game on a penguin console i bought for 60 dollars in a mall store. Came with about 200 games was fun
One of my favs too
I hit the like button as soon as I saw the floof... After watching the video, no regerts
Great coverage of this game. It has Always been one of my faves as a kid and i still play it today. Im really glad to hear that i am not alone in thinking it was underrated
The sweater can be equipped by anyone. He also doesn't start in the upper left, he starts in the upper right and if no one's there he'll be on the upper left. Otherwise his 3rd starting point is at the cave where he'll move to the top right small cabin, so if someone starts in the upper left, they can often take the path up to the cave area and immediately catch him.
The most common seed Jason will start at the cave and Mark will be in the upper left, you got this on your 2nd playthrough. I most likely was the original source for his route through the camp, I was for all of the speedrunners anyway and this goes back a very long time. So anyone else who may've known about the route likely got it from my draw up as every guide up to that point didn't have any data on his routes.
He does enter the small cabins he passes, if you just leave he'll be right outside. So it's better to go to a counselor who's being attacked, switch to someone else to empty it, and leave with your counselor. Indoor fights have easy strategies to dodge besides day 3, you just hit diagonal down left or right.
Awesome!
I loved this game as a kid. It’s amazing how many hours I could put into a “bad” game because of boredom. I never could beat this one though, even though I once got the machete and was able to bulldoze Jason on day two, I didn’t understand the way he moved and was unable to chase him down.
Anyway, great video. Thanks for helping me put this one to bed.
I remember this game as a kid, I had no idea what I was doing but running 😂
Facts! 😂
Awesome channel !. I use to play this game alone once all my friends we're done from playing other more popular nes games, this one intrigued me a lot and i remember spending hours trying to figure out what I was supposed to do and discovering little details like the different weapons or Jason's mother secret chamber. Very good times !
This game was so hard. I owned it and never beat it. It was just pure annoyance. Thanks for doing this! So cool to see the end.
I always loved this game's music, even though I could never beat the game itself. No sitting back and relaxing here as defeating Jason Voorhees is never an easy task.
I did a Remake of that Cabin theme check it out and let me know what you think ^_^ th-cam.com/video/oBuKfhZ18S8/w-d-xo.html
I remember as a kid this game scared the crap out of me when I would try play it at night
it'll def make you jump when Jason pops up in a cabin - that sound effect when he appears is really effective!
Always love the videos. Doesn't matter the game. Your tag line "What if i told you..." always gets me so hyped lol.
You also forgot to mention that you can get the Torch by lighting all of the cabin fireplaces around the map and then the 2 lake ones last as well without even going in the cabin in the woods and avoiding the woods in general
Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels dude. I like the format of doing an intro with background of the game followed by the chill and detailed playthrough. 👍👍
I always wore the sweater with Mark🤬 Thank you so much for this video.
Please dont stop making these!
Cool video with good info. Day 3 is the only day I try and avoid fighting in the cabins. It's possible once you learn how far ahead of his attacks you have to double doge. A good d pad on your controller is a must!
Say what you will, and rightly so,
though the Cabin music is melodic mastery...
It does create that suspense, since Jump scare Jason loves to ruin it with his random encounters...

Im enjoying all of these especially the beginning with the history of each game. Keep it up 👍
Haha i just beat this game yesterday. But i was still glad to watch this. Never knew the pattern jason take but surely a great tip. And also navigating the jungles were always confusion.
I can crush Jason in the cabins. It's a pattern and knowing when to dodge so your missed and can counter is key.
Right. You can actually fight Jason in a cabin and not take any damage.
@@freakctc I have a long time ago. You use the dodges (back left or back right) and time it to .2 of a second after he strikes and you can get a free hit in him. It's all a matter of timing and practice.
T&C Surf Designs is legendary!
Dude you're history of the game's is amazing. You do quality work
You sir have done your homework on this game. I played this several times as a kid, and I had figured out most of the info you provided. I never knew Pamela had the torch on day 1 however. I just thought it was the machete. Then if you had that, then you got the axe.
You have earned yourself a sub.
Man, the first time I played this game I was sleeping over at a friend's house. Late that night, I went to use the bathroom, turned a corner, and ran smack into his big, fat dad in a purple sweatsuit...
Very immersive, I have to say.
You know, in A Nightmare on Elm Street, after Freddy(TM) attacks, he jumps off screen. I usually kept thinking he would come back shortly after that as something else. However, In Friday the 13th, Jason can go away and suddenly appear again. The shift in music makes me nervous to play.
My sister and I were playing a Nightmare on Elm Street one night, and we both got a game over, and the lights in the house went out.
skimmed that real quick thought i saw swimsuit and from what i saw i was expecting you to say you ran into his hot sister in a swimsuit but thats not what happened at all and im sad.
I've legit been wondering for 20+ years if the axe is more powerful than the machete. Such a small piece of game knowledge, but I scoured the internet for years trying to figure it out and was never able to track down that info. This video answered so many lingering questions I've had since I was a kid. Thank you so much for this!

This game gave me nightmares... still addicted to it
I just want everyone to know this game scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.
Yeh they jump scare from the noise when Jason appears always got me. Loved this game. Had so much trouble beating it as a kid in the 1990’s

The bass score alone is huantingly fantastic...
Even watching this makes me feel uneasy, a true testament to how much this game traumatized me as a child. I wouldn't be surprised if it resurfaced an old nightmare tonight
It scared all of us. My friend scratched Jason off the cover of his copy because it scared him LOL.
I'm gonna have "dunna-dunna-dunna-dah" with "screech screech" stuck in my head for ages now
This is so awesome! New Sub here and will be for a long time!

🤣 This reads funny
You have such a lovely, soothing voice. I love falling asleep to your videos when I'm having a restless night.
Thanks for covering this one. I've always loved it and Nightmare on Elm St, even as a kid. So, so, soooo misunderstood and unfairly judged.
I fell asleep to his videos last night! And watching them now at 00:25
Awesome, I'm glad I am here to catch the premier. I discovered this channel during the Rygar episode and have gone through your whole library of playthroughs. Please, keep up the great work!
Thanks Johnny!
I got this game for Christmas one year and was so excited to play it. I played it all night and couldn't figure it out. Then I really didn't like the game because I didn't know what I was doing. But now playing it today, this game is pretty awesome!!! Its a great concept and I like how the layout is. Pretty cool
Gonna love the Strider episode when it drops.
Is that a hint? ;)
This is one game ive always wanted to beat but was discouraged because it was soo bad (LJN) but after your video I wanna try.. thank you for your awesome videos!
This game is much better than its rep. A really unique game for the time.
Totally agree!
Agreed! A lot of games were janky and kinda bad back in the day. But you made 'em work. If you're a kid, you probably weren't allowed to watch scary, gory movies. NES games were a different story! You could rent this and Nightmare over the weekend and have a mini Halloween whenever you needed a spooky boost.
I may never be good enough to beat it myself, but it's still got an eerie atmosphere and running into Jason in the wild is legit scary for an NES title! That said, if you think about what that looks like from the camp staff perspective, they're basically watchin' Jason haul butt up a walking trail for like 3 minutes solid before he gets to them.
Friday the 13th had some issues. For example, the overworld map left/right sucked. But, it had an addictive quality. There was more to discover on each run about how the game worked. It's not as polished as Super Mario 3. But, if Mario 3 is a 10, experientially this was between 7 and 8.
@@tylerhorn3712 Honestly, the left/right movement on the overworld always made perfect sense to me, even as a kid. If you imagine that you're actually walking a circular path, with right being counterclockwise and left being clockwise, everything fits together in a very logical and easy to comprehend way. It was a clever way of creating a complete 3D camp map in a 2D sidescroller format, and that method of map traversal would go on to be used in other games from time to time as well, such as Odin Sphere.
...It's not the most intuitive thing in the world, of course, and the game had a number of OTHER problems, such that I think your 7/8 out of 10 rating is pretty apt. But I don't think the overworld navigation was a point against the game, really -- it was less a flaw, and more an unpopular (but still entirely valid and arguably meritorious) design decision.
@@Wyrdwad maybe I'm missing something here but can you please explain to me why it doesn't make more sense to walk left for counterclockwise and right for clockwise?
Im so impressed with this guys level of knowledge of this game. Last year I was in state prison and in my cell playing this game for months trying to beat it.. crazy things is, when i finally killed Jason, he just got harder and moved faster... Oh and i never saw in the cave there was a witch flying head thing (Jason's mom) But yeah i couldn't best Jason a second time. You need a legit strategy to beat this game. This game is dope AF
This is becoming one of my favorite retro video game channels. I dig the short history lesson before the walkthrough. Any chance you could do Gargoyle's Quest 2?
What if I told you that I love these videos.
And what if I told you that I have watched a bunch of them this week since I found this channel.
And what if I told you that I have been recommending this to friends.
It'd be cool to see a challenge where everyone can get saved
It’s pretty easy to save everyone if you know how to fight Jason inside. I can reliably beat this game in less than 15 minutes with everyone saved (using only Mark and Crissy).
I have a video of myself doing that.
This game is incredibly underrated.
Nintendo: "NO CROSSES ON COFFINS!"
Also Nintendo: "Link's special pickup should be a cross, and it'll let him see ghosts!"
Don't forget the instruction manual having a cross on Link's shield.
“Suddenly you will turn around and find a torch, you will wanna take that.”
Yeah, as a kid, I could never defeat Jason, and I always wanted to save everyone, but I could never beat the game.
Aww man I been dying to see you do this game, I didn't even skip ads, I was looking for an excuse to have a couple of beers, thank you so much.
Download TH-cam Vanced. Google it. And replace your stock YT app with it. Zero ads! It also comes with YT Music!
Was super pumped to see the ad on TH-cam for the release of this today when I woke up this morning. Perfect way to kill some time at work!
Glad to see original gamers like you and AVGN do these videos! Good work!
I remember as a kid I got so frustrated with this game because I didn't know what to do. I didn't beat it until 2018 when I got the NES mini. The music and atmosphere of this game is so spooky. It brings me back to being a kid again. Thanks for the tutorial.
After seeing this guide, I think I finally see what's "wrong" with this game. It's always felt "off" and now that I've seen a true, thorough guide explaining it, I think I've finally figured it out. The IDEA of the game is you're supposed to pick up weapons, pass them to the other counselors (which gives them longer "staying power" against Jason) and protect the children. The problem is, he moves too fast to realistically do those things, and you end up having to fight the way UCBvG suggests here. If he moved at half the speed (or the game were over 6 days instead of 3) you might actually be able to do the things the game "suggests" you're supposed to do. It was ALMOST perfect for the license, just not QUITE there. I would argue the "perfect" horror game for it's license is probably Nightmare on Elm Street.
Yeah, this game forced the player to sacrifice children or other counselors in order to effectively beat the game. Trying to chase Jason down and stop all the cabin attacks would wear down all your lives, and that's the player's first instinct: you hear that alarm go off, you want to get to the cabin asap.
To be fair, it's very faithful to the movies as in the end there is only one or two characters left. I'd like to see if anybody has beat the game while saving all or most of the children.
@@alexgarcia2k I have done this.
But... I had to use save states. I'm not good at fighting him outside without saves. And the wolves get me all the time.
Yeah, thinking about it, I'm fairly sure this speed was intentional, that way it's impossible to save everyone, which, yes is very germane to the movies, and the genre. I still feel like if he was about 25% slower it would give you slightly more time to figure things out and react. I remember an old "How to Beat Video Games" guide by Jeff Rovin that suggested the strategy of passing knives to all the other counselors, then passing them machetes, then passing them vitamins, etc. I just don't think it's realistic, and the way UCBVG does it here is probably the only real way to win.
Don't ask me why this is such a guilty pleasure to me
One of the best Nes games of all time. I've been saying for years this is one of the first survival horror games. It takes strategy, and timing and once you figure out how to navigate the trails, cabins, and weapons It's a breeze and fun.
Not just beating video games. You sir are winning the internet.
I played the crap out of this game as a kid... I never could finish it though, but i remember almost killing jason, but he would come back full health
Yeah, this seemed impossible as a kid!
It was very fun. There was allways more to discover. I seem to remember getting a machete and then upgrading it by killing Jason's mother. I wanted to upgrade at least 3 characters weapons (George was useless though). It's too bad that the longer route didn't have a better payoff in game difficulty decrease.
remember as a kid, everyone said you needed the pitchfork to kill him. People would give 100 different locations where to find it and all of them were wrong. I discovered that you had to fight Jason's mom on day 3 as an adult to finally find it. So much easier these days with the internet to figure and find things out, back then it was base on word of mouth of hints from Nintendo Power.
@@matthewsantos8525 "Pitchfork is the ultimate weapon. You need it to beat Jason. Kill Jason's mom after getting a machette to get it" was the primary rumor. No-one around here could figure out the "lighting the cabin fires" (probably due to switching character and assuming they are still "lit"). So we were all stuck killing Jason's mom with " the best item you can get on that day" to get max loot from her. In the day of the internet, it wouldn't even be a slog.
This and Jaws are two of the best “unknown” games. I had both and played them all the time as a kid. Friday was a bit confusing at times, but I loved it and the music was creepy good. Jason still knows who I am to this day.
I've never played the game. And after watching this, I'm even more confused about all those weirdly specific sets of movements you apparently have to perform at the right time at the right place to get seemingly random items 🤔😄
You can light 4 fires in a specific order to get the torch as well. Take Mark do it give the torch to another character and repeat with Mark and relight them. You can arm everyone with the torch then
One of the 2 or 3 good LJN games. As a child that was actually allowed to watch the Friday the 13th movies at this time, the game was still scary tome and my young friends
Who Framed Roger Rabbit is one of the most frustrating and cryptic games on the NES, would love to see a deep dive on that.
The classic underwhelming NES ending to an impossible game.
Always HATED how some of the toughest games had the STUPIDEST endings; most which consisted of merely flying away in a helicopter or ship as the enemy fortress explodes, then going to credits. I always saw that as lazy.
Yeah this ending is way underthetop.
LOL they "aren't telling" if Jason is coming back. Thats just rude! lol they must want everybody to die!
This game gave me nightmares due to how difficult and confusing it was. 20 odd years later I NOW LEARN that jason HAS A PATTERN?!
