    Actors got enough fame for what they do, i wish also people behind CGI got the fame they deserve, cause this is amazing and they are the main part of this art called cinema.

    This has got my blood pumping. I'm doing vfx at Uni at 39 yrs old and love it. I think its a magnificent art form. Just as much work goes into vfx as it would filming non cgi. It just saves a lot of money having people do it in a virtual space rather than lugging equipment everywhere. This talent blows my mind and I hope I'm as good as this when I've finished.

    One thing I liked was that when the space station was ripped to shreds it was silent, as it would be in real life (since sound can't travel through space). They really tried to get the science behind this movie right.

    Remarkable. This really is at the bleeding edge of CG and simulation. Stunning work, and made an impossible to create film possible. Work of genius on all fronts! I never thought the interior shots aboard space stations were all completely CG backgrounds (that's what I got from this. They look truly real, especially even more so in 3D. Wow. Several Oscars, both technical and most of all artistic need to be handed to this film at the Oscars.

I went to the theater expecting gimmicky visuals to compensate for the lack of writing but it was the opposite way around! THE VISUALS SUPPORTED THE GREAT STORYTELLING!!! who would have though that was possible in todays blockbusters!

    The fact that Framestore utilized a whitescreen, rather than a green or a blue, is very intuitive. I can only assume that this was a major contributing factor to the sense of depth and weightlessness felt in the film. For one to understand exactly why a whitescreen however, one must remember that all things that vanish out towards a horizon (or "nothingness," in this case) will become lighter and less defined. So from what I have observed, the whitescreen acted as tool for depth and space (no pun intended). It wasn't just for character removal.

    • @DigiMyst
      @DigiMyst 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Did it convince you when you watched the film? If you didn't know the difference between reality and fiction, then I'd say they did an excellent job. The actors did much more than simply provide their faces, you know. Cuàron excels at one-shot scenes, and the actors had to endure rigorous physical training to meet the demands of the film. That's film-making at its finest.

    • @TheReal7Bit
      @TheReal7Bit 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      JustifiedMayhem32 But it doesn't allow suspension of disbelief at all. When I'm in the theatre watching a Life of Pi, Avatar or Gravity I can not immerse myself even in the slightest bit. Just knowing that 99% was shot in front of a greenscreen or made completely with vfx pulls me out.

    • @TheReal7Bit
      @TheReal7Bit 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr. Tulip ...which is horrible. There is nothing more disappointing about a movie than a disconnection from it when you're watching it.

    • @DigiMyst
      @DigiMyst 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Mr. Tulip
      Well, the simple solution to all that really is to not watch the VFX breakdowns. It'd be like magician telling you how he performs his magic trick; the illusion is foiled. It seems like you're actively looking for how these movies are made, but why bother if you'll just turn around and wish for the old days of cinema? Obviously they couldn't have made this movie without CG, but you have to admire their effort to make it as convincing as possible. CG has come a long way.

    • @PaddyOBrien1971
      @PaddyOBrien1971 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr. Tulip The difference with Life of Pi and Avatar is that you know damn well that vfx had to be employed to play out the scenes! Gravity isn't science fiction.....it's science fact. What happened up there could, in theory, happen up there today! As has already been alluded to.....when you CAN'T tell where the CG kicks in.....then booyarr, Framestore pulled it off! I've been a fan of movies and behind the scenes vfx since I was knee high to a Jawa, and even I struggled to see where the reality met CG. A truly astonishing movie. :-)

      I'm not sure what they used, but here is a quote/webpage about it.
      "As the simulation couldn’t be split, it had to be done on one machine and as a result it was taking up to 24 hours. “When you press the ‘sim’ button on the farm it was like launching something into space! We had to come up with some ideas to get around it.” As with the destruction of the ISS a low resolution simulation was required to mock up the movement more quickly. The parachute dynamic setup was split into six dynamic parts, with each having its own material property: rigid metal, thick ropes, thin ribbons, silk canopy for example. “It was definitely one of the biggest challenges” says Sylvain."

      10 years might be a little generous, you know to render these final CGI scenes the data is sent to a room with HUNDREDS of connected computers, which even then don't process the images in real time? Video games will get better, but it's far from movie CGI quality,

    • @oscarsalas96
      @oscarsalas96 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ignore a little the prev. comment. This is a process of compositing (mixing real footage with 3D). Professionals use a software called The foundry NUKE. Also you could use others for more basic things, as After effects.

    • @TheShifters99
      @TheShifters99 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EgAnimatiOn You can do some things with C4D for sure. However at the level you are seeing here you would have to turn to solutions such as Maya for 3D and NUKE for compositing as mentioned by Oscar. However like I previously said, whilst VFX houses do utilize some these packages they often use there own proprietary software. Check out ILM's YT if you want to learn more.
      .

    • @oscarsalas96
      @oscarsalas96 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For 3D maya and C4D could work... but NUKE is enssential for compositing.... is the most professional tool for that and if you search a little around the internet you could find how this software was executed in most of the scenes. Remember, 3D modeling and compositing are different things... Maya is also essential, but not to "mix" real footage with 3D.
