I flood the spark plug well (old plug installed but plug wire pulled) with cheap toluene carb cleaner (no other spray is better except electronics cleaner but many cost much more because brand names and it's cheap by the case at Walmart etc). I then hit the area around the well because a full well floats away crud. I give it ten minutes then use a long reach rubber tipped (= most versatile) blow gun to blow out the well and adjacent area. I keep various pieces of stainless tubing and hose to get more reach than a stock blowgun too. Then I grab the boot with with my two-foot long forceps (they reach better than needle nose, I suggest getting all the forceps of different styles ya can score) which reaches rear Ford engine bay areas nicely, toss a rag beneath the flush out the plug boot to remove any oil or coolant residue. Most of the time I don't even need to replace the spark plug.
My F150s (1997 & 2000 plus a spare of each year) should outlive me easily.

It's the dirty connection where the spring attaches to the coil. If you have anymore problems with misfire you can clean the coil spade where the spring attaches with contact cleaner. You can also buy new springs and rubber boots. I got this valuable tip from 3V Johnny How to rebuild your coil on plugs. It works like a charm and is easy on the wallet.

I have a 1999 ford f 150 with a 4.6 Engine, , I always set my plugs .35 , 2 months ago I went ahead and set them at .54 like they say , Now I get 20 miles to the gallon on the Interstate , and 12 miles to the gallon around town , I used to get 25 and 26 on the interstate and 15 around town , Now i'm going to pull them all out and reset the Plugs at .35 So I can get my fuel mileage back
