My 97 f150 has over 262k miles I bought it brand new I’ve owned it for 23 years the only thing that I have replaced in it was the ac compressor and that was at around 250k miles. It has never failed me always do all the maintenance myself I have no doubt that it will make it to 300k miles.

This is an awesome video. You covered everything the old school way by tracing paths and process of elimination. This is how people should START learning about cars. Not with computers. Great video. I would like to maybe see more examples showing you doing the process while talking. But everyones a critic. Its your video and it was great.
They have been giving the century series F-150 a hard time on You tube , one thing you need to remember these trucks are 24 years old and there are still plenty of these trucks around I know I bought mine new in 97 and I still have it and it still runs and looks good. Yes I had one of them Beasts great trucks. It had a issue of the spark plugs popping out of motor hence why people was scared to change the plugs. One more thing put a new timing chain kit in it. It will double the power and gas mileage...
The Green Bastard reminds me of my 2008 F350. I picked it up this summer. $800. Body is beat, but engine and everything else runs mint. It was an ex railway company truck so they bashed it into tree's, etc. Have had 0 issues with it. Haven't even changed the oil yet.
@@StrangeGarage The 5.3L naturally aspirated V8 I believe. Has a great amount of torque and good gear shifts for a gas engine. I've overloaded the bed with it already and couldn't even feel it. I have a Diesel already, so didn't want another one. More of a PITA. Especially the 6.4's. The Railway Companies mechanics kept everything mechanically in top shape. Time down on the truck is a waste of money for the company. They didn't seem to care too much about the body though 😂😂
I've had the same issue and now that I resolved the intake leak and all the vacuum leaks I'll have to replace the new spark plugs that I'm sure are junk now since I drove it for a while before I fixed the main issues so here's hoping that once I throw new plugs in it I'll be done
I bought a terrible rusted up shot to hell inside and out 98 f150 for 250$, me and a few buddies got it running (not great) and it spits some flames here and there 😌
I got a 97 f250 with the same body style when I was driving it home the flowmaster muffler exploded and I drove it 80 miles home with no baffles in the muffler
I have a 2003 Mustang GT with the same 4.6 engine. When I first got it it also had exploded mufflers. I think it’s a common problem with the 4.6 because my dad had a 96 GT 4,6 with exploded mufflers as well. I put in flowmasters super 44s and haven’t had a problem since.
Oh my god this is gonna help soo much I really hate this truck I have a 97 f150 with the 5.4 and bank 1 is running lean this should help me figure it out I have replaced the entire fuel system all new gaskets So now I’ll check the injectors, coils , sparkplug wires and even know I have brand new spark plugs I’ll check em to see if they went bad
Thanks man, you rock. I have 2000 Ford F-150 V8 5.4 liter. When the truck is ran for longer than 30 minutes while only pulling our camping trailer, it’s starts to lose power and doesn’t idle right. After waiting fire around 30 minutes or fine for a bit. Could this be the mass air sensor? Thanks

I’ve did 1-6 spark plugs and coils on mine but turns out 7 and 8 are stripped at coil pack and I don’t know what to do guess I’ll try and find a 7mm extract socket
hey, so i sorta recently started getting into mechanic learning the past year n a bit. i was fixing everything on my chevy but i have the f150 now and same idle problem. i was trying to find a leak using soap spray bubble test wed use years back at a tire shop job and i got lazy n started spraying wild. when i sprayed towards the altenator from the angle of the passenger headlight it started to rev higher but idle better. im notmsure where it.got.sucked in but coulda have been the clucth fan redirecting it or i hit a hose leak maybe? anyone with insight?
This is the EXACT same truck I have. Same Year, engine, color, and everything. I'm having the same problem. I already replaced my coil packs and it's doing better but not quite great yet. I'm truly hoping my issue is only sparkplugs as well

Have a question. Have a 1997 F 150 4.6 v8. On hot days truck will not restart when turned off. Makes a faint clicking sound. Usually has to cool down before it will start. Have waited 90 minutes. On cool days I have no problems, just when it's hot outside. Any ideas?
I'm leaning to starter related issues. Most likely a solenoid. Heat causes the solenoid coil resistance go up, reducing the power of the coil. Should be cheap and easy to find out.
Maybe you can help me I have a 98 f150 4x4 with a 5.4 I've had it a couple years but when I first bought it it would run real smooth for a little bit and then all of a sudden it would lose power and shake the whole truck and then it would clear up and run good again and it did this for a long time and I had four oxygen sensors put in that I had bought offline real cheap all four for the price of one at a parts store but yes yesterday this is May 2022 I went to Huntsville and it was raining and it barely would go it was shaking the whole truck and I get crappy gas mileage anyway and now gas prices is over $4 a gallon it makes it rough on some people it didn't start clearing up and I had it checked in my o 2 aresensors or bad but diagnostic says that my number 7 coil pack is bad I have a wiring problem also I have no dashboard lights so I don't know if my check engine light is on or not I'm on a very limited income and trying to find the cheapest way I can go that's why I'm about the sensors off of eBay but that didn't seem to do the trick any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated have a happy and safe memorial weekend 2022
SG, good to see you back at creating entertaining content. You have infinitely more knowledge than I do when I comes to engines. I would not have had the know how to do any of the testing you did. I would have started with the spark plugs and not because I was certain that was the issue, rather lack of knowledge on the other things that could be wrong. Have you been working on anything cool with your new CNC?
Hey Ted, glad you have so patient with my content! Just been making my usual signs with the CNC. Nothing I would call "exciting". I wouldn't call myself an expert, I just like learning new things. That, and I buy everything broken, I get to exercise that part of my brain quite often! Hoping to have a video up by mid next week, it's a resurrection of a 1982 XL500. Should be a good one.
I really like your approach to gaining knowledge. Look forward to the 1982 XL500 resurrection video. My 2011 Mazda Tribute has 130K miles on it and you have me thinking it's time to change my spark plugs. It starts and runs great but it's likely only a matter of a short time and it will need new plugs. What you do with cars, boats and motorcycles, I do with houses (rehabbing investment properties and my home & commercial repair/renovation business).
Same kind of deal. There's so many things to learn in houses too, and every project is a little different than the last. You do it long enough you become a pro. This latest bike was MUCH different than my last few bikes, and it was frustrating at times, but now I have an extra tool in the pouch, and it's just gonna keep growing. Cars have been my thing for a while, but old hondas are turning into my thing lately. It only takes a little neglect, and if you don't know what you're doing you need a guy like me to pick up the pieces! It's an actual money making opportunity that I am starting to consider. Trouble is, I gotta start selling my babies, lol.
In regards to the Mazda, I would look at the timing belt first. Those bad boys are my bread and butter, but some engines grenade the valves when the belt goes. So if you haven't done that already, do that first.
I am pretty sure my 2011 Tribute has a timing chain, not a timing belt. Based on some cursory research, chains don't fail as often a belts. What are your thoughts on this?
Mine boggles out under load Idk understand live reading I did one an posted it on my page I have two pertaining to my 99 triton v8 4.6 v8 I bought it cats cut an straight pipe into flow master . . And it backfires into intake and boggles out on acceleration / load . 2 or 3 videos
my 98 v6 f150xlt 2x4 is like bogging horribly over 2k rpm in neutral it will Rev up but when taking off or giving gas to go faster or especially up hills it gets bad what's your opinion?
Motorcraft is owned by ford.. so was fram and a few other parts manufacturers. They do t make the sparkplug that proudly slap their label on... or their filters... or their oil they sell as their own. Along with a long list of electronic components. Your paying extra for a name. Most of ford is manufactured in China and Mexico anymore. It's a global enterprise thing.
@@im-that-guy-pal Ford approved oem parts, who and where they're made doesn't really matter. If it says motorcraft it's a Ford approved part unless it's a China knockoff.
Mines doing the exact same thing, great rev ups but very shaky on drive and doesnt wanna pick up speed like mayor loss of power. Am about to replace coils, plugs and wires as shes been sitting for aminute.
I did eventually use blue devil in the coolant system, and the truck ran great after that. This leads me to believe my issue WAS a bad intake manifold gasket. It's not a bad idea for you to try blue devil too (if you have been losing coolant).
See, mine purrs like a kitten at idle and nice an tight free reving. As soon as i gass it on the road, it sputters an misses. Come to a stop, purrs like a kitten. New tune up didn't help. Been to 5 "five" shops and not one can figure it out. I've got over $600.⁰⁰ in diagnostic charges with no solution. No lights on dash, no codes in diagnostic. 4.6L 5 speed manual with factory locker rear end, 8' bed supercab 4x4.. I'm down to swapping engines as an option.
Sadly, I had this exact same situation. I ended up buying another broken F150, swapping the parts it needed from my other F150 and scrapping the junk one. It was a tough pill to swallow.
I have no clue what the hell is wrong with mine. I’ve got a 98 4.6, and it’s misfiring at idle and a little when I give her some gas. I’ve checked the plugs, coils, coil pack, maf, fuel pressure and everything in between. Funny thing is is that there is no check engine light.
I changed plugs, coils, fuel filter, cleaned the inside of throttle body and still idles and missing, sounds like it has a cam in it flooding, mine has individual coils. So now I dont have a clue
Well shit yours reved up mine dont... it just pops and back fires.... it used to say left bank run lean and i redone the intake gaskets and now its just saying left bank running lean.... i unplugged the up stream sensors and boom ran little bit better... for a little while... and now its running like shit again but still runs little better then it did before.
Fuel pressures good and holds steadily. Runs worse with the upstream sensors plugged in and runs better with out them plugged in but only for a little bit. I already redone filter and pump injectors plugs coils wires intake gasket maf sensor replaced all the vacuum lines- only code shows up is left bank running lean. Gets worse as it warms up come to think of it... not totally noticeable but does get worse. Anyway to bypass the upstream sensors?
@@SmudgyContent Did you get your o2 sensors mixed up? Some vehicles o2 sensors aren't the same upstream to downstream, and the engine will run like absolute trash if you put them in the wrong spot. I would also check resistance at the sensors to make sure they're working right. You don't have a big leak between your manifold and your MAF do ya? These trucks really can be a pain...

Like said driver side is beyond fked and only way is to maybe drill and thread chase a new hole leave the old on in where its at... kinda at a loss was searching on how i could bypass upstream sensors...
My 97 F150 was nicknamed "Dirty Dick" after I first bought it a friend coined the phrase do to one of the many bumper stickers on the tailgate one of which said "Dirty Dicks Crab House" :P For those of you with this same truck changing the plugs can be a pain, especially cylinder #4. Best way I found for #4 was to remove the fuse block then tie wrap it back along with the heater hoses then you can get one 6 inch extension on the plug with a ratchet. make sure you put anti seize on the threads of your new plugs and get them tightened to around 12 ft pounds.
Going through this with my ford ...changed plugs, coil over plugs , fuel filter, and she sputters and knocks a little if I put it in neutral while driving kill the engine and re start and put back in drive and she runs perfect until I slow back down ...then she will do it again....Idk what else to do
REALLY? You bought the truck cheap and you couldn't afford to take the time and $ 20 to do a little preventive maintenance like spark plugs and an air filter?
There is no such thing as "preventative maintenance" on a triton engine with 220k miles bro. This truck was on life support. Don't do anything you don't have to do. I know it might not make sense, but the condition of this truck was SO bad! I paid $650 for it, I worried about wasting money when I put $80 worth of gas in it. Just a set of plug wires is $90. A vehicle worth the money I wouldn't think twice about doing preventative maintenance. This truck was not worth the money.
@@StrangeGarage OK, OK, I give up. I got to your video because I was looking at a '97 F150 on my local Craig's List and was wondering how hard they were to work on. But, between your comments and the "exploding" spark plugs and other issues, I'm thinking I will pass on F150's in that era. That exploding spark plugs really got my attention. In another video the guy describes how there are only a few threads holding the spark plug in place and the torque spec by Ford isn't high enough to keep the plug seated. So, over time and vibration, the plug unscrews those two or three threads holding it in place until it "explodes" out completely. Ford engineers - top of the line. No wonder so many folks are buying foreign. Funny how the tables turn. A couple decades ago, the foreign vehicles were the cheap junk. Now we have seen the enemy and it is US.
@@STBRetired1 The 4.6 doesn't blow plugs like the 5.4 does. These mostly have manifold problems. The engines are ok, but anything 2003 and up stay away!!!

@@avitia38super 2000 expedition 4.6, 367,800 I currently have a smooth idle but issues on acceleration. Running it as my daily right now and she don't get out of her own way. If i stomp on it, shuts down. Done the leak check, replaced every part of the EGR system, swapped a transmission and torque converter, swapped an entire exhaust system, changed the camshaft position sensor, TPS, MAF, plugs were done with new coil packs when my dad was driving it, and a new fuel filter. I have a fuel pump to put in thinking it's possible the pump has enough psi to start the truck but not enough to supply the overall demand for full throttle.
I got the expedition back to normal. 3 spark plugs backed out enough to mess up air mixture and compression. Fixed all that and running great. Crazy what little things can mess up combustion.

my 99 f150 has 306,000 miles, i haven’t seen anybody that talks bad on ford with those miles

Mine semistalls to below 500rpm if I go into gear at idle. 2002 4.2 V6 herk jerks on decel, accelerates well, cruises fine.
Same, cut the exhaust off it sounds like it’s cammed

Those plugs, other than being toast, LOL, looked like the engine was burning amazingly clean, with, did you say, 225K miles, that's amazing!

Off. It's just indicitive of potential amperage draw. Anything outside of normal range tells you that something is up.
so if its not the plugs, coil packs, or injectors, or intake manifold then what?
Because @goodloe tv had the same problem because of the catylic converters

Same kind of deal. There's so many things to learn in houses too, and every project is a little different than the last. You do it long enough you become a pro. This latest bike was MUCH different than my last few bikes, and it was frustrating at times, but now I have an extra tool in the pouch, and it's just gonna keep growing.
Cars have been my thing for a while, but old hondas are turning into my thing lately. It only takes a little neglect, and if you don't know what you're doing you need a guy like me to pick up the pieces! It's an actual money making opportunity that I am starting to consider. Trouble is, I gotta start selling my babies, lol.
In regards to the Mazda, I would look at the timing belt first. Those bad boys are my bread and butter, but some engines grenade the valves when the belt goes. So if you haven't done that already, do that first.
I am pretty sure my 2011 Tribute has a timing chain, not a timing belt. Based on some cursory research, chains don't fail as often a belts. What are your thoughts on this?

my 98 v6 f150xlt 2x4 is like bogging horribly over 2k rpm in neutral it will Rev up but when taking off or giving gas to go faster or especially up hills it gets bad what's your opinion?

You should consider changing out the plug wires also, use motorcraft only. Those coils only like motorcraft wires... it's a Ford thing.
Motorcraft is owned by ford.. so was fram and a few other parts manufacturers. They do t make the sparkplug that proudly slap their label on... or their filters... or their oil they sell as their own. Along with a long list of electronic components. Your paying extra for a name. Most of ford is manufactured in China and Mexico anymore. It's a global enterprise thing.
@@im-that-guy-pal Ford approved oem parts, who and where they're made doesn't really matter. If it says motorcraft it's a Ford approved part unless it's a China knockoff.
Mines doing the exact same thing, great rev ups but very shaky on drive and doesnt wanna pick up speed like mayor loss of power. Am about to replace coils, plugs and wires as shes been sitting for aminute.
I did eventually use blue devil in the coolant system, and the truck ran great after that. This leads me to believe my issue WAS a bad intake manifold gasket. It's not a bad idea for you to try blue devil too (if you have been losing coolant).

Motorcraft most likely. Parts stores love to sell expensive plugs, but Ford recommends motorcraft.

I would assume you can, but youre supposed to use autolite I think. They even say "ford" on the plug.

See, mine purrs like a kitten at idle and nice an tight free reving. As soon as i gass it on the road, it sputters an misses. Come to a stop, purrs like a kitten. New tune up didn't help. Been to 5 "five" shops and not one can figure it out. I've got over $600.⁰⁰ in diagnostic charges with no solution.
No lights on dash, no codes in diagnostic.
4.6L 5 speed manual with factory locker rear end, 8' bed supercab 4x4..
I'm down to swapping engines as an option.
Sadly, I had this exact same situation. I ended up buying another broken F150, swapping the parts it needed from my other F150 and scrapping the junk one. It was a tough pill to swallow.

Whenever you replace your spark plugs BE CAREFUL you will cross thread like I did. Had to put a helicoil on it be careful.
Also use torque wrench ang tighten to 20 ft lbs instead of 13 so they will not loosen and blow out!
Motor had to be really hard to start with those plugs. Should have been your first clue.
Started great actually. It would backfire at low RPM, that was about it. That's part of why I was surprised.

I have no clue what the hell is wrong with mine. I’ve got a 98 4.6, and it’s misfiring at idle and a little when I give her some gas. I’ve checked the plugs, coils, coil pack, maf, fuel pressure and everything in between. Funny thing is is that there is no check engine light.
I have the exact same quirk with my 5.4. I’d just wait until the light comes on to fix it, a little misfire at idle isn’t really a huge deal

Well shit yours reved up mine dont... it just pops and back fires.... it used to say left bank run lean and i redone the intake gaskets and now its just saying left bank running lean.... i unplugged the up stream sensors and boom ran little bit better... for a little while... and now its running like shit again but still runs little better then it did before.

Fuel pressures good and holds steadily. Runs worse with the upstream sensors plugged in and runs better with out them plugged in but only for a little bit. I already redone filter and pump injectors plugs coils wires intake gasket maf sensor replaced all the vacuum lines- only code shows up is left bank running lean. Gets worse as it warms up come to think of it... not totally noticeable but does get worse. Anyway to bypass the upstream sensors?
@@SmudgyContent Did you get your o2 sensors mixed up? Some vehicles o2 sensors aren't the same upstream to downstream, and the engine will run like absolute trash if you put them in the wrong spot. I would also check resistance at the sensors to make sure they're working right. You don't have a big leak between your manifold and your MAF do ya? These trucks really can be a pain...

Like said driver side is beyond fked and only way is to maybe drill and thread chase a new hole leave the old on in where its at... kinda at a loss was searching on how i could bypass upstream sensors...
My 97 F150 was nicknamed "Dirty Dick" after I first bought it a friend coined the phrase do to one of the many bumper stickers on the tailgate one of which said "Dirty Dicks Crab House" :P For those of you with this same truck changing the plugs can be a pain, especially cylinder #4. Best way I found for #4 was to remove the fuse block then tie wrap it back along with the heater hoses then you can get one 6 inch extension on the plug with a ratchet. make sure you put anti seize on the threads of your new plugs and get them tightened to around 12 ft pounds.

Going through this with my ford ...changed plugs, coil over plugs , fuel filter, and she sputters and knocks a little if I put it in neutral while driving kill the engine and re start and put back in drive and she runs perfect until I slow back down ...then she will do it again....Idk what else to do

Could totally be your IAC, air line, cold air intake or connection or even your throttle body

REALLY? You bought the truck cheap and you couldn't afford to take the time and $ 20 to do a little preventive maintenance like spark plugs and an air filter?
There is no such thing as "preventative maintenance" on a triton engine with 220k miles bro. This truck was on life support. Don't do anything you don't have to do. I know it might not make sense, but the condition of this truck was SO bad! I paid $650 for it, I worried about wasting money when I put $80 worth of gas in it. Just a set of plug wires is $90. A vehicle worth the money I wouldn't think twice about doing preventative maintenance. This truck was not worth the money.
Did I mention I bought the truck from a tweaker? It was really, really bad.
@@StrangeGarage OK, OK, I give up. I got to your video because I was looking at a '97 F150 on my local Craig's List and was wondering how hard they were to work on. But, between your comments and the "exploding" spark plugs and other issues, I'm thinking I will pass on F150's in that era. That exploding spark plugs really got my attention. In another video the guy describes how there are only a few threads holding the spark plug in place and the torque spec by Ford isn't high enough to keep the plug seated. So, over time and vibration, the plug unscrews those two or three threads holding it in place until it "explodes" out completely. Ford engineers - top of the line. No wonder so many folks are buying foreign. Funny how the tables turn. A couple decades ago, the foreign vehicles were the cheap junk. Now we have seen the enemy and it is US.
@@STBRetired1 The 4.6 doesn't blow plugs like the 5.4 does. These mostly have manifold problems. The engines are ok, but anything 2003 and up stay away!!!

Shit my 97 f150 with a 4.6 motor has over 262,000 miles. The only thing that I have replaced in it was the ac pump. I bought the pickup brand new I owned it for 23 years. It’s never let me down i certain it will make it to 300k miles with out a problem so yeah it’s a ford what do you expect. 👍✌️
@@avitia38super 2000 expedition 4.6, 367,800 I currently have a smooth idle but issues on acceleration. Running it as my daily right now and she don't get out of her own way. If i stomp on it, shuts down. Done the leak check, replaced every part of the EGR system, swapped a transmission and torque converter, swapped an entire exhaust system, changed the camshaft position sensor, TPS, MAF, plugs were done with new coil packs when my dad was driving it, and a new fuel filter. I have a fuel pump to put in thinking it's possible the pump has enough psi to start the truck but not enough to supply the overall demand for full throttle.
I got the expedition back to normal. 3 spark plugs backed out enough to mess up air mixture and compression. Fixed all that and running great. Crazy what little things can mess up combustion.
