I'm getting this exact issue but I replaced all the plugs with Autolite platinum, and got brand new Motorcraft coils. I got a 10-pack of the coils for a half-decent price and have tried 3 different coils on cylinder 2. That's the one that's misfiring. And 2 different new spark plugs. I took it to the shop. They had the thing for 4 days and couldn't find the issue. They tried swapping coils, plugs, and even the fuel injectors. Nothing. Still a misfire on 2. Compression test was good as well. I can't figure it.
You may have some sort of freak thing going on. Forward tech maculoco had a video where there was actually melting in the intake manifold causing a misfire. Never know what it can be. I'd be interested in inspecting the harness for the coil pack on that cylinder. You could potentially have a bad connector and it is not fully contacting the top of the coil. For that not to move there's either something else going on or there could be a wiring issue there... It's worth checking.
I would just inspect the connector on your harness to ensure that it's seating properly. Those are the simple things to check because if it's not moving around, then there's something going on with that particular cylinder. But like I said, there are all sorts of issues that it could be it's just best to start with the easiest things first. Good luck
@@3VJohnny Oh, one more symptom. It seems to run a bit better when it's cold, but then gets worse once it warms up. Does that sound like an expansion problem with an electrical contact somewhere?
My 2004 F150 was having this exact issue and I couldn’t find anyone thread or forum where people had the same issue. All people talked about was replacing spark plugs or the fuel injectors, so I’m glad I found this video! The problem went away and the truck drives that much better now. Thanks for the help!
I was ready to purchase a set of coils to the tune of 329.00 for my 2006 F150 for this SAME ISSUE after I was told it was the coils. I had already purchased 8 plugs to change, and then the night before I was to do this plug change I came upon your video. I went back to OReilly's the next day and asked for a refund for the plugs (8@14.99 each), and used the refund to purchase the coil on plugs kit...40.00. Since I still had 80.00 left from my refund I purchsed a can or Electronics Cleaner, a can of Intake and Carb cleaner and a can of Seafoam and still had 50.00 left over from my refund. Truck finally runs like it should. Excellent video, my friend. Thank you for this information.
I am so glad to hear that! It is certainly worth doing for routine maintenance and while it doesn't necessarily solve every instance of this misfire, it is certainly worth the shot especially if the boots are original. Glad to hear you saved some money 👍👍

I did this to my 2008 fx2 5.4 Ford F-150 and the sputtering in overdrive going around 45-50mph went away I was dealing with that issue for alone time now I changed the coil packs the spark plugs still same thing you guys just need to take them apart put some dielectric grease and install it all back how it was and your problem was gone! Mate, you've saved me a heap of cash and for that, I thank you very much. My mechanic, whom I'll never go to again was insisting that it was big bucks to fix, he wanted to replace my torgue converter, fuel pump and possibly my transmission aswell. The truck runs like new again.
As long as it actually fixed the problem that's a great thing. It's not always the cause and can absolutely be a torque converter and other issues. But this is always the easiest thing to check
This is so true. My 11 Expy 5.4L was bucking like 3 yrs ag and no engine light (now at 157k miles and still no engine light). 2 local ahole shops I called "yeah bring it in and we'll replace the engine as it's the timing chains. Chains are slapping around causing misfires"... The blog I found back then was to change the coils as they get old and crack. I got Holley Accels then and sure enough, the bucking CEASED!!! I hadn't realized the Ford coils were likely good as just boots and springs and tossed them out after moving them around 1/2 doz times in the garage :( Now 3 yrs later and my Expy started bucking again. This AM I pulled off the coils and lubed up the springs and also noted they didn't extend out so pulled them out a little to ensure they contact the plug. The bucking is GONZO AGAIN!!!! Tools required are my Ryobi 1/4" impact driver, 7mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and small extensions for the rear coils. 1/2 hr. Plugs are only 3 yrs old with
I'm so happy I found your video, this not only fixed my 06 Ford F-150 with the 5.4, but also saved me a bunch of money for repair, it's amazing the amount of mechanics/shops that are unaware of this issue with the misfires and had told me it was bad fuel, torque converter, spark plugs, and then replacing the entire coil packs. After watching this video realizing my truck was acting exactly as described. I took it upon myself and purchased 8 coil boots and springs from Advanced Auto and 2 hours time and my truck runs perfect again. Awesome I'm so glad! Since you did both it's very possible it was a combination of those but a tune-up is always one of the first things to do. I'd also clean your mass air flow sensor and your throttle body if you haven't already.
Nope it almost is never on. That's why I made the video. People scratch their heads on this and sometimes you can have different causes without having an engine light.

Holy s*** dude. Thank you so much. This has been driving me nuts for about a year and i just assumed it was a vacuum leak that would cost more to fix than what my 260k mile Explorer was worth... I searched forever but found this video by chance and now i can finally feel the sweet relief of driving at 40mph with no terrifying misfiring.
I have a 06 exp. I've had this issue twice now. Tune up, new plugs but I knew it could be coil related . I put fuel inj cleaner and it does help but it has never 100% fixed the issue. Ford makes really good vehicles but some of the problems they have with their cars are so ridiculous and one of those problems is the design with these injectors. I drove almost for a whole year with my car bogging like you said. That was like four years ago. Then I changed one of the coils and gave it a tune-up and it fix the problem. But now it's back again. It also happened one other time in like a year ago. I'm going to try to do what you recommend. I have been told by a couple mechanics that if you have these Ford engines with these coils that you should use fuel injector cleaner at least like once every couple months and it can prevent the problem. But I think if you don't use the cleaner religiously you will always have this problem return
I run that every few months as well in my vehicles as well as only run top tier gas. It's so funny because you'll have people that never have an issue. But then there are ones that have these ghost misfires every so often. Hope that takes care of it, but like anything, it can be something else
Mine does it at 60 mph almost Every time. I wonder if the speed of the malfunction has anything to do with what coil/bank is malfunctioning? Like if it bogs at 60mph it might be let's say plug#8 and if it bogs at 45mph it may be plug#2. That would be interesting.
I just had my transmission rebuilt because of bad forward clutches. It shifted fine for a few weeks and developed the dreaded 45-50 mph OD to 3rd shudder which would stop when I let off the throttle. I took it back to the tranny shop and was able to demonstrate the problem but he had no clue what it was. I think he thought it was his work and I get the feeling he did not want to open up the transmission again. Anyways, glad I didn't go nuts and take it to another transmission shop. Dirty coil looks like the answer. It happens when the engine is hot and is more prevalent on hot days so heat is a factor. Since heat affects resistance, it makes sense that heat would cause dirty contact to misfire. I'll report back with my results. Thanks for the video tip.
Got the hearted comment, edited a small error out, and lost the hearted comment. Did not know that was how YT worked. Anyways, my belated report as promised. I found four problems. One coil with corrosion and loose contact which fell out when slinky was removed. One coil with green crust. One very worn spark plug, replaced. One spark plug well that was foiled with debris. Debris was caked in and had to be chipped out and softened with brake cleaner. Debris was heat soaking plug which caused mis-fire. Just finished a couple of days ago and have not had a shudder. Been trying to trigger shudder but seems to be gone now. More miles and time will tell. Anyways, that was an ace suggestion.
Awesome sounds like you found quite a few little issues that were flying under the radar. It really goes to show you how effective it can be to clean them and not be spending upwards of $300-500 for an entire new set. Nice work!
@@3VJohnny True. What bugs me is there were mis-fires under high load which did not set CEL. Had I gotten P0308 or one of the other mis-fire codes, I would have been on it a lot earlier. The other thing that bugs me is how easy it is to misdiagnose ignition problem as something far worse and far more expensive. A dishonest mechanic would have a field day with this.
I believe the shutter u feel is converter lock up trying but misfire is causing it to have way less torque which is what ur ecm reads to match speed and torque to tell the converter to lock up. That’s what ur feeling.

Absolutely! I hope that helps. If all checks well with the coils, and you still have the issue, spark plugs are a likely culprit. Could also be a dirty fuel filter if it's clogged. A lot of people change spark plugs, and ignore the coil on plugs, and end up chasing other issues. Definitely report back!

Exactly my symptoms. Cylinder 5 code misfire was going to shell out 70 for one coil pack I don't think my auto dealer will have just the springs and boot. Thank you ❤ been going on a while now I can even hear the ticking of the unburned gas in my exhaust at idle as it is misfiring
Coil pack 5 fixed 5 now 6 is complaining but performance is better a lot better. The shudder amd exhaust tapping gone. Acceleration is good no problem so 6 can wait until next month
Thank you. BUT I have an 03 that used to be a DOT truck. It can also run on propane. You guessed it the coil I think is having this problem is the one under the propane system. Took me about 72 hours to change just the plugs. Wish I seen your video first and change the boots too.
I'm experiencing the exact thing in a 2008 Expedition I just purchased earlier this week. I'm getting the parts together now for a full ignition refresh on the 5.4L and hopefully this fixes the problem.
My 2003 F150 5.4 V8 Triton does this but I have 189,000 miles on it. I don't mind replacing the coils and the pigtails because it's been a good and reliable truck: not even valve noise from the engine.
I'm having the same issue in my 05 Ford f150 AND my 2012 Ford flex(only difference is that mine can do it in-between 40-55mph). I'm praying this is what's going on. It's crazy that it's happening in both of my vehicles. My 07 Sport Trac with a 4.6 3v has been doing exactly this! No stored or pending pcm dtc either. I was worried it was the torque converter. Im going to try thiis and report back.
My truck sucks. Had a coil go bad. Misfire which caused engine shaking esp about 50mph. I was thinking several things were bad simply bc the issues were so bad. But a simple coil replacement fixed all that. Wow
Exactly! It doesn't mean it's always the case as you know, but far too often people think it's transmission or u-joint issue because of how severe the misfires can be. It's always worth checking these first especially if you rebuild them because it's so cheap. It's worth cleaning them when you do your spark plug change intervals.
2004 lincoln town car 60k, put new coils in it and plugs, new fuel filter, new injectors, watched your video grabbed my old coils rebuilt them like you said....still misfires with no engine light around 35-55. It idles like a dream, it burns rubber and accelerates like a dream. Transmission has been flushed, what should i do now. Every shop says get a new car but no. Head gask and block is perfect. Compression perfect.
Hi good video. It makes sense. I had misfired on my Navigator 05. I changed spark plugs on cylinder 1-4,but still misfired but don;t show light while on overdrive speed 30 to 45 on free way after high speed to slow down. I will check on cylinder 5 -8 and clean coils too. Thanks for the good idea.
I'm having the same issue, I changed the throttle body new spark plugs new coil packs, And it still shutters at low speed, transmission was just replaced 2 weeks ago so it's shifting smooth, now I'm guessing if it's not a fuel injector maybe it's a torque converter

This has been happening to my 2007 f150 5.4. Today I punched it in od on Highway and was really bucking bad but doesn’t happen in slow speeds. I thought it might be water in tank. Not throwing any code’s however the engine light started flashing and got off highway and light never came back on. Hoping it’s coil packs

I am chasing P0442 small evap leak for over a year now. Could this leak have anything to do with vacuum from brake booster hose? I’ve replaced canister purge and as well as keep my fuel inlet clean with the funnel every fill up. 5.4 3v with 150k…I’ve had this going for over a year now. My pleasure, thanks for watching! I'm not totally sure to be honest. I would check any hoses related to the EVAP system. Your engine is a bit different than my '04. Not sure if you have the same hoses that connect to the EVAP purge solenoid under the hood. On mine, it's near the brake booster and tends to dry rot. It's worth checking as that could certainly cause leaks.
Absolutely, this is not a one size-fits-all fix. Misfires can be caused by so many different variables. You can't diagnose it through the internet. It's just something easy to check because it's often neglected and people spend hundreds of dollars replacing coils. Spark plugs and coils are usually worth changing/cleaning...in addition to cleaning the throttle body & mass air flow sensor. But you can have misfires caused by a wide range of items.
01', 170k. Resealed rear end, coils, plugs, intake manifold, fuel filter, temp sensor, thermostat, still shudders. Drained trans fluid and putting new filter in. We will see🤷🏼♂️Sat for 2 yrs before I put her back on the road.
I have 2013 ford transit connect and I replaced the plugs and coils and fuel injectors and throttle body and maf and air filter.. Still does this around 50-60mph
Thank you for a delailed video. My 05 150 has those exact symptoms. I've been told that the bolts that hold down the coil packs, occasionally break. Can I lightly soak them with something such as WD40, before removing, to avoid the bolts busting off? I know the plugs on the 5.4, break, and I won't even attempt to pull those out, but to just put new could springs look like the easy fix
Great video! Much appreciate the advise, I will try this. I watched another video and this gentleman said the same thing. Another claimed to be the torque converter and recommended Genuine Ford XL3 friction modifier additive. I used something similiar for the rear diff as it was making vibrations during turns It helped with the limited slip and fixed the problem btw. For this however I will order a set of springs for all 8 coils. Normally when I think of coil misfire I normally think rough Idle but the way you exolained it makes perfect sense. I have the exact explained misfire and issues at the bottom of the gear befor shifting. I had ford do my plugs and then they were fine and now it's happening again. So annoying on a triton 😅
NEED HELP: I have a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer V8 is was running great. However, it starting a little jerk every blue moon when I would hit the gas while drive but it was sporadic. It still drove great with acceleration. At red lights, if idle too long it would sound like it was loosing power & shake a little. I would hit the gas pedal but it would take the gas 2 seconds slower than usual. Yday, it died at the red light but started right back up. Took it to O'Reilly this morning to check the codes. It gave primary DTC Fuel System Too Lean (Cylinder Bank 1). P0171 crankcase breather house and PCV valve. We replaced the PCV valve but it runs worse and won't stay crank. Please help me.
I have a 2007 F150, it revs very well on park but when in Drive, it doesn't go above 2000rpm and stays between 45 and 50 mph. Then the engine starts making a shooting sound. It looks like the transmission is not turning with the engine speed. What do you think about this?

Bud I'm about to pull my hair our with one I just bought doing exactly exactly the same thing . It sit for 5years. I've had the fuel tank off so many times I can do it with a rock and a stick. I don't know what I'm doing . I've used seafoam x3 heat . And it's just gotten worse. Atleast you gave me somewhere else to go with it

Does this apply to 2v 4.6 I have the same issue? Update: I read the description and realized it says 2v great video. I replaced one coil on plug with an AutoZone model because It was misfiring so bad. Now it has less misfire but still have the symptoms you were talking about in this video. Should I swap the AutoZone out?
The only true way to diagnose this, is with a live data called mode 6. You could certainly try swapping it out, but you need to know what cylinder is causing the issue. I would also ensure that your plugs are good and are not damaged in any way or showing signs of carbon tracing.
I have a 2000 and an 03 F-150. The 2000 is automatic and the 03 is manual. They have both been having the same problem where at low rpm it begins to vibrate the moment I accelerate but once I hit 3-5k rpm, the truck stops vibrating. This doesn't happen on idle. I appreciate your time if you can help.
Exactly what mine does. It throws a P0302. Unfortunately though, I've replaced the coil and spark plug with no results. It runs great until I hit 50ish mph at 1500 RPM. At that point it begins misfiring. If I tap the gas pedal I can break through the misfire RPM and it'll run great once I get out of the 1500 range. No one has been able to figure out what's causing it. Several mechanics have tried and failed. I just have to live with it.
I have ford excursion v10 6.8. Same problem. So I cleaned up the injectors, new spark plugs, new coils, new fuel filter. Checking in a week, fuel pressure valve and fuel pump. I have a code on the scan tool of de oxigen sensor that also can lid to misfires.

I have a 2002 f150 5.4 2V. runs great for couple minutes and then starts missing skipping then into a dead miss almost. Well I have put a New Fuel pump, New Coil Packs, New fuel injectors, new Spak olugs, new EGR Valve, new Fuel pressure return sensor, new vaccum line from tail lighst to head lights, new INtake, new valvbe cover gaskets, And I am sure I am missin g something. It was showing several codes. Now the service engone soon light is on but it throws ZERO CODES. Yall tell me....Any advice greatly appreciated.
on my 4.6 3v spark plug closest to driver is dirt built up & hardened so i cant even get the socket on tried the pick tool long slim drill bit no luck so far
I just put new coils and plugs in my 2003 gmc Envoy XL didnt have this problem it was slipping with old coils and plugs after replacing plugs and coils the truck stays in overdrive has no slip drives strong but hesitates when i hit 50 now but no slip but gas whew is worse than before any idea whats going on help anyone im a mechanic myself but stumped here

Hey man, I have this exact same issue but with my 1990 4.0L Ranger 2wd auto. It has 84k miles. I’m restoring it. The tranny was just redone and then re-looked at after because I kept thinking it was the tq converter. The tranny is good. I put a new gasket kit on the engine and that’s totally sealed and the FULL tune up kit! Mine uses a coil pack. A new battery was also installed but my ranger is STILL doing this issue in OD at 45-50ish mph! However in Regular D, it drives ok. Since I have a coil pack… what would you recommend? Any help is really appreciated. I’m already deep in this restore and this issue is driving me up the wall.
Mine does it still and I have all brand new plugs and wires sometimes it misfires on cylinder 2 and I stuck lean on bank 1 and 2 it doesn't do it as bad if I'm out of overdrive I can't figure it out please help me mine is a 2006 Ford expedition XLT sport 5.4l 3v with 176,488 miles
It certainly could if the misfire is coming from the coils. However, this is the cheaper alternative that is accomplishing the same thing. Coil on plugs very rarely actually terminally fail. It's usually the issue I outlined in the video.
My problem with a 2010 f150 4.6 3 value was from idle to around 2500rpm the truck shook terribly. Turned out the connection was bad at the mass air flow sensor and until the rpms were way up the air flow sensor was choking the engine
Fixed the problem and doesn't do it anymore but now I have a rough idle were it doesn't have a steady rpm band when at rest. Is running on all cylinders with no codes. Any idea why it may be doing that? Replaced coils and plugs and if maybe I messed something up.
yo bro my 05 5.4 f150 is doing this at this speed I plowed all day with it didnt bog once until I was driving home going 50 im throwing a p1074 lean code I replaced the MAF sensor didnt do a damn thing.
It's worth taking a look but I would do a little digging on that code. Usually a lean code is some sort of leak. I'd start looking for signs of damage hoses and I'd also look at the short I just made on the channel about the evap purge canister hose. It's just a quick overview until my I make my full length video it might give you an idea. The purge solenoid is located to the left of your brake booster on the driver side under the hood
Tmr I will be checking the slot where my fual filter goes. I will be taping around where the end of the filter meets the main box. I have the same truck, same code. And I just watched a video stating to check the intakes first
Mine was not severe but then again, I'm sure it can vary. Ghost misfires are difficult and usually the sign of a tune-up needed. But without viewing mode 6 live data to have a better idea and knowing what you're looking for, it's difficult

I replaced all my coilpacks and plugs but still have a miss, i also put dielectric grease on each spade and on the plug contact side and every connector, but I still have a miss... Maybe someone knows the answer to this question. I used my powerprobe maestro, which can test the injector circuit, and found that on cylinders 5-8, I would see an occasional Injector On Time drop to as low as 40.1 and even 101. Cylinders 1-4 would stay around 2.78 - 3.00 or so and never drop. I think this shows my occasional miss would be on the control side to the injectors, which could be the pcm? Also, I watched a fordtechmakeuloco video where he shows a #7 cylinder intake roller follower popped off and was cause the misfire there..I assume with my findings this shouldn't be what is causing my miss? I also verified I had good voltage to each power side of each injector connector. Any ideas? I replaced the fuel driver control module by the spare tire about 1.5 years ago with a doorman, I don't know if a malfunction in it could cause my on time drop or not though.

I am so glad to hear that! It is certainly worth doing for routine maintenance and while it doesn't necessarily solve every instance of this misfire, it is certainly worth the shot especially if the boots are original. Glad to hear you saved some money 👍👍

I did this to my 2008 fx2 5.4 Ford F-150 and the sputtering in overdrive going around 45-50mph went away I was dealing with that issue for alone time now I changed the coil packs the spark plugs still same thing you guys just need to take them apart put some dielectric grease and install it all back how it was and your problem was gone! My mechanic, whom I'll never go to again was insisting that it was big bucks to fix, he wanted to replace my torgue converter, fuel pump and possibly my transmission aswell.
The truck runs like new again.
As long as it actually fixed the problem that's a great thing. It's not always the cause and can absolutely be a torque converter and other issues. But this is always the easiest thing to check

This is so true. My 11 Expy 5.4L was bucking like 3 yrs ag and no engine light (now at 157k miles and still no engine light). 2 local ahole shops I called "yeah bring it in and we'll replace the engine as it's the timing chains. Chains are slapping around causing misfires"...
The blog I found back then was to change the coils as they get old and crack. I got Holley Accels then and sure enough, the bucking CEASED!!! I hadn't realized the Ford coils were likely good as just boots and springs and tossed them out after moving them around 1/2 doz times in the garage :(
Now 3 yrs later and my Expy started bucking again. This AM I pulled off the coils and lubed up the springs and also noted they didn't extend out so pulled them out a little to ensure they contact the plug.
The bucking is GONZO AGAIN!!!!
Tools required are my Ryobi 1/4" impact driver, 7mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and small extensions for the rear coils.

I'm so happy I found your video, this not only fixed my 06 Ford F-150 with the 5.4, but also saved me a bunch of money for repair, it's amazing the amount of mechanics/shops that are unaware of this issue with the misfires and had told me it was bad fuel, torque converter, spark plugs, and then replacing the entire coil packs. After watching this video realizing my truck was acting exactly as described. I took it upon myself and purchased 8 coil boots and springs from Advanced Auto and 2 hours time and my truck runs perfect again. Awesome I'm so glad! Since you did both it's very possible it was a combination of those but a tune-up is always one of the first things to do. I'd also clean your mass air flow sensor and your throttle body if you haven't already.

Nope it almost is never on. That's why I made the video. People scratch their heads on this and sometimes you can have different causes without having an engine light.
Mine does it going up hill and driving a steady speed around 65 mph. Goes away when I step on gas or let off gas

Holy s*** dude. Thank you so much. This has been driving me nuts for about a year and i just assumed it was a vacuum leak that would cost more to fix than what my 260k mile Explorer was worth... I searched forever but found this video by chance and now i can finally feel the sweet relief of driving at 40mph with no terrifying misfiring.

I have a 06 exp. I've had this issue twice now. Tune up, new plugs but I knew it could be coil related . I put fuel inj cleaner and it does help but it has never 100% fixed the issue. Ford makes really good vehicles but some of the problems they have with their cars are so ridiculous and one of those problems is the design with these injectors. I drove almost for a whole year with my car bogging like you said. That was like four years ago. Then I changed one of the coils and gave it a tune-up and it fix the problem. But now it's back again. It also happened one other time in like a year ago. I'm going to try to do what you recommend. I have been told by a couple mechanics that if you have these Ford engines with these coils that you should use fuel injector cleaner at least like once every couple months and it can prevent the problem. But I think if you don't use the cleaner religiously you will always have this problem return
I run that every few months as well in my vehicles as well as only run top tier gas. It's so funny because you'll have people that never have an issue. But then there are ones that have these ghost misfires every so often. Hope that takes care of it, but like anything, it can be something else

Mine does it at 60 mph almost Every time. I wonder if the speed of the malfunction has anything to do with what coil/bank is malfunctioning? Like if it bogs at 60mph it might be let's say plug#8 and if it bogs at 45mph it may be plug#2. That would be interesting.
Also, just so you know, both times this happened to me, the car sat for ATLEAST 7 days prior to malfunction.

I just had my transmission rebuilt because of bad forward clutches. It shifted fine for a few weeks and developed the dreaded 45-50 mph OD to 3rd shudder which would stop when I let off the throttle. I took it back to the tranny shop and was able to demonstrate the problem but he had no clue what it was. I think he thought it was his work and I get the feeling he did not want to open up the transmission again. Anyways, glad I didn't go nuts and take it to another transmission shop. Dirty coil looks like the answer. It happens when the engine is hot and is more prevalent on hot days so heat is a factor. Since heat affects resistance, it makes sense that heat would cause dirty contact to misfire. I'll report back with my results. Thanks for the video tip.
Got the hearted comment, edited a small error out, and lost the hearted comment. Did not know that was how YT worked. Anyways, my belated report as promised. I found four problems. One coil with corrosion and loose contact which fell out when slinky was removed. One coil with green crust. One very worn spark plug, replaced. One spark plug well that was foiled with debris. Debris was caked in and had to be chipped out and softened with brake cleaner. Debris was heat soaking plug which caused mis-fire. Just finished a couple of days ago and have not had a shudder. Been trying to trigger shudder but seems to be gone now. More miles and time will tell. Anyways, that was an ace suggestion.
Awesome sounds like you found quite a few little issues that were flying under the radar. It really goes to show you how effective it can be to clean them and not be spending upwards of $300-500 for an entire new set. Nice work!
@@3VJohnny True. What bugs me is there were mis-fires under high load which did not set CEL. Had I gotten P0308 or one of the other mis-fire codes, I would have been on it a lot earlier. The other thing that bugs me is how easy it is to misdiagnose ignition problem as something far worse and far more expensive. A dishonest mechanic would have a field day with this.
I believe the shutter u feel is converter lock up trying but misfire is causing it to have way less torque which is what ur ecm reads to match speed and torque to tell the converter to lock up. That’s what ur feeling.

Absolutely! I hope that helps. If all checks well with the coils, and you still have the issue, spark plugs are a likely culprit. Could also be a dirty fuel filter if it's clogged.
A lot of people change spark plugs, and ignore the coil on plugs, and end up chasing other issues. Definitely report back!

Exactly my symptoms. Cylinder 5 code misfire was going to shell out 70 for one coil pack I don't think my auto dealer will have just the springs and boot. Thank you ❤ been going on a while now I can even hear the ticking of the unburned gas in my exhaust at idle as it is misfiring
Coil pack 5 fixed 5 now 6 is complaining but performance is better a lot better. The shudder amd exhaust tapping gone. Acceleration is good no problem so 6 can wait until next month

Thank you. BUT I have an 03 that used to be a DOT truck. It can also run on propane. You guessed it the coil I think is having this problem is the one under the propane system. Took me about 72 hours to change just the plugs. Wish I seen your video first and change the boots too.
I'm experiencing the exact thing in a 2008 Expedition I just purchased earlier this week. I'm getting the parts together now for a full ignition refresh on the 5.4L and hopefully this fixes the problem.
My 2003 F150 5.4 V8 Triton does this but I have 189,000 miles on it. I don't mind replacing the coils and the pigtails because it's been a good and reliable truck: not even valve noise from the engine.

I'm having the same issue in my 05 Ford f150 AND my 2012 Ford flex(only difference is that mine can do it in-between 40-55mph). I'm praying this is what's going on. It's crazy that it's happening in both of my vehicles. Will update with the outcomes as I can afford to fix them 😅

I replaced all 10 spark plugs and coil packs with new ones and it is still happening.
My 07 Sport Trac with a 4.6 3v has been doing exactly this! No stored or pending pcm dtc either. I was worried it was the torque converter. Im going to try thiis and report back.
Its usually the back cylinders (4 and 8) from water intrusion from the crappy cowl drainage. I have seen this on an 06 explorer and my own 07 mustang

My truck sucks. Had a coil go bad. Misfire which caused engine shaking esp about 50mph. I was thinking several things were bad simply bc the issues were so bad. But a simple coil replacement fixed all that. Wow
Exactly! It doesn't mean it's always the case as you know, but far too often people think it's transmission or u-joint issue because of how severe the misfires can be. It's always worth checking these first especially if you rebuild them because it's so cheap. It's worth cleaning them when you do your spark plug change intervals.

2004 lincoln town car 60k, put new coils in it and plugs, new fuel filter, new injectors, watched your video grabbed my old coils rebuilt them like you said....still misfires with no engine light around 35-55. It idles like a dream, it burns rubber and accelerates like a dream. Transmission has been flushed, what should i do now. Every shop says get a new car but no. Head gask and block is perfect. Compression perfect.

Hi good video. It makes sense. I had misfired on my Navigator 05. I changed spark plugs on cylinder 1-4,but still misfired but don;t show light while on overdrive speed 30 to 45 on free way after high speed to slow down. I will check on cylinder 5 -8 and clean coils too. Thanks for the good idea.

I'm having the same issue, I changed the throttle body new spark plugs new coil packs, And it still shutters at low speed, transmission was just replaced 2 weeks ago so it's shifting smooth, now I'm guessing if it's not a fuel injector maybe it's a torque converter
Just had this happen to a 2012 MKZ. My husband put new spark plugs in it and it runs great! We’re pretty sure it had factory plugs in it the whole 211k miles😬
Had this happen with a 4.0 OHV as well. New plugs fixed it.

This has been happening to my 2007 f150 5.4. Today I punched it in od on Highway and was really bucking bad but doesn’t happen in slow speeds. I thought it might be water in tank. Not throwing any code’s however the engine light started flashing and got off highway and light never came back on. Hoping it’s coil packs

I am chasing P0442 small evap leak for over a year now. Could this leak have anything to do with vacuum from brake booster hose? I’ve replaced canister purge and as well as keep my fuel inlet clean with the funnel every fill up. 5.4 3v with 150k…I’ve had this going for over a year now. My pleasure, thanks for watching! I'm not totally sure to be honest. I would check any hoses related to the EVAP system. Your engine is a bit different than my '04. Not sure if you have the same hoses that connect to the EVAP purge solenoid under the hood. On mine, it's near the brake booster and tends to dry rot. It's worth checking as that could certainly cause leaks.
Could be your exhaust manifold. Mine had a hairline crack and was leaking.

Absolutely, this is not a one size-fits-all fix. Misfires can be caused by so many different variables. You can't diagnose it through the internet. It's just something easy to check because it's often neglected and people spend hundreds of dollars replacing coils.
Spark plugs and coils are usually worth changing/cleaning...in addition to cleaning the throttle body & mass air flow sensor. But you can have misfires caused by a wide range of items.
01', 170k. Resealed rear end, coils, plugs, intake manifold, fuel filter, temp sensor, thermostat, still shudders. Drained trans fluid and putting new filter in. We will see🤷🏼♂️Sat for 2 yrs before I put her back on the road.
I have 2013 ford transit connect and I replaced the plugs and coils and fuel injectors and throttle body and maf and air filter.. Still does this around 50-60mph

Thank you for a delailed video. My 05 150 has those exact symptoms. I've been told that the bolts that hold down the coil packs, occasionally break. Can I lightly soak them with something such as WD40, before removing, to avoid the bolts busting off? I know the plugs on the 5.4, break, and I won't even attempt to pull those out, but to just put new could springs look like the easy fix
It’s not the bolt it’s the plastic tab off the back of the coil itself that breaks off ie not holding it down

Great video! Much appreciate the advise, I will try this. I watched another video and this gentleman said the same thing. Another claimed to be the torque converter and recommended Genuine Ford XL3 friction modifier additive.
I used something similiar for the rear diff as it was making vibrations during turns It helped with the limited slip and fixed the problem btw.
For this however I will order a set of springs for all 8 coils.

I have the exact explained misfire and issues at the bottom of the gear befor shifting. I had ford do my plugs and then they were fine and now it's happening again. So annoying on a triton 😅
NEED HELP: I have a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer V8 is was running great. However, it starting a little jerk every blue moon when I would hit the gas while drive but it was sporadic. It still drove great with acceleration. At red lights, if idle too long it would sound like it was loosing power & shake a little. I would hit the gas pedal but it would take the gas 2 seconds slower than usual. Yday, it died at the red light but started right back up. Took it to O'Reilly this morning to check the codes. It gave primary DTC Fuel System Too Lean (Cylinder Bank 1). P0171 crankcase breather house and PCV valve. We replaced the PCV valve but it runs worse and won't stay crank. Please help me.
I have a 2007 F150, it revs very well on park but when in Drive, it doesn't go above 2000rpm and stays between 45 and 50 mph. Then the engine starts making a shooting sound. It looks like the transmission is not turning with the engine speed. What do you think about this?
I had this symptom as well…but i swapped coil from cyl 3 to cyl 5 to see if it followed and it stayed on 3.

Bud I'm about to pull my hair our with one I just bought doing exactly exactly the same thing . It sit for 5years. I've had the fuel tank off so many times I can do it with a rock and a stick. I don't know what I'm doing . I've used seafoam x3 heat . And it's just gotten worse. Atleast you gave me somewhere else to go with it

Does this apply to 2v 4.6 I have the same issue? Update: I read the description and realized it says 2v great video. I replaced one coil on plug with an AutoZone model because It was misfiring so bad. Now it has less misfire but still have the symptoms you were talking about in this video. Should I swap the AutoZone out?
The only true way to diagnose this, is with a live data called mode 6. You could certainly try swapping it out, but you need to know what cylinder is causing the issue. I would also ensure that your plugs are good and are not damaged in any way or showing signs of carbon tracing.

I have a 2000 and an 03 F-150. The 2000 is automatic and the 03 is manual. They have both been having the same problem where at low rpm it begins to vibrate the moment I accelerate but once I hit 3-5k rpm, the truck stops vibrating. This doesn't happen on idle. I appreciate your time if you can help.
Exactly what mine does. It throws a P0302. Unfortunately though, I've replaced the coil and spark plug with no results. It runs great until I hit 50ish mph at 1500 RPM. At that point it begins misfiring. If I tap the gas pedal I can break through the misfire RPM and it'll run great once I get out of the 1500 range. No one has been able to figure out what's causing it. Several mechanics have tried and failed. I just have to live with it.

I have ford excursion v10 6.8. Same problem. So I cleaned up the injectors, new spark plugs, new coils, new fuel filter. Checking in a week, fuel pressure valve and fuel pump. I have a code on the scan tool of de oxigen sensor that also can lid to misfires.

I have a 2002 f150 5.4 2V. runs great for couple minutes and then starts missing skipping then into a dead miss almost. Well I have put a New Fuel pump, New Coil Packs, New fuel injectors, new Spak olugs, new EGR Valve, new Fuel pressure return sensor, new vaccum line from tail lighst to head lights, new INtake, new valvbe cover gaskets, And I am sure I am missin g something. It was showing several codes. Now the service engone soon light is on but it throws ZERO CODES. Yall tell me....Any advice greatly appreciated.
on my 4.6 3v spark plug closest to driver is dirt built up & hardened so i cant even get the socket on tried the pick tool long slim drill bit no luck so far

Hey man, I have this exact same issue but with my 1990 4.0L Ranger 2wd auto. It has 84k miles. I’m restoring it. The tranny was just redone and then re-looked at after because I kept thinking it was the tq converter. The tranny is good. I put a new gasket kit on the engine and that’s totally sealed and the FULL tune up kit! Mine uses a coil pack. A new battery was also installed but my ranger is STILL doing this issue in OD at 45-50ish mph! However in Regular D, it drives ok. Since I have a coil pack… what would you recommend? Any help is really appreciated. I’m already deep in this restore and this issue is driving me up the wall.

I just shifted my 2008 into reverse and the whole truck was shaking. Also the fan after being idle for a while does get super loud.

It certainly could if the misfire is coming from the coils. However, this is the cheaper alternative that is accomplishing the same thing. Coil on plugs very rarely actually terminally fail. It's usually the issue I outlined in the video.

My problem with a 2010 f150 4.6 3 value was from idle to around 2500rpm the truck shook terribly. Turned out the connection was bad at the mass air flow sensor and until the rpms were way up the air flow sensor was choking the engine

Fixed the problem and doesn't do it anymore but now I have a rough idle were it doesn't have a steady rpm band when at rest. Is running on all cylinders with no codes. Any idea why it may be doing that? Replaced coils and plugs and if maybe I messed something up.

yo bro my 05 5.4 f150 is doing this at this speed I plowed all day with it didnt bog once until I was driving home going 50 im throwing a p1074 lean code I replaced the MAF sensor didnt do a damn thing.
It's worth taking a look but I would do a little digging on that code. Usually a lean code is some sort of leak. I'd start looking for signs of damage hoses and I'd also look at the short I just made on the channel about the evap purge canister hose. It's just a quick overview until my I make my full length video it might give you an idea. The purge solenoid is located to the left of your brake booster on the driver side under the hood
Tmr I will be checking the slot where my fual filter goes. I will be taping around where the end of the filter meets the main box. I have the same truck, same code. And I just watched a video stating to check the intakes first
This “misfire “ or vibration associated with a bad coil would throw a code or check engine light correct ?? What if there’s no code .
Nope usually does not if it's just in OD. Makes it hard to track
Would you go as far as describing the shake moderate or severe.? I’m asking because it seems quite severe to me
Mine was not severe but then again, I'm sure it can vary. Ghost misfires are difficult and usually the sign of a tune-up needed. But without viewing mode 6 live data to have a better idea and knowing what you're looking for, it's difficult
Hey 3V Johnny. My 2006 Ford Econoline Van that has 206,000 miles on it does what you're describing.. but there's no engine light on. Will I typically encounter engine light on if it's what you are describing? Also are these Ford e150 known to have problem you're describing? Thank you

Okay, I have a 4.6 l, it's doing the same thing but it's not the coil or the plugs? Any ideas? Nor a transmission issue.

I replaced all my coilpacks and plugs but still have a miss, i also put dielectric grease on each spade and on the plug contact side and every connector, but I still have a miss...
Maybe someone knows the answer to this question. I used my powerprobe maestro, which can test the injector circuit, and found that on cylinders 5-8, I would see an occasional Injector On Time drop to as low as 40.1 and even 101. Cylinders 1-4 would stay around 2.78 - 3.00 or so and never drop. I think this shows my occasional miss would be on the control side to the injectors, which could be the pcm? Also, I watched a fordtechmakeuloco video where he shows a #7 cylinder intake roller follower popped off and was cause the misfire there..I assume with my findings this shouldn't be what is causing my miss?
I also verified I had good voltage to each power side of each injector connector. Any ideas? I replaced the fuel driver control module by the spare tire about 1.5 years ago with a doorman, I don't know if a malfunction in it could cause my on time drop or not though.
