  • Budget mountain bike or Baller mountain bike? We put the $9,800 Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper up against the $3,400 Stumpjumper Alloy Comp. For months, these bikes Were submitted to long rides in a variety of conditions. Both bikes tested were size S4 with the S-Works Stumpjumper coming in at 26 pounds 13 ounces (11.79kg) without pedals, and the Alloy Comp Stumpjupmer was 33 pounds 1 ounce (15kg).
    Is the almost $10,000 bike with FOX Factory suspension, electronic SRAM AXS shifting and carbon Roval wheels worth it? Does the $3,400 bike with limited suspension tunability and SRAM NX drivetrain handle the abuse? We find out in this thorough review that goes through the on-trail descending and climbing performance, geometry differences, parts differences, ride qualities, suspension setup, and more.
    Read the full review on our website: www.vitalmtb.com/features/Spe...
    The riding in this review was filmed on mountain bike and motorcycle trails near Boise, Idaho.

    I have an s3 comp alloy and it’s amazing. I’m a teenager who worked for 8 months to save up for it and it’s a bike I’ll likely have for 5-10 years. For most people who aren’t racing or a professional biker, there’s nothing wrong with the comp alloy.

      Have a M (S2) 2019 Enduro Comp. Essentially a 2021 Stumpjumper but with enduro travel at 170-180mm. A beast and the sensitivity and kinematics are still excellent. Good choice with the Alloy Stumpy.. frames made by Merida in the Taiwan factory are bombproof as heck. You'll have it for years to come.

      Me too! I've gone with the Expert build on both my Roubaix and Stumpjumper and I like the better components and can tell the difference from the entry-level comp but don't think I necessarily need the tip-top of the line S works. One day if the extra 4k doesn't hurt the bank account, maybe I'll consider it but I am so happy with my Experts and glad I spent that little bit more.

    Thank you for this. I had my eye on the alloy Stumpjumper. I would have liked to see a Deore build in lieu of the cheaper Sram stuff, but the $800 jump to the Comp model doesn't seem so big because of the carbon frame and better parts. I hope to see more reviews like this in the future. Great job, and thank you!

    The interview reflected my impression on today's Specialized, which I have been riding for decades now.
    For a hell lot of money (comp alloy) you get a decent bike with cheap/mediocre components (SRAM NX) and so-so performance. Nothing to brag about or be proud off, but it gets you there.
    For an insane amount of money you get a bike that is in the top league and rides like a dream. Anything below an insane amount of money leads to a lot of compromises that make you think about moving to other brands. To help you with this decision, Specialized now raised the prices even higher with U$ 11.000 for the Stumpjumper S-Works. And that is still a bargain compared to the new Epic S-Works at an astronomical U$15.000 (!). Only hardcore Specialized enthusiasts are welcome there. Thanks, but no thanks. Unless I am a sponsored rider.

      Yep...and honestly this review came off very snobby and elitist. Atleast now the bikes are mostly marked down significantly since the covid boom is over. A stumpjumper comp carbon is 40% off right now, showing just how grossly overpriced these were to begin with.

    Great review. Awesome to see this post a week from when I bought mine. I picked the Comp Alloy since it has good components for my intended use and the price of entry wasn't astronomical compared to other bikes. The weight is noticeable when climbing but I'm hoping as things wear out (drivetrain, and wheels) I can upgrade in the right places to bring the weight down a bit. Very cool bike for the price.

    I bought the 2019 comp alloy in March 2019 and the bike has seen it’s fair share of big hits and bad landings and it is still going like a trooper. I’ve replaced every bearing on the bike at least once due to wear and riding in all conditions, all year round and like you said, the wheels are only good as long as you look after them.
    The one bad thing about this bike is that single discipline focus. It is a bike that is designed to make trail riding super fun which it absolutely nailed, but when it gets into DH bike territory, there are no upgrades that are going to make it handle well and within its comfort zone like a modern enduro bike will.
    For the majority of my rides, the upgrades I have added over the years keep it right up there with my mates on 180mm enduro bike but like I said, there’s a point (like 8ft drops into a footy rock garden) where the bike quickly finds its limits and ejects you from the driving seat.
    Great review guys, really good to see this comparison, particularly with the bike I own. 🤘🏼

    • @jlj547
      @jlj547 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2019 and 2021 are very different bikes. You would not want to send the new one off of 8ft drops you will destroy it pretty quickly. I would say that the evo version is the bike to have if your riding those kind of trails.

    I picked up a 21 Stumpjumper Expert and have to agree with your shifting experience. I have yet to get the bike to shift correctly myself. Mostly no-shifts to double-shifts but common enough to really mess up your flow. I also ended up adding the larger vol. spacer to the rear and ended up setting the BB on the high side and it made a huge difference in the climbing.

    The SJ Comp Carbon would have been a better/closer comparison to the SJ Comp Alloy. It's the same carbon frame and geo as the S-Works and would have been closer components wise (SRAM NX vs. Shimano SLX), and $800 price difference. I've had the SJ Comp Carbon for about 2 months and love it. Coming from a 2014 SJ alloy. S-Works is a whole different level of bike and likely rider. Great review and like the format.

    I just spent $8k on a Mach 6. My buddy just a little over $3k on a Meta AM. We ride down the same trails, we go just as fast, and there's nothing my bike can do that his can't. Value and worth aren't the same for everyone. Was it worth the extra $5k? To me, yeah, it was, but I could certainly see how most people think it's a complete waste of money. I'm not into cars, so I'd rather have a Civic with $50k in the glove compartment, instead of a Porsche or something like that. A sports car fan might think the opposite. Same thing with watches. I'll take a Swiss Army watch over a Rolex cause I'm just not a watch guy ... but bikes? That's my thing, it's what I'm into and to me it's worth every penny.

I could I get a more expensive bike, but I just can't justify it. My 3k bike is awesome, it rips and looks good. So, I suppose we should ride what we can afford and justify spending money on..

    I have a base model 2021 stumpy alloy, it's my first bike in 5 years and my first fs bike. Maybe 100 miles on it so far. After a basic setup and walkthrough with the dealer, I was basically able to just go ride and enjoy it and gradually learn how to tune the suspension and gearset.
    It's 1k less than the comp, definitely a compromise on suspension parts and the brakes, but it's still an amazing bike to me to get into grown up mtb's with a lot of room for future upgrades and it gets the job done. My last bike was a GT Outpost, so this is a huge step up, like orders of magnitude, though the gt was way lighter and quicker on gravel/tarmac.
    I do wish it were a bit faster just about everywhere, but it's a really satisfying bike to just get out, learn and be able to hang where hardtails might have trouble, as long as you're okay with just chilling and not being the fastest rider out there.
    Hopefully this is helpful to someone if 3400 is a scary price, 2500 is definitely a bit easier to swallow, especially if you are just building up a set of gear to go with it :) lots of learning and upgrading in the future 😎
    Great and fair review, the alloy stumpjumpers are great for what they are, but for almost 10k personally I'd step towards a Pivot or Santa Cruz.

    • @rcg9573
      @rcg9573 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nah, he’s just not a gullible fool easily parted from his money.
      If you think $3K for a bicycle )a bicycle) is a budget bike you’re one of those gullible fools, who has bought into the industry’s nonsensical pricing in recent years.
      My MTB is a Trek aluminum that cost $490. $490 and yet I manage to pass clowns on $3K to $10K high zoot Enve tricked out MTB’s all the time. If all those $$$ bought serious performance gains it should be almost impossible for me to pass any of them on my sub $500 bike, yet it happens every ride.
      Regardless of the sport there will always be a good sized collection of consumer goofball types out there thinking they can purchase their performance. You see it in cycling, golf, skiing, sailing, tennis, etc…. I regularly see morons that can’t hit a golf ball straight 150 yards to save their life playing with $5K sets of clubs.
      I can’t tell you the number of clowns I see out on the road on $7K+ Specialized Tarmac’s with high zoot Zipp or Enve Carbon wheels, who ride and climb at a snails pace up moderate grades. It’s actually funny passing them because they thought by simply cracking open their wallet it would by magic make them much faster, which of course it never does. Lots of gullible consumer poser types out there, but it’s hard to pose going uphill. Just saying. 😆

      @HOllyBOni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@rcg9573Personally I didn't buy an "expensive" MTB to be faster. I don't care how fast I am at all (seriously, not at all). I bought one because to me higher end equipment feels nicer to use. I know some people don't care about that at all, and that's perfectly fine as well. No one is forcing me to ride, I'm out there to have a good time, and nicer equipment can help with that (again, that's just me). Maybe I'm a fool, great. I could spend my money on worse things than a bike. 🙂
      And no, I'm not rich (not that there is a problem with being rich), I saved up for a long time. And of course I absolutely love my bike, it motivates me to go out and ride.
      What if someone is into cars and spends tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands on restoring an old car for example, instead of buying a new one that's cheaper, faster, has more comfort features etc. Is that dumb? To me it's not, because that old car probably has some kind of "magic" in the eyes of the owner. A nice bike can do the same thing for certain people (on top of being nicer to use). Nothing wrong with that IMO

    I think the comp carbon is the sweet spot currently. $800 more than the comp alloy, but you get a carbon frame with swat and slightly better SLX 7100 series components vs the NX drivetrain and G2 R brakes.

      I looked at one today but the shop was so busy I didn't get many details. If you don't mind, tell me how you like the dropper post, and the rear shock adjustability. And how much does it weigh. I was a little concerned about the storage compartment making the frame weak. $4200 seems high for low/med specs to me. The other one was the $2400 alloy with sram sx , x fusion rear, rockshox silver forks which I've never heard of but I was thinking could be upgraded later. I went to get a wheel and was told it's looking like two year wait on upgrades. Anyway, thanks for your time.

      @@saddleweary9709 I do have the comp carbon and with better wheels and new carbon bar it weighs in at 29lbs. The DPS shock is fine once I got it set up to my liking adding a .8 volume reducer. Even the rhythm fork is solid although I had to add 3 tokens to help it from bottoming. The xfusion dropper performs well, no issues yet. I would not be worried about the storage weakening the frame, Specialized uses that on the EVO and Enduro which are made to take a beating. If you wanted to start with the cheapest alloy build and upgrade parts later, the parts are out there, you just might be a little patient and may need to look around to find what you need and accept that they likely will not discounted.

You've been a great help, now I feel better about it. Later my friend

    Hey guys, great review! I'm actually going to be ordering a 2023 (2022?) Stumpy next week but I'm struggling with the Comp Carbon and the Comp Alloy.
    Its an $1800CDN difference and the only reason I can think of to get the carbon version would be the weight savings which from what I could find online is about a 2lbs difference (30ishlbs [could only find the Expert weight] vs 33lbs). SLX on carbon vs NX on the alloy and the venerable Shimano MT800 vs SRAM DUB.
    A bit about me: 6'1, 210lbs, definitely just a 2 day a week/weekend warrior - no racing. Lots of technical climbs and I swear there's more climbs than descents. The descents aren't very long either - no mountains here in Northern Ontario, Canada. I would classify most of my riding as technical single track/hiking trails with lots of rock.
    Any thoughts on if its worth it to spring for the carbon version?

    6:45 So if you put the high-end suspension on the Aluminum, is it worth having the very expensive carbon frame if you are not a professional racer and just a regular mountain biker? I'm starting to come to that conclusion after seeing other brands come out with the aluminum version of the carbon, like the Ripley AF that is actually more capable than the carbon downhill. My last 3 bikes have been carbon and will probably be that way from now on, but if I were a young mountain biker just starting out, I'd definitely go aluminum with bikes like this.
