The main characters for the games have their own story line for a long time, and various parts of the story can change depending on the character you choose. There is actually a spin-off series featuring all the original main characters from the mainline games.
That's cool to know buddy! I noticed a change in the structure of the mission line but wasn't sure if they were forks in the road or not. Not easy to experiment when the game is so massive!
The franchise also has a tradition of having secrets like getting some enemies to join you, altering some important scenes that happened in their respective anime series, or having a hidden best ending. The secrets require meeting certain conditions across multiple stages. There's actually a good deal of replay value from them.
A note on the difficulty: A lot of it comes from dealing with the SR Point requirements, which if you get over (I think) 75% of them, it pushes you up to hard mode. "Expert" mode keeps you permanently in hard mode, but robs you of those unique challenges that add a little extra flavor to each mission.
I'd like to point out that playing with overpowered units blazing across the battlefield had always been a part of this series... From the very first game having Mazinger being capable of handling a squad of Zakus on his own, but it does certainly feel like your squad either be too overpowered being capable of mowing down a platoon of (insert grunt mech/ robot/ kaiju monsters name here) or being easily trashed by some enemy ace(s) or super enemy. The games while having overall the same general gameplay each one of them tend to have specific mechanics and different stats which can make some of them easier (or harder) than others. There's another super robot wars I'd recommend, not officially translated in english but it's pretty good, delivers when it comes to difficulty and most importantly has a fan-translation, super robot wars A portable.
Just chiming in to say that as somebody who's been playing Super Robot Wars since the PS1 and PS2 games (Japanese only), the English translation in this game is excellent. The people who translated the game clearly have been playing Super Robot Wars games for the past decade. Only thing I'm confused about is why they translated God Gundam as Burning Gundam when clearly all the Japanese voiceovers say "God [insert attack name here]". My guess is that it has something to do with the state Domon's in early in the game...guess I'll find out later in the game. In any case, I'm SO HAPPY to Switch got its first SRW game! :D
The name changes are based on the official English dub influenced by the censorship standards of the 90s/early 2000s. It's for the benefit of those who might not be familiar with the original Japanese names.
The official localized name for the God Gundam was Burning Gundam. Many of the G Gundam machines had their names changed in localization for a few reasons, but in God's case if was because when G was originally licensed and dubbed, there were still a lot of hangups about religious naming. So God Gundam had to be censored into Burning Gundam, and this localization is using whatever official North American names exist when applicable- and that is the sensible approach lest name and brand confusion happens.
Just bought it today (should arrive in a few days), definitely my kind of casual game. Those visuals sold me on the game instantly, I sure hope the game is worth the £60 price tag. Brilliant review, wouldn't have discovered this game without it.
I love this game! My favorite mission so far has Captain Harlock fighting alongside his longtime friends the Crossbone Vanguard (such a cool idea). They are trying to free allies from prison while Spike (From Bebop) pretends to work with Harlock. Spike however is just waiting for an opportunity to catch Harlock for the outstanding bounty so he won't have to eat bell peppers and beef. . . with no beef. The entire game is littered with references and interesting what would happen if this character met that one moments. I can't recommend it enough to anyone who likes any of the shows featured, and even those who have not seen them should still find a lot of enjoyment.
Nice to see SRW get a positive review from you. This series has come a long way since the early Gameboy days. Back then the west and rest of the world had little to no idea about this game. I am happy to see many new players interested in this series. Regarding the difficulty of the game, it varies throughout the series. I think they lowered it a little on these new releases so as to entice new players. I remember some past games from the ps1 and gameboy were insanely hard compared to ps3 titles.

@@SwitchWatch I knew it was gaining ground when it was almost impossible for me to get the special edition of Fates. An just as hard for me to get the Fire Emblem "new" 3DS XL. Glad I got both an have enjoyed srpgs for a long time. Prior to all these new found fans that think Fire Emblem three Houses has good writing. Mainly because prior to play in FE:TH all they've played prior were games with no story.

@@loki43 V's translation was ALOT better than Moon Dwellers. Then again MD has only one english translator working on it so its not too surprising that it wasn't the best it could be. Thankfully the translations have been getting alot better.
Damn you. I didn't know this existed until today and now as cheap as I am I am actively trying to talk myself out of buying this game for $70. I am hoping my wife can help talk me out of it, but I see myself buying this today.
oh btw there are full english fan translations to their older games if you're interested like SRW Alpha Gaiden to the PS1 SRW J for the gameboy advance and SRW A Portable for the PSP all are very great if you won't mind a bit of piracy and emulation
I can read Chinese, but the Chinese version on Taobao is 405 RMB， which works about to be about 80 Canadian dollars, which is the price of a AAA game at full price.
Rayearth first appearance a must buy for me, BX is much more complicated due to its pairing / group system plus all Japanese interface and the enemy know how to dodge and hit you
This game series goes beyond anything Fire Emblem could hope to achieve. Ironically, FE was part of Banpresto, spin off sequel to Namco X Capcom, called Project X Zone 2: Brave New World
The price will drop eventually. The price for the physical Switch version did get a slight price drop before release due to the fact that the asia-english version wouldn't come bundled with the early purchase dlc, which instead is a update for the switch version when you first install the game which is pretty cool.

Man, Super Robot Wars. I haven’t played one of these since the games on the GBA. Never finished them, got towards the last quarter before my young adolescent mind couldn’t figure out how to strategize outside of “bum rush” and kept getting my ass handed to me.
While the first OG is easily finishable, the second game is quite tricky to pull off. (Especially when you get to the parts with bosses having half a million regenerative hp)

I'm pumped to get my copy in from Play-Asia. I ordered it a few weeks ago and it's supposedly in the U.S. now so it should be getting to me this week. However, the trend I've noticed in the last few SRW games (V and X in particular) is that they're getting dumbed down and easier compared to a lot of the previous games in the series. How does this compare to previous games? X was a boring slog, but at least V was entertaining enough to make up for how easy it was (on on the PS4). I think X was the first game in the series where I was able to get every single extra point on the map on my very first play through, and it felt cheap.
Oh yea if u have a flash drive make a folder called SRWMUSIC and u can pick your own song from wherever for each characters song to change to whatever u prefer

if youre looking for something more strategic than srw, i would definitely recommend the disgaea series. 5 is on switch and its sublime. also the attack animations go a step beyond the ridiculousness of srw, while also actually being played on the field a lot of the time.

I don't understand the comparison to fire emblem? I find that a challenge on the higher difficulties. But for SRW I have to do a stipulation to never spend any credits etc on top of that.
gonna be honest, i was never a SRW kinda guy, more of a SD G Generation. probably due to the farming and upgrading. still waiting on a game that will mix both series taking the best parts of both.
like i said, im more of a sd gundam g generation, stealign units, upgrading them and all that, i just wish they went with a more customizable system, maybe something like the gba og games, that let you equip diferent weapons and so on.

I love this game and I do not regret getting this. The only thing I am aggravated about is the fact that there is no way to purchase the DLC if u purchase the physical asian copy of the game. Bandai Namco should have had a game plan for this ahead of time.
@Ogami I have the Super Robot War X, V, and Og Moon Dwellers all for PS4 and I did the same thing with a Singapore PSN account. I just wanted to support the Switch release, but didnt know beforehand about the DLC. It sucks but what can I do about it, ya know... they are all amazing games.
Just ordered mine off eBay. Was cheaper and is easier, Playasia sucked because it charged me again for import fees over the custom fees when I ordered SRW V.
If you like SRW series, try the old Neo SRW from Playstation 1, the only one not in SD format. I wished this would be the standard instead of the SD format.

Idk why the game look crisper and the motion is smoother than the PC port version of SRW V... The text is more readable, the menu is sharp, and also the depicted characters. i.e. at 9:48 The smoother feeling probably because of the fast forwarding effect, idk. Feels like playing anime at interpolated 60fps.
Are there any games in this series that don’t require previous knowledge of the franchise or mech in general? Pretty knew to it but I like fire emblem, advance wars etc, just looking for something similar
There’s the OG series on GBA but they’re not quite in this league. I honestly wouldn’t let a lack of knowledge put you off. I had no idea about any of these prior to playing and I loved it. It made me want to learn about them

I believe it's available digitally in Japan, but don't get that because it doesn't have English. I am not sure if there is a South East Asian eShop or not.
Fire emblem with mecha is underselling SRW series a lot. The franchise has been around since the late 80s and established a golden standard in creating crossover worlds with single overarching narrative. Not to mention "fixing" unpopular endings like Seed Destiny and Code Geass. Storyline wise, SRW makes Fire Emblem series looks like it's written by grade schoolers
the 1st fe game was released just a few years after the 1st srw game. also, there arent even many crossover games. lastly, these are basically fanmade stories. they arent canon even if its better than the original.
Fire Emblem came out in 1990 on the NES and SRW 1 came out for the original gameboy in 91. Fire Emblem is one of the originators of SRPGs in Japan while SRW and others kind of followed them.
Yep! Well, it makes T easier to purchase, at least. The Japanese eShop was already easy to buy V and SD Gundam due to English being available there and eShop credit more easily available
I played both original generations gba games that came to the US and I loved them. I was sad when no other game came out but I'm really surprised I missed out on a few that are available in English via the Asian version. Is there a Premiun Anime sound edition in english? I searched but there seems to be only one in english and it's the standard one, not sure if the premium they have is in english too or if there is a way to download the anime songs on the e shop somehow.
Project x zone maybe? I know the 2nd game is also cheap. Just wish you could skip battle animations in that one like in srw. But yeah text heavy, I'll stick with pokemon rangers guardian signs or valkyria Chronicles.
Holy shit, I don’t really like mecha but love SRPGs and this looks pretty legit. Gorgeous graphics as well. Is the English script really as decent as you say? Sometimes Asian releases have English as a third language for Hong Kong and so it’s an afterthought, meaning the translation can be dicey.
@@nineballmk2 Moon Dwellers had only 1 english translator so its understandable why it wasn't as good as it could've been. The translations have been getting alot better since then, its just the odd grammar mistake and spelling mistake from time to time but nothing major.
I don’t mind being OP on a game. As long as I’m making progress and leveling up in the game I’m all good. I hate dying over and over, I don’t have time for that. Lol! The price is insane right now, and I’ll have to wait. However SRWX seems to be the way to go for now.
Does anyone knows if you can change the eshop account linked to your Switch easilly? Is it as hard to do as with the PS Vita? Or you have to buy another Switch?
You can just switch the region of your eShop account from the NIntendo website. Or if you don't want to keep doing that, then you can just make a new account on your system with a different email address and set it to which ever region you want. I have accounts for UK, US and Japan. Btw, remember - Don't buy the Japanese version. There is no English on that version.
what should I do to play it in eng on EU Switch? import chinese physical copy or can also digital download from chinese online store? is it region unlocked in both cases?
As far as I'm aware there is no digital store in China so importing seems to be the only option. The link posted in the description/pinned comment should take you to the one that will work in English on an EU system.

SwitchWatch, Amazon stated that the V version has menu and subtitles in Enlgish. My concern was that the game would be subtitled, but all of the menus would be in Japanese. 😳 Thank you.
I believe there is not an eshop for the Asia region (where the SRWT english version is intended for). The only digital option is the japanese one, unfortunaly.

The series is almost as old too. The second Super Robot Wars came out on the FC, which is the Japanese version of NES.

This game was the reason why I've been getting into mecha animes that I wasn't familiar with like mightgaine, Yamato 2199, and gundam 00.

The difficulty will get higher on normal if u go for the SR points in expert mode u get them automatically which stacks and make the game harder

I think X was the first game in the series where I was able to get every single extra point on the map on my very first play through, and it felt cheap.

if youre looking for something more strategic than srw, i would definitely recommend the disgaea series. 5 is on switch and its sublime.
also the attack animations go a step beyond the ridiculousness of srw, while also actually being played on the field a lot of the time.

I don't understand the comparison to fire emblem? I find that a challenge on the higher difficulties. But for SRW I have to do a stipulation to never spend any credits etc on top of that.
gonna be honest, i was never a SRW kinda guy, more of a SD G Generation. probably due to the farming and upgrading. still waiting on a game that will mix both series taking the best parts of both.

I love this game and I do not regret getting this. The only thing I am aggravated about is the fact that there is no way to purchase the DLC if u purchase the physical asian copy of the game. Bandai Namco should have had a game plan for this ahead of time.
Sorry I couldn't mention something like that in my review since I really had no idea about it or if there was a way to do it.

@Ogami I have the Super Robot War X, V, and Og Moon Dwellers all for PS4 and I did the same thing with a Singapore PSN account. I just wanted to support the Switch release, but didnt know beforehand about the DLC. It sucks but what can I do about it, ya know... they are all amazing games.

Just ordered mine off eBay. Was cheaper and is easier, Playasia sucked because it charged me again for import fees over the custom fees when I ordered SRW V.

If you like SRW series, try the old Neo SRW from Playstation 1, the only one not in SD format.

Idk why the game look crisper and the motion is smoother than the PC port version of SRW V...
The text is more readable, the menu is sharp, and also the depicted characters. i.e. at 9:48
The smoother feeling probably because of the fast forwarding effect, idk. Feels like playing anime at interpolated 60fps.

There’s the OG series on GBA but they’re not quite in this league. I honestly wouldn’t let a lack of knowledge put you off. I had no idea about any of these prior to playing and I loved it. It made me want to learn about them

It's uh, a pretty dramatic departure from "Fire emblem with mechs". This series makes Fire Emblem look like a tiny speck.

Fire emblem with mecha is underselling SRW series a lot.
The franchise has been around since the late 80s and established a golden standard in creating crossover worlds with single overarching narrative. Not to mention "fixing" unpopular endings like Seed Destiny and Code Geass.
Storyline wise, SRW makes Fire Emblem series looks like it's written by grade schoolers

the 1st fe game was released just a few years after the 1st srw game. also, there arent even many crossover games. lastly, these are basically fanmade stories. they arent canon even if its better than the original.
Just to clarify, Super Robot Wars first released in 1991 on the Gameboy.
Fire Emblem came out in 1990 on the NES and SRW 1 came out for the original gameboy in 91.
Fire Emblem is one of the originators of SRPGs in Japan while SRW and others kind of followed them.

Holy shit, I don’t really like mecha but love SRPGs and this looks pretty legit. Gorgeous graphics as well. Is the English script really as decent as you say? Sometimes Asian releases have English as a third language for Hong Kong and so it’s an afterthought, meaning the translation can be dicey.
I wouldn't say the translation is perfect or anything as there were a few weird phrases or words used, but on the whole I was very happy with it.
@@SwitchWatch let me put it this way. The translation is better then the first time they did it in "SRW OG Moon Dwellers"
@@nineballmk2 Moon Dwellers had only 1 english translator so its understandable why it wasn't as good as it could've been. The translations have been getting alot better since then, its just the odd grammar mistake and spelling mistake from time to time but nothing major.
I don’t mind being OP on a game. As long as I’m making progress and leveling up in the game I’m all good. I hate dying over and over, I don’t have time for that. Lol! The price is insane right now, and I’ll have to wait. However SRWX seems to be the way to go for now.

Does anyone knows if you can change the eshop account linked to your Switch easilly? Is it as hard to do as with the PS Vita? Or you have to buy another Switch?
You can just switch the region of your eShop account from the NIntendo website. Or if you don't want to keep doing that, then you can just make a new account on your system with a different email address and set it to which ever region you want. I have accounts for UK, US and Japan. Btw, remember - Don't buy the Japanese version. There is no English on that version.

As far as I'm aware there is no digital store in China so importing seems to be the only option. The link posted in the description/pinned comment should take you to the one that will work in English on an EU system.

I believe there is not an eshop for the Asia region (where the SRWT english version is intended for). The only digital option is the japanese one, unfortunaly.

Remember the Japanese version does not have English. You need the Asian version instead.
