      Ordered new Callaway Apex on May 19th, they’re still not here! Brexit, COVID, the boats stuck in the canal, supply issues with shafts and grips.
      These delays must have cost the golf industry havoc financially.
      Would love you to do an investigative piece Mark.

    I use Arccos, and it has been eye opening for me, as I’m sure all other systems are to those you use them. My tendency was to be short and to the right on my approach shots, so I worked on taking more club and practicing a draw with my irons. Can’t say enough good things about Arccos. The data is invaluable.

      I have been using Arccos too. The data is useful in pointing out where I need to practice. I like the feature that allow your game to be compared to others on the same handicap. My weakness is distance off the tee, but at my age ( 67) I think maybe Arccos is comparing me to much younger golfers at the same handicap.

    Yeah been using strokes gained for about 2 years now, confirmed to me that I was a far better putter than what I thought and in fact my short game and approach wasn’t as good as I thought, been trying to use it to improve my short game this season and been tracking how my practice is affecting my last few rounds.

    This is really good stuff, Mark. I suspect mode than a few ppl still need a tutorial on what the actual strokes gained calculation is. Mark Brodies example in his book, using a Jason Day stinky par is really helpful. We had our club champ this weekend (I set a PR while still finishing last in the Championship Flight) and I used strokes gain language to discuss strategy w other players after the rounds. It was 50/50 at best, with the older members being the least likely to understand me.

    I have used strokes gained for about a year inbetween lockdowns . I like the way you can keep track of each element of the game and it is always interesting where to see where the improvements are mainly ie if your tee shot is around 250yds total big premium on fairway and then track you success with iron ranges or not ……It definitly easier with gadgets on the club grips for registering the shots and then seeing the game graphically on off the course

  • @mattgoldsmith7081
    @mattgoldsmith7081 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven’t used strokes gained yet. Similar to you Mark, I worked on short game a lot during lockdowns and the winter months. I am now finding that my game is totally reliant on getting up and down. I am now trying to work on approach shots into greens. Strikes gained will help me with which distances I need to work on.

    I understand it, first used it in gamegolf, then golf metrics, now just signed up to decade. Big picture it showed me what I knew but it allows me to drill down into the nuances and work towards a better game. Eg. I knew my short putts were quite good and longer ones OK. In reality my short putts are very good my mid putts are terrible and my long putts are poor. So I will focus on mid putts first then if long putts are still poor, look at them. The more focused I can see my game the more focused I can be and the more meaningful my practice can be.

    Yes, heard it explained by Mark Brodie as how many strokes you are to the hole, that helped. It's showed me that my approach play is the major thing holding me back, the rest of my game is pretty much where it needs to be. Without it I'd probably still be practicing all areas evenly.

  • @davidknight6250
    @davidknight6250 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I worked hard on hitting fairways with my woods for a couple of years. Stats improved significantly, but scores hardly moved, but consistency improved . Next I tackled chipping and putting and that took me down 2 shots on my handicap from 12 to 10. Now I’m looking at greens in regulation, the difference between a good score and an average one seems to be 44% vs 33%. I feel I have a way to go on this. New irons are already having a positive impact, with my last round 66% GIR, but a few good birdie chances missed and a couple of poor tee shots giving me a score of +9.

    Yes aware, I need to measure more closely for it to be effective, though I tend to go back over a round not just for fairways / greens hit but also whether I put myself in a decent place or not. Next practice split equally in 3 - long game / chipping / putting - long game focus being grip & set-up, along with not rushing from the top. Great vid Mark👍

    I have the shotscope v3 watch, this is my first experience of shots gained. I think ?! that it shows the areas of my game where I am not as successful, I can compare myself with a tour pro but thats fun but not really realistic, I prefer to compare with the 20hc or 15hc levels as I'm an 18hc and can see where I'm succeeding or failing in my game. So I tried the Golf metrics app for the first time a few days ago... Very interesting results. Always thougth I was evenly good/bad on each part of the game with my hcp 8. But the numbers told me something else. OK from tee, approach BAD, putting BAD, and finaly a pro-like short game. I'm not losing strokes against a pro from 20-60 exept from the bunker! So what to do now, make the bad a little less bad or make the good parts awesome 😏
    I will continue with the app and maybe it all levels out eventually. But I am going to brag about my pro like short game 😁

    I will say no, and the reason why is that it’s getting in the way of my course management. It sometimes are very helpful but I find that when I plan to miss a specific area through course management obviously the stats are showing it. That doesn’t mean I did not play like I planned to play and a lot of the times I played there for a reason. Strokes gained is cold hard stats that does not take the bigger picture in mind. It’s great to know how you are doing against benchmarks and which areas are needing some help but it can be messy. In my example if I am laying up missing specifically my approach gained will look bad but putting might be better as I am closer to the hole

    There are better stats than strokes gained.
    I use Mark Brodie's GolfMetrics app. Yes, the strokes gained stats are useful, but it also provides several stats that I think are more directly useful for improvement:
    1. Make % from 3-6 feet. This has got to be high.
    2. Make % from 7-9,10-12,13-17. You have to make some of these.
    3. 3-putts from 30-40,40+. Needs to be low.
    4. Distance from the hole for 0-20yrd chips. 5ft for scratch.
    5. Distance from the hole for 100-150yrd approaches. 29ft for scratch.
    It also shows you strokes gained for every shot. So if you birdie a par three, you might have saved half a stroke on the tee shot and half a stroke on the put.

    I sort of understand strokes gained, however, I am happy just to be playing, would strokes gained actually help me reduce my handicap, I’m not convinced it would. I have my Garmin which I download and have a look at distances hit with each club etc, then try to eliminate the bad shots next time out by remembering what I did the round before. Of course, that’s great on home track, when at a different course then just use it for distances and hazard identification etc etc.
