That is a comprehensive critical analysis of ‘lag’ - what is actually happening! I love it when you apply it to the different golfers…. ‘LAG IS NOT MY FRIEND’
You've been preaching this for years, i remember the lockey flip, i admire your persistence MC, for some reason you get stick on YT, but i've yet to find a more consistent teacher. Thank you for posting. I miss your live lessons at clifton, always remember a welsh guy you helped. Anyway, cheers mate 👍👊
How good were the OG live lessons!! It’s what really made me get right into golf and start understanding it all properly and become a low handicap player. How good would it be to have the chance to have one of those lessons 🙌🙌
Brilliant Mark! I tried the whole lagging thing a few times, it never worked. As time goes by I realise that a neutral set up is fundamental for a more consistent swing. When things drift, which they always do, you can go back to where you started more easily. Golf is full of mythical thinking!
Once again Mr Parfield brings his integrity and depth of knowledge to make us think critically about another golf hot topic. I do enjoy how you make me think about golf.👍👍
These are the kind of videos I truly love from you! Circles back to the early days, "let's get stuck in" videos which I'm a huge fan of (nothing better that that on TH-cam so far for me). In depth analysis of golf mechanics and how one gesture leads to another and then leads to a good or bad strike. The wrist angle videos changed my game. The face to path one's blew my mind. More of these please!! :)
Totally agree. Theres so many golf 'instructors' on social media who think theres a right way or wrong way to swing a golf club. Theres not. Its about finding the best match ups that work for your swing.
As I've heard people say, golf is a simple game made complicated, this video really backs up that thought... It is also reassuring that keep my wrist neutral (flat to my forearm) is the roght thing to do and amother reason why my driving is becoming so much better. Thamk you as always Mark. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Brilliant Mark! I don't know if you know how much you mean to TH-cam golf, but you are worth your weight in gold! You have done more to try and educate us than just about everybody else and for your dedicated service to everybody that watch your videos you are King. From now on I will always call you King Mark in the comment section. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for educating us.
This is my biggest problem. From a young age 25 years ago I was shown and told that lag is everything. Now I get stuck with the club so far behind . Starting to work it out and getting good results. Once again brilliant lesson.
Great demo of `downhinging` in the downswing and NOT trying to hold the radial deviation. Everybody has to understand that it is a two-dimension or multi-dimension move! Thanks for sharing!!
Great video. Nice when an instructor makes your golf simpler by taking myths out of the amateur's swing and let us focus on aspects that can genuinely improve your game.
One of the best TH-cam videos you've done. I've always been a really 'laggy' player since I was a kid. But, now I'm older I just can't physically match up the angles at impact anymore, correcting the open face the lag creates. 100% this has sorted what I'm working on this winter. 👍
What a great video. I’ve recently been trying to add more wrist angle on my back swing and noticed I’ve started to hit ballooning shots off to the right with my driver. This explains exactly what was happening so I’m off to the range tomorrow with this new knowledge. Great work yet again mark 👍🏻
Much needed video to help clear up some of the commonly misunderstood and misrepresented statements around lag. Hopefully it finds its way to the people who will benefit from watching it.
As a senior with some flexibility issues, I've found that holding some lag actually helps me in 2 ways. Keeping my wrist pretty flat, and keeping a reasonable amount of lag, I get more club head speed, hence I get more distance. My normal shot with driver is fairly straight, or a baby draw. I've tried chucking the club, the results are hilarious. Trying to hold a bunch of lag isn't my best as when I'm trying to hold on, I get more often than not, a high slice. BTW, I'm 73, I have scoliosis in my back along with arthritis. Even so, my carry with driver is 250-260 normally. This info is Very informative, we can count on you, Mark to show what the reality is, thank you.
MC! Brilliant. I appreciate how you always have data to support your points. I wish more instructors would do the same. As an engineer, I admire the use of the pertinent data to complement your lessons.
Love these types of educational videos. For so long “lag and don’t cast” are the terms we hear, but it’s not what’s really happening. Keep up all the great work! ‘LAG IS NOT MY FRIEND’
Athletic Motion Golf explains this very well showing us the Gears Models. Far less "lag" than previously thought. If you get as wide as possible with the trail arm helping the lead arm stay straight it will help the lag happen rather than trying to match the appearance of lag. Lag is a byproduct not a swing thought in itself. - Flea Trevino
Great explanation Mark, I’ve given up long ago about making speed with lag and only focus on getting the left hip as far away from the butt of the club! I witnessed a Peter Jacobson clinic and he said if you want distance forget about the word lag and start making space for the butt of your club, it simply works!
Love it Mark!! I have always struggled with the slice. I am going to give this a try, and see what happens. Makes complete sense!! Keep it coming and stay safe!!
Thank you Mark Crossfield! 👏 Although I was never trying to increase lag, your anti-lag video just fixed my slice I've been battling for years! Toss the angles away! Cheers 🍻
I've been playing pretty well this summer and my handicap is steadily decreasing but in the past few weeks I have been losing a lot of my iron shots to the right. I've been watching you for ~10 years now so this was a good reminder to play with/remove lag
Well explained on so many levels. Thanks. Another example of what we see and feel is NOT what's actually happening. And coaches and instructors trying to fix problems with tricks instead of basic boring corrections of functional errors through repetition/drills.
I've been enjoying playing with wrist angles since the last time you made a vid about this 😊 It has blown my mind and given me so many different shots and options
@markcrossfield like most “average” golfers my typical shot shape is a fade (or slice) particularly off the tee. I have been trying to implement your advice and “throwing” the club away at the beginning of my downswing. I have seen a significant improvement in swing plane (more neutral or even in-to-out) and ball flight. Thanks for your continued great golf advice. 👍🏼👏
LAG IS NOT MY FRIEND. When I took my lesson with Mark and Coach Matt, a long with fixing my grip, this was a huge focus of what I needed to change in my swing. I went from hitting inconsistent 210 yard fade /slice to the only thing I can hit now is a Draw. My Avg Carry went from 195 to 230. And now that I am training with The Stack, that # keeps going up. As is my consistency. Keep these videos coming Mark! The are the Truth!
Excellent bit of teaching. Took the the throwing the club swing thought to the course this morning and had my best round of the year. Only missed one fairway off the tee and was getting 270-290 yards. Not bad for 60. Thank you for all the great content.
To me, "Lag" is having the club head lagging the hands at impact. I don't care much about what happens before, or what happens after, if the hands lead, face is going to be stable, impact correct and speed up where it needs to be. For the most part. All the time 70% of the time ;-) Anyway, to work on that I don't care about my wrists in anyway other than "keeping them flat-ish" but more on opening pelvis v shoulders v shot line... The main key in all that, for me, is alignment of the body and "line intention" ! And that works all the time, every time!
Spot on Mark - I'm a third year golfer, fell into the "lag trap" when I first started, I'm very strong, could never close the club face, stopped thinking about lag, focused on wrist hing in backswing and squaring club face, went from shooting in the mid 90s to mid 70s in a couple of months, you and Shawn Clement are the best!
This is a revelation. I thought lag was always good and my miss is always a slice. I can't wait to try the other extreme, and I'll end up at a happy middle ground, and a straight drive!
Fantastic explanation. This video might help more golfers than any other video that I've watched. I wish I knew this information when I first started golfing 40+ years ago. Thank you Mark.
Couldn't agree more Mark. It's taken me years to realise this, being a self taught golfer. (Yes i should have had lessons when i started but as a teenager in the mid 80's couldn't really afford them!) I've been playing years with an extended flexion and some days it worked, mostly it didn't as i didn't have the 'Timing' on those days..... Getting rid of that is the single, most important thing I've done to get rid of the horrible slice I've suffered all my life. More so than swing path arguably, which I've played about with for ages with limited effect. Ultimately, it makes very little difference if you're not timing your swing with an extended flexion. Great video!
Right...Lag is not my friend. Ever since I started watching my wrist angle, I stopped slicing into the woods. Thanks Mark for the in depth look at the golf swing!
Couldn’t agree more. In the past , I was trying to generate more lag based on all of the TH-cam videos and, as you rightfully stated, it just created a slice, and a bad one. Then I learned how to move my lower body correctly, changed my grip slightly, and my upper body, arms, wrist and hands moved in the correct position without me having to think about it or do anything unusual.
I watched a previous video where you said to throw the angle away. I followed the advice and it worked very well for me for a bit, then I found another way to ruin my swing. I tend to find a solution to a particular problem, works for week or two then start to exaggerate it so it becomes the next problem. The only answer that really worked for me was a monthly check in with a pro. It means I never get too far removed from a playable swing. Get lessons people, you'll be satisfied.
LAG IS NOT MY FRIEND!!! Couldn’t love this more. Any time I see “lag” I’m the title I run away unless it’s from Mark. Truly, I like to have the face control there and I tend to hit longer drives letting that angle go. I’ve seen people talk about the feeling like you’re hitting it later…but, I take that as time to square the face for impact.
Lag is not my friend -- this is the message I needed to hear.. I've been struggling with some of this a lot (without even realizing that is particularly what I'm trying to do, but this explanation makes me see what my errors are). Will definitely be a thing to take to the range to help my timing and my swing! Thanks Mark, brilliant stuff really
Funny… I’ve recently been trying to create lag. I went from a natural draw to a horrible slice. To the point I hit my driver just twice in my last two rounds, and I regretted it. I wouldn’t have ever guessed this was the cause but it’s so obvious now. Thanks Mark.
Thanks Mark, another awesome video. The most important measurement to explain my lack of distance is the fact that my ball speed is 15-20 mph slower than yours. Back to the lockdown vids, stronger=faster=longer. Thanks for all your help.
This popped back on my radar after being linked in one of your recent videos and it's a lifesaver. First time out focusing on this was able to clean up curvature big time
So logical when you think about your shot shape and the effect of flexion, extension and rotation. Explanation of radial effect on extension was an eye opener.
I've seen hundreds of videos on how to create lag, I've read books, read all the golf magazine tips. The only person I've ever seen who explains the *cause* of lag better than anyone else is Paul Wilson. You can't manipulate lag, it's the loose wrists & powerless arms combined with lower body rotation that will create the lag for us amateurs. Turn the hips fast but be patient with the upper body, keeping the tilt and let the clubhead catch up before the upper body rotates to the finish. If you have loose wrists and a neutral grip, you will be able to release the club without fear.
If you swing it fast with a lot of leg and body torque, loose wrists will lead to hands too far ahead of club head at impact. You’ll have to sacrifice speed to just let the club head catch up.
@@christianhowtolife4961 I'm not talking about swinging fast, just the opposite. The hips should move fast, the upper body will catch up with patience. If you throw a ball, the lower body leads, the upper body catches up and the loose wrist fires the ball.
Mark, actually played with this idea on the range a few months ago. Hit some horrid slices and pull hooks in the process. The amazing result for me is that my 'stock ' driver shot dispersion actually improved immensely. Now i do this on the range when my driver becomes unruly on the course. Good stuff!
Excellent video Mark. This is why you are by far the best YT golf coach. I have never understood lag as keeping in unmanageable agles in your wrists. I have always understood lag to mean clearing your hips early to create space for your shoulders/arms to 'lag behind', thus allowing you to use the large muscle groups in your legs to generate power. BTW I'm still rubbish at golf! ‘LAG IS NOT MY FRIEND’
Love this stuff, Mark! It backs up what I’ve been playing with for a while, and when I was playing more frequently, was getting those feelings to help shape the ball, which is a fantastic feeling.
Great video, getting people to understand why they actually do certain things in their swings and stopping them trying to fix something that isn't actually happening is the hardest thing in golf and why people, in general, stop improving 👍🏻
Excellent video Mark. I've been watching your channel for years and the two lessons you emphasise the most are "wrist angles" and "strike". They have helped me immensely , thanks for sharing!
What a great way to demonstrate what is going on with the swing thoughts and products of match ups. Maybe you should follow this up with the opposite data with irons ??
'Lag is not my friend' - Excellent Mark as this is something I have struggled with for some time and during recent lessons my coach has tried a theme of lag which I found was not helping i.e. losing distance and accuracy and have come away from it now. This vlog has helped my understanding and after taking it to the range and course this has endorsed that feeling and the results have been significantly better - feels like a 'light build experience' many thanks, love the content and knowledge transfer - cheers
LAG is not my friend Love this video Mark I've been struggling with block my drivers for years. Trying to add speed and LAG. Slower I swing the straiter my ball flights. I never worry about wrist angles with my irons only with the driver. Definitely going to put this in my practice routine. Cheers Bruh 👍👍
Mark, I think there is a good place in between "chucking away" your angles and "lag." Holding onto your angles too long and pulling the butt of the club through impact absolutely does cause the push fade or slice. I know because I did it for most of my golfing life. But the alternative is not just throwing away all your angles because you will lose speed doing that. The answer for me has come from learning to fully release the club prior to the ball not by holding onto angles but by releasing the angles relatively late but still prior to the strike. I use a relatively slow start to my swing and then let the club snap through just prior to the strike. I allow the weight of the head and take advantage of gravity by allowing the pendulum to release at the ball rather than after. I got the feel for this initially by watching Fred Couples beautiful swing. He has such a relaxed swing but he fully releases all the angles by the time of impact. He's not pulling on the handle or throwing away angles. He's letting the club go with no apparent effort. In that way he gets great speed by releasing the angles relatively late but still before the ball. This has added great distance for me with a much easier swing. It's almost impossible to believe the speed and ball compression that happens with a slow, effortless swing. My strike vastly improved as well if I keep my hands slightly ahead of the ball and let the club swing down into the back of the ball rather than hanging back and releasing the angles before the ball.
Enlightening video, Mark! Keep it up. There is too much content out there not actually suitable for 95% of amateur golfers. Go and see a pro with a good video/trackman setup and you'll save yourself so much time and effort.
Great video. Monte scheimblum teaches this philosophy I've tried it with driver it's one of the best feeling shots I've hit. Just need to ingrain it more. Definitely easier to turn thru the ball and control face.
What a brilliant video….. never ceases to amaze me how we all get caught going down the rabbit hole… I guess what you’re really saying is “don’t do TH-cam lessons when you can get to a pro that can see your swing and give you fixes for you”
Great video.. I played today, and I now realise I played what you call your neutral swing. I think the problem with lag I had was that the extension you need to put in is the easy bit.. Getting rid of it before impact is very difficult and extension opens the face I believe.
I've been working on creating more lag with my irons this season and it has totally ruined my driver swing as one of the results. Thanks for this video - I now have an idea of what I might be doing wrong.
It's functional for short irons if you want to hit down sharp - but for less loft clubs it just feels slower and pointless, plus you get lots of low right squirter ball flights. The idea is just get shallow (the actual attack angle of the head toward the ground, not some contrived shaft position) enough to get the middle of the face onto the ball...
Spot on. I used to cast a bit when I was first starting, but when I started getting my body into the swing better I got more power and yes lag. But I don't think about it. I just try to get the most swing speed I can, knowing that the clubhead will catch up naturally.
For some time I always thought lag was the concept of getting hips before torso before arms moving in the downswing. Only this week, when searching ways to trigger turn before arms did I find the definition you have described here. Never thought lag was about holding onto wrist angles versus the full arm angle set at the top of backswing.
Very good video on an interesting topic. I am not a slicer of the ball but do release the club too early. Played a couple of times recently trying to hold the angles in my left wrist a little longer with disasterous results - lots of shanks. Letting the angles go early works for me with a driver, when I am trying to hit up on the ball, but I need to figure out what I need to do with my irons, where I need a steeper angle of attack. Will watch the video again. Thanks.
Considering that someone like Sergio who is the archetypical example of “lag” never gets below 90* this really needs to be put to rest. 2D camera angels are ruining this for golfers. Great video as always
I tried the lag ideas years ago and it didn't work. However you recent videos on turning in the swing and weight transfer whilst maintaining the turn and not letting it slide, have given me driving distances I have never seen before.
Love this... I've struggled with a high weak cut/slice/fade for a while out of knowhere, used to hit it pretty much just straight with everything. Couldn't work it out, grip strength etc done nothing, I've got an in to out path etc. But no matter what I tried i couldn't get any more than a baby fade or worse out of it... Tried the feeling of "throwing" the club at the top, its made a big difference. Swing feels more free and easy body movement and distance has improved and I can feel the clubhead swinging around me effortlessly picking up speed if I want a soft shot swing it slower...hard shot, swing it harder, its become so easy to change things. Now if I use a slightly stronger grip I can get a draw/hook weaker grip fade/slice. Its taken away all my swing thoughts, the only thing I feel now is the clubhead swinging around me and I can instantly tell what and when I've done something odd if a shot goes bad...
Another GREAT video, Mark! You’ve been in the zone lately. I holed a blind shot from 80 yards over a tree out of the rough today. Best shot of my life. I’m telling everybody, golfer or not. EagleMyFace. “LAG IS NOT MY FRIEND”
I was under the impression that lag came more from the shallowing of the club rather than trying to hold onto your angles. Being soft in the hands and letting the club drop into the slot and driving the trail elbow towards your hips creates the perception of that "lag" but it's not really coming from the wrist consciously as much as it comes from achieving better positions and better rotation
Excellent video Mark! Complex, yet comprehensive and digestible. I've heard you preach these ideas before and I've applied them to my game with nice results. Namely implementing a little more ulnar deviation in my grip at address. Cheers!
A few years ago I always thought I was flipping which caused the slice but, as per the video, I realised it was the wrist cupping which caused it. The flipping was trying to correct it. Lately my miss seems to be to the right again which is now me trying to gain more distance and holding the lag and subsequently cupping again, will look to stop that straight away.
Amazing you are so far out front of a load of these other UTUBERS Keep it up . I feel less alone in my radical thinking and been ahead of the curve on what clubs help . More head covers please 👨🏻🦳⛳️🏌🏼♂️🇨🇦
Great video Mark. Lag is not my friend! I've stopped slicing my driver as bad once I figured out and started playing with wrist angles. Love your breakdown and the metrics to back it up.
That is a comprehensive critical analysis of ‘lag’ - what is actually happening! I love it when you apply it to the different golfers…. ‘LAG IS NOT MY FRIEND’
This is why I love Mark Crossfield. Speaks truth rather than wanting more views and likes.

I agree completely. I for years tried to create more lag. Finally I just gave up and my swing just does what it does.

I found this out about 6 years ago from the great monte scheinblum. Very good to have it validated! Thanks mark. Total sense as ever👍🏻
This is just Gold Mark, my Tee shots are so much like the second batch, a massive push slice, the lightbulb has just gone on. Cheers

I tend to find a solution to a particular problem, works for week or two then start to exaggerate it so it becomes the next problem. The only answer that really worked for me was a monthly check in with a pro. It means I never get too far removed from a playable swing. Get lessons people, you'll be satisfied.
What surprised me is that the one where you took the angle out you had more wrist extension than your normal swing, yet hit it more left. Great video!
I normally do not post comments. Good or bad. However, this is absolutely amazing and will serve/help so many of us. Thank you very much!
First time out focusing on this was able to clean up curvature big time
Another great video you are 1 of the few on TH-cam actually trying to make golfers better instead of fishing for views
Best video on lag on TH-cam 👍👍. Great video well explained keep it coming
Excellent video Mark. I've been watching your channel for years and the two lessons you emphasise the most are "wrist angles" and "strike". They have helped me immensely , thanks for sharing!
What a brilliant educational video!
What a great way to demonstrate what is going on with the swing thoughts and products of match ups. Maybe you should follow this up with the opposite data with irons ??
Fantastic video and content. Extremely accurate and informative. Thanks Mark
Excellent information, first time I’ve ever seen anyone explain this, fabulous, thanks Mark
LAG is not my friend
Love this video Mark
I've been struggling with block my drivers for years.
Trying to add speed and LAG.
Slower I swing the straiter my ball flights.
I never worry about wrist angles with my irons only with the driver.
Definitely going to put this in my practice routine.
Cheers Bruh 👍👍
Fantastic video. This is something I really need to work on, trying to stop cupping at the top of the back swing and on the way down.
Great video, I watch most of them you do and this is probably the best 👍
Enlightening video, Mark! Keep it up. There is too much content out there not actually suitable for 95% of amateur golfers. Go and see a pro with a good video/trackman setup and you'll save yourself so much time and effort.
Thank you so much Mark for the video I know it’s going to make a huge difference in my game I can’t wait to implement the thinking process
Very surprising as creating "lag" is the most pushed click bait on TH-cam . Very well presented as always 👏
For some time I always thought lag was the concept of getting hips before torso before arms moving in the downswing. Only this week, when searching ways to trigger turn before arms did I find the definition you have described here. Never thought lag was about holding onto wrist angles versus the full arm angle set at the top of backswing.
Really interesting video and a simple explanation of plenty of data. Keep up the great content.
Great video Mark. I hope people watch it and take it to heart.
I tried the lag ideas years ago and it didn't work. However you recent videos on turning in the swing and weight transfer whilst maintaining the turn and not letting it slide, have given me driving distances I have never seen before.
You have many great ones but this is one of the most vital lessons for me at this time! Cheers!
Love this Mark, fantastic information and analysis 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻
This makes perfect sense to me. Fantastic video and one that most amateur golfers could do with watching
You are right, hold on to that thought.
Lag is not my friend……..a great message that was well delivered. Well done Mark 👍
this is the most interesting video about golf swing I have seen so far!
Excellent video Mark! Complex, yet comprehensive and digestible. I've heard you preach these ideas before and I've applied them to my game with nice results. Namely implementing a little more ulnar deviation in my grip at address. Cheers!
Great video and completely understand. Can you do a video on why Sergio goes so flat on his down swing compared with a more "traditional" swing?
A few years ago I always thought I was flipping which caused the slice but, as per the video, I realised it was the wrist cupping which caused it. The flipping was trying to correct it. Lately my miss seems to be to the right again which is now me trying to gain more distance and holding the lag and subsequently cupping again, will look to stop that straight away.
This is awesome for us nerds! Thanks Mark!
Amazing you are so far out front of a load of these other UTUBERS Keep it up . I feel less alone in my radical thinking and been ahead of the curve on what clubs help . More head covers please 👨🏻🦳⛳️🏌🏼♂️🇨🇦
BRILLIANT!!!!! Well done Mark
Great video Mark. Lag is not my friend! I've stopped slicing my driver as bad once I figured out and started playing with wrist angles. Love your breakdown and the metrics to back it up.
Really classy content again Mark.
Such a good, simple way of explaining what is on the surface a very complex sport / movement!
