What I love about the scene is basically weyoun is having the time of his life: he believes himself above the federation and cardassians and is basically watching the animals at the zoo, is playing games and winning money at the same time, and if you take into account that most alcohol is essentially poison then he just had a really strong drink ergo he's having a really good time.
The way that Weyoun chugs that drink down is one of the most underrated moments in this show. Dukat and Sisko are well aware of what the other is capable of, and how to spar and parry with each other. Then Weyoun just swoops in and playfully reminds them both that he, and by extension the Dominion, are not bound by the same rules and limitations at all. What the Cardassians and Federation consider life and death epic struggles amount to little more than a game in the eyes of the Dominion. Even more telling is that when Sisko walks away from the table, it's not Dukat he's watching, it's Weyoun.
Weyoun's lines work even better in context, in that this episode's the first to explain that he's cloned when he dies-but _doesn't_ show his (later) fear of death. It seems like he _might_ actually kill himself for fun.
I love how when Sisko shows up, Weyoun holds up his winnings as if to say "Hey! Look what I won! Isn't this great?" and momentarily forgetting about the cold war. I think the reason he likes games is because he doesn't get to play them in the dominion.
I think the reverse. He *likes* games, meaning he plays them a bunch. I think it's just part of the Vorta nature, maybe before they were turned into what they are. Good thing to leave in a diplomat, too. If your planet has some weird variation of golf all the powerful people play, the diplomat being all in on it would only help relations. Remember as long as you cooperate with the Dominion and follow their rules, life isn't honestly all that bad under them. They rule in a very different way than the Cardassians.

Dukat vs Garak S2 Cardassians S3 Civil Defense S4 The Way of the Warrior S5 In Purgatory's Shadow Having them not square off on so much as a long-distance communication for 2 & 1/2 seasons... About as dumb as Garak, Dukat, Weyoun or Q never appearing in a Star Trek movie.
This entire scene is just such a testament to the writing team from DS9. Every single word said has a purpose and direction. Subtext just drips from every single thing that comes out of the mouths of all three of them, and it really helps to put the burgeoning conflict into perspective. It is frankly sublime. Bravo.
Weyoun: Hohoho, who delightful! Oh the mysterious plots, the subtle innuendos the veiled threats its all so entertaining. But hey, watch this! *drinks poison* Sisko and Dukat: O_O!
@@detectivesnickers6176 they used straight up corn syrup for Kanar...the actor who played Damar in the later seasons had to drink tons of it and the green stuff they always had in those square glasses.
I asked Rene Auberjonois (Odo) on Twitter if a particular scene had been partly ad-libbed and he was clear that they always stuck to word for word accuracy. I wondered the same about this scene but the camera had to cut to Sisko's reaction so it was planned. As good as both Brooks and Alaimo are a showing surprise, I think their reactions would have been different if Combs had done that unscripted based on all the blooper reels I've seen.
Amber Lynn There’s also the fact that if it did kill him his clone would be activated to replace him and it would deliver to the founders the information of a new poison they would need to build an immunity for in their Vorta genetic model.

TheTickRules, perhaps it's a bit like whiskey. Whiskey is a catch-all for many forms of alcohol. It can be made with corn, barley, rye, etc. It can be clear, yellowish, brown.
Fun fact about Vorta. While they are immune to most poisons and toxins, some toxins can essentially get them high for a couple of moments. 2:14 Weyoun was tripping balls.
Apparently this thing about drinking it and Vorta being immune to poison was completely improvised by Combs in this scene. Makes the reactions från the other two actors quite fantastic!
@@IronThreads8-h9p He's like that one of those kids in Highschool who learned about toxic frogs causing hallucinations and immediately spending days licking various ones in the local waterways trying to test them out.
I like how when Sisko snarled "Is that what I'm doing," Dukat had the look of "Why didn't I expect that response from Sisko. I know full well he doesn't scare easily." They all played such wonderful dialogue just with their facial expressions.
Weyoun downing that drink was a Coombs improv. It had to be. Marc Alaimo was shocked enough that someone would drink the prop Kanar... his line "are you insane"... it's about half an octave up from the deep base voice "Dukat" usually uses. Avery Brooks (Sisko) seven years... that has to be one of the rare occasions he was not ready for what he just saw. Pity he didn't interact with Weyoun after the season 5 finale.
Jeffrey Comb's body language is fantastic here. He gently sits down, crosses his legs the second he senses things are about to get tense, and just sits there wide-eyed as two of two most important Alpha Quadrant leaders bicker about petty political drama.
After personally seeing how happy Weyoun was at winning dabo, it’s so strange that Dukat had the gall to ask Weyoun if he was “anhedonic” (incapable of experiencing joy) later on in the series lol.
It makes perfect sense actually, the impression we get is that Vorta are essentially capable of acting however they want to best manipulate the people they're dealing with into giving them what they want. Just because he *looks* like he's enjoying it doesn't mean he's actually feeling anything.
That look on Weyoun's face as Sisko leaves is just priceless. Like a school kid watching one of his classmates takes the walk of shame to the principles office knowing exactly what he did.
Later on, Gul Dukat is getting salty because he's struggling not to feed, while Weyoun is crushing it as MVP. *Gul Dukat:* "I don't know WHY you insist on playing this ridiculous game..." *Weyoun: "I LIKE GAMES."*
Weyoun is by far my most favourite villain in DS9...!!! He is ruthless and completely evil and gives horrible orders to his troops! But he is also a great diplomatic genius and can be very polite and even sympathic...! And he does all of that with a smile on his face...!!! In my opinion Jeffrey Combs did a unique job to play the character of Weyoun...!!! Much much applause from my side for this underrated actor (who also played Brunt (FCA), Shran (Andorian) and of course Dr. Herbert West (Re-Animator)...!!!
For a diplomat turn general of an totalitarian regime, he can still crack a good joke and enjoy life. Kinda makes you wonder what Kim Ill does for fun to make him smile.
@@Escap1st7 He sort of is, thanks to "Treachery, Faith and the Great River." It's pretty obvious if not for his genetic disposition to blind Founder obedience, he'd actually be a really cool guy. But with it, he will be a monster if that'll further Dominion goals.
This is one of Avery Brooks's top 10 scenes as Benjamin Sisko. I always loved when he pulled power moves, but one of my favorite shots in the entire series is his reaction to Weyoun drinking the poison, mainly because it's so weird to see him so shocked at anything so unexpected.
I want to see a drinking contest between Emotion Chip Data and Weyoun. Weyoun: Oh my, that is QUITE toxic! Data: Ooooh YES! I HATE this! It is REVOLTING!
Just rewatched this episode the other day and this one scene made me glad I did. Jeffrey Combs is excellent here. I love the little sideways look at the end as if he's hoping Dukat will provide him with some more entertainment.
Fun fact; that was an improv moment. Weyoun's actor wasn't supposed to drink that, but he did it anyway to get Weyoun's point about politics across. That drink, I guess, was corn starch syrup, so that was Jeffrey Combs' real reaction to its taste. As was Dukats actor saying 'are you insane' because that's what the real Dukat would say.
Weyoun: That's one spicy bottle of sauce. Dukat: The fuck? Do you have any idea what that poison DOES? Weyoun: Does nothing for me. Tastes like shit though.
Casually drinking poison just so that you can childishly remind people at the table not to fuck with you 🤣🤣 Brooks and Alaimo almost appeared to break character for a second and unite in a complete WTAF moment, all the while we see Coombes giggle his way through the delivery 👍🏻👍🏻
I need to make a Buzzfeed list of "X number of times Weyoun was my spirit animal." 12. "When your friends get in a public argument." *GIF of Weyoun's face at the end of the video*
Slithery as the Weyouns were, they were quite entertaining. Coombs is awesome. I've said on other posts, Shran the Andorian was a boss on ST:ENT. Also: Don't Eff with the Sisko.
Snodge Kat Underrated, yes. Undercast, HAH! To count, Coombs has been Brunt (FCA), A Ferengi on Enterprise, an alien that wanted holo-porn of Kira, Weyoun of course, and an alien in Voyager that forced Seven of Nine to fight in a holographic cage match. He probably has the most roles out of any actor that was in Star Trek.
Shran was just an Angry Weyoun, not much effort was put in by Combs to make the character sound any differen't to Weyoun. Atleast he put more effort into making Brunt sound differen't, even after Weyoun was introduyced the season after Brunt was.
Always loved how Weyoun can go from charming, friendly and cheerful to menacing and outright terrifying in the same conversation. Speaks to the talent of Jeffrey Combs. Also loved him as Liquidator Brunt, FCA.
I find the idea of Weyoun drinking it, doing that diplomat joke and dying funny... even more so just the idea of the aftermath. "Does this count as assassination or suicide or... what?"

Unscripted.
LOVED IT!!!
Cracks me up everytime
The verbal wars between Dukat and Sisko are some of the best dialogue ever written
and yet so easily shut down by Weyoun. A great scene
The conversations between Dukat and Weyoun were gold too.
You gotta check out Londo and G'kar.
Dukat vs Garak
S2 Cardassians
S3 Civil Defense
S4 The Way of the Warrior
S5 In Purgatory's Shadow
Having them not square off on so much as a long-distance communication for 2 & 1/2 seasons...
Bravo.
Actually the part where weyoun drinks is improvisation.
But yeah for the rest i agree.
Weyoun: Hohoho, who delightful! Oh the mysterious plots, the subtle innuendos the veiled threats its all so entertaining. But hey, watch this!
*drinks poison*
Sisko and Dukat: O_O!
Yeah, I love how, even though Sisko and Dukat hated each other so much, their reaction to that was exactly the same! :D
Sisko's face was priceless.
I LOVE the hohoooo the look of glee on his face!
Weyoun: Are you going to finish that? Oh right (proceeds to chug down the rest of the bottle).
yeah then falls backwards off his chair haha
That gobsmacked "Whaa--" and look on Dukat's face when Weyoun drinks the kanar is so natural I wonder how much of it was even scripted.
I'd think all of it. Marc Alaimo is a masterful actor.
It would be so funny if that was adlibbed and Vorta poison immunity was because of an outtake they left in.
According to Casey Biggs, he said in an interview that the stuff that they used for Kanar tasted really bad
Y'know, even if he is part of an oppressive quadrant-spanning empire, Weyoun's just adorable!
I love how he says *most* forms of poison-means he was still taking a risk by drinking that ;-).
He probably knew what poison it was and knew he was immune to it.
@@the_synack Well, Sisko named the posion in this very scene. So, no risk here.
@@Drosophilax you stole my comment :(
Amber Lynn There’s also the fact that if it did kill him his clone would be activated to replace him and it would deliver to the founders the information of a new poison they would need to build an immunity for in their Vorta genetic model.
well caffeine is a powerful insecticide, so should be a poison to cardasians. If somebody said that a bottle had enough caffeine to kill 12 cardasians I might be tempted to try it too. :D
The line between poison and narcotic can sometimes be fuzzy.
Dukat: "Are you INSANE?!?!?"
Weyon: "No, but YAHOO!!! I'M CUCKOO FOR COCOA PUFFS!!! CUCKOO FOR COCOA PUFFS!!!"
Five seconds later, Weyoun is right back at it "DABO! HA!HAHEHE!"
so true.;.lol....Jeffrey Combs is such a GREAT actor!!!
Weyoun's expression at the end is just like, "OOOOOOH BUSTED."
I love how Weyoun is always so calm and reserved most of the time, but here he's so giddy like a kid. You can tell that Jeffrey Combs was having fun.
You could not pull this prank with Damar. He would drink the kanar before Sisko is finished offering it.
1:43 Such good acting! That's got to be one of the few times that Sisko's been genuinely flabbergasted. 😆
That was actually an improv moment because Jeffrey Combs wasn't supposed to drink that.
My first thought
"That Kanar looks a lot like Jagermeister"
When Weyoun says "that's quite toxic, isn't it?"
"Yep, that's Jagermeister, alright"
Yeager bombs for everyone
Damn it, now I'm craving a glass of jaegermeister but I'm broke for the next two weeks. :D
I mean, Jaegermeister DID debut in Nazi Germany, and the Cardassians being space Nazis and all...
TheTickRules, perhaps it's a bit like whiskey. Whiskey is a catch-all for many forms of alcohol. It can be made with corn, barley, rye, etc. It can be clear, yellowish, brown.
@@thetickrules I know, Garak drank a orange kind of drink, which they called kanar.
Fun fact about Vorta. While they are immune to most poisons and toxins, some toxins can essentially get them high for a couple of moments.
2:14 Weyoun was tripping balls.
That gave me a whole new point of view! Hahahahaha XD
Apparently this thing about drinking it and Vorta being immune to poison was completely improvised by Combs in this scene. Makes the reactions från the other two actors quite fantastic!
haha, i just noticed that. good catch, he was feeling pretty good, I think haha.
If I was immune to MOST forms of poison, I still wouldn't test them out 🤣
@@IronThreads8-h9p He's like that one of those kids in Highschool who learned about toxic frogs causing hallucinations and immediately spending days licking various ones in the local waterways trying to test them out.
I like how when Sisko snarled "Is that what I'm doing," Dukat had the look of "Why didn't I expect that response from Sisko. I know full well he doesn't scare easily." They all played such wonderful dialogue just with their facial expressions.
Bad luck Weyoun: Was genetically programmed to withstand most toxic poisons however their necks are as weak as a pair of twigs.
lol
maybe he should talk to Worf about a chiropractor :P
Well obviously. They were genetically designed to be diplomats and administrators. The Jem-Hadar were the ones with the strong necks.
Let's say they did have stronger necks to better survive neck snapping, Weyoun still has an instant kill switch hidden in it.
The lizard guys had the genes for strength.
1:53 - "Vorta are immune to most forms of poison! ... erk.. but not this one it seems... Tell my replacement... Not to drink Cardassian poison..."
1:40 Dukat and Sisko's faces are priceless. Also I like to imagine Weyoun kept and drank the rest afterwards
he enjoys the different textures... and poisons
Weyoun was so much fun here. I think he enjoyed vexing Dukat.
Watching this as a kid, I never realised how clever Sisko was in his wording, getting Dukat to implicitly admit to trying to poison Ghemour.
Enough to kill a dozen kardashians? Count me in!
where can we get some kanar? we got about a dozen or more kartrashians as customers for quark's special kanar.
@Nicolas Johnson NO! i wrote KARTRASHIANS and i meant KARTRASHIANS and through in bruce jenner also while you are at it
Kim Cardassian?
@@oldtwinsna8347 no KARTRASHIANS !! learn to read!
Oh man jeffrey combs laugh is priceless. Its delivered just perfect. And he guzzles down the kanar with vrax poison init. Brilliant.
I think out of all his many ST characters, Weyoun MUST have been Jeffrey Combs's favorite. How could he not be? Look how much FUN he was having! ^_^
nfinn42 He actually mentioned in an interview that Weyoun was his favourite :D
Along with "poor eyesight, good ears" this is one of Weyoun's best scenes.
Jeffrey Combs is a legend.
01:46
Weyoun's first experience with LoL community.
+GeneralProfessor 1:51 Dukat's reaction to Weyoun exposing himself to the LoL community to begin with.
Looks my face after I brush my teeth and drink some lemonade
GeneralProfessor And the second, third, fourth...
Later on, Gul Dukat is getting salty because he's struggling not to feed, while Weyoun is crushing it as MVP.
*Gul Dukat:* "I don't know WHY you insist on playing this ridiculous game..."
*Weyoun: "I LIKE GAMES."*
LMAO
"I'm not particularly thirsty right now."
*holds up drink*
The drink he already has is _why_ he isn’t thirsty.
He is _not_ sympathetic.
For a diplomat turn general of an totalitarian regime, he can still crack a good joke and enjoy life. Kinda makes you wonder what Kim Ill does for fun to make him smile.
I don't think Weyoun is actually evil. I think he falls more along the Amoral spectrum.
@@Escap1st7 He sort of is, thanks to "Treachery, Faith and the Great River." It's pretty obvious if not for his genetic disposition to blind Founder obedience, he'd actually be a really cool guy. But with it, he will be a monster if that'll further Dominion goals.
And lets not forget how he is constantly sucking up to the founders.
I love their reactions when he drinks it.
Sisko had the funniest reaction!!!!LMAO, Oh my, that is quite toxic
I don't think he's ever looked so stunned
This is one of Avery Brooks's top 10 scenes as Benjamin Sisko. I always loved when he pulled power moves, but one of my favorite shots in the entire series is his reaction to Weyoun drinking the poison, mainly because it's so weird to see him so shocked at anything so unexpected.
"Is that what I'm doing?" I love Brook's delivery.
I want to see a drinking contest between Emotion Chip Data and Weyoun.
Weyoun: Oh my, that is QUITE toxic!
Data: Ooooh YES! I HATE this! It is REVOLTING!
More?
@@tachyontee3877 "Please!"
I JUST finished rewatching this series a few months ago, which was my third time...watching this makes me want to rewatch the whole series again
Just rewatched this episode the other day and this one scene made me glad I did. Jeffrey Combs is excellent here. I love the little sideways look at the end as if he's hoping Dukat will provide him with some more entertainment.
That little "Wha?" Dukat makes. His brain temporarily freezes as it can't comprehend what the eyes are seeing.
DS9 was such a great show. So many outstanding scenes like this.
Dukat: Are you insane??
Weyoun: No, but you'll be soon enough
Dukat: What?
Weyoun: What?
Love the shock on both Sisko and Dukat when Weyoun drinks it, lol.
Yes I bet Vorta are immune to most forms of poison....except Neelix's "better than coffee" substitute :P LOL
the look on weyoun's face at the end...priceless...
I do love the looks of absolute shock of them watching him drink it. Like watching a train wreck, as they say.
Weyoun is a delight in this scene.
Sisko: "Hey is this Kanar, or poison?"
Weyoun: *grabs and drinks all of it* "It's poison."
Weyoun: That's one spicy bottle of sauce.
Dukat: The fuck? Do you have any idea what that poison DOES?
Weyoun: Does nothing for me. Tastes like shit though.
You know how this scene would have been have funnier if Wyoun just dropped dead a few seconds after this scene
Sisko and dukats face when weyoun drinks the poison ,😂😂😂
One of my very favourite scenes, three amazing actors playing wonderful characters at the top of their game!
Tbh I was expecting Weyoun to actually die there and just be replaced by another a few episodes later.
Casually drinking poison just so that you can childishly remind people at the table not to fuck with you 🤣🤣
Brooks and Alaimo almost appeared to break character for a second and unite in a complete WTAF moment, all the while we see Coombes giggle his way through the delivery 👍🏻👍🏻
I need to make a Buzzfeed list of "X number of times Weyoun was my spirit animal."
12. "When your friends get in a public argument." *GIF of Weyoun's face at the end of the video*
Jeffrey, you absolute boss! This is one of my favourite scenes of all time.
"Oh we are immune to most forms of poison."
"Um thats fine, but this was actually a highly corrosive ac--- yup, down he goes."
I remember when i first saw this on TV "Are you insane?!" , I laughed out loud 😀
Weyoun's expressions! He looks like a child caught between two parents arguing.
one of the best scenes in the entire series XD i just love the actor of weyoun :D
Weyoun's reaction at 0:14 is priceless.
Ada Bee : Same! Makes me laugh every time! 😂😂😂
Thank you! I never noticed this before.
Dukat's little "wha..." when Weyoun starts drinking is hilarious.
The amount of seratonin I get from Weyoun shouting “Dabo!” n proceeding to laugh and say “I like games” is unparalleled
I love Weyoun 5 in this scene, I like how each of the Weyoun have subtly different personalities.
Haha this makes me think Weyoun would be epic company on a night out.
If you have something he wants, he'd be the universes best wingman. lol
Avery Brooks' "I insist," Line delivery is underrated. So good. It really set the tone.
Slithery as the Weyouns were, they were quite entertaining. Coombs is awesome. I've said on other posts, Shran the Andorian was a boss on ST:ENT. Also: Don't Eff with the Sisko.
YES so true. Jeffery Coombs is BEYOND underrated and undercast
Snodge Kat
Underrated, yes.
Lost How can you leave out Shran!
James Martin
Whoops! I meant to include Shran as well.
Shran was just an Angry Weyoun, not much effort was put in by Combs to make the character sound any differen't to Weyoun.
Atleast he put more effort into making Brunt sound differen't, even after Weyoun was introduyced the season after Brunt was.
The best written, and best acted Trek show ever. No contest.
I love that little 'wuh?' sound Dukat makes.
Always loved how Weyoun can go from charming, friendly and cheerful to menacing and outright terrifying in the same conversation. Speaks to the talent of Jeffrey Combs. Also loved him as Liquidator Brunt, FCA.
I like Dukat's and Cisco's shared expressions of surprise when Weyoun drinks the poison.
SISKO!
You may be happy, but you will never be Weyoun-playing-dabo happy. 😅
I find the idea of Weyoun drinking it, doing that diplomat joke and dying funny... even more so just the idea of the aftermath. "Does this count as assassination or suicide or... what?"
When Dukat asks if you're crazy you know you're crazy
