  • Looking to for ACCESSORIES for your KTM 1290 Super Adventure S or R model? In this video I am presenting you my TOP ACCESSORIES with long term experience (2 years and 35.000 km for most of them).
    Not all the accessories are specific to KTM or the 1290 Super Adventure S modell - if you are riding a different brand or bike this may still be of value to you.
    Here is the list of item reviewed:
    1: GIVI D7706S Windscreen. The taller version is the D7706ST - probably better for riders taller than 190 cm
    2: SW-Motech EVO Fog Lights Kit LED approx. 350,- Euros
    3: GPS Navigation / BMW Navigator & Cradle
    4: Schaal CNC - GPS Navigation Mount - starts at 100,- Euros ships worldwide
    5: Touratech iBracket (various sizes) - approx 120,- Euros + DIY wireless charger
    Unfortunately not a 100% recommendation anymore as the mine does not work properly anymore after 18 months of use
    Wirelss Charger - take one with IP67 rating or better - diameter of charing pad should be approx. 7cm
    6: Chain Oiler - CLS EVO Tour with Control Display approx. 300,- Euros
    7: Seat - KTM Powerpart ERGO Seat
    8: Akrapovic Slip-On Exhaust - approx. 975,- Euros
    9: V-Trec Brake & Clutch Levers - approx. 120,- Euros
    10: Crash Bars - KTM Powerparts - approx. 280,- Euros
    11: Front & Rear Axle Sliders - SW-Motech
    Bike: KTM 1290 Super Adventure S

      Thank you very much Steve. I actually considered the Diavel (the normal one) for short while - even took her for a full day test ride. Really loved the engine and power delivery and love the bad ass design. The second test bike was the Multistrada anf then the 1200 GS - I went for the BMW at the time and switched to KTM 2 years later. Now I have the versatility of an adventure bike with the power of the Ducati 😉

    great vlog with helpful information. I have bought the Givi smoked screen for my 1290sas on your recommendation and has made a really big difference far less wind buffeting and cut down noise👌.
    Note for you I just installed a powerbronze beak which is quite subtle and finished the look of the front of the bike off really well, not really functional but looks great.

      @@MotoVibes Right on, man. I'm curious as to your specific routine chain maintenance. I found the OEM chain stretched REALLY fast on mine and I'd like your input.

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK - this is going to be a long one 😉 I did not have to adjust the original chain myself in between tire changes - I assume the shop did after tire replacements. I changed the chain and sprockets after about 35,000 km after my last big trip to France. On my way home (long stretch of Autobahn - 30C and 200 km/h) I did not notice that my chain oiler nozzle was plugged up with dirt and did not lube the chain. I noticed 200 km from home and it was not a pretty picture 😬. Chain was sagging and there were rust particles all over the rim 😠
      A good reason for a full chain service (should have done a video on this) once I got home.
      Long intro - but that is why I am taking extra care now to keep the chain and rear sprocket clean 😎
      It would have been a disaster had this happend a few days earlier on my tour.
      Since I am using a chain oiler the oil that gets on the chain does not have any adhesives (unlike the oil from chain lube sprays) - it is just plain old chain saw oil. Most times a little bit of water to wash of the dirt works fine. Every so often I use a litte bit of chain cleaner (last time 2 weeks ago), let is soak, rub of the dirt with a cloth and rinse with clean water - crank up the chain oiler for the next 15 min of riding and the chain is good to go.
      So, my plan is to not let the chain (and rear sprocket - the oil gets dropped on the sprocket and the centrifugal forces push the oil onto the chain) get too dirty in the first place - I did not clean the chain/sprocket before I went on my almost 8000 km France trip and ended up messing up the chain. 😬
      Soo - yes - sometimes I miss the shaft drive of the BMW GS I owned before the KTM 😂

  • @bigal5895
    @bigal5895 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great vid! chain oilers are a great idea, I have a Scottoiler x system fitted to my Speed Triple RS , it hooks up to the battery so no vacuum connection, and main reservoir has an accelerometer fitted in it, so the oiler only pumps when the bike is moving.

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice vlog and beautiful country. The first thing I changed out on my 1290 SAR were the foot pegs. My size 13 boot didn't fit on those narrow pegs very well so I put on a set of Rally pegs . Rox bar risers didn't hurt either plus they look good.

    The scenery is fantastic, the accessories are sound choices, your English is amazing. Recently bought one of these bikes and I agree that the seat is hard, it annoys me that most bike manufacturers offer (at great expense) a ‘comfort seat’ - a comfortable seat should be standard issue, especially on this type of bike. Enjoyed your video thank you.

    • @MotoVibes

      I love adventure bikes. I have a 2005 Yamaha FJR1300 and recently sold my 1999 Yamaha R1 because I got too tired riding it. I have had three adventure bikes, a 2003 V-Strom, a 2015 Multistrada and have just bought a 2020 KTM 1290SAS. I put far more miles on the adventure bikes than the others because they are just as fast and much easier to ride. I planned to sell the FJR when I got the Multistrada, but this turned out to be a huge disappointment: ridiculous throttle maps, awful suspension and frequent costly repairs. If the SAS works out, I will sell the FJR.

    Another good video. Interested to know why you chose the super adventure s over the Super duke GT - I am assuming off road capability ? I can see you having some great fun on the SD GT !

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was not the offroad capabilities so much at the time even through I liked the longer suspension travel of the Super Adventure S which I was used to coming from the BMW R 1200 GS - it just opens up other roads that would otherwise be to uncomfortable on a bike like the SD GT . I did look at the Super Duke GT but the Super Adventure won because of the versatility and it already had the full LED light and the display etc. - The Super Duke GT is a great bike though 😎

    Nice video! I have a BMW R1200 GS and went to the French Alps this summer with an couple of friends. One of them also rides a 1290 S. The Beamer is a great bike, but once I rode that KTM...waauw..that was amazing! That torque, that VTwin engine is superb.. I guess I'm gonna change bike for next summer :) I like the black and grey colors for 2020..it's just a matter of convincing my other side of the bed :) , first gonna testride the Super Duke GT and compare it with the Super Adventure and decide which one it will be..do you have any experience with the GT? thanks for the great scenery, reminds me of our trip..greetings from Belgium

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey - sorry for the late response and thank you for your comment. I have ridden the 1290 Super Duke R but not the GT version. Somehow I already bought into the ADV bike category as I owned a BMW R 1200 GS before getting the KTM 1290 SAS. Also at the time the GT was not as advanced as the SAS - no LED headlight and LED display etc. I guess the choice is a bit harder now. I would love to test ride a current GT model and see how it compares to the SAS - I guess you cannot go really wrong with either - just go what feels right to you ;-) cheers mate!

      I am pretty certain the there have been no changes to the windshield mount between 2017-2020. The only thing that was update were the graphics in 2019 but everything else remained the same. As for the fog lamps - yes, I am still running the same SWMotech fog lamps - however, I broke one of them during an offroad training and bought a new set of fog lights and I had a warranty replacement due to water built-up in the lights.

    I installed Rigid dss and hex ezcan. The Dss has 3 angled additional lights on the side that increase tremendously lateral visibility. Add to that the strobe capability of the additional lights, actuated by the push to pass button (high beam) or the horn, and you have a visibility at intersections second only to police cars and ambulances!
    Rigid Dss pro is the sh..t.

      Thank you. Like I said in the Video the smaller size - especially for the control unit that goes the steering bar but also the rest was one big reason- you cannot see the chain oiler at all. Only the small tip that hits the rear sprocket. Also it uses less oil- 100ml will last almost 10,000 km. Last but not least it is a small one man show company with a great product- it nice to know that this supports a small business 😉

    Hey there, thanks for the detailed review. A question if I may; is the mounting of BMW Nav V straight forward? Can one use the standard plugs (for power) that comes with the navigator? Any caveats or things to think about? Bought a 2019 1290SAS last year and, since like you I've got a BMW history, been thinking about buying a used NAV V, with the cradle as you have, thanks.

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Knut - the installation is really simple - it will not work with the standard plugs but the cradle just needs power hookup (2 wires) which you can get from behind the headlight on the KTM. If you are lucky your can reach them when you remove the phone mount on the right - they are located between the steering stem and the headlight. I am using the "switched" plus connector.
      If not you need to remove the headlight - which is no big deal just take a bit longer - if you have the bike in your garage turn on the headlight and mark how the light is adjusted on the wall (with tape etc.). This makes it easier to get the proper headlight level once you put the headlight back on again ;-)
      I hope this helps

    Nice video ans thanks for your big test. About the windscreen, are you correctly protected on your helmet and shoulders (low and high position) ?I am 1m90 and with the OEM it is quite tired with a long travel. Too many turbulences on the top of my helmet on high position. I’m not enjoy to take ST’s because really huge. I think the S’s is the good compromise to have protection and keep a sportive allure. Thanks in advance for your answer.

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At 190 cm the small screen may just work for you but you could just be a bit too tall - I am 180 cm and I ride the screen in the lowest settinh - and the protection is much better than the stock windscreen - both in heigt and width. I hardly use a higher setting -sometimes on the Autobahn - so there is extra room for a taller rider but at 190 cm you may just be too tall.
      I agree with ST being too tall - that just looks goofy. Maybe you just have to order it and give it try - worst thing is it does not work and then you resell it. I hope this helps

    Mate this is great! Super helpful! got 2 questions:
    How often do you clean the chain? (love to see a video about this)
    How much do you charge your battery during winter? do you keep it always plugged in? I can't keep it plugged in because its parked in a public garage (no plug nearby), so i literally have to move the bike next to a plug and then take it back. What if i do it once a month? will the battery resist?
    Thanks

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for you nice comment! I still trying to figure out a regular cleaning cycle but lately it seems better to clean it more often - then it is also easier to do - the oil from the chain oiler is basically chain saw oil and it does have the adhesives that chain lube contains. This means you can wash of most dirt with just some water and then crank up the oiler for the next few KM to get the chain oiled again.
      As for the battery - I ride all year and do not remove the battery or charge is separatly - I do not ride much in the winter but the bike never sits longer than 2 months until is moved again

      The headlight guard woud have been nice on my last offroad training where I chipped of part of the paint from the middle part (the heat sink between the lights). I would probably go with KTM PowerParts in this case as it is clear plastic and would protect from small rock chips better than a metal screen.

    Hello MotoVibes very interesting video. I'll have soon a 1290 Super Adventure S and I'm very interested on the GPS cradle and I have few questions if you can answer them.
    1) The left-hand site buttons works even if you don't connect the proprietary BMW connector? I mean, if these buttons are somehow connected with the three cables of the BMW connector could be very interesting for something I have in mind 😎

      Joan - thank you for the kind words. I am happy to anwer your questions:
      1) Yes - they do work - the cradle only has a power connector and the buttons of the cradle feed directly into the Navigator - aside from the fact that I already own the Navigator V this is actually a really useful feature that I use a lot when I am using my navigation system while I am riding
      2) No, I have the navigation system in the cradle most of the time - also they are gold platted and will not corrode.
      3) It should - they all use the same connectors but I have not tried it yet. It is very likely that it will work.

      August is a bit crowded but if you go earlier or later in the season it gets a bit better. I absolutely need a GPS - I do not like to pull over and try to find my way on a map. Also I like to get as much riding in a day as I can as I only get so many days in a year that I can ride - if you ride 500 km in the alps it helps if you have planned out your route beforehand - but everyone is different - this is how I do it ;-)

    Hi and thanks for your videos, like them and your riding a lot. Did you maybe forget the quickshifter+ on your list? :-) Two questions, I would really appreciate an answer from you because I absolutely trust you in being honest: I'm just deciding on what will be my next bike. I ride a 1290 Superduke R since 2014, but because of back problems after an accident I have to look for something more comfortable. My KTM dealer made me a VERY good offer on a brand new 2019 1290 SAS with pp seat, Akra, Quickshifter+. BUT I'm afraid of two things: That the suspension will not be comfortable enough in the long run (have done a short test ride in the rain but was unable to tell if the thing is better than my "old" SDR). And second: Many people are complaining that the bike will get unbelieveble hot in summer. That would be a dealbreaker for me. Whats your experience with that? Thank you so much for an answer, that really would help me . Best, Michael

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your nice comment Michael! Yes indeed - I forgot the quick shifter 😉 an absolut must have on this bike.
      I can fully relate to the back pain issue - I have had my fair share of back pain to the point where I am completly out of order. The last time was in June of this year - always my biggest fear when going on a long tour.
      Now everyone's isse with their back can be quite different but this is what works for me: I ride standing up A LOT when on long tours - I find that beeing too static on the bike is the worst for my back. Everytime I cruise through a small town I make sure I get out of the seat. On the Autobahn I use the construction zones (slower speed) to ride standing up. Of course a nice speed run up a mountain pass works well too when you have move around on the bike 😜
      Now with that beeing said - the Super Adventure (like most adventure bikes) are designed to be ridden standing up for a long time. So unlike on your Super Duke R ridding in the standing position is actually very comfortable.
      As for the supension - this is much less of an issue for me than "keeping active" on the bike - I ride in the stiffes sport mode setting for 90% of the time.
      As for the heat from the engine - yes, there is some at 35°C - nothing compared to my old air-cooled Harley Davidson 😂 During our August tour we had 35°C weather quite a lot - the engine heat was not really the issue - I was just hot from all the gear I was wearing - once you get moving it fixed both issue - engine heat and you get a nice breeze to stay cooler.
      My humble advice: GO FOR IT! This is too good of a hobby to just give it up like that. Worst case is that it does not pan out and then you can always sell the bike again.
      I hope this helps - cheers!

I still have my Mitas knobbies mounted so max speed is 190 km/h anyway. Shorter distances of 150 km on smaller roads up to 120 km/h were fine with the smaller screen. So that's out then the Beemer well its like good old pair of slippers cant go wrong but build quality i going south weight is gaining and I'm personally a little bored with them there are the most comfy ADV bike for sure and you can wring the 1250s neck and it will make you smile but after 11 GS GSA's on the bounce I'm ready for a probably daft change!
      The 1290 we rode was with full tech pack e.g. quick shift and all the bells and whistles. Trouble was as we got onto the bikes we soon found out the dealer had not enabled any of the tech packs !!! Very reckon annoying they say its done after first service ? So we carried on like you do the first thing a BMW rider like me will notice i the bars are a little narrower and the front to you arms is shorter, but not in a bad way i felt th amid pegs were to high for my 29" legs I'm 6feet 1 inch tall fat and recovering a leg industry so it was important to feel good on the bike. We stoped and took the seat off whilst feeling up which on turning into the forecourt i felt the bike was far more agile on slow turn than the BMW anyway the seat is a bit crap how it works on two round pin hangers but i guess when you have set the front seat its on ok and works good. WE took the opportunity to look round under the seat and there was few wires etc with spade connectors :-( bit cheap but the chassis was good chromium molybdenum steel powder coated and was real nice.The subframe is alloy and also powder coated.Under the passenger seat there is plenty of room for stuff sack waterproofs etc or a PMR radio etc.Continuing on with our ride we went a blast round some B rounds A roads back lanes and the V Twin was grand 138nm and 160bh whats not to like :-) The big difference for me over the Ducati v4s is that although if you want to flick into sports mode and gas it which it enjoys you can also ride it chilled and nosey over the countryside hedgerows etc where for me the v4 Duke was unable to do that without you having to work hard with your mindset and wrists and gear control tried sorts mode and street modes messed with the thousands f suspension settings but the one i wanted to try was not turned on anti dive! the seat after adjustment made the pegs far better for me and i was happy with the riding position you have to open you legs a little wider she says... to accommodate the wider tank but again you get used to it very quickly. Now the TFT i great its 7" when you move it down into your eye line you can work with it easy I'm dyslectic but liked the pictures and the screen is way more less cluttered than the MS V4s.The Windscreen is easy to move up and down I thought there was more air around my mid head area but nothing to worry about even at warp speeds! The gearbox and clutch were both good and my dicky leg was working good would have been better with quick shift like I'm used too but we had to be old school. After swapping bikes I wanted to try the bike on slow moves its very agile for sure i pushed it around on a car park to see how it would feel in that situation and it every good also when you put it on the main stand its the easiest bike ever! I struggled to work out how to have the halo headlight on and the main beam maybe it was operator error.
      Re Brakes i don't think it see maybe the bikes are both to new but the M50 on the Ducati was very poor imho and too was the KTM Brembo rear brake was like GS crap and no feel the front brakes we good but you had to pull a lot of air before nay brake bite came, unlike the HAYES on the 1250 which I personally like a lot.When you think new bikes and brakes will come to you? Why then was the 890 back brake fantastic! as was the front.That bike had no mile son it was straight out of the box! Who knows? Re switchgear the only thing we struggled with was the indicators when you turn they should self cancel after 10 flashes ? but if you try and cancel them it's hard as the turn knob has to be pressed a certain way but again guess its something you get used to. The plastics in some area are better than the BMW and in some are the same the rear grab rails are made from some ABS style plastic same as the Austrian Glock pistols use.The rear foot peg hangers can be removed easy if like myself you don't carry pillions.The rear end Mmm is very tidy unlike the whale of a Ducati v4 the overall ugliness of th eKTM has sort of grown on me. I like its agility it's far more nimble than the Beemer and little less engine braking than the v4s which trust me has more than a GS! The tyres what KTM have shod which no feckers ever here'd off were great after a good spirited ride they were hot and sticky don't know about wet! but the profile and feel of the tyre was good .Regarding th told problem of hot bools and legs on the 1290 the new split rads and re worked venting did seem to work it was not a hot day 12c at best I could only feel a tad of warmth on my left leg but again don't think you would worry about it.Another point as I've not had a chain driven bike for over 10 years again the Ducati was easy to get chain slap and some strange noises maybe the demo bike needed adjustment but it was rather strange particularly at lower speeds, where as the KTM never gave me or Mick that slap judder knock bush bosh bash sound. In fact we rode it at a junction setting off in 3rd and 4th gear no probs we rolled the KTM in different gears and it only chugged in 6th gear one time. The KTM is more loose than the BMW and for sure not as refined but I had a smile on my face twist the throttle and its a new adventure and the whole ride can offer little more character and you will need a little more of you riding skills to enjoy it in full.
      My verdict is that I will be buying one and after specking it up with the AKRA top box tech pack some cnc bits front spots etc its around the £19.5k mark it may be a mistake it may be the best change iv done but you only live once so I'm having change and see how it go's.
      I may need hellion how to deal with chain and lubes etc ...... Bottom Line you pay your money and make your choice ...

      Derek - thank you for sharing your experienced with all these bikes with us. I can very much relate to everything you have experienced and said - you should be doing bike reviews mate! ;-)
      The Beemer beeing an old comfy pair of slippers - absolutely nailed it. As for the 890 - I should be riding one next week in offroad conditions - this will be the first time on the 790/890 mid class KTM for me. I am curious what all the rave is about - I am sure it will be great for offroad riding but then I also do a lot of onroad / fast riding / long distance travel that is why the 1290 will suit me better for now.
      I also totally agree with your assessment on brakes. I experienced the BMW brakes on the XR model and they are superior to my KTM 1290 SAS brakes in every respect.
      As for the 1290 SAS: The stock seat on mine is crap - changed it immediately to the powerparts touring seat - much better long distance comfort ( I have not ridden the new one but test sat on one - it is still too hard for me). As for the chain lube issue - also something I had to deal with after being spoiled with a shaft drive / belt drive before. An automatic chain oiler will take a good part of regular maintenance to an acceptable level (one of my recent videos is on the CLS chain oiler if you are interested) OR you try Regina's new maintenance free chain (Regina HPE) - no lubrication or re-tensioning - at least that is what they promise. BMW offers theses chains as optional add-on since last year - now you can buy them for other motorcycles. I just bought one - it is sitting here ready to get installed. I am curious if that actually will be maintenance free as promised. Would be a dream come true. Chain alone cost me 265,- Euros - so 165,- more than a good quality 525 chain.
      Like the attitude - you only live once - see if you like the adventure beast - if not you can always sell it and trade it in for a an old pair of slippers ;-)

      @@MotoVibes great I’m sure the 890 will perform for you. Could I ask a favour can you email me the link for the cnc sat nav bracket you bought in Germany 🇩🇪 derekcumbers@btinternet.com also,there seems to be a issue with the KTM new seats as they have removed them from the configurator they are slipping back to low setting and not staying in the high position. I said the seat adjuster was shit.

      I like the GIVI better because it is a bit wider and not as tall. I have a small racing screen from Puig that I like - it has been mounted for the past year now
