Really great video!! Comparing to the opposite of your style words (or potential words) is such a good idea! I already had my 3 words, so I tried comparing them to their opposites and you're right, I really dislike the opposites, so it just confirmed that I'm on the right track! It did also make me realize though that I want to make my aspirational word even more specific. It was feminine, but I realized that feminine can encompass a lot of different looks like romantic, sexy, glamorous, girly, etc.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing your experience! Feminine is a good starting point but as you say, can mean so many things. What word did you choose instead of feminine?
I’ve been intrigued by the three words thing and have bern trying to use the method for guidance while choosing sewing patterns and deciding what to keep and what to pass along. Your video was the most helpful in finding mine: masculine, iconic, writer. :)
So far, so awesome ❤. I'm only through your first word and I feel that my word is 'masculine' - I love things I got from the men's department and you are inspiring me to try wearing ties again!!!❤
This was so helpful, thank you!! My brain could not make the jump on deciding on my 3 words, and no one else I've come across so far has given direct questions to ask myself to narrow things down. My brain likes concrete guidelines and I feel like everyone but you just went, 'Go with your heart and how the words make you feel!' and I was sitting there like 🙇 😅 Thank you for this!
Haha I totally feel you Kathy! As much as I like following my intuition and heart, I also want to understand WHY I'm picking something and HOW I'm making that decision.. so that on days when I'm not actually feeling very intuitive, I could make the same decisions. I'm very analytical so if that's something that works for you, I think you're going to enjoy my videos! Thanks for watching ❤️
Great video, the best application of choosing the 3 words I have seen so far. And I love your most worn clothes!! I think we have similar styles, but I lean more "masculine" than you. In Ellie Jean's style roots system, I'm trying the mountain-sun-moon combination. Not sure about my 3 words yet, but I recently came up with elevated + unexpected + nocturnal. Thank you for doing this video; it's so nice to see a more "real" wardrobe instead of these days' plain clothes many influencers have.
@@leticiapalazzo2957 thank you so much for watching Leticia! Oh that's so cool, my roots are mountain - sun - fire. It makes sense that I'd lean more feminine and you'd lean a bit "tougher" I imagine, even if "masculine" isn't the word you imagine! I think your words make perfect sense with the roots. Mountain is elevated (for me "polished"). Sun is unexpected (I really used unexpected for a long time as my word, I now use edgy but it's literally the same idea). And moon is nocturnal. Maybe tough / strong. And mine is fire which is the "feminine" in my words. I strongly dislike plain / boring outfits 😂 so you won't be seeing that here!
This was so interesting and easy to follow. I realised that my three words were not meeting my true expectations a while ago. I am now re-working them. Thank you, I'm very grateful. New subscriber ❤ from Australia.
Thank you so much Kate! Finding your words is definitely a process, it's taken me months to find the ones I feel truly represent me! I'd love to know what your words are when you've figured them out :)
I only recently narrowed down my three words but i love this and am sharing this video with my friends to elucidate the concept better! I tried your weird question method and you are spot on. My first word i ended up torn between practical and simple and recently chose simple but this helped me realize 100% it is. Because the extreme of practical might be some kind of workwear which i would hate, and i can love impractical (like big heels or a fussy fabric) it's just hard sometimes to wear. But when i think of the most simple outfit - a fitted crew neck in a plain neutral maybe, with a basic a-line skirt in the same color perhaps? the idea of wearing it overjoys me... and the inverse, busy, i would actively hate to wear. You are actually so brilliant!
@@rosereddened awww thank you Anna! So glad the weird questions helped you to make sure your words are the right ones for you! Its so fascinating how each person has their own preferences, and it sounds like you've found your words! Thanks for watching and sharing, I so appreciate it!
Such a smart and interesting video. I love your insight about when deciding on a word, whether or not you would wear the extreme version of it. I also love the idea of outfit formulas. I have a photo album where I've added all my favourite outfits of the year (so far) and tried to define the formula with text over the images. It's really helpful for inspiration. I have also found taking daily outfit photos has really helped me understand what really works on me and what doesn't.
Thanks Kath, and that's such a smart approach with analysing your favourite outfits of the year! I do something similar - it's good to find those trends in what we actually like to wear!
From bland to beautiful! With your description and without saying a word, you were able to tell the world WHO you are! Great video with before and after. Like the 360 twirl.
What a wonderful video, thank you, very helpful. Your tips on looking at the opposite and taking a word to the extreme really helped me figure it out finally.
🤔This has been such a challenging topic for me. I've been hung up on it for a while. Watching many other influencers try to tackle it only confused me more😳. 😊Thoroughly enjoyed your thoughtful analysis, outstanding graphics, & final Lookbook📸 showing your Style Words in action. So, if I understood it correctly... 1️⃣ Feminine = Emotional (Clearly reflected in your classic, feminine🤍 wardrobe sample, your silhouettes, ✨️sparkle, & softness.) 2️⃣Edgy = Aspirational (Based on what element of special interest that you'd like to use to add🧂spice to your style.) 3️⃣Polished = Practical Elevated Casual fits your personal preferences, the contents of your closet, climate, & lifestyle. This component also represents the special 🪄magic or twist you'll apply to finish or complete your looks. 😉Those 3 words work for me too. Feminine & Edgy 💯% speak to me on an emotional+aspirational level. For me, the former is classic, timeless tradition, preppy w/shades of glamour. Picture ultra feminine Grace Kelly in 🎞High Society. Unlike some today who favor this style, she was NEVER masculine, matronly, or ho-hum🥱. Her character was certainly more formal, but she also lived a seriously grand lifestyle. While the latter component leans rebellious, playful, & has an independent attitude. Ali McGraw in 🎞Love Story was still highly feminine & Ivy League, but she added her own anti-establishment twist into the mix. She brought elements of her blue collar background & also some sporty gear to support her athletic 💘Harvard beau. ⚖️She beautifullly balanced both worlds. She NEVER looked like some clownish caricature🤡. 😎Casual certainly fits my lifestyle & hot climate👍, and I appreciated how you defined & demonstrated the importance of Polish. ☆Loved how you wrapped & tucked the button up in the shorts. That hack works better on a curvy form (like mine too⏳️). It served as a sexy & sophisticated surprise. ☆The cropped lady jacket was 💫perfection paired w/graphic tee & shorts. The original combo has felt off on me before too😖. It simply struck me as basic & masculine. I didn't know how to fix it. Gotta find a Chanel style cardi like that in my palette. ☆I've worn a sassy black graphic tee w/my soft straight black ankle length skirt & black combat boots. I want to get a beret one day, but I do own a few knit caps & a lot of baseball caps🧢. (Probably too tomboyish & American for you🤓). Also liked your outfit w/the pretty b&w patterned skirt👏🏻. Skirts, shorts, & skorts are my jam once it hits🌡70°F in 🌸Spring thru late 🍂Fall. Don't wear jeans👖 at all, & my trousers are usually reserved for when our 🥵80-110°F+ Summer🌻 heat finally dissipates. ☆Lastly, also liked how you swapped out the pants for a skirt w/the plaid blazer👏🏻. Although a short pencil skirt is more my speed. 😬Only wear short-shorts or mini-skorts w/a duster length trench/kimono or a sweater tied around my waist😶🌫️. Well done! Blessings, 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
Thank you so much for watching and writing this comment Bridget! I really appreciate it :) Sounds like you're quite clear on what you like and your words, and that's the most important! I wouldn't get super hung up on which word is aspirational / practical / emotional - I think in some ways, they all are all of that!

Super interesting to hear about your perspective and your journey! Alison does say that some people have two "opposites" within their words (such as masculine and feminine) and for them, it helps to create tension and excitement in their look. Not a criticism, just something to keep in mind that while omitting opposites made it easier for you, some of your viewers may find considering opposites helpful. I love, love, love the outfits you created from your words!! Amazing.
Thanks for watching Lindsay! I completely agree, and I think somewhere towards the end of the video I do mention that some people can have quite contradicting words (including for me, edgy and polished are pretty opposed!). I agree that some people like to create tension through opposite words, and that if they are right in the middle of the words, then my questions won't work! One thing I remember though was the video Alison did, with a client I think who had fitted and oversized as her two words. If that person was in the middle, they'd definitely not resonate with the questions. But I think for most people they lean one way, with one or two elements from the other. So I think this lady was "fitted" and wanted oversized jackets. in my head she'd probably be fine with an all fitted outfit if she had to (but feel a bit like something is missing), but if she had to do oversized shoes, dress and jacket, she'd feel pretty uncomfortable (kinda hate it). So I feel like they question still apply, unless someone is very balanced in between two words.. but I hope they'll know that if that's the case! Thank you again for watching and I'm so glad you liked the outfits - the last one was my fave!
I have seen many videos about the three word method but I really enjoyed yours because I could follow your thought process with visual examples. It made everything very clear. It was also interesting to see how we interpreted words differently and that's a good thing. Our words need to have meaning for ourselves. Feminine is a word that really worked for you while I stay away from it even though I know some of my styles could be classified as feminine. The amazing thing is that these words make a lot of sense to us individually so they really work! ❤ Thanks for sharing.
@@monicagim2506 thanks for watching Monica! I'm glad it was clear and easy to follow, I'll try to continue that theme in my future videos! And totally - words are so personal! I think in general I wouldn't necessarily describe myself as "feminine" as a personality, but I have certain traits that may be seen as such. However I think my body leans feminine due to having rounded bones / hips - and so subconsciously my taste has shifted into it. And with time I've come to accept it and even enjoy it! But it definitely wasn't always like this. What are your words btw?
@@Happine5s thank you for watching, glad you've enjoyed it! What are you currently focusing on in terms of style? For me colour was the main focus last year - this year it's more about fabrics and shapes! Glad to have you on the channel ☺️
You’ve done an amazing job here… very helpful explanation. My three words are: Tasteful, quirky, and (maybe) minimalist. I have a capsule wardrobe of modest necklines (totally “basics with a twist”) in jewel tones and soft fabrics. I love bringing an unusual accessory or pop of bold colour into my outfits but, I try to pull it all together with simple femininity… not too over the top. Can you think of a better last word than minimalist for that? 😅
@@danielleg1504 thank you so much for watching! I'd wonder if "understated" or "paired back" maybe work even better? Or maybe you want to feel more classic / timeless / polished? They don't have to - minimalist is also absolutely fine, and it's all about what you know it means to you!
I think feminine, elegant and put together. I almost always wear dresses and skirts. I like florals, soft lines, soft fabrics. I find it hard to feel comfortable in super casual clothes. Accessories, shoes and bags are always well thought about. Thanks for your help XX
These sounds amazing, and very representative of what you're describing! I find it hard too to feel comfortable in something ultra casual (unless I'm going hiking or to the gym, and even then i have a pink wind jacket and pink sports bra haha) Thanks for watching!
@@Tabatha437 ohh so exciting we have similar styles! The best way? Look up "wear it well" book on Amazon / Google In the free pages shown, you'll see the words wheel. It's a great starting point!
lol I think your three words are mine :) I also think about where I live, and what “edgy” means here versus another part of the US I used to live in. Here “edgy” is more sophisticated clothing, where everyone is very casual and sporty. I dress more that way now. Where I used to live every thing was polished and sleek, so I dressed in more colors and in more layers.
I totally agree with you - I think edgy can be many things, and for me it's about being 'contrasting' in some way! So totally makes sense that you might want to be a bit more casual if everyone is polished, and vice versa! Btw not sure if you have seen my video about the Style roots - I talk about the 4 style needs there, and one of them is 'being different than your surroundings in some way' - thought you might be interested :) Thanks for watching ❤️
This was really helpful, thanks! I will try dressing for these words I found while watching this video… 1. Comfortable (I would totally wear leggings and an oversized hoodie with the most comfortable shoes to work at the office, I actually did yesterday and felt great :D), 2. is Fun because I would hate wearing an all boring outfit. To me a really oversized garment is fun, fun Colors are great or something entirely different. But a completely boring outfit - no thanks! and 3. is Confident. I need to feel confident in my clothes. I want to stand out a bit and whenever I feel really really bad when trying on clothes to put together an outfit, I think it is because I feel unsure.
@@Minamibam thank you so much for watching and shading your words Mira! I love that you found the word comfortable to be a great one for you, leggings + hoodie looks really cool (just not on me!). And fun is a great word too - I hate boring outfits! Hope the 3 words help you put outfits together that make you feel great!
Comfortable is not a great style word because no one chooses to be uncomfortable. If someone were to approach you and say, wow you look really comfortable, would that be something you want to hear? We all want to feel comfortable, but we don’t necessarily want to look comfortable.
@@careya yeah 100% agreed, I thought it might be mine because I feel like I can't stand stiff fabrics, very fussy outfits etc - while some people have a higher tolerance. But then I realised that I don't want to look "comfortable" like you say! So it's definitely not mine
I'd like to think with some of these words that the opposite can be left to interpretation while others like feminine obviously have a direct opposite. Comfortable is one of my style words and to me that's more casual clothing, natural fibres or easy care, low heels on shoes. Something I can move around in but still look good / presentable in. For me the opposites of that are sleek, elegant and formal clothing. Those tend to be more uncomfortable for me, more fiddly, constricting or elaborate and the opposite of my aesthetic.
@@kittikats I hear you! That's why I even considered this word for myself, because I am the same. I wear natural fibres 99% of the time, and I need to be able to walk in my shoes for a long time I don't like fussy or restricting things, so completely get you. I'd say what you've described is probably "easy to wear and style" pieces, but that isn't one word 😂 Maybe non-fussy? I think the words are your own for a reason. if comfortable works for you and you know exactly what you mean, this is what matters - you'll be able to diagnose outfits that don't work!
It depends! My bff's first word is comfortable and he knew as soon as i mentioned the three word method to him, he interrupted me to say "oh my first word is comfortable" haha. Obviously i don't personally want to be uncomfortable in my clothes but the word "comfortable" doesn't resonate with me the same way.
I too think classic is just boring. I need a twist with it. Yesterday I was out for dinner and wore a very classic dress and hairdo with leather boots and a oversized leather jacket 😁
@@happytofu5 love that combination!! Spicing it up is so much fun than sticking to one aesthetic, that's why I love the 3 words so much! Thanks for watching!
haha good shout, I don't speak French so I thought applique was pronounced like 'technique' - you might hear me say it wrong a few times in the recent video (oops) but I've corrected it in the new things I recorded :) And they are applique - not embroidered, they're separate 3D pieces that I could potentially 'cut' if I didn't want them :)
The method seems good, but I have one important thing to point out. Your "before" outfits that are not quite your style are just basic clothes put together with no personality, and in my opinion, no one dresses like that unless they want to go to take out the trash xD. The girl in jeans with a t-shirt gives the same vibes and I really don't think anyone that wants to express something with their clothes dresses like that. Each of us wants to have an outfit that represents them completely, and all of us have those effortless looks that we wear around the house or to the market around the corner. I guess what I'm trying to say is that no one likes boring, everyone likes to dress in a special kind of way. Besides, most of us actually dress according to our mood. We can sometimes be very feminine, very edgy, very sporty etc. Depends on the occasion, mood and most of all, season/weather. Just because I like floral dresses in the summer, doesn't mean I don't wear a nirvana t-shirt and boots with jeans in the autumn. YOU define the style, the style does not define you.
@@AlexandraZe hey, thank you for watching and sharing your observations and thoughts! I don't know where you live, but here in the UK.. there's a lot of people who dress like that! It shocked me too, because I come from a place where people would dress up when going outside, but in here there's plenty of people dressed super casually - it works for them. I agree that anyone who wants to express something with their style would normally put a bit more thought into it, but for some people it still might be sporty / casual / relaxed that they wanna express - it's just not me at all! I fully agree that we can dress according to our moods / situations, and I'm not sure if you've seen my latest video (about the style roots) - I introduced a concept there which is the "style needs" concept. I think both the nirvana tee and the floral dress can fulfil some of our style needs we want to express on the day!
Love it! And in some ways I'd say dressy and sophisticated are quite similar so they belong in the family! Honestly, as long as they work for you, that's all that matters to make great outfits!

This was so helpful, thank you!! My brain could not make the jump on deciding on my 3 words, and no one else I've come across so far has given direct questions to ask myself to narrow things down. My brain likes concrete guidelines and I feel like everyone but you just went, 'Go with your heart and how the words make you feel!' and I was sitting there like 🙇 😅
Thank you for this!
@@CB-in4dd thank you so much for watching, I'm glad the outfit communicated who I am!
What a wonderful video, thank you, very helpful. Your tips on looking at the opposite and taking a word to the extreme really helped me figure it out finally.
Thank you so much for watching - glad it was helpful! It can be such a relief to find your words, right?
🤔This has been such a challenging topic for me. I've been hung up on it for a while. Watching many other influencers try to tackle it only confused me more😳.
😊Thoroughly enjoyed your thoughtful analysis, outstanding graphics, & final Lookbook📸 showing your Style Words in action. So, if I understood it correctly...
1️⃣ Feminine = Emotional
(Clearly reflected in your classic, feminine🤍 wardrobe sample, your silhouettes, ✨️sparkle, & softness.)
2️⃣Edgy = Aspirational
(Based on what element of special interest that you'd like to use to add🧂spice to your style.)
3️⃣Polished = Practical
Elevated Casual fits your personal preferences, the contents of your closet, climate, & lifestyle.
Picture ultra feminine Grace Kelly in
🎞High Society.
Don't wear jeans👖 at all, & my trousers are usually reserved for when our
🥵80-110°F+ Summer🌻 heat finally dissipates.
Well done! Blessings,
💚Bridget from Cali☘️

Thank you so much for watching and writing this comment Bridget! I really appreciate it :) Sounds like you're quite clear on what you like and your words, and that's the most important! I wouldn't get super hung up on which word is aspirational / practical / emotional - I think in some ways, they all are all of that!
Extraordinary idea! Love how you look at things. Thank you. I didn't even know about this concept and now I can play around with it.

I was having lost of trouble understanding what I was missing when thinking my wardrobe... and it affected my mood more that what I would like to accept.
Aww Nadia, thank you SO MUCH for watching, commenting and sharing - you've made my day!! I think most people don't admit how much our clothes actually affect our mood, but the connection is real! You've actually just given me an idea to make a video about that :)
I've seen A LOT videos about style. Yours is one of the best and definitely the most practical one. Thanks!

This is super helpful- thank you!
Great advice in this video, I've also been trying to define my style words and I'm currently settled on: comfortable, 70's boho, feminine.

Wow, this has been the most helpful video I’ve watched on the 3 word method! Thank you!
You're very welcome Autumn, thanks for watching!

@@MiliVelikovaIt took a minute but I’ve adjusted my words and found the right fit: Tasteful, 60s-Inspired, Quirky. ❤

I think feminine, elegant and put together. I almost always wear dresses and skirts. I like florals, soft lines, soft fabrics. I find it hard to feel comfortable in super casual clothes. Accessories, shoes and bags are always well thought about. Thanks for your help XX

Mine three words are: appropriate, sophisticated, young/modern.
Love these! They'd make for some really great combinations! Thanks for watching 😊
lol I think your three words are mine :) I also think about where I live, and what “edgy” means here versus another part of the US I used to live in.
Btw not sure if you have seen my video about the Style roots - I talk about the 4 style needs there, and one of them is 'being different than your surroundings in some way' - thought you might be interested :)
Thanks for watching ❤️
@@MiliVelikova Yeah, I'm very picky about how I feel. Some fabrics and styles are so uncomfortable! Great video, BTW. :)
I wear natural fibres 99% of the time, and I need to be able to walk in my shoes for a long time
I don't like fussy or restricting things, so completely get you.
Just for future reference, Appliqué is pronounced “app-lee-KAY”, not “apleek”.
Also I couldn’t tell if the flowers were appliqué or embroidered.
haha good shout, I don't speak French so I thought applique was pronounced like 'technique' - you might hear me say it wrong a few times in the recent video (oops) but I've corrected it in the new things I recorded :)
And they are applique - not embroidered, they're separate 3D pieces that I could potentially 'cut' if I didn't want them :)
I'm cheating a little because I've added a fourth word, but my words are dressy, feminine, sophisticated, artsy
Love it! And in some ways I'd say dressy and sophisticated are quite similar so they belong in the family! Honestly, as long as they work for you, that's all that matters to make great outfits!

@tina369 is right! I liked the book alright, but I actually didn't find it as practical as your 22 min video :)
I first heard about this method from YTer @AlyssaBeltempo and a lightbulb went off in my head...and I sort of intuitively chose my words before reading the book, and they checked out. After watching your video though I realise I should reorder my 2nd and 3rd word for them to match the categories better.
Thank you so much for watching! I also found out about the 3 words through Alyssa's video ages ago, but it was only recently that I managed to find mine! So glad the video was helpful to you - I love the concept of the 3 words but definitely think there were steps which Allison does intuitively but we all need a more objective, rational way of figuring out!
