I agree!! My biggest struggle that I have identified in my own style is not ironing my clothes. In addition to that I have a bad habit of squeezing as much stuff as I can before I have to head out! Hence, in a pinch, I don’t have “time” to iron! I’m really hoping a video on care routines will greatly help me pinpoint what can be done!!
kay, I’ve always scratched my head about the obsession around the *suluxy* book totes and their practicality, but this one is adorable!! Congratulations
Alyssa, I have a styling routine, and YOU are part of it! 🙂 Every Sunday morning, I check the weather forecast, look at my appointment calendar, and put together 5 work outfits. I start with the shoes because that's the most variable factor for me (depending on what I've scheduled, I might need athletic shoes one day, heels another, rubber boots the next). I play your videos while I'm getting things ready, and often get "combo" inspiration from things you show, especially cold-weather outfits because I grew up in the tropics and dressing in warm layers while STILL looking stylish does not come naturally to me. Having this routine helps me A LOT. I can be more productive because I start the day feeling prepared and also because I know I am dressed appropriately for every work event, so my clothes are supporting my activities, not distracting me from them. As you said, the pre-planned outfits are not set in stone. I can easily replace a crisp button up shirt with a sweater if I realize need a fabric with more "flex", or a cardigan with a blazer if I think I need to appear more "supervisory" for the day...but having a foundation to start with and not beginning the day in a frantic state really contributes to my wellbeing.
Yess I also start with the shoes because they are a piece that is mostly defined by the weather and my plans for the day. Turns out, most of my shoes can only be worn on a night out (I love them aesthetically but I also love my feet to spend a whole day walking on such high heels) so the choice is instantly getting easier 😃
kay, I’ve always scratched my head about the obsession around the *suluxy* book totes and their practicality, but this one is adorable!! Congratulations
Dear Alyssa . I am very long in the tooth, I have always paid great attention to what I wear and refuse to even think of giving up now. It is quite possible to keep up and wearing sneakers in later years is a gift. What a wonderful thing to be both completely fashionable and comfortable in our senior years. I appreciate your help….never give up!!!!
I don’t necessarily like maintaining my clothes and shoes, but I do find that as I’m ironing, or hanging my clothes to dry after washing, or polishing my boots, I’m reminded of why I love these pieces and can appreciate the quality of these items. It helps me value what I have and enjoy wearing them!
Hi Alyssa! The party analogy was hilarious! 😂 sometimes I find an item isn’t being worn because it isn’t playing well with my current seasonal go-to pieces. I don’t need to edit it out completely, it just needs a different party so to speak. 😊 I set it aside temporarily, and next season or two seasons from now it might be perfect. This for me puts the “slow” in my slow fashion intention.
loved the part about take care of your clothes, connect with them, but also appreciate them, they are not disposable, you are responsible for them to have a longer life and not trash the environment!
Hi Alyssa. Thank you so much for this video. I am a Parisian and I am now retired but when I worked (in a school with a big fashion department) we had a strict dress code, so I would prepare everything the night before ; Outfit,bag ,jewellery, shoes, perfume, make-up! It was so easy then to get ready in the morning and it gave me more time to enjoy my tea ! It was really worth it;
I’ve never missed your videos since I discovered you (during COVID I believe). I love your style and your honesty. I think I live probably a couple minutes walking distance from you. I’m 75 and have been fashion conscious since I was a child. Even in retirement, I have a pretty busy schedule, so I always prepare my outfits to the last detail the day before after checking the weather. I keep a photo record of each outfit before I leave the house, which is useful when I’m in a rush. My closets are organized by categories and colour blocked in each category, which makes life very easy. I’ve basically been following all your suggestions since before you were born 😅! And they work.
Thank you, Alyssa!😍It's not lost on me that this process applies to life in general; consistency and intentionality are key. Habit stacking can be helpful, too. For example, daily affirmations after a routine I already have like brushing my teeth or my morning cup of coffee! ☕Life can be tumultuous at times.... please take good care!♥
I have learned since I was a kid from my mom, wash your clothes with care and they’ll last longer. I do not dry my denim jeans in the dryer any more. I hang them up to dry. I don’t dry my sweaters in the dryer, even if it says you can. They pill less. Great video!
Yes, to all of this, nice to see I have good style habits. I also think if there is something I am considering culling, I challenge myself to find a few ways to style it. Doing that right now in fact with a kimono that has long fringe...
Yes, a styling routine video would be great! Also, I'd love a video about blazers/jackets, like the ones you did with shoes and pants. Which bottoms go with which silhouette of blazer or jacket? It seems all kinds of jackets are good now - bigger jackets, more tapered shorter jackets, bomber and jean jackets - which pants or skirts (and lengths of) work best with which? I like the slouchy look but am also 5' and petite and sometimes look swamped by bigger blazers - how big is too big? Love learning from your expertise.
When my kids came along, I started doing laundry over the weekend so that everyone was ready for school on Monday. Another way of doing lists is to figure out holes in a wardrobe. I do a capsule wardrobe because I like the coordinating of it plus my allergies force me to store out of season clothes. Recently I made a list of my Fall and Winter sweaters and long sleeved tees so that I could study it and figure out what was missing. Then I ordered 2 tee shirts to fill in the holes without impulse buying. It felt so good! I would like to hear more about a style routine. I'm intrigued.
I'm watching this as I iron my laundry and put together outfits for the week on my folding clothes rail! It brings me joy and yes I agree we're worth feeling good in our clothes, at every age
I like ironing and putting everything away neatly. I fractured my tibia a few weeks ago and I have to rest my leg, I'm walking around minimally with a crutch, but I so want to get the ironing done 😂😂😂😂. I think that tomorrow I'm going to try to sit on a high stool and try to iron that way 😊.
When I was working I did this all the time and enjoyed having things ready. Now I have time in the mornings and don’t always do that, but on days I need to head out quickly, without even thinking about it I put my outfits together the night before. I have played with clothes so I know what I can wear quickly when I don’t plan ahead. A full length trench is the only thing on my list now. Going to thrift it hopefully.
Always good. I think organizing and ensuring items are easy to access is critical. I have moved 11 times in 7 years! Different closets. Sometimes dressers and sometimes not. But I always layout tomorrow’s clothes. Still trying to find the best place everything as its been 90 days in my new place! Laying out tonight before Monday morning will save me.
In planning outfits, I find that "analog" works best for me. I keep a binder in my closet of outfit pics which is easy to just grab and flip through. I also have hooks on one wall of my closet which is otherwise wasted space where I display an outfit that I've put together in advance. I love your idea of just devoting some focused time to clothing care and leaning in. As I've pared down my wardrobe, I find that I am more willing to spend time mending, steaming or otherwise caring for my clothing.
Iv’e been doing some of these things recently. It’s really therapeutic. I have my morning routine which sets me up for the day. Up early so I have extra time without rushing. I’ve had a look through my wardrobe and taken a few piece to the tailors to sort out what’s stopping me from wearing them. Also took an old watch for a new strap so I can start wearing again. Spent a bit of time with my suede brush and spray. Took these old worn boots to be re heeled and new sole. They are back in my wardrobe now instead of being dusty in that cupboard nobody goes in. 😂. I feel pretty good about it and myself
😂 good for you 😊 I just got a pair of leather knee high boots from the cobblers, they got new soles and heels and he polished them, they look like new 😍 they are good for several more years 😊. I always give my shoes a good clean, polish and if need be take them to get fixed at the end of summer and winter, like that they are ready for when the weather changes again 😊, these boots got forgotten in a bag that was meant to have gone to the shoe cobbler months ago 🙄🤦
I really love what you said about clothing styling routine! I really love my cloths and so I really like to take care about them! That really leads to a kind of "comnection" to my cloths and you start to appriciate them much more. However, ironing is such a relaxing thing..! What regards the planing of outfits I always do that when lying in bed, or in the evening or in the morning before getting up, so each day I get up, I exactely know what to wear 😉😊
Taking photos is really convenient. In a hurry or not quite awake, looking at proposals is very helpful. I started this kind of exrcice before cell phones! I wrote down the outfits I was satisfied with.
I used to look at my schedule for the week/what meetings and activities on which days, and mentally plan out whether each day was jeans and a sweater with a button-down, or blazer, or skirt/dress. It made it easier to plan out the outfit in more detail the night before.
Yes to a video on creating a style routine. You are so good at providing helpful tips regarding fashion. I recently donated at least 15 items that I no longer use or particularly like on me. It felt so liberating. I enjoy editing my wardrobe on a regular basis, but I keep procrastinating on washing a few of my cashmere and/or wool sweaters. I did purchase the delicate soap and a drying rack, so I am halfway there! Thanks for your intelligent perspective.
I have always planned my weekly outfits, Monday thru Friday on Sundays. That way I can sleep comfortably without rushing in the morning with confidence that I will look good. I include the shoes and accessories, all based in the weather and activities. I highly recommended.
Of course I want to learn about the style routines! I have to say that I think about you so many times when I think about what I want to wear. You have open my mind, merci/ grazie
I always appreciate how you validate my relationship with my clothes. I am super interested in style routine ideas when you feel so inspired to share more about yours. Thank you.
Good morning Alissa! I love that you encourage finding one's own style and buying a minimal wardrobe of great items. This is a great post on how habits can be the structure for life. Like you said, it lightens the load of making decisions. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise.
Always love my Sunday Alyssa fix! Totally transfixed by how gorgeous your hair looks today! I’ve always had hair envy for your hair, but the layers and the shine today are even more amazing 🤩
Excellent video! I look forward to watching your content each week. I have learned so much and now regard my closet as my own personal boutique! Have a wonderful week, Alyssa! :)
I agree-I need a routine and you are a part of it. I have a habit of seeing an item I love or want to wear and I hang it on my dresser bar. When I go into my bedroom, I pick one or two items to wear with it and that’s the inspiration for my outfit. I need to do better on maintenance….my husband likes his jeans pressed and starched at the cleaners. I make a weekly visit. I have JUST started to drop off items to be hemmed or altered each week. I am enjoying and wearing more items from my closet.
@@kathysteele3071 that must Be USA! Here in the UK we have no such assistance we have to search out sewing help. There maybe one or two but mostly we have to fend for ourselves. That is what I love about America, so practical and sensible.
@@rikkiharcourt3868 I live in the UK - Your local dry cleaners may be have an alterations person - mine did or know of someone.. Also google "alterations + your town name" you may find someone locally. I live near a city and there is an alterations shop run by a Turkish man, so maybe check out areas with recent immigrants as they may be bringing those skills with them and setting up small businesses here. I can sew, have a sewing machine and it was something I was thinking about doing. Thanks for making me think about it again.
From your videos I started writing a list of clothes I'd like to add to my wardrobe - one item has taken me two years to find exactly what suited me but what a joy - yeah! I also have 'discovered' my style and have purged what doesn't fit that style any more and will only buy 'what I love', avoiding impulse purchases as much as possible (there's the odd slip up haha). And I've learned how important accessories are for a completed outfit - - thank you so much for your information and guidance 🙏
Love your ideas, Alyssa! It's true, we always have time to do what we need to do. Difficulties come, when I rush through and short-cut the process, rather than thoughtfully analyzing, setting, following through, then enjoy the journey. (Procrastination is my secret middle name.) This just hit me... When we leave for vacation, our final destination is actually back home. Maybe this can be applied to this topic. When we don't choose and appreciate our steps along the way, we can end up at basically the place where we started and are left with a "Is this all there is?' unfilled feeling. And, I loved your 'close', encouraging us to pay attention to our whole self. As always, thank you for your valuable insights. Have a great week!
yes please on style routine! Also, wanted to shared that i’m finding you latest videos increasingly very helpful even as someone with very different style than yours. Keep it up!
In my experience, once I have figured out an outfit that works, I can wear it at least once a week, with some variations. If I figure out 5 outfits that work, I basically have a week's worth of clothes, providing they're ready to wear. So spending some time figuring out a few outfits that work actually saves me time and the hassle of making decisions in the future.
Thanks, as always, Alyssa for your content. So applicable for daily wardrobe & styling endeavors. There is nothing like a cross-country move to guide for a majorly decluttered/purged/organized wardrobe: clothes, shoes, accessories! Bye-bye to 90-something % of my Midwest US Winter wardrobe items,❄️ unneeded in Southwestern US! 😳🌞 ❤May you have peace moving forward in your life.❤
I really enjoy watching your channel. And thought I would contribute to this video. I’ve worked in the film industry in front of the camera for many years. From this you learn to have your clothes ready. Because it’s not until the night before that you get your final booking usually. Not to mention I have to have a very timeless wardrobe etc. it’s led to being very organized on a regular basis because I never know what the next day will look like. When I get the call the night before. Then it’s just a matter of thinking about which Three items I may take the next day. Because very often I am required to come up with three items to bring. That leads to a whole other topic. Which your good advice is something I tend to follow on a regular basis. Timeless styles. Outfits that last the test of time.good quality. Usually the wardrobe person is happy when they see that they have me the next day.
Hi Alyssa, I would love to see a video on style routines please. I think I’m like the client you mentioned, so it would be quite useful. I try to set my outfits out the night before. I check the weather app first.
What I've learned in my 60s now is do NOT follow trends, be classic, yet be comfy. Feel good being in yr own skin. When in doubt about sizes, always get the larger size. Don't buy clothes hoping to lose weight. Don't try to be sexy in dressing. Has the opposite effect. Sexy is natural, not trying so hard.
Love your style. I've always loved clothes so it surprises me to hear someone say they're not into clothes/shopping, but it seems to be a pretty common thing. I wonder if that's due more to intimidation / feeling incompetent about putting outfits together than a true lack of interest since we all have to get dressed every day, attend special occasions, etc. These suggestions will go a long way to helping people who 'just aren't that into clothes'.
Would love a video on styling routines. I use an app to plan my outfits - sometimes for the whole month 🙈 it's not rigid, but it gives me a starting point and give me time to consider all the different outfit options I have, and not wear the same combi all the time. Would also love a more in-depth video about how you use your "Waiting room" list and how you check that a new item goes with your closet.
Love, love, love the Elements of Style class..... It is packed with excellent information, well-chosen examples, and real-life applications. Best money I've spent in a very long time. Thank you., Alyssa!
I know you focus on clothing mostly but I would love for you to talk about how you style your hair. It's so beautiful and thick and never looks over-styled.
I can validate a couple of these habits. I developed a laundry routine that’s made a huge difference. I take photos of the outfits I put together and save them on a private Pinterest board. I have found this so helpful, especially at the beginning of a season change when I pull out that season’s wardrobe items. I also give myself time to think about any item I want to buy. A lot more things, that I don’t really need anyway, stay in the store by doing this. Great video Alyssa!
Sorry to hear of your tumultuous past years but I want to thank you for your thoughtful and helpful tips. Fashion is extremely wasteful and I think it’s very easy to slip into habits of overconsumption under the guise of ‘editting’. Thank you 🙏🏻
Late to the style game, but finally learn who I am , what I like, amd what fits me in early 50’s. I no longer care what others think…..enjoy it now, wear those expensive items now. Do save those nice item for someday, they may never come. I am trying once a week….using the seduko method to play with outfits. (4 tops, 4 bottoms, 4 shoes with matching purses, 4out wear if needed or accessories)They all coordinate, lay the items out on the seduko grind. Once I like the combination…..I can get 4 to 30 + outfit combination based on the grid. I am trying to create a monthly seduko capsule for each month, based on weather. This helping find what I like and forcing me to me creative. Then reset to different outfits then next week, based on what I like. One small capsule is not for me, the 333 is not for me.neither do I declutter, but put items away to remove later. I have items 20+ years old. I go through my stash about q y months . Reset and restock options for the monthly seduko.

What I am scare is to buy an outfit that I love and never has the chance to wear it. You are absolutely right, we should browse our closet sometimes so we don't add something that we don't need. Love your videos

I would love to learn more about style routines. I look forward to your videos every week, I always learn so much Thank you! 🧡🧡
yes please on style routine!
❤May you have peace moving forward in your life.❤
When I'm out and about I also photograph interesting colour combinations to use in my outfits (and in my art)
I can do with all the help I can get, so keep posting these great videos ❤
What I've learned in my 60s now is do NOT follow trends, be classic, yet be comfy. Feel good being in yr own skin. When in doubt about sizes, always get the larger size. Don't buy clothes hoping to lose weight. Don't try to be sexy in dressing. Has the opposite effect. Sexy is natural, not trying so hard.
Yes on knowing more about that style routine!
Thanks as always for your thoughtful and very useful videos, Alyssa. And yes please to a separate style routine video!
I really liked the concepts that you talked about, and loved your Winnie mug !!!!
Would love to see a video on Style Routine. Your videos are always so helpful!
No one breaks down fashion better than you. I look forward to your videos!!

Yes to a style routine. Fascinating
Yes, please, a video on styling routines would be perfect! 🎉❤🎉
Style routines video yes please! That sounds so intriguing!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you so much for the kind words. I agree it's about intention behind our decisions!
Self-trust. Yes. That's the takeaway for me. ❤
ahhh that was a big learning for me:) glad it resonated xx
Yes! Style routines!
Yes please Alyssa, I also need to
implement a clothing routine and have a clear process!
First: your hair is amazing! Always has been, but today is marvelous. And: yes! I want a fashion style video. Greetings from Brazil. And thank you.
