    "If you can't win the game... if you can't solve the puzzle... then you're just a loser." -N
    In the world of "Death Note", Kira is god- a seemingly omnipotent entity with the ability to decide who dies and how. Only the smartest might even suspect that the killings ultimately tie back to a very dedicated young adult with an otherworldly notebook and a strong sense of justice. The series follows Light Yagami as he puts his genius mind to work, dodging police suspicion and killing off criminals in order to create a perfect world. His actions raise a lot of questions about the true meaning of "justice" and how humans respond to death... But perhaps an even bigger question is "Would he still be able to pull this off in modern society?" Join Tyler at The Imaginary Axis for a journey through culture and recent history to uncover the surprising argument about why even the greatest serial killer from 14 years ago might be a minor nuisance today... and why that should scare you even more.

    I feel like it would be super easy for Light to counter this actually. Firstly, he has the advantage of his method of killing being supernatural... which means it sounds like a conspiracy theory. That GREATLY limits both the number of people and the type of person who would correctly guess his methods. Secondly, he'd be able to monitor everyone's progress. And thirdly, he'd have an army of supporters who he could organize, and the ability to bombard the internet with alternate theories and misinformation campaigns.

Even if you somehow don't have any legal name at all and you have no interaction with humans who can give something like a nickname they know you by - Death Note still has something to work with. L deduced that Kira existed prior to using any police information. He announced it TO a gathering of police officials from around the world right after they were contemplating calling him in...which means he didn't need their info to figure it out, because he hadn't gotten it yet.
      The names and faces thing is honestly a huge gaping hole in the story since it hinges upon criminals who hadn't died yet...even though Light was far, *far* away from having cleansed the world of criminals yet. In fact, *after* that point in the story, Light even states that he's got a whole roster of criminals that he saves for experimental purposes, and he also has deaths scheduled well in advance of the current day in case he is incapacitated in some fashion.
      TLDR: L doesn't use police info to figure out that Kira exists and figuring out he needs a name and a face to kill is nearly impossible. He may need one or the other, but knowing he needs both is impossible via the method used in the series.

    Also like in the show most people either wouldn't care or even cheer him on since he's killing criminals.

    Light strikes me as the kind of guy who wouldn't be on social media, even before becoming Kira. He was popular because he was smart, athletic, and good looking, but he was never social. He didn't seem to have any friends or any interest in dating before it was a cover for his activities.
    And if Google could out him so easily, how the heck do actual terrorists pull off anything? I think that people give the ever watching "Big Brother" too much credit sometimes. There's too much information going around online every second to pinpoint the suspicious activities of one person or small group unless you already have reason to single them out.

      +Jay B -- TBH, Light's not all that and a bag of chips. I'm pretty sure he's a psychopath and even if he just goes power-mad in a hurry, he makes quite a few mistakes.
      Modern Terrorists have been using the same tactics since the 80s. It turns out that meeting face-to-face in a church basement every week is still the best way to avoid all surveillance except for infiltrators.
      Charismatic leaders recruit disaffected individuals through some twisting of ideology (usually political or religious) to join a "social group" that meets in the real world face-to-face. After a while in the echo chamber, those deemed fit for advancement are taken aside after a meeting to perform some "test of loyalty" (usually armed violence, and/or isolating themselves from friends or family) and then are taken to the "next layer" of the organization. They are then placed in a militia unit or as part of a cell in another city, either to recruit more people or to stage an attack. Everything done so far is _entirely legal_ as long as no physical coercion or threats are used.
      Once part of a cell, they move into a location chosen by the Organization and start looking for work. They go to work, they get along with their neighbors. All the while, they quietly gather equipment, train and plan their attack (potentially for years) and then execute it without breathing a word of it to anybody. They have no online presence, they never call home and as much as possible without arousing suspicion, they only socialize with "roommates" (aka. fellow cell members). From the outside they look like any other group of young men starting out in the Big City.
      And unlike Kira, they aren't leaving a constant trail of dead bodies covered in psychological and physical clues for a detective to puzzle over.
      Non-state militias like ISIS are basically just military units on campaign. They know how to hide from drones and satellites and they get funding through various outside means. Again, they have very little contact with the outside world, therefore there's nothing to track.

  • @lortigaproductions3120
    @lortigaproductions3120 2 ปีที่แล้ว +67

    No,
    let me explain why in detail.
    The only reason there was a light to shine on light (mhm) in the first place was because of his underlying "true" motivations for doing what he did, boredom. He was on a quest for self-realization just as much as changing the world, if not more. Even if he fell for L's first trick, if he had stopped there and not used police information, they likely would never have gotten close to Light. In a world with internet, Light would never have tried to challenge L in the way he did and your premise seems to rely on the internet replacing L, not that he is also a player. There are no surveillance in lights home, and even if we assume all his electronic cameras are always watching, he could simply use a desktop monitor without a camera and make sure his phone never faced anything revealing. A mega-genius like Light would be aware of all potential risks of his devices and would prepare for the worst case scenario. Perhaps the most dangerous moment would be when he first comes into contact with Ryuk and if his conversation with him was recorded somehow. Although, even if this was the case, the few ears that would have access to this audio wouldn't assume a magical death note was responsible for the killings. Light said he was expecting Ryuk however, so he would realistically have prepared for this scenario as well.
    You also forget that the deduction of L was at first based on the information Kira would have available to him. Light would be smart enough to kill criminals from all around the world since he would have access to the entire world's news feed through the internet. Using L's deduction methods would be impossible, and the only reason he found Light to at all was because light wanted "to get closer to L so he could eliminate him". You could argue that you could trace lights tv and internet history to the killings, but with sophisticated means of keeping ones privacy through VPNs and I imagine other things, he could hide this from at least the internet's eyes. Any larger and more powerful entity would have no reason to suspect him yet and so wouldn't allocate recourses to scour some random Japanese students computer. Besides, Light could simply make note of criminals names and faces through public tv's or computers at his school or other more creative solutions he would surely come up with and there would be no trace to him expect maybe at the most extreme of cases that Kira was likely one of the students at his school.
    Light would keep up appearances with social media or he might not even use it. If he was using it he would simply continue as he was. The kind of personality change that could be detected after he found the notebook would be barely visible on social media and if anyone tried to figure out who Kira was through means like that, the internet would go on wild witch hunts for small perceived "evidence". Also, there wouldn't be anything near consensus on whether Kira was in fact an individual or a group. It would likely be seen as more plausible that a large organization planned it or even that a real god was behind it. Only very few would have the intuition and deduction to guess the truth, and even fewer would trust that intuition enough to actually believe it fully. Even fewer would have the recourses to act on those intuitions, and if they didn't have the recourses but wanted to amass help through the internet, it's unlikely many would believe him/her and be convinced whatsoever.
    Also, there are many serial killers on the loose right this moment and the internet will never find them because they don't leave a trial. If there are no flag recordings or base recordings or photographs to base your geolocation-finding skills on there would be nowhere to start. Light would sit in his room after school, pretending to study, recording names outside in the open and would never be suspected of anything.
    There are other points I could make because frankly there are so many, but the last and perhaps most important one would be - all of Light's information would be publicly available, but so would almost everyone else's, so his ability to threaten peoples lives would be so overwhelming that only people like L, N and Mellow and secret organizations with secret members would be able to do anything about it. Even then, Kira would, as he does in the manga, threaten presidents and leaders to stop funding for investigations. He would hold the entire world hostage, and because of the internet, this time it would actually be true. Simply the threat of Kira killing anyone posting any investigative efforts online would be enough to discourage all but the most devoted. So the idea that all the internets brainpower would be pooled together is a pipe dream and it would probably end up looking more like it did in 2003.

    This entire argument is based off the premise of Light doing the same things he did in the manga if the current version of the internet existed. But thats just it, Light would never do those same things if that was the case.
    You're holding two separate eras of time accountable by the same story.
    Wouldn't it be more realistic to imagine how Light, equipped with his same superior genius level intellect and his same Death Note we all know, would go about his reign of terror if he actually NEW about the current version of the internet?
    Obviously the entire story would change, because if Light lived in the current time we live in, he would already know every point you brought up and more, leading him down a completely different path that we saw in the manga.

      VPNs do little to protect your privacy or enhance your security, unless paired with other changes.
      VPNs cannot encrypt data outside of the connection between your device and the VPN server also there's a "no logging" policy which is completely wrong (state of Japan we're talking about; It's all going to be logged).
      There's not really a lot that VPNs do other than hiding traffic from your ISP (Leaks do happen to expose this very often).
      Light would use Firefox (for regular activity) and TOR (for other illict activities) making it harder to trace.
      Light was portayed as a hardworking, talented, and successful young man with a strong willpower and "justice" (although corrupted soon after with a God complex); Light is incredibly ambitious, with the cunning and creativity to carry out his goals (such as "Becoming God Of The New World", "New World Order", etc).
      Light is basically a genius and often adored by his peers (students, family {Although not shown visibly, it was subtle}, and even Lawliet Obrah {L} as he even considered him a potential replacement in the event of his death, despite his suspicion.)
      Light would also have to be modernized in this situation (As the video author made L, Mello and Near basically as their peak which is they're useless unless compared together and Mello's sacrifice is what stopped Light from outsmarting Near (He would of regardless).
      So Light is around the level of a Extraordinary Genius I'd say...
      Now, we modernized pretty much all important characters we need to create new plot and proceed the events which is pretty much impossible due to Light, L and Near all being unpredictable in some ways.

    • @lostsassychild6021
      @lostsassychild6021 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Also nobody will make the leap of "Oh, it's a magical death note thingy" and would assume past events happened before the events of the person's death so they're continously fall victim to Light's unknown killing method.
      The only reason L got it was because of Plot.
      *That is Light is extremely arrogant and has a god complex, and can panic when these things are challenged so he makes these kinds of mistakes given the resources of L the plot required him to be written in this way and you know the rest*

    After having thought about a modern-day Death Note scenario for literal years, I've recently come up with a strategy that Light would be able to use in order to operate as Kira while remaining nearly untraceable.
    Now, admittedly, this strategy would have to assume a few things. In the original story, Light initially didn't perceive there being any threat to his reign, so he carelessly wrote names in the death note that were all available through local resources and during his free time, two factors which allowed L to very easily narrow down the suspect list to Japanese high schoolers. So, this strategy assumes that after Light discovers that the power of the Death Note is real, he immediately takes to planning and preparation instead of carelessly killing, and that he is aware of the threat that other internet users and massive tech companies pose to him, which, if Death Note were in the modern day, Light would likely be aware of their power to at least some extent.
    Now, on to the strategy. Following the initial testing phase, Light would need to take a break to ensure that his initial kill, which was locally broadcast in Japan, seems like a coincidence and can't be linked back to him. In the meantime, he needs to covertly stockpile names and faces from a large variety of sources. Luckily, Light has a lot of options available to him. Being the police chief's son and being already on the path to becoming a police officer, having already helped solve some cases, his search history is likely already filled with crime and criminal related subjects, so it likely wouldn't raise any red flags for him to actively search online for criminal names and faces. We could also assume that Light's hacking skills have kept up with the times and he can still access his father's computer, and by extension police databases, without leaving a trace. Meanwhile, other avenues he has available to him are all the news broadcasts that Light can see while he just walks home in the first episode, newspapers which could be harder to track, or he could also make use of his popularity and start dating someone who's into the true crime genre, making it so that he could be searching for criminals using his partner's search history instead of his own and it wouldn't look out of the ordinary.
    Of course, you may be asking yourself how he would go about stockpiling names and faces? Easy, through a digital camera, making sure that the camera doesn't have any wireless connectivity capabilities. He could easily take pictures of the names and faces of criminals. To be extra cautious, he could also make sure that his purchasing of a digital camera is difficult to trace by purchasing a used camera from a pawn shop or something instead of from a larger store or from amazon. Similarly, he should also buy a second-hand laptop or computer from a similar source to make sure the purchase can't be traced. Light has shown himself to be pretty crafty in the original story, so it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that Light would probably be good with computers, not only in terms of software, but in hardware as well, and he could open up the computer he buys and remove any wireless adapters found within to ensure that the computer remains offline. From there, he can safely take the SD card out of his digital camera and open up the files on his computer at any time, while also giving him the ability to encrypt said files in case anybody gets to snooping around his stuff.
    Once Light has stockpiled a good surplus of names and faces, he should set a specific date and time at which a large amount of criminals worldwide will all die at the same time, especially any good high profile cases he finds, before beginning to kill criminals at a more hourly rate. This initial killing event would serve to immediately get the entire world's attention, which is incredibly important. Two main movements would start to occur online. The first is that internet sleuths would begin investigating the cause of the deaths, and will quickly deduce that Kira needs a name and a face to kill. Once they discover this, given the pace at which information spreads and the prevalence of the newfound Kira case in news and social media, this would quickly become common knowledge. Once that's the case, the second important movement occurs, which is that Kira followers begin to set up websites and social media accounts spreading around the names and faces of criminals everywhere that they possibly can. Given, once again, that the Kira killings are going to be the thing that everyone is talking about, there would be A LOT of online searches for criminals and Kira-related subjects, which would allow Light to more blatantly search for criminal information online, easily slipping in with the large stream of people searching these kinds of things. These Kira followers would be able to provide Light with countless criminals from around the world and from a large variety of sources. As long as Light diversifies where he gets his information from, getting stuff from multiple different websites and social media accounts and not relying on any single one, that is, leaving some criminals from each website alive to make sure that people can't tell Kira is getting his victims from any one website, then he should be untraceable. At this point, Light has established a secure information network without raising any red flags to tech companies, while also ensuring that the police and internet sleuths don't have any good information to work off of other than that Kira needs names and faces.
    As far as I can think of, this strategy is tightly knit together and allows for safe use of the Death Note with next to no chance of getting caught. If anyone can think of any holes, flaws, or oversights in this plan, I'd love to hear them and be faced with the challenge of addressing them with further planning and preparation.

    • @worthlesshuman5041
      @worthlesshuman5041 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Plus, in order to further avoid the eyes of ISPs, Light could also make use of a vpn. If he wanted to be extra careful, he could search up the name of a specific show or movie that isn't available in his country on a streaming service before getting the vpn, giving him plausible deniability as having gotten it for the purpose of watching content and using school wi-fi safely.
      Unfortunately for Light, there are at least a few problems for him. Firstly, Light likely only speaks English and Japanese. This is problematic because people are going to post criminals whose identities were only broadcast in their region on these forums, thus if Kira kills any person whose name was only brodcast in Japan and posted on a Japanese forum, it can be deduced that Light is at least passably fluent in Japanese. Since many of these local internet forums are inevitably going to be in English anyway, this is mostly ok, however Light has to be careful to either not use any Japanese forums or use a machine translator to kill using forums from around the world. The issue with that, though, is that the names of these criminals might be misspelled by the translator (although this can be circumvented by directly transcribing any symbols)
      Another issue Light may have is that, especially if he isn't using a vpn, if some equivalent of L suspects that Kira might be japanese, it would be possible to confirm this theory by subtly blocking certain forums from the Japanese web and then deliberately leaking the names of anonymous criminals like Lind L Taylor onto those forums, then seeing if any of them die.
      I guess the last concern is that if Light screams stuff like "I WILL BE THE GOD OF THIS NEW WORLD, JUST YOU WAIT L" in his room at the top of his lungs, his mom and sister might get a little suspicious

So people would not be able to guess that the killer was using a magic book.

      Since the original wave of corpses was left in Japan they would most likely start there.
      Then, after a few days and some brainstorming, they'd notice his schedule and realize that he is a student.
      After that, all they need to do is wait for Light to slip up, which he would because he is a narcissistic, impulsive lunatic who has a history of slip-ups in the original series.

    When you think about it, Modern Internet Light could still become quite a powerhouse with the death note, as he'd know to use modern tools. The obvious is to hide suspicious searches using VPNs and relying on software that just doesn't have trackers in it; basically everything has some workable alternative.
    However, he'd also be able to use social media to his own benefit. With some caution, he can turn his social media accounts into his own personal alibi generator. He would do regular every-day stuff and post about it online, but set up deaths to occur at the same time; that is, assuming he wouldn't have a reason to reveal his control of the time of death to anyone. With the world breathing down his neck, why would one individual detective get beneath his skin the way that L does in the anime?

    • @TheAce12570
      @TheAce12570 4 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      Honestly, he would probably just operate with a man-in-the-middle type of strategy. Basically instead of finding the information himself, he'd figure out the name of just one criminal, then write "searches the internet for criminals and copies their names, pictures and details of their crimes, then prints this information out and brings the envelope to ________ (a location where Light (or yet another m-i-t-m) could pick it up), before going home, erasing all evidence of his recent activity and hanging himself." Then he could just repeat this process with a different criminal later. Even if they tracked down the man in the middle, which would already be a gargantuan task, they'd still have no way of connecting it with Light unless he was dumb about the way he handled the exchange of information with his puppet. Which he wouldn't, it's still Light we're talking about.

      They contact Google or another internet provider in the Kanto area, cause the know criminals, in this propose, are going to gave Light the names, planes and public transport are not a option.
      They see some strange internet access in some area and go to investigate.

    • @kingol4801

      Chara Dreemurr You underestimate the power of death note, lol. This can be simply negated by “X person dies of accident, but before that they receive page and fully fill it out with the names of criminals. Of course, they research the names themselves. In case they are captured, they can be ordered to suicide or whatever. Also, they are ordered to simply write the names down, and hence, they have no idea that their action actually kills people”.
      Lastly, the police (or ANY logic based detective) won’t even consider the pages the main cause of death. Nobody! Be realistic. They will try to find what happens with the page afterwards (if that has not been destroyed by the puppet already). And will get stuck in a dead end.
      Then you can repeat the process with some other random person.
      You seriously underestimate the power of death note, lol. It gives the user an ability to kill people from any distance in any location and mind-control them (before their eventual demise). These powers alone are close to being top tier, lol.
      All your analysis is wrong because you assume that people will know how exactly people die (I.e. they will know about death note). But here is the thing - they won’t. The power of disbelief, conspiracy theories etc is astonishing. Hence, they will simply lack any reasonable evidence to, well, do an investigation. Add on the precautions of making other people to fill out the death note + make all death random/accidents/whatever etc (limiting the correlation between the method of death to 0).
      If anything, people would believe it is some “final destination” stuff going on. Not some oddly specific notebook killing people (seriously, you wouldn’t even consider that an option if you haven’t known about the anime). Case closed. No suspects, but a trail of bodies of both innocent and many more guilty.
      Also also, the police won’t act rationally or perfectly. If they did, there would be 0 unresolved cases. Still, people can get away with practically anything these days. Add to that some mythical object with leaves no evidence and little to no trace, and you will never be caught as nobody would be able to prove or suspect you directly. Maximum, they will follow your puppets, which will be clueless and know nothing.
      Also, even if they prove that pages kill, they will not know that you can manipulate one’s behavior or the rules of the death note. Hence, again, there is practically no chance of them catching you. GG.

  • @JC-yu1lf

    If light got the notebook now, he would have noticed that the internet is catching up way faster than L, so he wouldn't have driven himself into finding L as a egotistical battle of wits, for him it would have been easier that he remains anonymous and just keep writing the names. Like even if the internet knew it's a student doing all of this, what could they do, people would have no idea that there's a notebook and a shinigami involved in this. Light still would have continued writing the names and become the "god of the new world" which he wants...

  • @ampisbad
    @ampisbad ปีที่แล้ว +11

    this is briefly discussed in the anime, where Light says he has dedicated fan sites, very early on, imagining those but on a larger scale is kind of mind-boggling. There would have been a discord server to find L's face and name long before L announced himself to the world and if not, the very second that he sent that first broadcast to Kira. Light would 100% have access to all of L's servers, he's smart enough to not immediately out himself to algorithms and once the Kira case becomes public, there's bound to be thousands of people even more religiously searching for known criminals than him to throw algorithms off.
    Misa and L would be effed way harder by the Internet than Light, both being celebrities in their own right, Light may have a few photos and maybe videos of himself online, but as Kira, he's untraceable by those methods. I'd liken it more to well constructed limited information ARGs than the Internet tracking one specific person, some of which are still largely unsolved.

      I don’t believe light ever considered L to either be real or as smart, and so I believe hindsight is the real lynchpin, not the year. Light failed because his initial entrapment in the game of wits came about because he didn’t think it could be traced back to him so quickly. Knowing how thoroughly he has to cover his own ass could have drastically changed the outcome in both situations. Tor is a good example of how one can hide on the internet today.

      Which is why in the Netflix adaptation, Light is actively directing his higher-profile murders out of Japan. And when he spreads his own "God Name" of "Kira" he selected it because it's relatively neutral: it's a Japanese pronunciation/writing of the English word "Killer"...making those who would hunt him believe that he originates in Japan.
      And it's also that care which was a problem. See, no such overt "Google searches" were performed because Light was accessing his father's police database for 99% of the criminals. L thus justified the lack of open searches for criminals pre-Judgement with the explanation that Kira had access to police databases; if he's not using Google, he must have access to a private criminal database such as the ones that police forces regularly use. Thus L sprinkled bait case-files throughout various police databases...and Light picked one concerning Japan to throw the trail that direction. However, L set that seed in the specific database Light was using...which is how L knew that Kira was connected to that police force in America. (I believe the Seattle Police Department. Or Chicago Police Department. One of those.)
      And it's also part of why he uses Watari to get information on L's true name...avoiding the entire possibility of the internet realizing that the person looking for "world's greatest detective L" would be Kira by preventing the former thing in the first place.

    • @onijester56

      Or have a private database that permits him to find victims without cluing Google and the Internet into his search history. Something like a police criminal database, which he regularly frequents and has access to because of his police chief father.

    I think this video over simplifies many, many variables that the manga/show would handle with extreme nuance. If it was set in a more modern time, than you'd have to take that into account for Light as well, not just assume he would be killing in the EXACT same way he would have in the past.

  • @LS-oh8kv
    @LS-oh8kv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Something I always find interesting is Light lost in episode 2. Allllll the way back then, he already lost. If he didn’t try to kill L, then L would have no proof he exists, wouldn’t have a location on him, even if he did figure out light was likely a student, there are far too many students to ever narrow it down.
    His attempt to kill L was his loss, and every battle of wits from then on, even if he wins, is a losing battle

      He has an untraceable magic killing book. If he had control of his ego, he would never have gotten caught. But like Light himself admits early in the show, he's ultimately killing to reduce his boredom. Caution and planning are means to prolong his game, and the thrill of risks is the goal of his game.

      He was also incredibly immature.
      Watching the show for the second time I paid close attention to this theory that L proposes within a day of working with the Japanese police force, and the truth is there - Light repeatedly made childish displays of power and critical mistakes.
      Many might say that he left breadcrumbs for his pursuers because he was confident, but in reality, not all of his mistakes came from condescension or even confidence - many of the mistakes he made, the mistakes that played bigger roles in his entrapment than others, came about from ignorance, impulsiveness and carelessness.
      A good example of this is his impulsive murder of the fake L in episode 3, which led to conclusive proof that not only was Kira a person, but one living withing Kantai prefecture, Japan.
      A much wiser and more paranoid Light from even a week later would have carefully tried to predict the trap but not the Light of that time, but that's the point - Light was only learning from his mistakes during the most crucial point in his profiling. It's not that he constantly left behind clues because he knew that they couldn't be put together, in fact only in very rare cases did he actually provide information with a completely controlled mindset (like when he had inmates write a series of dying messages), in all other cases he was either unaware that he was making mistakes, or he made them in haste while trying to cover up other mistakes (such as when he reacted to the police profiling him as a student so he changed his schedule; the damage is already done and all he's doing is panicking).
      If he hadn't been killing with a magical force in the first place, he would have been caught a lot sooner, since the only thing that truly slowed down the investigation was the inability to even comprehend the killing method. L's profilings of Kira and Light Yagami were swift and meticulous.
      Of course a magical killing method would still stump the internet community, but I fully agree with the video director here, that regardless of that speedbump, his identitiy would be revealed nonetheless and even more efficiently by the internet community than by L.

    • @MouseGoat
      @MouseGoat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "magical killing" would still stump the internet community, sure but not for long. people would just lage on to the first and best theory. and work with that.
      "someone got a new super weapon" --> "the super weapon is from japan" --> " a student has this weapon".
      "we found the student!, the weapon is controlled by a book!?"
      and just like that the internet found him, i could se that going down in les than 3 days.
      it really comes down to the number of mystick killings.
      but he would have some run time, as he could kill a good deal of people before the internet took interest.
      but once it did.... well game over.

The FBI were cooperating (which led to L getting closer to light via the death of ray penber), ties to the japanese police were used to broadcast the original message, etc. etc. What goes on in a prison is not publicly available information, and L needed all the cooperation and confidential information he could get to solve the case. I think there are too many factors that disprove this.
    1. Trolls and Kira followers will flood the internet with impersonators everywhere. This alone creates a huge wall between light and the internet.
    2. Using Tor and other Browsers with good security will likely keep him on the down low.
    3. The death note series is extremely unrealistic in one aspect, it doesnt mean much in terms of quality but it is a major factor. The death note is a supernatural device, it will be the last thing anyone would think of. First they would think drug induced heart attacks, then it would be physically induced heart attacks, then disease and after years of research and investigation it will most likely be too late. In your situation the internet would need to know what the death note is and how it functions.
    4. Kira would most likely become an organization of followers and start a world wide movement. In the anime, people figured Kira was a single person. But based on the number of deaths, it would be way more likely to assume Kira is some sort of cult following rather than a super villain using an evil notebook. we

      Majority of people don't like killing, and don't like it when somebody can kill them anytime, anywhere. Especially people on the internet. Soon as they find out that Kira doesn't have the power to kill anonymous nicknames on the internet, they will raid his place.
      Not to mention the organized criminals, the people that want the power for themselves, and the freaking government. The government has the power of propagation, and there would be absolutely no way the politicians would paint someone who can kill anyone without bullets in a good light.

      They won’t know he got the information, it will only be a benefit.
      Aside from using tor and being almost completely annonymous, there are also some people who already investigate criminals, either for themselves or professionally, there will be plenty of people searching the same things Light does, and he could piggyback off the popular searches of criminals and go unnoticed.

      @Al3xh413 Just a smart kid? Light was a kid that scored a maximum on the hardest university's entrance exam, if thats anything related to the SAT's that would give him an IQ of about 152ish, 0.026% of the worlds population, this kid outsmarted the best detective in the world when he wasnt even at his peak. To say hes just a smart kid would be dumb. Those obsessive weirdos would be around 125 because they see a purpose in doing random shit

      Minibo06 he is an unstable orphan who dresses up as his greatest fear and beats people up so they don’t commit crimes. I mean, that doesn’t sound crazy to you?

    This whole theory falls apart when you consider the fact that Light would likely use Tor, and consistently act normal on all traceable social media accounts and searches. A modern age Light, would have this common sense and more. We'd have to assume he'd take the exact same actions as he did in 2003, but I doubt he would if the conditions were as they are now. Hell, his edgy ass probably would use 4chan.

      Exactly. He would know ahead of time to cover his ass. Not to mention I doubt he would have an Instagram or FB. And even If he did it would be to throw people off and have nothing but innocent posts and pics. Too much assumption has to happen for this to work.

      Ever since watching Death Note, I always wanted to see a modern-day adaptation go the route where instead of using the Death Note personally, Kira sets up a Social Media website on the Dark Web built around the concept of using a robot-operated Death Note to automatically kill anyone a large enough portion of the website's user base deems "worthy to die".
      The only caveat being that you have to verify your own name/face data accurately, and have it freely available for anyone else on the website before being allowed to access the website yourself. Not sure how feasible enforcing such a caveat would be, but the information this video provides gives me hope it'd actually be more reasonable to implement than I'm currently assuming.

      Also Light was a hacker then I'm pretty sure he'd still be a hacker now and a good one so he wont be caught that way... why is his ability as a hacker not taken into account

      The one thing you should know about the internet is that there's always someone smarter and better than you. Light as a hacker would be a joke to some of the groups operating on here, and more importantly, a challenge. The less skilled world would make way for the professionals who would then share the information secretly/publicly anyway.
      He could try re-routing the information used according to what his computer is logged to find, but they'd just use that obvious tactic against him with decoys plus he'd have to be CONSTANTLY online literally spending 99% of his time on the computer just to circumvent attacks against a collective, uncollective of thousands of sinister and well-meaning members of society, each launching independent attacks in an ongoing race to find him first. Some with access to the time that he needs just by nature of their lives.
      Light is very human. One obvious attack against him could very well mask one he'd never seen and having one person in the limelight with so much active time online, so much security and all the above-mentioned clues...
      Not only that but it took him a week to set up basic defense mechanisms should his own family find the book. The one thing you should know about the internet is that there's always someone smarter and better than you, he'd be caught.
