    I like how Light didn’t have an abusive backstory to try to justify his mentality. They just make him a blank slate and the audience needs to decide for themselves.

Meaning if they cant learn it is bad..bc they already know if is..there is no "hé learned now Lets forgive him".. there is a point where people shoudnt be allowed to "have a wonderful life and go into a beautifull future that they deserve"...because they make innocent people beg and cry for mercy making Them want to die.. wich shoudnt be rewarded with a chance of beautifull life getting away with it.. sure bloodshed is bad.. but what about the little girl that got raped and murdered?.. that isnt bad?.. hes allowed to life like nothing happened as if that 5 year of girl doesn't matter hé killed her do hé deserves a beautifull life?..no.. Just no.. that's Just me tho.....now i dont vote for Kira eather...hé would kill a robber...wich isnt that bad of a crime..but i dont believe u should reward someone with a wonderful future when hé had ruined that of one other.. hé takes it...means hé deserves it less... I mean kira is wrong but his original logic in episodes 1-2 is not I will say that...episode 3 is where he goes off the rails and betrays what he stands for cause hes finally challenged on his philosophy forgetting about how humanity has decided to deal with crime and punishment...aka using jail and trials and making a job out of defending or opposing criminals....and he knew all along where this would lead he relished being a god of morality cause ryuk states if you kill with the book you have to keep writing names yet light chooses to use it anyways and it paints the book as corrupting and light manipulates and kills innocents and he makes mistakes constantly as a kid would and gets bailed out by bs magic but you can sorta understand his initial reasoning for using the notebook...but stuff like killing L on live t.v. out of anger was a mistake cause it proved not only that he existed and could kill people instantly but that he needed newspaper t.v. or computers to show him who was a convict since the guy who posed as L was someone about to be executed they got to play L promising to not execute him if he survived and he agreed to but his execution was kept secret from the public so kira didn't know about it and fell for his plan that narrowed him down to a region in japan instead of possibly the entire world...or when he kills ray pember an innocent man that was going to stop following him after being told to thinking he was not kira that light out of anxious fear killed which made L even more suspicious of him that pretty much made him the only suspect and thus got him to committ more murders of innocent people..plus ryuk from day 1 states he will end up writing light's name in his notebook so in the end this will lea to his end so hes kind a martyr in the end and accepts it anyways..he also has a god complex and fears being caught so yeah hes not really correct..but yes in the end the original idea of is killing bad people wrong is up for interpretation and not answered as justice is whoever wins so near and L won so in the end ther side of thinking which is the standard normalcy we have chosen to live under in the free world is upheld....but the person who is kira's morality is not up for debate.. hes evil...and what he did in the end to cover his ass is also evil..killing innocents just cause they will catch him is wrong..he should be okay after 5 years getting caught..he did real good in the world...at least in japan...but hes far gone..its about being a god not doing good anymore..he feels being challenged after changing the meaning of what true justice is, is insulting to him

      They probably just leave it up to the people who's watching it to decide on what's your type of justice they believe in. leaving the moral obligation up to the viewers that's why I find it funny when people try to use previous philosophers just because they may be right, why people not trying to figure your moral stance by not letting you be swayed by other people's beliefs.

    You left out possibly the most philosophical question of the whole show. Before Matsuda kills light, Light asks him "what are you going to do, kill me? Is that REALLY the right thing to do?" I love this line because not only does it point out lights obvious hypocrisy, but it also illustrates Matsudas. By killing light, it only shows that lights vision of justice has merit after all, and that Matsuda has just done what lights been doing, the very thing he's been hunting for years. The climax of the show is an interesting paradox as well. Killing is wrong, but killing light would save a lot of people, but Light killing criminals would also save a lot of (innocent) people. Someone has to die, and that in itself basically highlights humanity's deceit, like you were saying in the beginning, justice only matters when we are being scrutinized or at risk of being judged by our peers.

    • @ThatGuy-tx4vm

      The hard truth is that like with most things, our nature is what true justice is. Everything else is an additive that came from men who wanted control, power, influence or functionality in society. At our most basic, every living thing has the same justice system. Assuming they have a working mind and emotions to help. That justice is that if you hurt me then i hurt you the same way. If you hurt me fatally and therefore i can do nothing about it, then someone else has to come and do the same to you. That is original, biological human justice. The passage of time has created many things that were not part of our initial mind as a species. Law as justice being one of them. Other examples include food that hurts us more than organic food does, hormone blockers that stop our bodies natural formation simply because of the way we think about ourselves and maybe in the future, like in dystopian films, we wont even have natural births anymore. It is my belief that having a brain as evolved as humans comes at a price. Every positive has to have a negative side too. Sure, we can think, adapt, improve and grow as a species. But it is also this same growth that hurts us in the long run. It is no wonder that places like dubai are much safer to live in than the paragons of morality that are western europe and the US. Tradition doesn't have it's merits because our ancestors were smarter... It has merits because we were more in line with our biological roots.

    • @ThatGuy-tx4vm
      @ThatGuy-tx4vm ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There is just one problem with laws. They are made by people with agendas, more than a few people working together to decide what is right. But amidst those discussions may come personal experiences, interests etc. On the one hand these things make the laws applicable to many moralities, but on the other hand they completely remove the "taboo" option. For example, laws on incarceration and execution all are based on preventability and reform. If someone does not represent a continued risk for society then the law is more lenient on them... But this only accounts for the logical and rational part of morality. Most laws fail to include personal stakes in them, if a parent loses a child to murder then the lawmakers cannot apply rationality and simply give a rational sentence. A rational sentence does nothing for the family that was affected, it mostly helps others that are yet to be affected.

      Matsuda's logic has been pushed aside by Ide towards the end of Death Note (manga). Matsuda, questioned whether the world without Kira is "better" and still believed and supported that "Kira is Justice" with his reasoning. But, Ide told him that if N didn't stopped Kira and Kira succeeded in creating his "Justice World", Matsuda and all the other investigation members will be killed under Kira's Death Note (to silence them all for once in their doubt of Kira). Thus, if Kira is alive and Matsuda is killed under Kira in his version of world, although Matsuda is not by any means a criminal in Kira's standard, does that make Kira a better option in performing justice on others? The answer is "Kira is not justice" and the world he created (if he won) is an oppression of people's personal opinion of what justice supposed to be applied since only Kira's justice is the real one (not the police, not the people). L was saying this the first time around, so was N later on.

    Yea so when they said "I am justice" there was a grammar detail. In Japanese, there are some points that you can emphasize through words. When Yagami says "I am justice" he uses "boku" which carries the emphasis on "I" but when L says "I am justice" he does not use it, so the emphasis stays on the "justice"

    • @kagenohikari8

      Both "boku" and "watashi" (which is what L uses) basically mean the same. "Boku" is used by males, mostly in casual conversation. "Watashi" is the formal 'I' used in polite language, it's the one taught in schools. If L was supposed to be a foreigner, it'd make sense to use 'Watashi'.

      Kira would be justice, only if he would kill himself at the end of his goal of providing "new world ruled by justice". Because killing people is an injustice, and if we want to be honest, we would have to bring our injustice selfs to provide true justice.
      L would be justice, only if he would stand in face of all people, who now suffer due to acts of criminals who brought on them the pain because Kira couldn't kill them as L is responsible for stopping him.

    Light/Kira seems to represent the view that it is okay to sacrifice morality, individual freedom and liberty for the sake of overall security and order.
    It is interesting though, because L is willing to show a similar disregard for morality with his at-any-costs attitude and his willingness to conduct his investigation outside the law. He constantly clashes with the uncompromisingly lawful Mr. Yagami, and the naively moralistic Matsuda.
    I think part of the idea of the show is just a look at what happens when misunderstood geniuses with huge egos get bored. The whole plot gets started in the first place because of boredom. Light, L, M and N all get fixated on the concept of winning arbitrary victories against other geniuses. When it comes to the possibility of winning, the body count of those lesser than them becomes secondary to all of them. This is most obviously seen with M, but even L and N show some disregard to civilian casualties. We even see Light become bored after L is gone because there is no one to compete with. In the end, N wins the battle not because of justice, but because he beat Light and surpassed L.
    After all this has happened, the world keeps turning and justice returns to how it was before Kira. Ryuk goes back to his boring world, and N gets his victory, but now he's out of people to compete with, so he'll be just as bored as Ryuk.

      There are so many ideas to this story.
      L plays the usual detective role in a story, He wants to return things to how they were before the crimes. This is his function, and yeah he goes to extreme lengths, but we understand him, so we understand the extremes he is willing to go. Likewise with Light, though his character is a bit more complex. (He is the character that drives the plot)
      To put simply, his function is to raise high so we can watch him fall.
      While the plot does start off boredom, it is more Ryuuk's thing, his motive for dropping a death note into the human world.
      While it could be said, and is said Light could be bored. It is his disgust at the world around him that is highlighted.
      Death note could literally be looked at, as a show about, justifying you reasoning.

Machiavellianism and narcissism are prevailing in both characters, willing to do anything to win the psychological battle. At first Kira's motivation to whipe out bad guys is what it keeps him going on. From a "machiavellian" point of the ends justify the means he went straight to a megalomaniac "i am a god" narcissism. Then you have L with an autistic spectrum, very socially awkward but very bright. So of course it would make sense for Light to take precautions and use the Death Note to do things that are convenient for him in order for him to evade the police and pursue his goal of a perfect world. But this is where Light's morality goes into more of a grey area as it it's clear that he views it as a game and each of his successes gives him a power trip and only boosts his ego to the point he thinks of himself as a literal god. In short, in the beginning it was about justice for Light but in the end it only became about *his* idea of a perfect world and whatever measure it would take for him to create that perfect world.

      Light definitely cared about justice, he wouldn't have felt remorse for killing like he did for shibuimaru or even second guessed himself about justice, he also himself calls out his ally mikami teru later on when has the sentiment of killing people who are complacent in "evil" saying that he's taking things too far
      The Power aspect came in later on and only played a minor factor at the beginning
      Lights main motivational factor was boredom, the same thing that motivated ryuk
      He was bored of his perfect and uninteresting life same as ryuk was boring of his dull and unchanging one in the shinigami realm
      Light wanted to escape his boredom and the death note and cat and mouse game between him and L was his escape plan, this is why light didn't just sit in his room killing criminals where he couldn't be caught but instead chose to lead L towards him by allowing him to deduce he was both a student and connected to someone with access to police information
      He did all that to get close to L so that he could beat him in the game of pride

    one theme you didn't address here and that seems important too is the theme of good and evil: does a crime condemn you for your whole life and means you have to die or can it be redeemed, cured? Light thinks he can bring peace by killing the "bad guys" and not by chasing the very societal reasons those persons became criminals in the firts place, which is very moralizing and totally wrong IMO. On the other hand, you have L who fights the biggest criminal of all times with sometimes very crude/borderline cruel method. The protagonist of the show is a killer! Morals and the (blurred) concepts of good and evil seem paramount!

    • @sophial7261
      @sophial7261 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Actually, after you watch the arc with Mikami, the differences between his and Kira's ideals get highlighted. While Mikami is focused on retribution, killing former criminals even if they've turned over a new leaf, Kira dissaproves of this (which means that yes, in Kira's eyes, criminals can redeem themselves). It is also clear from the series that Kira's morals are based on utilitarianism, and whether or not you agree with utilitarianism, he is acting in the most efficient way that will allow the most people to live. I guess what I'm trying to say is that your argument against him is faulty. How would he even try to prevent societal reasons that causes someone to become a criminal? Answer that, and you might have an argument. But until then, killing active criminals are saving the largest amount of people, and your argument has no logical ground.

    Isn’t Light’s ideal of justice just a reaction of injustice too? He starts off killing people who’ve caused injustice in the world and those who mean to expose him are a threat to his justice. Threatening justice is a viable excuse to call the act of trying to catch Light an injustice. When people have done an injustice they should be punished and the person who was wronged should be compensated in some way, that’s why we have a justice system, (still the justice system can be corrupt or biased). This brings in the questions ‘what serves as good punishment?’ And ‘who is to blame?’. Les Miserables also tackles these questions. Stealing a loaf of bread is an injustice to the baker therefore Valjean should be punished, however if Louis Philippe wasn’t so shitty at economics then the economy wouldn’t have been in such bad condition that people needed to resort to stealing in the first place. Also, the punishment Valjean got was so much worse than the crime he committed and it didn’t fix anything about the crime or what led up to it.
    Sorry about trailing off on Les Mis, I just wanted to leave a comment and see what people thought of it. I’ve only recently finished this show, so I hope a few people still want to talk about it😊

    • @Matt-ww9wv
      @Matt-ww9wv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@barney1942 That's why Light is wrong. He's wrong for the same reasons the death penalty is wrong. Humans are not omniscient. People can be innocent despite our best efforts to determine their guilt. Killing innocent people on death row is always an injustice that can't be redeemed.
      That being said, consequentialism - which Kira absolutely would endorse - wouldn't necessarily completely care about things like that so long as the method achieves the intended results. Yes, killing those innocent people is wrong, but we're not perfect and the ends justifies the means to a consequentialist. In the real world, statistically death row doesn't deter murderers anyway so it's a loser strategy regardless. In Kira's world, the outcome was superior by that metric, however. From a consequestialist's perspective wising to reduce crime, in Kira's world, he was correct.
      I personally would take a more consequentialist line similar to Kira if I had the deathnote. I wouldn't proclaim myself as justice although I would try my best acknowledging my faults as I try to achieve similar results. I would still allow democracy to dictate, and if I had a secure method, I'd allow society to vote over the power too. I would primarily use the deathnote to extort people I deem above the law as a counterbalance to powerful people that curtail democracy with their influence. Our judicial system for petty crime is largely fine. Law for people at the absolute top is largely absent, however.

    Watching this analysis has just made me realize that Death Note is probably one of the few objectively good horror animes around, not in terms of shock and Gore, but for it's themes.
    One of the most common elements of the horror genre can sometimes be about the negative side and/or perversion of human nature (such as the common use of serial killers and such), so a show that asks the audience how far they'd be willing to go in the pursuit for their own idea of justice/morality and if it'd be to the point of destruction, it'd be somewhat within the subgenres of crime/psychological horror.
    EDIT: Just finished watching another video on a Death Note analysis, and it's pretty eye-opening!

      I don't believe it's a horror story at all but rather a story surrounding philosophy, ideals, and morality. Saying Death note is a psychological horror would be like saying Persona 5 with arguably the same story themes is a horror game, when it's very obviously not. They're both dramas if they were put into categories.

      That's a good point! I guess it might depend on each person's perspective and their own categorizations (such as how Light's actions and justifications for his actions might elicit horror or terror-like feelings, and for other audiences it might not). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
      I'll admit I might have projected on it when I originally wrote that comment from my own interests (I like watching a lot of horror movies/shows). ^^;

    6:10 I think one of the critical things to note here is that Light never felt truly happy once he acquired the death note. He *thought* he was happy, he *said* he was happy, but that was a lie to convince himself that what he was doing was right. At the end of the show, he realizes his shallow *fun* has cost him real happiness. In addition, Kira was never "chosen", as Ryuk points out. Light made up a narrative to justify what he was doing. He was never motivated by wanting to make the world a better place: he was motivated by disgust for his fellow beings, but primarily, centrally, he was motivated by boredom with a life that didn't challenge him.

      Power doesn't change you, power only shows who you really are. The Death Note did not change Light, it only revealed how egotistical he really is to be to make an exciting life. 'Justice' is just a rationalization for his desire of being seen as a "God" as Kira. 'Injustice' is just a rationalization for his hatred of going back to a "boring" life as Light Yagami.

Death Note's themes are easily its best quality, as it dives deeply into existentialism, justice, hubris, corruption, etc. While justice wasn't my favorite theme of the show, it's definitely the one that was most apparent (on the surface level). I love how rather than taking a stance, Death Note basically shows that there is no objectively correct answer as to what is justice or as to what is morally right. It paints both Light and L's views on justice, and it lets you decide which you prefer...

    • @jays3652
      @jays3652 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @James Lucas My favorite theme would probably be Light's hubris/corruption, which I found to be very reminiscent of a greek tragedy. I think it was simply the best handled, by the many ways it was displayed. Its obvious that the notebook is a thing that serves to bolster Light's hubris (namely with his God Complex), and it works to corrupt him over the course of the show. He lies to countless individuals, and constantly kills, while treating others like pawns. The normalization of this behaviour would lead to the very psychopathic nature of Light by the end of the story. Then this theme is handled beautifully, as it directly leads to his defeat. Once again similar to how in Greek tragedies, the hero would be defeated by their fatal flaw, which usually was also hubris. The way in which light's hubris and corruption leads to his defeat is brilliant. As his overconfidence causes him not to view Near as a threat and grow hasty in his plan to eliminate his enemies. Also, remember that it was Mikami who messed up and revealed the location of the real death note. Light failed to account for this fairly obvious action by Mikami, because he was so corrupted and arrogant, seeing everyone around him as mindless pawns, who would never betray his orders. Idk I just found this to be very brilliant, and it made me enjoy the show far more than I did before.

    I personally value justice however honestly, if I had a death note, I'd likely do something similar to Light. I know that makes me a hypocrite as light's actions are NOT justice as he has to kill Innocents and doubters to get his way. I'm o ly saying that I don't know if I'd be able to 100% handle the power the death note brings. In short, if I was in L's position and had to capture Kira, I would do so as Kira's actions are not justice. However, if I was in Lights position and had the death note, I'd likely do what light did. Would I have to kill Innocents? Perhaps but there's also a side of me that says that the ends justify the means. This is why I love death note as when I was first watching it, it made me question myself more than the show.

      Light did not have to kill the FBI dudes. First it let L narrow down the amount of suspects immensely and anyways the FBI dude raye penber was about to report that Light was clear of being Kira. If he didnt kill raye penber for no reason, he would have delayed the investigation. After he killed raye penber it forced light to kill his fiance.
      As a result L puts cameras in Lights house and that where the behaviour of Light first caught L's glimpse. L smiled when he realized. Thats when L started to suspect Light. As events went on L knew Light was Kira but just needed concrete evidence. As you could see when L wanted to test the rules of the death note. He knew Light was Kira

    I actually asked a question recently to a bunch of friends. I asked if they had to press a button that would kill a random family of theirs or 1 that would kill 6 billion people from another galaxy that we would never come into contact with. What would they do. Suprising to me but appearantly not to others was most chose to kill the 6 billion. Giving the justification "I just love my family that much". The even stated that I was crazy and weird for stating otherwise. I then proceeded to ask why their love was worth more than the lives of 6 billion people. They replied, that those people had no effect on their lives or those around them. I feel this is unjust and clerly selfish yet they seemed to disagree. Just curious to hear others opinions on the matter.

    • @Queen-ty1xz
      @Queen-ty1xz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      I think it matters what do you consider "people from another galaxy". Are they just like humans, but green? Are they self aware? Do they have values? If those answers were "yes", I think it would matter to most people if their values match the ones of human kind. Unfortunelly, this is something people would take into account, because people are less likely to feel ok with killing someone if they see themselves in that person. So if those aliens are culturally and socially very different from us, I think most people would be okay with pressing the button that kills the aliens. I honestly am not able to say what would I do.
      But I have something to make you think: have you watched "aliens"? (it's the sequel to alien, very clever, I know). In this movie there is a woman who is trying to save a child that she sees as her daughter as they are attacked by this evil race of murderous aliens. As they are trying to run away from them, this woman goes near the "mother" alien and sets a bunch of her eggs on fire. It gets the mother alien pissed and it tries to kill the humans. After all, it is a mother protecting her child from a mother who is protecting her children. Who the hell is right?? (I know this isn't like the question you made, but thinking about aliens in a relative way, reminded me of this question. If you have never watchd aliens, I recommend it, by the way)

      Queen actually i made i told the people at the time that these were basically humans exactly like us but just somewhere where it wouldn't affect us. I just find that it's too often we treat our love for the people around us as something that makes a selfless, the whole "I would ..... for my (family/friends)" While I do greatly love and appreciate my family and friends. I think in the end we're just putting our emotions ahead not those people. Why should our emotions matter more than all those we may hurt just in order to save someone we've built a connection to. I don't think there is a set number. However if you were to view life as to have a objective value and affection to have another. Than I say 6 billion or for that matter even 10 lives should rise above affection. Whenever I evaluate my morals I think if the entire world thought like me how good/bad would the world be. If everyone was willing to kill thousands for their brother or sister. Than if one high up went crazy and decided to kill someone or even accidentally saved. It may cause a war or at least another few deaths. An eye for an eye is often said to be a bad mentality, what people aren't realizing this 'love' of those close to us is an eye for a million. Anyways thanks for the movie recommend definitely will check it out when I have the time.

      Bored on TH-cam, I'll try to answer your question with a story I heard in a Professional Ethics class once.
      See, our class almost had a riot over the Trolley Problem, so our professor told us a story about a former student of his. The student had been a war-time journalist before he had decided to change jobs and ended meeting the professor for a Professional Ethics class. However, this student HATED the Trolley Problem, which is a situation where you have a choice to either directly kill someone (via various method) to save other lives or you can leave the situation how it is and let the other people die, which would be your fault, but either way there's no consquences and you have to see the people who would die from it.
      Well, the professor ended up asking why the student hated the Trolley Problem. The student told him that it went back to when he was a journalist in a war-torn country. The student was bought over by soldiers one day at a random small village - well, at the time, he lucked out since one of the soldiers liked Americans, knew English, and "gave him a shot to be a big shot" by handing him a gun to shot one of the villagers. Supposedly, the soldier would have let the rest of them go. Well, the journalist tried but found he couldn't shot and handed back the gun to the soldier. After that, the soldiers made him watch as all the villagers were mowed down by gunfire. Understandably, he decided to change jobs after that. I never heard what happened to the soldiers involved, but I have to assume they were never punished for their actions.
      Basically, the point I'm trying to make by telling you this story is that most people would have an easier time harming/killing others if they don't know them and/or can depersonalize them mentally. Basically, most people would have a harder time killing any family member due to them knowing the person - the alternate reality people would be easier for most people since it doesn't affect them at all.

    OK, let's chat about the end:
    Light fails because Mikami makes a mistake. That's disappointing. Light is kinda proven right in his control freaky ways, and he was undone by not micromanaging his subordinates...
    hmmmmmmm...
    but Light also screams out for help from Takada and Mikami when he's desperate and injured, suggesting that he needed people all along but didn't let anyone properly into his inner circle.
    Then there's the final shot of Amani on a train alone. Light's first Ally. The only person that wasn't there in the warehouse. The only survivor.

The idea of complete anonymity is quintessentially, absolute social power, and so it does not matter how good a character you are when people are watching, given enough time you too would fall into morbid hedonism just like me and everyone else. Maybe because we are born in and taught by a world that's very much nihilistic in itself, we ultimately cannot reliably wield otherworldly powers? The reason that's not often seen in real life is because, very rarely, if ever, does it happen for someone's reputation to be permanently and irreversibly off the table. All of us wield some varying modicum of social power and rise up to it in different extents.

    After 6 years, by rewatching it recently i think the main point is that: however good of a person or your intentions may be unrestricted power will corrupt your good self and turn you to what you despised... I mean imagine this: you start wanting to do the right thing and when things don't go as planned you let some bad actions slip ever so slightly adding up over time leading you doing a crime (assuming you have unrestricted power or not monitored by anyone with consequences). What I've taken from this is that nothing can be perfect and we shouldn't be concerned to an obsessive level or get mad about things that are wrong or don't align with our views. Especially for things we can't change or influence

      Elfos64 Code Geass is about a group of racist Lunatics reigning with their dominance over the world establishing themselves as provider of True Justice and Lelouch being a bit of a hypocritical psychopath begs the obvious question and rebelling against dictatorship with the societal definition of Democracy and freedom which is actually an excuse to just try to create a war less world (or at least Japan) so that Nunally can be in the exact same position as she was before....... And still blind.

    Kira’s concept of justice wasn’t evil , in fact I agree with his philosophy about how some criminals deserve death. However , Kira wasn’t after justice , he was after power. He loved the idea of being a god and wanted to prove that he can out smart and kill who ever gets in his way. He didn’t live by any kind of ethical code , he would kill/ manipulate anyone to remain in power. He was always in constant battle with himself , justifying every evil action he takes.

    I’m so glad you dedicated a portion of this video to Matsuda, who acts as an in between for the two moralities, rather than JUST Light and L and their supporters. People often overlook the value he adds to the plot and the story, taking him as a face value comedic relief character, rather than someone who provides a conversation and an honest perspective of the “justice” that goes on in the show.

  • @UltimateVegetto
    @UltimateVegetto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +393

    Basically, my central issue with Kira is that he does nothing to alleviate the issues that cause crime in the first place. If the world was full of Hannibal Lecters, then yes, Kira would be just. But it isn't. Most crimes are committed by people in a horrible place, who have suffered greatly and see no other means of leading their life than crime. Increase the living standards and you will decrease crime rates. All Kira does is make these people suffer more silently. And his justice gets even more murky when he starts murdering "amoral" people without ever specifying what constitutes amorality or even questioning his inherent believes about amorality.

    • @rahuljphilip
      @rahuljphilip 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      UltimateVegetto.
      Kira believes in using fear - death by heart attack as the ultimate deterrent. I think it could work if criminals are actually scared of a force like Kira lurking around; hardened criminals don't suffer silently, they die before the world and people realise that there is a quasi-moral force judging them. Religion has operated in the same way for thousands of years.
      Where Kira loses me is when he puts himself in harm's way by letting his ego get the best of him - and trying to fight against L and the task force [but then there would be no entertainment if he didn't!]. An ultimate power like the death note is something that could work - but if we have a truly moral human that does it as a completely selfless act, making sure that no innocents are killed.

      +UltimateVegetto - Your observation isn't entirely correct. Highest crime rates are in the places where inequality between people is the highest. (socioeconomic status) Rest of your point still stands. Very few criminals commit crimes just for malevolences sake. Most of criminals are regular people on a rough stretch.

      1 he has a god complex
      2 he is using fear (and he believes in it, you do not, I agree with you, but just saying)
      3 he might not care. Let those ppl die off, let them be unfortunate, the world will balance off eventually, maybe there will even be decreases in population or some sort of indirect negativities but that rather proves Kira's absolute impact.
      Like wisecrack says, he values the ends, not the means.

    I made the same comparison between The Lord of the Rings and Death Note, but in the sense that Light and Gollum both develop a craving for their individual materialistic abilities. For Light; the notebook and its ability to administer his sense of justice. For Gollum; the power of the ring to dominate the will of others. What they both longed for ended up being their demise.

    Crime is a symptom of an inequitable economic system and an indifferent society. Light doesn't understand that killing criminals isn't going to end the problems that produce them. There's a difference between actual psycho/sociopaths who need to be removed if they can't be rehabilitated and people like you and me who are either in a state of poverty and desperation or have been pushed to the dark part of their psyche through trauma or long term suffering. Forgiveness is the answer, not punishment.

    I'd like to offer a different outtake on this whole thing:
    What Light/Kira seeks isn't 'Justice', it's more like 'Order'.
    As a comparison allow me to bring up the character of Odo from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
    In that show, Odo often times talks about a need to uphold 'justice', but more often than night what he more actually works towards is 'order', a mindset he inherited (unknowingly) from his people, the Changelings (or Founders).And the Changelings, fear 'solids' (or basically humanoid lifeforms) and so seek to bring their 'order' to the galaxy, at ANY cost and using ANY means they deem necessary.
    The difference though between the other Changelings (and Light/Kira) is that Odo actually DOES truly want 'justice' and honestly learns to care about other 'solids' in his experiences during the show's run. I'm GROSSLY simplifying here, mind, there's SO much more to it than that, but even so, I hope folks understad.
    The 'justice' Light/Kira wants is 'order', much like the Changelings want. A world/galaxy that is under his/their control. One where everyone knows their place, everyone knows that acting out in any way gets you punished, they learn to stay where they are, lest a 'god' strike you down, as it were. Order, stability, unchanging, and under his/their control, nothing more, nothing less.

    • @SuzakuX

      I'd argue that Light is actually a narcissitic sociopath who uses "justice" as a _justification_ for his murder spree. Many serial killers are motivated by a warped sense of morality. At his core, he cares more about the thrill of the game and his fame as Kira than about any sort of justice.

    • @DerpsGW
      @DerpsGW 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree, mostly because L does not want this. There's a definite parallel made between L and Light/Kira and a sense of 'order' is not something L is looking for. The video outlines it pretty well that L is a response to injustice while Light comes from a place of altruistic justice.
      I've seen both shows, so I'm not talking out of my ass. I feel you're making a false equivalence here. I feel that order/stability is a consequence of Kira's actions, but not is direct intent. His direct intent is to impose his opinion of justice on the world in order to make a better place. The fact that L does not want this shows that it is not the direct struggle of the show.

    What light seems to not understand is that most criminals aren't just doing illegal things for fun. Not every criminal is Jeffery Dahmer. They are usually in a bad place and forced into a corner by hard scenerios and times. I know people like that.

    • @andresarancio6696
      @andresarancio6696 6 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      Ligth is an odd case. He seems to act on a very black and white Kantian logic of "people should do what is just and those who don't must be punished". No matter the why, just the fact you broke the law. However, his actions are definetely utilitarian. "The net result of my actions is justice so I am just even if I commit the crime of homicide".
      So it is kind of clear that Light is an hypocrite. Or just so obsessed about his power that he stopped caring about thinking through the meaning of his justice.

      jeff jefferson and mostly important, what is the definition of a criminal in Light's mind? His view of justice is just merely based on what the State says so? If someone who makes something "bad" to another person, but that thing is not considered a crime, like some psychological abuse idk, than that person does not deserve to be judge by Light's hand? I think the show should have explored more this subject, it would be much more philosophically deep

      Andres Arancio For sure. Thing is though the law is the EXACT same, it asks no questions. You broke it? Well ok, we'll give you a trial and that's it irrigardless of your unique scenario, unless you have the fortune of someone showing you mercy, you're done for. Not that I'm on lights side, but its the same end but Lights motivations were bad.
      He started out killing people that were clearly doing things to others that were deplorable, like the guy pushing himself on the lady (which you can argue was used in defense of someone else), but that devolved to anyone that gets in my way which is proud and arrogant. He was about to kill L because he got scared, but if he turned himself in he might've been let off since, c'mon... A notebook from another world? And L just wanted to solve the case, Light more than likely on trail would've won or gotten a, ehem... Light sentence.

      If there is anything I've learned in life it's that there are very awful environments that make people think very awful things, and that everyone thinks they are justified in whatever they do even if they don't realize it. Nobody does something they think is wrong without having it philosophically justified even subconsciously. We all have our own personal ideologies even if we don't know or care what they are.
