this show did a really good job of portraying a really smart mc, and yet showing his downfall in a way that felt really natural. I enjoyed scenes like this that showed how intelligent Light and L were. this was a truly great scene
I don't think his downfall was natural at all. It kind of played on and used the excuse that he got too cocky and to some degree that's true, but I feel that a lot of Light's thoroughness, attention to detail, and overall intelligence was thrown out the window so that the ending could happen. Even aside from all that, Near pulled huge leads out of nowhere and the things that he was able to find out himself, he played way worse than L would've.
@@AnimeniacSimey the producers just wanted it to unecessarily be emotional, the writer didn't want to stretch the anime out after L's death. Near and Mello were honestly.. so garbage.
mrs madaeffer I honestly head canon Light as ace/aro, too absorbed in himself to ever give a damn about anyone else (not saying normal ace/aro people act like that, Light is just socio)
Spoilers, Man! Edit: oh my comment became kinda popular, then I saw that you were face palming at me 😆, to clear up the misunderstanding, yes I have seen the anime and read the manga, I was just joking.
Honestly, Lights greatest advantage in his plan, wasn't his intellect in my mind, it was his charisma, and ability to sway people into believing him. He couldn't outsmart L directly, so he got other to do things. He got Rem to kill L, he swayed to task force to work for him, his ability to manipulate people, and get them on his side, was his single greatest advantage over L.
There is no way light is behind L in terms of being smart. Ofcourse, he's a bit arrogant, as someone who thinks of themselves as a God would, but parrotting a youtuber and saying he was less smart shows your intellect.
No, you completely wrong. Light smartest character in Death Note. Smarter than L. This scene is proof for my words. And throughout the anime Light showed more intelligent feat than L. L's intelligent feat is only 2 episode. That's all. Light outsmarts L. Light > L in everything.
@@Chhjmmkg it depends on what you define as "intelligence" that l is better at analysing situations and light better at analysing people (although they both certainly are quite skilled at both) is a fact, its a recurring theme. if that makes either less or more intelligent then the other is a debate on how to define intelligence, not on death note

I think L would actually catch Light if he worked alone, because each time Light did something suspicious the policemen working with him were like: "Oh come on.. Light can't be Kira" 🤔
@@gokuonly3483 there's no right and wrong in death note you can patronize either light or L. Maybe that's the reason none of them won when they fought against each other. Before anyone says light won because l died, the battle was to find name of the other and eliminate them, light eliminated L but didn't find out his name, L while dying saw light smiling and l's dying was conformation to him that light is kira. The scoreboard read 1-1
i loved deathnote because whenever Kira threw up smokescreens, he actually narrowed down the suspects, and while it's easy to make it feel like he's fighting a losing battle, the show makes it clear how logically gifted Kira is, only to then show that he either digs his own grave with is arrogance, or fails to act natural (like the contradiction of hour long studying combined with hiding porn in encyclopedias). when L outsmarts Kira, it feels earned, not cheap.
@@paddywall8531 I think he's trying to say that by hiding something in an encyclopedia like that, it shows to L that Light does deceptive things like that and makes even the little things he does like leaving his hand in a bag of potato chips for a second too long more suspect than they otherwise would be
@@paddywall8531 Dudes who spend time reading porn mags and hiding them from their folks are not usually the kind of person to study for hours and hours without a single break or complaint. If Light wanted to be convincing, he would goof off a bit, watch some TV, read a comic. Maybe even groan aimlessly at the ceiling or get frustrated at a problem. Light's portrayal of "just studying" is perfect. It's JUST studying.
Just remember that Light beat L because a Shinigami broke its own rules to save a human, if Misa had Ryuk 2 as her Shinigami, L would have easily made it
@@animezia Duval's point is that if Rem NEVER fell in love with Misa in the first place or if Rem died/never saw Misa and the Shinigami who threw the second Death Note was just someone who wanted to stir shit like Ryuuk, then both Misa and Light would have been dead. Light's plan HINGES on a supernatural creature being in love with Misa, who in turn is obsessed with HIM.
@@fabmc8816 Misa no longer remembered L's real name and L was already suspicious. Plus, if the second Shinigami was a shit-stirrer like Ryuuk, then chances are L would have figured out the Shinigami eyes thing and made sure Misa would have traded 50% of her life for nothing (which, at this point, means that Misa would be left with a 1/4 of her remaining lifespan since this would be her second time asking for them)
@@irondragonmaiden I think it's wrong to assume that why because first of all if the rule is wrong it doesn't mean light is kira , maybe the shinigami wrote it to manipulate people , also the whole plan was put due to misa intervention in the story before that light was barely a suspect , let alone the fact that light actually wanted that , getting closer to l that's why he informed him that kira knows police info ,he could just use those info about kira as student by keeping the same times as school student 2 or 3 years in that case it would be near to impossible to even suspect anyone except for intelligence only
nah, he was fucked the moment he threw the police off by killing people 23 times a day, that got them to suspect that it was a relative of a police officer, it narrowed it down by a shit ton
no even before that. he already had it in him but it started to really kick in when he got the death note. and I don't get how no one talks about how he actually tested the death note in the beginning. but lets be honest if this would've happened to us we'd be like wait what if someone actually dies like even if its impossible but what if? I would not write in it imagining someone to die. that already is crazy to me. it REALLY started to kick in when he killed L Tayor because he killed him out of selfish reasons not because he is a harm to the world (in his eyes).
The most concerning thing about L to me is how he never get cramp, even though his seating position is always as it is. Like, I sit like that sometimes (just by habit) and yet end up with cramp... how does he do it?
But honestly, the show had huge flaws. It's much more likely for something like the Illuminati to exist rather than a single human with superpowers, so it'd make more sense to think that there's a whole organization behind the killing rather than a single person (and L believing the opposite seems like a forced push forward for the story). More than that, it's more likely that there's a god behind these events, and that people would start a religion rather than a personification over the killing cause. Besides, Light makes several really-dumb decisions, which don't suit the brilliance he's introduced with.
@@justsomeone5314 if i remember correctly Kira did get some sort of religious following in the form of Kira worshipers. also, even if they did assume it was an organization they would still have to assume superpowers seeing as light did straight up murder a dude on TV through death note magic. other than that, u rite dood u rite. (i realize now that you posted like 8 months ago and probably don't care but i've typed this now so whatever)
@@andresodeberg799 I love Death Note. I just don't think that the events follow each-other in a sensible manner. The cult following Light had made sense, but from the get-go L was looking for a single human being. If I were the detective and had to assume that it's all human-origin, I wouldn't bother looking for high-schoolers, and even if it made sense for such power to be in one person's hands, aren't there a shit-ton of jobs which start at the morning and end afternoon? (high-school teachers, for obvious example). Sure, I'm not brilliant like L, but I think that's something Sherlock Holmes would do too - find general info and narrow everything down to a secretive group which poisons its victims on more than 1 site. Super-powers has to be the last guess for 2 reasons: 1) They supposedly don't exist 2) If they do exist, it'd be quite impossible to overcome, so if you have to bet - it might be your worst option to bet on. If Light would have just laughed-off the threats he was given on TV, they'd never get a lead on him.
@@justsomeone5314 okay so i just rewatched the second episode and one guy theorises that it's probably an organization that is behind the killings but then they just assume it's one person that is ''kira'' anyway so i'll give you that one chief. I do still think super-powers are a fair assumption since the Death Note doesn't give a ''reason'' for the heart attack, by witch i mean if you performed an autopsy on a Death Note heart attack victim there would be seemingly no cause (wich is why i guess that noone suspected poison) and again the live TV scene is pretty damning evidence of supernatural (if not 𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭) forces at play. obviously L knew Kira was a high-schooler because he is friends with the script writer and knows who to suspect to move the plot forward /s
@@andresodeberg799 I agree with your view on the Death Note being a super-power source, but in my view it's extremely unlikely for an investigator / detective to not rule it out. Even during the Cold War, as Western politicians were killed without trace of any poison, people suspected that Soviet agents were behind those deaths. Eventually they found out that the Soviets had developed poisons which vanish from the victim's body within hours, but the important thing to note here is that super-natural explanations were never a consideration or part of an examination, even as there was no other explanation. Regarding the TV scene, trying this trick out means that L suspected that the source of the "attacks" were from a certain area, and he thought for some reason that the person (again, not God, quite an unlikely bet) who killed all of the criminals would also kill someone who's taunting him on TV. For all the wisdom we see Light displaying, killing L's impersonator wasn't only immoral, but also stupid (and if Light's ego was really that high, he'd just laugh at the pathetic "mere-human" detective who thinks he can catch him. He's not a criminal, why kill him?). Anyway, the heart-attack victim (L's impersonator) could have been in on the deal (a willing sacrifice for the organization), or could have been killed in some other cunning way (example: the U.S. military had developed (long ago) a wave transmitter which induces pain at a specifically-aimed target. It can cause people to wriggle in pain seemingly without explanation. Imagine this being used on "high voltage" - you could kill people without touching them, and stay undetected to the human sensory). The jump to the super-natural explanation is just ridiculous for a detective; it's like seeing a magic trick and concluding that magic is real because the trick seems authentic. Obviously the show can't drag for 20 more episodes about L chasing other loose ends, but seeing him narrow-in on Light that quickly felt like cheating. Usually, as L got closer to proving Light's guilt, it was due to Light's mistake or carelessness, and I think it's a better approach than "I have a hunch that he's a high-schooler". Usually, people dislike the last 3rd of the show after L's death - maybe they just liked L, but I for one liked the show better with L in it because it felt more like a fight of outsmarting the other rather than a tug at emotions. It's best demonstrated at the end; Light says he knows what his rival wants to do... in that case, what would have been his best action? Well, in my view, it's: NOTHING! Light's rival got nothing on him, so not doing anything would put him in a tight-spot ("you called us all here to waste our time?"). Light technically also conquered the world by this point, so if he ever had a plan of revealing himself as humanity's God, he should have done so instead of staying a hidden detective - he could even order the arrest of Mello and Near; they really had no power against him as the God of crime-banishment. In my conclusion: Death Note is an interesting thriller, and its scenes were artistically stunning (example: the end showing Misa in depression...) but it trades its realism for easier progression. While it's probably a smart move, knowing many people would barely follow any smaller detail, it overstayed its welcome, as the second half felt stretched (you can't just rush a story and then keep it stagnant). The simplification we've discussed seems like a bigger issue as people consider Death Note a serious detective anime; it's representing a sector which it's unworthy of...
Rocky Chen just a small que..that mini tv is too inside in that pack of chips..so how did light manage to concentrate on their faces and read their names?
Light’s successful killing of L was still really smart on his part. He knew how devoted Rem was to Misa and used her sloppy Kira work to force Rem’s hand to kill L. It wasn’t particularly genius like some of L’s plans, but it’s masterful manipulation on multiple fronts.
I just finished watching it today, and I wish I had watch it a lot earlier. What I’d give to watch this again for the first time, like damn. The writing is absolutely insane, and the entire anime constantly kept me on edge. It’s definitely a masterpiece.
5 best moments for me 5. “I want to tell you I’m L” 4. DELETE DELETE DELETE DELEEEETE 3. The busjacking 2. Light kills Lind L Tailor 1. The Potato Chip scene
That gave me a good laugh. I didn't realize it when I watched the show initially, but seeing it pointed out in this video made it very "Tom & Jerry" for me.
Brynn Hill Yeah, as a kid I started noticing such things in animated shows eventually and then I always felt like they were spoiling stuff for me whenever it repeated ;b
I remember the first time I noticed this in a show. It was a log on bugs bunny I think. Someone was shoving a bunch of them through a saw and there was one which was off color on the ground and I just waited for that one to be picked up.
It actually took me a second watch of the clip to notice that the cabinet was different. They blended the color in better than most instances of "the one item meant to be animated"; the main thing that gives it away is the cabinet handle. :p Although, looking directly at the cabinet for a moment rather than Light also makes it really obvious it's a different color.
Correct. According to my esitmation, potato chip bags have an average internal atmospheric composition of approximately 25% chips and 75% AIR. Thus, due to the outwardly bulky nature of the normally amorphous container, it would be logical only to assume that there was an unknown component added to said potato chip bag, consequently aiding the suspect in his pursuit of the perfect alibi. Suspicions could have been easily concluded and Light should have been apprehended within 15 minutes. lmaoooo im high af

One other thing about the eating of the chip itself. Despite what some might argue, one of the contrasts between L and Kira is their degree of humanity. They both might be cold, detached, the-ends-justify-the-means type of geniuses, but L definitely has more of a conscience than Kira (the name of which I use to distinguish him from the memory-warped Light). Kira thinks himself a God who's above all social moral standards, which chips away at his humanity, perhaps due to a corruption from the notebook, your mileage may vary. Thus, the only time (that I can think of) we see him eat for PURE PLEASURE, a very human activity which L does all the time, is when he's pretending to be normal, as in "human."
2:10 "...narrows It down, to the Kanto region, of Japan. Suffice it, to say, he's pretty good..." Correction: The very best. Like no-one ever was. To catch Kira, is his real quest.
“This has become one of the most quoted and referenced lines not just in all of anime, but in all of media. Period.” LOL, alright, let’s calm down a little bit.
@@menheræ-chan Unless it is. Language is more descriptive than prescriptive, so it depends on how the term is used, not what someone said from a Google search. Not to mention the language. オタク and Otaku (as used by English speakers) have different nuances, but yes, both refer to people with similar traits of obsession with video games, anime, etc., to possibly unhealthy extents, but not always necessarily. Typically, like being a "nerd," it means be more of a social outcast, or someone who doesn't fit the norms in society. They can still be perfectly healthy and content with what they enjoy, even if it is different from a majority of people. And if "Google it" is the basis of your argument, then you are not really adding anything to the conversation.
The netflix version cuts some crucial information. In the original, Ryuk asked Light, what if someone else grabbed the bag? Light is the only one that eats consomme flavored chips. That is why when he grabbed the bag, it was very unique from the rest.
I dont really remember the anime well but i remember in the japenese live action movie (which i saw first before the anime), after that part, L finally met with Light and he purposely showed up eating the same chips and flavor that Light had. But only at the end was it that I realised I was still rooting for light when in my mind I was like please light please have a plan I don't want you to get caught! If it was L instead of near who caught light, I'd have definitely loved to watch who would won and honestly, it would have been exciting because in a way I loved them both so I had no preference b/w those 2 and if L had won, it would be so freaking awesome to see how that would unfold considering how amazing lights and Ls chemistry was! But although killing L kind of shaped Lights character even more, I think it could have been avoided because the moment he even considers killing him despite them having their moments, his character was already given the arc it needed. But then also its kinda sad how L knew everything even that he was gonna die and just could not do anything to stop it.. I kind of had the idea after light killed Naomi what his end was gonna be because he was no goodie boy anymore but I'd have liked to see his end by Ls hand and not his so called successor... Honestly if the series weren't to end, light wasn't that stupid not to think of a possibility that there could be a fake notebook and atleast not being careful especially if he was always so far sighted ( the amnesia part for eg who the hell is able to think that far, have their memories erased and still being able to win!!) But then again Naomi wasn't so stupid to show her name and give all info to a stranger like that but that happened either way! honestly, I've never seen any series killing so many main leads so wrecklessly and not bringing them back to life (tvd I'm looking at you) which is why I think this series is So unsettling and unexpected at times... And so unpredictable because despite having no suspense or secrets, you could just never expect what lights next moves gonna be and hed always manage to Shock you every time you'd think no he wouldn't do something like that and boom he'd do even worse and cross a new limit and damnn like it was so hard accepting that he'd kill innocents and even harder to actually force yourself to let his character take the shape of how he actually was..maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much damn I'm sorry if this is a rant but I'm just not used to these kind of protagonists and I just finished watching it yesterday so I'm still hungover rn!

this show did a really good job of portraying a really smart mc, and yet showing his downfall in a way that felt really natural.

Gotta say, blackmailing a Shinigami in a way that would ensure his death and the death of his biggest treat was one of his smartest moves.
He was the perfect manipulator😍
There is no way light is behind L in terms of being smart. Ofcourse, he's a bit arrogant, as someone who thinks of themselves as a God would, but parrotting a youtuber and saying he was less smart shows your intellect.
No, you completely wrong. Light smartest character in Death Note. Smarter than L. This scene is proof for my words. And throughout the anime Light showed more intelligent feat than L. L's intelligent feat is only 2 episode. That's all. Light outsmarts L. Light > L in everything.
@@Chhjmmkg it depends on what you define as "intelligence"

when L outsmarts Kira, it feels earned, not cheap.
I'm late but how is the encyclopedia thing and the studying a contradiction?
@@paddywall8531 I think he's trying to say that by hiding something in an encyclopedia like that, it shows to L that Light does deceptive things like that and makes even the little things he does like leaving his hand in a bag of potato chips for a second too long more suspect than they otherwise would be

Just remember that Light beat L because a Shinigami broke its own rules to save a human, if Misa had Ryuk 2 as her Shinigami, L would have easily made it
Then Light would have manipulated Rem freakin easily, he would have made Rem save his ass all the time.
Then he would just get Misa to kill L, L was dead the minute he let Miss out
@@animezia Duval's point is that if Rem NEVER fell in love with Misa in the first place or if Rem died/never saw Misa and the Shinigami who threw the second Death Note was just someone who wanted to stir shit like Ryuuk, then both Misa and Light would have been dead.

@@nate6360 I sit like that fairly often.
I watched it for potato chip analysis, came out of it with a good deal of appreciation for how subtle the hints L are picking up are
But honestly, the show had huge flaws.
(i realize now that you posted
like 8 months ago and probably don't care but i've typed this now so whatever)
Super-powers has to be the last guess for 2 reasons:
1) They supposedly don't exist
2) If they do exist, it'd be quite impossible to overcome, so if you have to bet - it might be your worst option to bet on.
I do still think super-powers are a fair assumption since the Death Note doesn't give a ''reason'' for the heart attack, by witch i mean if you performed an autopsy on a Death Note heart attack victim there would be seemingly no cause (wich is why i guess that noone suspected poison)
and again the live TV scene is pretty damning evidence of supernatural (if not 𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭) forces at play.
obviously L knew Kira was a high-schooler because he is friends with the script writer and knows who to suspect to move the plot forward /s
This is the most beautiful explanation of an anime scene in history.

L is really bad at his job...
He should have known something was up when he saw a bag of potato chips that full

Great analysis!
That's some deep thinking
which *chips* away at his humanity ;)

“This has become one of the most quoted and referenced lines not just in all of anime, but in all of media. Period.” LOL, alright, let’s calm down a little bit.
I saw this anime over ten years ago. I saw the title of this video and thought "what potato chip scene?"
If counting from when the anime was released, I'd say it's likely that it's at the very least at the top 5.
I fucking hate this video.
It might be over exaggerated, but back then in 2008-2010 EVERYONE was making the goddamn potato chip gag.
Lol I never even heard of this potato chip thing before this video, and I watched the whole of death note.
This is the anime that I recommend to non-otaku .
Same
It is BAD to be a otaku if u did not know. It means a gamer that cant socialize or cant interact with other people. That's NOT what u wanna be
@Cora Friend yea it is google it
@@menheræ-chan Unless it is.
@@TayoEXE Jesus Christ this is longer than my English book
This the only anime that has made me attached to the villain and his ambitions more than the “good guys”
Swazie_Baby507 as soon as I finished death note I said the same thing. Half the time I didn’t even think of him as a villain
Swazie_Baby507 a villain? You’ve got it all wrong, Swazie. He’s merely.. GOD OF THE NEW WORLD
Then your missing the point because death note hasn't any "good" guys and "bad" guys
The netflix version cuts some crucial information.
In the original, Ryuk asked Light, what if someone else grabbed the bag?
Light is the only one that eats consomme flavored chips. That is why when he grabbed the bag, it was very unique from the rest.
Oh the Netflix version is different?
Absolute Zero maybe there talking about the manga or the english dub?
I dont really remember the anime well but i remember in the japenese live action movie (which i saw first before the anime), after that part, L finally met with Light and he purposely showed up eating the same chips and flavor that Light had. It was, whoa moment. I had to be in class after and that part kept playing on my mind while i was in class 😄

Oh yeah and there’s that whole thing with Near
Near just grabbing information out of thin air sometimes. Also, he worked more than 3 years to get the informations. Aaand by that time, Light have become careless, since he knew little about Near, or his plans, while L informed him about a sh*t ton of his plans. Near was clever, but he was lucky too.
I think even I could've realized that the Kira must be the person who took over from L
@@matyaspiller3942 Honestly lmao I was so pissed when the plot made him win. I would've loved it if Light won at the end or if L won. Not some random 12 year-old.
@@tidepods5506as far as i remember near was nineteen not twelve
@@firstname9237 I don't remember asking unfortunately lol
I love how whenever the task force is learning things L is always giving them sweets
in hindsight, L's tendency towards lots of sugar treats may be because his cases often lead to pulling all-nighters and needs to stay awake .......
the whole time i was watching it i kept asking myself if it’s good to be rooting for light or not.....
i honestly miss L though. i really loved his character :(
I felt he was very hatable but was never sure if I hated him... Now I realise he always managed to impress me with his genius mind to the point that surprise and shock overshadowed everything he did and instead I would be looking wide eyed jaw dropped at the screen going Oooooooooooo and honestly Idk if I'm crazy but id be so impressed!
