it was all fun and stuffs but what is the link between the title and the essay? you speak about universe's rule and the place of Hinduism symbolism in it but where is God in it? you just said that it wasn't about god punishing the bad guys but the true meaning of karma placing the fortune on a balance where ethic is being measured at some point of the flow of events on Earth... sorry I'm maybe confused
You've read Blue Lock haven't you? Your sentiment on Luck and the taking advantage of it echoes the concept of EGO in that series to an eerily similar degree. Seriously, if you have not read it then you NEED to as I am 100% certain that you'll enjoy it.
God is being sarcastically used when referring to Light. Light isn't actually God but he believed he would become one and he believed he had divine providence, which was a lie. He was lucky, not divinely selected and eventually his luck would run out/karma would get back to him
That perspective of luck is also shown in haykiuu to the top when the guy with the suit talks about the effort shown was a calculated decision and therefore brought that "luck" that they needed to continue going.
Death Note begins with luck. Ryuk drops the notebook and Light picks it up and thinks it is destiny. Even when Ryuk tells him to his face that it was pure chance, Light never stops thinking he was meant for it.
Reminds me of the old belief in the “divine right of kings” where some monarchs believed God had chosen them specifically to reign and that their words/actions are therefore God (Henry VIII being an example of this)
I've always loved the second half of death note because all of Near's luck doesn't come in a vacuum. Light is continuously getting more arrogant and angrier that Near has the "audacity to challenge God." Near gets lucky, but that's because Light could never see anyone but L as a threat to him due to his own arrogance. If Light took the time to better control his pieces, there would have been no luck at all.
Okay so I literally sent a comment on another video 5 minutes ago that said I didn’t feel Near should have won... but you kinda just explained it a lot. The luck part, I mean.
Exactly Light really let himself go after L died. At some points he couldn't even mask how arrogant and put off he was in front of the Task Force (he'd outright manipulate and use Takada in front of them, something he wouldnt dare do in front of L, and he just felt darker and more stand off-ish)
True but from the beginning Near is set up as the spiritual successor to L. While I thought the ending was satisfying, I can see why people feel like Near should not have won. It never felt like he could be outsmarted, unlike L who made some grave mistakes as well as risk a lot to gain important pieces of information. Unlike Near, who is so confident that he risks everyone’s life at the end just to prove he is right. It felt formulaic, predictable. The second season had amazing moments, but for me the ending was not one of them
Arrogance is what brought Light down. Season 1 he was more calculating, season 2 he was too haughty after becoming the “god of the new world”. Even at the end when he’s caught he can’t really reason his way out of it. All he can do is give a passionate speech as “somebody had to do it!”. It’s not strategic, it’s just emotional. When L died, his strategic side died with him, and he thought on base level no one could ever match him strategically.
@@ryuk5673 Light did outsmart Near though. He was just too arrogant and didn't control his pawns correctly. It's Mikami's fault that Near ever figured out what the plan was, otherwise he had no idea. Light singles out the killing of Mello to be the weakest point in his plan and his biggest gambit. He himself can still recognize it's where the most could have gone wrong, and it did. I personally feel like it was meant to be a little unsatisfactory. We're watching the villain who has convinced himself he's the hero, lose because of his own anger, arrogance, and overconfidence. It a weird place to be in as a viewer/reader. Part of you still wants Light to win because, "He's our protagonist. He's who we were rooting for from the beginning right?" You especially don't want him to lose to Near, who is just as arrogant and manipulative as Light is. You're angry that Light beat L only to lose here, which is exactly the point.
I hate how people disregard this because of the idea that "luck" is related to stuff like horoscope and shit. No, luck is just a part of the randomness of the world. Like when he explained how Light only met Naomi because of boredom, it is already established that Light has always been bored. That's how he found the Death Note. It's still incredibly lucky for him but it's not entirely unreasonable. He could've chosen to do other things in other parallel worlds but the fact that he happens to do that is luck, plain and simple. And that's the same with reality. Mindless action can affect something else randomly without reason because it doesn't need to. I think people who think "there are no accidents" are even more unscientific because they frame everything as if it's all orchestrated by the universe.
As said, luck is not an IRL stat. It is a fact of reality. We can plan and predict some things, but not every single thing... Good luck having your prized begonias get only 69 raindrops a day!
Me finding the death note manga in a catalogue and choosing it to read.. without any idea of anime universe or any recommendations or anything...well thats luck to me too... Since then I m still searching for such a story. Attack on Titan feels interesting but..death note is just in its own kind...coolest kid standing alone...
@@ShomeAvi I have the same emotional investment into death note as you.Attack on titan has many psychological twist and stabs but you're right about death note being just something that attaches to your soul.it sets the bar for other stories.i recommend hero academia because yeah it's flashy shonen but it's dark moments are serious and question morals
Side note. Light creates a lot of his problems too. Like with the FBI detective he kills from the bus. The guy was actually getting ready to pull his investigation off but Light killed him and actually INVITED more problems because he abused his power.
light didn’t know that he was going to stop investigating him. But i do agree that light creates his own problems but this is mainly because he’s “bored” but that’s just his personality
Because it wasn't shown as much in the anime. In the manga he said that its better to get rid of the fbi agents even if he is cleared because they would cause more problems for him later if left alive
He wanted L to know he was a student and then he let them know he was getting insider info and that he could kill at any time. Once he was being followed he wanted to get rid of the FBI for a few reasons. One was so that once the news broke the ranks would fall since it was the FBI following the NPK and thus making L have to take a more hands on approach. The only thing that messed him up was that Naomi went to the office and L saw her. His plan was always to meet L.
I think here that would be unlucky or the negative karma he put out in relation to the video lol but naratively his goal was to take out the FBI in order to isolate and attack L
I always saw Near's luck as something that Light helped create by insisting on too perfect of a victory. Had Light just been willing to pay the price of acquiring the Shinigami eyes himself, he wouldn't have needed to rely on other people like Misa and Mikami as much as he did.
@@RT-zn9bj that's just a theory lmao. What was he going to do with eyes actually huh? Rem killing L was perfect because blame shifted to rem. L dying normally would cause problems.
@@bait5257 didnt they blame L’s death on kira tho? idk if im remembering wrong but i remember right after his death that the other members of the task force were concerned that they too would be killed by kira.
@@clodaghay it doesn't matter. They know it was the shinigami. They never announced L's death. Near is the current l. Because he is supposed to be L's clone who will take over.
The fact that you have the ability to perfectly explain to me why after all these years I can still rewatch Death Note and still feel the same degree of awe is so amazing. Thank you so much for the brilliant analysis.
I always find new meaning and details when I rewatch deathnote. Like for example when I realised that light and L both shared the same fate like L said because of the chains they wore or that L rubbing lights feet is biblical symbolism for when Jesus rubbed the feet of Judas who Jesus knew was a traitor. Little meanings like that are the reason death note is my favourite anime of all time.
That is a wonderful extended metaphor. I do have to be a little nitpicky though. It was foot washing not rubbing. Foot washing is an ancient custom meant to honor someone. Most often a guest. The other is a foot massage. Also while I'm far from a Biblical scholar I'm pretty sure any such moment between them happened well before we can definitely say Jesus knew Judas was going to betray him.
I do the same thing. The last time i rewatched it i realised that the reason he died in the middle of the staircase was because he couldn't go to heaven or hell.
@@oxtheunlikelycontemplator2682 thanks for correcting me about the washing. Fortunately I am a biblical scholar and Jesus definitely knew that Judas would betray him for silver and washed his feet anyway as an act of love. He is omnipotent after all according to mainstream Christian beliefs.
Light's biggest mistake was revealing so much information about the death note since the first episode just to taunt L. If he didn't reveal he could control the time of death, he would have an automatic alibi when monitored or incarcerated. If he didn't reveal he has access to police records he wouldn't have been caught at all, they would have to check all the people in the region instead of police officers and their family. He didn't need to kill his fbi agents and all but confirm he's kira with the bus hijacking and camera footage. Basically by the second season Near knew light was kira already. He also willingly decided to become the second L when he should have quit and layed low so no one knew his location and N couldn't turn his own people against him. It was a matter of time before he lost.
and revealing that Shinigami exist was stupid on his part too. even though i’m sure he thought it would never get to the point where Rem or Ryuk would have to be exposed to anyone other than himself or Misa. but still it was a stupid mistake.
Light should’ve hid. He shouldn’t have played a game. Similarly, L shouldn’t have kept goading Light with more information. Should’ve never revealed himself. A real investigator, in a situation like that, would’ve hid in the shadows like Raye Penber did. But L could’ve done it more effectively. L could’ve hid from inside the school. Never revealed his name, gotten bad grades on purpose, and wait for Light to make a bad move.
This. People overlook how much Light revealed just within the first few episodes. That's why L always suspected him. That and the fact that L also correctly assumed Light had the personality of a lying, arrogant, manipulative sociopath. A personality that someone like "Kira" would have.
As a Buddhist, I just want to say I've never heard a more perfect description of karma. I feel like a lot of people give Buddhism a bad rep. as just a bunch of hippy "be nice to people and meditate" type preaching, but its actually a lot more well thought out than that.
Ah well thanks, I try to not speak out of my butt whenever possible. Hopefully I did well enough at describing it for people unfamiliar. I'm glad you enjoyed it haha.
Major world religions are always more profound than stuff that is only a small response to a small time period. Against each other they might gain or lose reputation but the only thing that beats a religion is another religion.
I don’t know about anyone else but hiding sounds so much more lively in this video than most of his other ones. Even with a darker show like death note, it’s really great to hear you sound so enthusiastic man.

i always really liked the second part of death note and the roles of near and mello. it showed how light was getting more and more arrogant and less careful, because he thought he already won.
Light found a loop whole where he could give the death note to other people. The cons of doing so is that none of them are light and will ultimately make a mistake and Near was good enough to spot Minakamis mistake.
Death note was my first anime so I just have a close attachment to it and imo the mind games are just better than physical fights or smt. Which makes it my #1 favourite anime.
Thanks, just happy it found you. I think my channel is sortof in a revival phase rn since I didn't post for a while. TH-cam is just started to push things out for my last 3 videos today for some reason. Happy you liked it!
Something that people don't realize is that Near "getting lucky" by Mikami going off on his own to kill Takada is partly Light's own fault. He both didn't give Mikami enough information (like the fact that he could kill people in emergencies) and the fact that he failed to consider to outcome of Mello's actions. Luck certainly plays a large role in the series, but it's a shame that people look at one instance where Near could be considered lucky and ignore all of the times where Light did as well out of bias. Awesome analysis though. I love that Death Note is still so beloved after having ended so long ago.
The argument of Near having been just lucky is pretty prevalent among the fans, yet rarely is it mentioned that other characters partake in the same ammount of luck, or even more. The Karma route is something I've never seen in other analysis, and I believe it's extremely on poin. Great job!
because its not about who gets lucky and who didn't. it is and was always about the writing. this video is fun explaining the karma system, but it doesn't change the fact that the second half of the show is not as well written/paced.
@@hyunweewoo Yeah, that's because the anime butchered the 2nd half. If you take out loads of content from any story then it seems rushed and badly written.
I never considered how much Luck carried the fortunes of the characters. I always had a theory that maybe if there were Gods of Death, that Gods of Life exist too, in order to balence the structure of the world, a Ying to the Yang as it were. The Death Note is very rule oriented and has multiple contracts for its use, so I imagined that the Life Note is very chaotic. This 'luck' of the Death Note characters, I always suspected were the tapestries of the Gods of Life, though nothing I had concretely assumed.
It depends on the type of world building. Some worlds simply don't have any structure of balance because balance is never considered important by the author.
This video kept my ADHD in check. Thank you. I want to listen to videos so badly sometimes, but it's really hard to fully pay attention at times. The visuals really helped. I'm sure they were extremely hard to put together. P.s. the words you're saying ofc are also great. You always put my thoughts into words beautifully
Always appreciate the new, fresh and well thought out takes on Death Note! The whole concept of karma, luck, leading to chaos theory as a thematic bedrock to the series was really refreshing and interesting, and a pretty objectively good defense against the "Near lucky lol sucky show". Awesome work again Hiding!
Thanks Hugz haha I tried my best. Glad it was refreshing, with a show this old and well discussed it's easy to be derivative and overlap others. I try my best to offer stuff that's original while still not being BS!
For me the Reason I disliked the 2nd "half"/part of death note was because I liked L too much. I just loved everything about him, he had flaws that he knew about and in the end these Flaws led to his downfall his emotions caused his Failure but it made him more human than light. In general I always rooted for L and him dying was just a waste for me because he was so close and it was so frustrating like even though Light had a literal God of death and Supernatural Powers on his side on top of lucky moments like Misa and Rem (Raem Ram?) being easily used tools for light that got him the upper hand. Everything was perfectly set in Line for light he just had to put it all together. Not to discredit him his plans were genius and he was a step ahead of L in the end, but all the odds were against L and even then he still got sooo close and kept going was inspiring for me. So him failing felt unfair because simply of the odds that L had no way of knowing at that moment was so tragic, I did not want Near to succeed I wanted L to win. As you said in your last Video Near was more of a successor to Light as to L and thats why I was never a big fan of him. Near was simply not my cup of Tea and I just enjoy watching L way more than watching Near. Im not saying hes a bad characther im just saying I like him wayy less than L because of personal preference.
@@3nvy777 YESS^^^ I have both books and they’re amazing, especially if you’re “team L” or just an L fan in general (he even refers to the BB Los Angeles murder cases after meeting Naomi again during the events of Death Note)
i love L and i didn’t think i would want to finish watching Death Note after he dies but i feel like Near was such a perfect follow up. he was a little baby L with white hair and idk why but he stole my heart and that’s why i’m okay with how the show ended.
Hey man. I just want you to know that you're one of my favourite youtubers. Your videos always feel so authentic and well thought out. They always manage to make me rethink series I already loved and appreciate them more. Keep it up :)
I appreciate it, thanks man. Hopefully I can put more things out more often. I don't plan to stop trying to reply to people, or stop thinking out and covering things I am genuinely passionate about. I'll try my best!
Light is quite an intriguing character, claiming that he would free the world of bad people and reign over it while balancing it himself, while also not being able to put apart his ideals when it comes to achieving his goals. In the end, Light lost because of the destroyed path he'd left behind, and I don't see Mikami's action being "lucky" for Near, as it was just a matter of time for a disruption to happen between the 2 people that had that power, which was once alluded to by how Mikami's ideal of a perfect world was to also eliminate the lazy and threatened with killing them as well. Light knew sharing his power was something risky, and the risk came at a high cost in the end.
I still think there was a big arrogance ingredient in this. The guy went in person to a warehouse unarmed and I think I know why: he gave L a giant smile just before his death so that he died knowing Light was Kira. He went out of his way to catch him just to grin at his face and rub in his victory to his face. He probably wanted to do the same to Near, he was indeed looking forward to the second Mikamk wrote those names. If he had been just a tad more prudent he would not have died.
There's certainly an element of luck. Near predicted it sure, but if it didn't happen, Near probably wouldn't have won. And he only got this opportunity because of Light's allowance and arrogance. His belief that Near and Mellow didn't have anything on L's level of intelligence and were therefore not worthy of him were ultimately what gave them the chance to defeat him
It's not about whether luck happens to be on your side, it's about whether you capitalize on that luck when it is. If you win the lottery, but never spend any of the money, it's as if you never won the lottery in the first place.
Death Note never ceases to amaze me in its themes and story writing that seem to continually evolve as more and more people discuss it. People may complain about Near's luck at the end, but Light ending up with the Death Note in the first place was pure happenstance! The whole series starts with what so many complain about at the end, I can't help but laugh at the irony. Thank you for this amazing video, Hiding. Keep doing what you do!
Thanks Jodog!! Yeah this does just sort fo respond to a sentiment I saw after my last deathnote video but in a more detailed way. It is ironic critisism
I always found it thematically appropriate that one day the death note was dropped into Lights school entirely by chance and he began purging the world of crime. only for him to in turn be undone by Near stumbling across the death note entirely by chance.
I can't believe that some Death Note fans will say that Near only won due to luck and use that fact to justify their hate towards him, only to turn around and worship Light for his intelligence. Light relied on luck SO many times throughout the series. That's what makes Death Note thrilling. Even if he prepares for every possible scenario, there's still a possibility that every one of Light's plans could fail due to bad luck.
I'm so happy someone else thinks the same way as me. Was trying to think of something else to say about luck in everything and how lucky Light was to even receive the Death Note, but the video says most of it and I agree with everything you said. actually
I watched death note when I was 12 or 13 and didn’t care for it, but honestly after watching this video and your first one I think I should give it another chance. I feel like I might enjoy reading it more but I don’t know...
It also might seem strange for the author to include such a competent character (Naomi) out of the blue just to just as suddenly get rid of her as if she was never there in the first place and existed more like an inconsequential loose end. It's covering up an unintentional issue with the writing of her character. The author originally planned to include her as apart of the task force, but accidently made her uncover things he later realized brought her much closer to solving the case then the author intentionally wanted for the story, and so had to get rid of her prematurely even though he actually wanted to include her in the future. Even if their meeting was purely based off of luck, the resulting mind-game became my favorite part of the show.
Ikr, naomi was such an awesome character, I was so fkin upset when she got killed. Such a loss. We could've had her around but instead got stuck with having only pathetic female characters like misa
I already knew about some of the stuff you said in the video like the meaning of 108, and MU, I have always loved near and the second half and feel like people just don’t understand that he was going to lose but because of the “system” he won. I love seeing someone talk about this. Thank you for informing people of this so they can better understand it.
I love ya made a video on Death Note, even after it's been out for such a long time. I've found so many people say they hate Death Note because it's the cool thing to do since it's popular still. I honestly wasn't the biggest fan of the final ark in the anime but i didn't hate it. I only just got through it entirely last year; I do think it was rushed, which is sad, but i will read the manga eventually. Thank you for the video too!
Fantastic work. Fiction is fraught with luck and fortuitous happenings, but I think that if the luck stems from the characters' thematically consistent tendencies, then it typically won't poke its head above the suspension of disbelief. Your grounding of this idea in Buddhism and karma adds much more depth and texture to these ideas. This was a great watch. Looking forward to more!
To be fair, Naomi’s death gives L the same information about the relationship between Kira and Pember and Kira’s abilities that she would have told L, so Light still kind of loses there.
Still don't like the end and how the author couldn't find a way for light to lose so he made him lose by someone else's mistakes. The end felt very sloppy and will never hold a light to L and lights dynamic
I can empathize with that. Even if it's Light's fault for relying on someone he had limited insight into, you would hope his plan wouldn't be so shakey
Ive actually never seen death note before this year, and this was the same year that I have been hard-core studying Buddhism and eastern philosophy in general. I saw instantly what you're talking about and it made me happy to see someone mention it. The subtle yet not so subtle in this show makes me very happy.
Karma, in my eyes is just a fancy way of claiming your actions have consequences. It puts the belief in the idea that if you are a good person and if you complete good deeds, then you will be rewarded with that same treatment back. However, that isn't always the case. I do agree that if you take an action, just by existing you create change in the world. As you are born people must react to your existence and you react back to theirs constantly as we all interact. However, that doesn't mean just cause you are nice you will be treated nicely, and that is where 'karma' is turned on its head. Karma overblows the idea that every action or deed you do, will immediately take effect afterwards, and says that being good will always bring good back to you. To me though, that isn't always how life works. In interactions with people you've met or never met, then that will likely work to that small scale. However, no level or amount of good deeds can eliminate all wrong, all problems, etc. That's cause we and this world can never be perfect. Now, that I'm done rambling, great work on the video, keep it up :)
Yes, I think I agree with what you're saying. I dislike when "Karma" is thought of as a cosmic force that will balance out your deeds and rewards, because I believe in no supernatural cosmic power like that. I think karma can be more suitably understood and relied upon as a heuristic for human nature; doing good unto others tends to beget good from others, and people can sometimes sense positive attitudes, intentions, and dispositions in subtle ways that can cause rewards to appear cosmic in nature. Being good to others is a good rule and is likely to reward you; but it is foolish to think that the mechanism is one of divine balancing, and it is more likely to lead to depression once you realize that you can't calculate what you will reap as it is imprecise and indefinite.
there is actually nothing in the philosophy of karma that suggests you will be treated better for being a good person. rather the belief is these good acts will bring you good fortune in your next incarnation. not your present life future. what your thinking of is a very westernized interpretation of karma that simplifies it to, if you do good good things happen, if you do bad, bad things happen. but that is not exactly how it works. it has more to do with justifying the caste system, then trying to encourage being a good person. which it also is trying to do.
I would also go as far as to say that doing a good deed does not necessarily reap a good outcome on the world and the opposite is also true, doing bad also does not necessarily have a bad outcome. A good example of this is Monster where the story starts off with our Dr protagonist saving a young boys life, turns out this was a big mistake.
Naomi thought that bus criminal's death maybe due to Kira, and that he can kill without heart attacks! Then.... if it would give away light. It can be, since ray was investigating light and he was also in the bus, but naomi did not knew about it while L knew. Know compare:- 1. If Naomi informed so to L, there would just be more possibilities but no proof. Light would be suspected, but it can also be kira killed the criminal and ray from somewhere else(no one knew about the death note's rules at that time) 2. L found about Noami's suicide, but since he knew her from BB Murder Case, he thought it was a unnatural move and kira may have a hand. Also then he may have the power to kll without heart attacks(Naomi's suicide!)....Ray's position at death must be weird since he knew light unlike other FBI agents who died suddenly, so from this observation, L suspected Light. Naomi's hypothesis was only proved after the death note was retrieved from Higuchi....but by then the false rules protected light and misa.....eventually klling L....So, except for showing Light's sadistic nature and eliminating a possible hinderance to the cat and mouse race between Light and L, nothing much was changed. Also, It didn't delay investigation by more than 2 days since Naomi and L reached the same clue within that time......
The main reason it would have been a big deal is specifically the day of the accident Raye penber was trailing Light, so if Naomi had informed L that Raye spoke with a suspect and gave the date L would have known Light could have gotten information that lead to their deaths. It changes a TON. Like it's not bulletproof evidence but it's about ABC as you can get
I understand Light got lucky many more times than N, I still hated that lucky bust though. Not because of the luck alone but because some random new guy came in and wins because of 1 lucky instance. L put so much hard work into what he did, for N to solve the entire case that quickly felt very cheap and only cheapened all of my time spent loving L. I understand that in real life, the good guys only really need to get lucky once to find the bad guy so this story is partially true to reality; But at the same time, it will illogically always cheapen the ending of the story for me. Maybe if we had more time with N, time to maybe understand he's not some new brat that got lucky and won. Because that's all N is to me. Sorry for the long comment here, I just really do love Death Note as a whole and have many thoughts on this part of the series, thanks for the awesome content as always Hiding
I wouldn't say that it was one lucky instance that did Light in, but rather a combination of many factors that Light didn't take into account, which allowed for Near to put the pieces together much easier than anticipated. As this video discusses, luck is an element that exists throughout the story. The actions (or lack thereof) of the characters determine the role luck ultimately plays in the narrative. Near getting lucky wouldn't have mattered if Light hadn't gotten overconfident and took the struggle against Near more seriously. Light's hubris caused him to make errors in judgment that Near was able to use to his advantage. Near's conflict with Light isn't done very well in the anime & it doesn't do his character any justice. The manga actually does showcase how he isn't just some substitute for L, but a character that is complex and varied in his own way.
As someone who only watched the anime, I think the issue is that the second part was more rushed. If the anime adaptation kept the same pace, that part would have as many episodes as the first, and thus N would've had way more screen time, just as much as L. Also, N wasn't idle during the timeskip. He had to rebuild the case as Rem made Wasabi delete a bunch of data related to the case, IIRC. That being said I do want to read the manga once, just to experience the plot in its original pacing.
The very premise of the show, someone like Light finding the death note, is already a huge matter of luck, hinged on one God Of Death *being bored*. The weight of everything that happens, the main thematic thrust of it, is driven by Light himself, his ego, his wild ambitions. He’s the one that views it all as a game he is meant to win, to prove to himself that he is meant to wield this power and use it to judge others. Because he is the protagonist, its hard to not see the events of the story through this perspective, losing sight of the fact that for all his schemes and accomplishments and natural abilities he has… he’s just a human who stumbled onto a magic book. He was never *really* in complete control… had ryuk or any other shinigami willed it they could have written Light’s name down whenever they wanted. We assume that by virtue of many things going on in our life all at once, that complications beyond our understanding form, that there is some greater purpose to it all, that some level of control and planning exists somewhere by someone, and that if things go wrong theres always something else that could have been done. There’s always that illusion that we could have had something, known something, done something, that would have right some wrong in our life, that will never go away because we are constantly moving forward into the unknown. I see Death Note as the ultimate display of humility; even given an extraordinary power with significant advantages, we are still at the mercy of factors beyond our control that only incidentally allow us to continue, and when we lose sight of that and our ego goes out of control, we become capable of doing monstrous things, until the universe inevitably puts us in our place.
14:30 As you are saying this I am immediately remembering how on point Light's manipulation of Misora was. She pushed back multiple times and even after hard logic failed he risked it all and lied that he was in the task force to finally get her to give him her name. It was lucky to meet her but, there are few characters sociopathic enough, and charismatic enough to capitalize on it.
An amazingly well written video about an amazingly well written show. Great Job! I've subscribed!! I think a video topic of this scale needed to be 17 minutes to convey what you had to say and the length only enriched my experience with deeper narratives explained meticulously.
Death Note is the most well written anime that I have ever seen. Those that feel cheated, usually feel "ENTITLED" and did not like the ending of Evangelion either.
the old light yagami died when kira was born. it's crystal clear that his obsession over killing l bit him in the ass. he hated l so much that he clouded his own vision and thoughts, ultimately leaving him with no purpose after l died. to light, l was the only true rival he ever had. he looked down on EVERYONE and when near capitalized on his own egocentricity and narcissism, light couldn't believe someone other than the person he had deemed his equal had managed to bring him down. i like to think that light thought about holding lawliet's cold body in his arms, that he savored that moment for so long that it became bittersweet once the smoke cleared. light lost because he set himself up with a fatalistic philosophy. he lost his meaning and his motive, becoming exactly what he hated only to wind up dying to his own ego.
Hey i gotta say this video was amazing. Your explanations were understandable for me and i think if i was doing doing this video i would have had most of the same wording and "evidence" included. You did a good job and i am subscribing. You're as good as L
The music syncing up with your words at 13:55. This is why i love HIP. The way everything just lines up in the end, like putting the final piece in a puzzle. I love this.
@@HidinginPublic You did a good job in that. May I ask why you deleted your last video? I never got the chance to watch it. You don't have to answer if you don't want to.
I'm so glad that Neir killed the corruption that is light. Why would we WANT light to win? He's no longer the person he was before and he became the very thing he hated. He became a terrible monster that only saw everyone as pawns for his own gain.
I'm in the few that actually really like the second arc, and ever since I finished the manga I've been defending Near (and to a lesser extent Mello) because I've found a good majority of the criticism against him was excused with L and Light and the others. Very glad you brought up some of the lucky moments in the series! This has given me some concrete things to think about.
Correction to you in regards to Mu. Chapter 107 confirmed that the rule that states death note users can't go to heaven and hell, it simply means heaven and hell never existed in the first place. Ryuk was surprised when light realized this because he assumed everyone believed in the afterlife. Ryuk confirms that heaven and hell doesn't exist and EVERYONE goes to the same place irregardless of what they do. Death is equal . The last few rules confirm this by saying that all humans will die and will go to nothingness. Ohba confirms this multiple times in death note: how to read. He says that there is nothing after death and no one comes back to life
I always thought that Mu was the void that was shown in Death Parade. Since Light made a cameo in Death Parade and both shows were made by the same studio, I assumed Death Parade was created as a way to expand upon the briefly explored concept of the afterlife in Death Note. If that is the case, then it has been confirmed that heaven and hell don't exist in the Death Note universe and that the only place left to go according to Death Parade is either reincarnation or the void. I'm assuming Light went to the void and I'm hoping that L got reincarnated.
@@chaotiquebi no. Not even close. The author made it clear once you dead, there's no coming back. Moreover, death parade wasnt made by ohba nor written. Since death note and death parade got anime made by madhouse , its not surprising light made a cameo. Just it isnt canon to the death note story
Which I thought was odd in a world with Death Gods and magical killer notebooks. Especially since it's kind of clumsy to suggest Heaven and Hell do exist by stating humans who specifically use the Death Note won't go to either. It seems like a contradiction or retraction that should've seen the heaven and hell thing edited out. No wonder it leaves people speculating about the concept of afterlife in the Death Note world. Especially when the idea is clearly established that there are alternate planes of existence that have very limited interaction with one another. So it's very possible that there are planes existence the very limited Death Gods don't know about. It's similar in regard to that whole thing about the Death Note or the shinigami attached to it possessing its user but also claiming that the users are acting entirely of their own free will. Either you don't understand the concept of posession in this context at all or the line regarding it should've been cut.
@@oxtheunlikelycontemplator2682 its not clumsy . Look back to the second to last chapter. The hidden meaning of the rule was that heaven and hell didn't exist . When light heard that death note users can't go to hell or heaven, he surmised that neither existed . Ryuk praised him stating that he thought all humans believed in the afterlife. Also. Dont say there are realms that the shinigami don't know. The author EXPLICITLY said multiple times that there is nothing after death and you only live once. He even says its one of the underlying themes . There's not much more confirmation than you need. No contradiction . Just elaboration . Dont jump to herculean leaps in logic
@@samukajabateh1640 it's not a Herculean leap in logic to say that explicitly stating that specific persons can't go specific places implies those places exist. Otherwise there'd be no need for a rule about it yet alone one with such specificity. It's also not much of a hidden meaning if you blatantly reveal it by refuting the implication in the same text just a little further down the list. The only reason I can see for it is to create the story beats where Light asks Ryuk about the apparent contradiction and Ryuk tell him there's no afterlife to which Light says he knew that already. And it's not needed for that. It's strange to me that most humans disregard the possibility of an afterlife based off lack of belief in the supernatural but Light has tangible proof that the supernatural is real yet apparently still doesn't believe in the afterlife or consider the possibility? Like who wouldn't ask a Death God about the possibility of an afterlife after they now know for a fact that a kind of spirit beings and another realm of existence are real? There's no need for that rule to be in the Death Note it could just as easily be nixed and keep the one about all humans going to nothingness and the exact same message could still be delivered in almost the same way. But having heaven and hell alluded to in this manner, in a rule set in a magical killer notebook for a bunch of immortal grim reaper figures does create a certain degree of ambiguity. You were able to resolve it by looking up author interviews. When an author has to clarify a major theme in their work in this manner it's because it's not well communicated in the work. That is clunky. I suppose that would be kinder than clumsy. I still love Death Note but that doesn't mean I think it or Ohba are perfect.
THANK YOU! Your points were incredibly well written and this provided great insight into the Death Note anime. I am one of the rare few who just this year discovered and watched Death Note. Keep up the fantastic work!!
I've honestly not watched death note since everyone kept spoiling it to me and I couldn't really be bothered watching something when I know most of the twists, but this review for sure has changed my mind!! Should I watch it?
Absolutely. Even if you know all of the spoilers, getting to see how it plays out is fantastic. Death Note isn't really about the endings, it's about the journey to those endings.
@@stardustspark5682 I hope it lives up to those expectations honestly! It might be one of those series where the journey is better than the destination for sure!
Loved the video and the outtro song. I really hadn’t thought about how well implemented luck was in death note. Coincidences sometimes make a story but death note weaves its lucky moments and coincidences in such a coherent way that it make its awesome to watch.
I just realized that death note could be an allegory for anxiety. Think about it, you over analyze, over thinking, everything, and you see threats everywhere.
@@Nemopoly it's a piece of art, it's subjective. Of course people are going to project themselves into it. And my argument is based on something that is present throughout the show. It's completely valid to interpret a piece of art on your own, you should try it sometime.
Another great video! I really enjoyed it as much as the last Death Note video, and the title for this one was well-thought out like the previous one. Keep up the good work!
Imo death note is a great story of not only how society is rotten, but tht all will reap wht they sow. No matter whether ur deeds do gd or bad, tht doesn't matter. If u HV done something it will come back to u in the same form and magnitude. Light's own hubris came back to bite him thru Near's victory tht proved Light wasnt infallible. He still could make mistakes and he was especially prone to them after L died, as he got the idea tht now no one would be able to challenge him as well as L did...or so he thought. I miss these anime where moral complexity is so subtle yet impactful and obvious to those tht take the time to pick out the small details. Nowadays I feel this moral complexity in anime is being too obvious, not there or just being over-exaggerated for the purposes of driving a plot.
Near got lucky that 1- Mello randomly decided to kidnap Takeda 2- That Mikami had such a super-strict super monotonous to-the-letter schedule. If he was more 'normal', it wouldn't have looked weird that he went to the bank twice the same day, maybe he just forgot something. But he stuck to such a strict schedule, him suddenly breaking it seemed out of place.
dude did you even listen to nears monologue at the end it’s obvious mello kidnapping takeda wasn’t random it was meant to put kira in a tight position to give near more intel mello knew he was sacrificing yourself you’re actually stupud
and mikami having a super strict schedule is part of his character???? would you say that L being smart is “lucky” or that miss being obsessed with Kira is “lucky”? no you dumbass it’s just how the characters were written

sorry I'm maybe confused
Yoooooooo
Accurate!
Fully agree
Reminds me of the old belief in the “divine right of kings” where some monarchs believed God had chosen them specifically to reign and that their words/actions are therefore God (Henry VIII being an example of this)
@@scarlett-moriko1543 You an antitheist? You watch too much Rick & Morty & Bojack Horseman, weeby
Luck is one of those things that plays a huge role in our lives and we don't even notice it
True
Light creates problem when he tried to kill L in second episode noneof would have happened if he remained silent and didn't tried to kill L
Actually no. He would have died in a week after the trade

Yep.. watching Death Note on Adult Swim always left me holding my breath for a week until the next Saturday night rolled around too... 🤣
Same.....
I do the same thing. The last time i rewatched it i realised that the reason he died in the middle of the staircase was because he couldn't go to heaven or hell.
@@schnume5666 and the reason he died is because L said that their fates were linked. I.e by the chains they both wore together.
He was bored
Becoming L gave him power. Light was too power hungry to win the long game.
I feel like a lot of people give Buddhism a bad rep. as just a bunch of hippy "be nice to people and meditate" type preaching, but its actually a lot more well thought out than that.

i always really liked the second part of death note and the roles of near and mello. it showed how light was getting more and more arrogant and less careful, because he thought he already won.
Light found a loop whole where he could give the death note to other people. The cons of doing so is that none of them are light and will ultimately make a mistake and Near was good enough to spot Minakamis mistake.

This 'luck' of the Death Note characters, I always suspected were the tapestries of the Gods of Life, though nothing I had concretely assumed.
that's a really interesting take.
That would mean gods of death like Rem could have become a god of life when she died, that would make sense.
It depends on the type of world building. Some worlds simply don't have any structure of balance because balance is never considered important by the author.

If you like L you should read the novels; L change the world & Death Note: Another Note: The BB L.A. Murder Cases

It is ironic critisism
it was never about the luck specifically, but the way it was implemented and paced. aka the writing of the second half in general

Well, guess I'll subscribe.
I always found it thematically appropriate that one day the death note was dropped into Lights school entirely by chance and he began purging the world of crime.
only for him to in turn be undone by Near stumbling across the death note entirely by chance.
I feel bad for Rem and how willing Misa was to have Rem sacrifice herself, especially with how much Rem seemed to care for Misa.
They're no different from the Kira worshippers in the manga.
I'm so happy someone else thinks the same way as me.
Was trying to think of something else to say about luck in everything and how lucky Light was to even receive the Death Note, but the video says most of it and I agree with everything you said.

I'm glad I could put some of your thoughts into words haha. Thanks for watching

I instantly loved Naomi and how skillful she was I was really sad when light killed her off She would’ve definitely become a fan favorite character

Really great keep it up, man!
Probably will watch it on the bus on my way home but I'm so excitedddd~~~
Hope it doesn't bore you!
YUKI!!
@@GlobusTheGreat Completely agree :)
there is actually nothing in the philosophy of karma that suggests you will be treated better for being a good person. rather the belief is these good acts will bring you good fortune in your next incarnation. not your present life future. what your thinking of is a very westernized interpretation of karma that simplifies it to, if you do good good things happen, if you do bad, bad things happen. but that is not exactly how it works. it has more to do with justifying the caste system, then trying to encourage being a good person. which it also is trying to do.
@@jacencade4019 mmm I see, thank you for the extra info! :) I'll keep that in mind going forward
I like how he looks way happier just by listening to his voice. Love your vids, keep going!
Naomi thought that bus criminal's death maybe due to Kira, and that he can kill without heart attacks! Then.... if it would give away light. It can be, since ray was investigating light and he was also in the bus, but naomi did not knew about it while L knew. Know compare:-
1. If Naomi informed so to L, there would just be more possibilities but no proof. Light would be suspected, but it can also be kira killed the criminal and ray from somewhere else(no one knew about the death note's rules at that time)
Light just got too arrogant
Always happy to get a notification for a new video dude. I love the fresh take on this alot
I try! Hopefully more will come quicker
Great job on this one, it seems like you are putting a lot more time into your videos lately. Keep up the good work!
Unfortunately too much time maybe! haha hope I can get some quality videos out at a quicker rate in the future
I dont get why people say light is smarter than L cause he literally has shinigamis helping him
The very premise of the show, someone like Light finding the death note, is already a huge matter of luck, hinged on one God Of Death *being bored*.
Ever just realise that light would’ve been so successful like when he escaped in the final ep he saw his younger self idk that affected me
Your analysis has made me love Death Note even more! Good job! :D
for a character that died 14 years ago he is still talked about to this day
that was a really elegant way of putting it and has definitely made me rethink what was already one of my favourite series
the old light yagami died when kira was born. it's crystal clear that his obsession over killing l bit him in the ass. he hated l so much that he clouded his own vision and thoughts, ultimately leaving him with no purpose after l died. to light, l was the only true rival he ever had. he looked down on EVERYONE and when near capitalized on his own egocentricity and narcissism, light couldn't believe someone other than the person he had deemed his equal had managed to bring him down. i like to think that light thought about holding lawliet's cold body in his arms, that he savored that moment for so long that it became bittersweet once the smoke cleared. light lost because he set himself up with a fatalistic philosophy. he lost his meaning and his motive, becoming exactly what he hated only to wind up dying to his own ego.
The issue with NEar is more aout his ability to get and fake the notebook, more than knowing to try.

Just glad to bring something new and interesting into the conversation
I can't understand a word you type, like what is wt lmo grt ur gd tht

Near got lucky that
1- Mello randomly decided to kidnap Takeda
2- That Mikami had such a super-strict super monotonous to-the-letter schedule. If he was more 'normal', it wouldn't have looked weird that he went to the bank twice the same day, maybe he just forgot something. But he stuck to such a strict schedule, him suddenly breaking it seemed out of place.

A lot of people forget that Light even obtaining the Death Note was pure luck
As ryuk said in Episode 1 that light picking up death note was pure luck And not destiny
You can also think of it as multiple times death notes are trowhn onto Earth and, sooner or later, someone smart would pick it up
