I Always* Land This Kick in Sparring - The Hook Kick

  • *Almost Always! (except against Wonderboy, but come on.)
    Traditionally a Taekwondo or Karate technique, the Hook Kick is a tricky strike the has serious knockout potential. Furthermore, I find myself always landing this kick in #sparring, since the trajectory of the kick naturally bypasses the guard. And for those of you who don’t have the flexibility for this kick, I share a variation called: the inside-to-outside crescent kick.
    DISCLAIMER: DO NOT USE THIS KICK IN SPARRING IF YOU CAN’T THROW IT WITH TOTAL CONTROL! DON’T HURT YOUR TRAINING PARTERS!

    finally someone that does a good and powerful hook kick "without hooking". people always say hook kicks dont have power but if you follow through with your leg instead of hooking it it becomes a pretty powerfull strike. Most people even hook their leg before striking, it takes out all the power!
    Very good video, i always land that low-low-hook kick evert time, its my go to technique, loved seeing it here.
    Great video

    Interesting way you throw it as a feint, I always do it as a lead leg kick. Either from orthodox or from southpaw with the other leg, typically after missing with a rear roundhouse kick where I land in opposite stance and then do a close range hook kick from a blind angle.

    Big fan of throwing it defensively as well with the lead leg ... fade away with the rear leg and catch them chasing. I've had success using the sidekick to teach the hook (since sidekicks don't work anyway😂) too. Throw a side at a bag, then throw and "miss" the bag, then hook it back in. Solid as always.

    Hey Shane(and anyone else reading this) try this technique out! It's kind of similar to what you showed here and requires hip dexterity.
    Establish low kick threat. Fake low kick by swinging a kick and as your leg swings forward, pull your knee in to your own belly to chamber and unleash a side kick to the face or opponent's body.
    If you get it down, let me know if you like the move or not!

    I use my legs much more than my hands when I sparr, except the jab. That’s why I would like to see which techniques Vince is using.

    It's such a nice kick. I use a variation going down in a 45° angle a lot as well. Then if you get blocked it's almost like a half axe kick, and I find you can often pull people down by the head even when you're not going hard.

  • @Twobarpsi

  • @criscris428
    @criscris428 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    that's great technique! hook kicks are one of those kicks you least expect to be thrown at you, if you got great technique and can generate enough power you can break some nose and deal some really good damage, if they get used to it to or expect it and tries to block you can make go high and go down changing it into an axe kick. But yes don't use it in sparring if you can't control it well, you might end up sending someone to the E.R. real quick.

    Hook kicks looking crisp there Shane !!!!,me personally as a southpaw I prefer throwing hook kick of lead leg way quicker and better,plus like bill super foot Wallace disguised with sidekicks and roundhouse kicks not sure what’s coming,great to practice of back leg,but be a very low percentage of that landing,but got to remember axe kick to as it looks very similar to hook kick can be switched up

    Extending the leg and then hooking in the heel in is how I've seen it taught too. However, I think this slows the kick down, considerably and I think some power is lost that way too.

    Great video, added this to my reservoir of kicks. Problem is the "all or nothing " when it comes to this kick. If saenchai, for example, catches u attempt the first time and u fail the telegraph is too strong and this kick throws u off balance ALL or nothing. In a street fight this is useless if your leg or opponent sees this your head is completely open and the backside of the head as well. Looks good but not practical unless Saenchai s the fighter using this but his handstand kick is incredible.

    • @hunterhenryk
      @hunterhenryk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, was just going to say this. If blocked or caught, whole side is exposed and balance is compromised. Even taking one step forward as the defender would negate the kick and leave attacker fully exposed. Looks cool though.
