1. Intro (comment)
This video takes a look at the Yeasu FT-710 Acoustic Enhanced Speaker System or AESS.
We're going to explore what AESS is, how does it work, adjustments to personalize it for your ears, and answer the question do you really need it?

I bought the field version, for using AESS i use my old Kenwood SP-430. it's almost identical Yaesu's speaker. I also have a Yaesu SP-2000 for my FTDX-3000 so i can switch either in or out . Saved a good bit of cash using my existing speakers. The AESS is a subtle feature, really helpful to my damaged hearing by changing the phase of the sound especially the 750 to 1000Hz. My 28 year old and 14 year old kids cannot hear the difference between the 750-1000Hz but they both noticed the phase shifting for me 75% is perfect. Use of my SP-2k' filters with the ARSS really is night & day. Glad to make use of that old Kenwood station speaker, albeit- its silver. Also glad to have a 100% SDR that can be upgraded as long as the hardware handles the upgrades and updates 73 de N3TGY
The AESS doesn’t change the phasing of the signal. I got it for the front facing speaker
@ND3N that's the intention of it to phase shift he acoustic phase between 0-100% between the top mounted speaker and the outboard speaker also between 750Hz to 1000Hz that's what I understand AESS is all about, also on the manual it says it won't work properly without Yaesus ' tuned' cabinet. Whatever voodoo it does, it works for my hearing at 75% and above. I worked in a steelmill right out of high-school and ruined my high frequency hearing.
Thank you for the video. Very informative.
I see you have a TS-890 sitting on the bench. Thats on my wish list. What are your thoughts on it?
Thank you.
Welcome!
Wouldn't it be better to use a center speaker (which is designed for movie dialogues) from a home theater system? (a decent speaker in a wooden enclosure, etc.). Instead of yaesu speaker. Center is cheap and has way bigger speakers.
A couple of points…. First, we’re not dealing with high fidelity, complex sounds. So any speaker will do for the basic voice audio. Second, only the Yaesu speaker made for the 710 has the internal circuitry to do the AESS function. That said, if all you need is a front facing speaker, then whatever you use will work. I use an old radio shack CB speaker on my 891 and it does the job for that rig.
@@ND3N What internal circuitry in the Yaesu speaker? a high pass filter?
Thanks for this. I do only digital modes and CW - can you recommend a CW speaker for the FT-710?
For CW and Data, the internal speaker is more than sufficient, no need for AESS, so buy the field version….
@@ND3N Thank you, Sir!
The external speaker has been reported to pop and make extra beeps when using CW
@KD9ZHF nothing beats a good set of cans , I like my old 1970s General Electric headphones, ymmv, but something like those that fully covers the ears works best for me. When I was a teenager, I had a large public address speaker that I built a cabinet for , I had an old Heathkit HW-101 rig , my dad used to like to listen so I found this large speaker ( after trying a bunch of speakers I removed from other equipment) that large public address speaker ( was from a department store drop ceiling ) it helped by removing the hiss and distracting noise- remember, this was an old rig - very noisy. Try unconventional things , you might be surprised! 73 de N3TGY
@@l.a.2646thank you!
I have the 710 and the ft500 mobile, on the mobile I think it is a waste of time and money. I don't see the need of it. I may buy the sp40 and try it to see if it works for me. The problem I am having is some people's voices or the repeaters audio comes across sounding harsh, over modulating scratchy audio, very irritating to my ears. What do you think of Mr. Heils parametric equalizer for cleaner audio?
I don’t have one and I’ve never used one. To be fair, Heil developed that before every radio had one built in, and considering the engineering behind everything else he makes, including the commercial stuff, I can’t imagine it being anything but very effective. Perhaps if I had an older rig, it would be a good add-on.
Tom, since you are a Yaesu radio guru, I started having problems tuning my 710. All of a sudden when I try to tune in a person talking I can't get them tuned to be understandable , it just started this . I go up and down to tuned them in and it won't get their voices clear is there a setting I messed up or should I do a reset.?
Check your receive bandwidth. Sounds like you’re too narrow.
@@ND3N no, wide, its only on 40 meter. 20 meter is fine , I was using that software N3FJP
I tried adjusting the shift, contour , notch and width nothing changes
Hey Tom, I found the problem with my radio, I accidentally put 40 meter on USB instead LSB. Don't know how that happened. Thanks anyway for your help.
It’s no DX10!
No it’s not. But I also have one of those. AESS is unique to the 710, so I thought a video explaining it would be useful…
@@ND3N I told you wrong its not the 710 its the Alinco 735T 2 meter radio. sorry for the confusion . We have a repeater that makes everyones voices sound harsh or kinda distorted, Not clear.
🤣🤣🤣
