  • In this video, I show you how to adjust the valve clearance on the front cylinder of an XV1100 Virago. I check the exhaust valves a few times, but I also did the same with the intake one, just not in the video otherwise it would be just too long. Basically do the same amount of checking what I did on the exhaust valve. Turn the engine around a few times and re-check...
    Check books for clearance values 0:16
    What tools needed 1:39
    Checking clearance first 2:05
    Loosening up the intake valve adjuster 2:56
    Quick check after first adjustment 4:00
    Tight up the lock nut 5:10
    Checking the exhaust valve clearance first time 7:27
    Loosening up the exhaust valve adjuster 8:18
    Turning engine over to re check the clearance 9:15
    2nd adjustment on the exhaust valve 9:51
    Checking the clearance after 2nd adjustment 10:29
    Last time checking the clearance after the 2nd engine turn over 11:07
    Torque the nut to 27NM 11:53
    Final check on exhaust valve 12:21

    Hi thanks for this - very good
    Just couple of questions
    When you do the valve clearances on the rear cylinder do you have to rotate engine to TDC again separate to front cylinder so each time you have to rotate engine clockwise to TDC before adjusting clearances
    Thanks

    • @MidlandCruiser
      @MidlandCruiser  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically yes. You set the rear to TDC and adjust both valves, then turn the engine around a few times and set the rear again to TDC to double check the clearances.
      Then set the front to TDC adjust the valves and do the same double check. You can't set both cylinder (all 4 valves) at the same time

    • @MidlandCruiser
      @MidlandCruiser  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, unfortunately I'm not familiar with the V-star or it's monoshock setup. If you are worried that the shaft drive is affected but you'd be fine with the standard height then just buy an original second hand set from ebay, or new whichever fits the budget. Sorry but I'm not much of a help with this

    Nice tutorial. One thing I saw that bothers me, when doing valves like this I always use the boxed end of the wrench. If that open end slips off, you can find yourself with a lock nut that has rounded corners.

    • @MidlandCruiser
      @MidlandCruiser  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. Yes it is important. Try to do it around 20C (ambient temperature) which is the industry standard and considered as a base line. Basically next day after a ride from April to October on the Northern hemisphere will be fine... it doesn't has to be exactly 20C. Hope this helps

    First time doing valves on my 750 virago. Must I drain the oil before I can take off the left side cover to rotate to TDC?

    • @MidlandCruiser
      @MidlandCruiser  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you don't need to drain the oil..just remove the ring cover to get to the crankshaft bolt check it here when I do it
      Skip to 3.15, timestamp in the description

    • @sisaketmike
      @sisaketmike 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You only have to remove the round cover, held by three screws. Then you'll see the plastic nut that you must take out as well. Do not try to turn the engine with the plastic nut, it only covers the one you need to turn the engine...clockwise.

    • @MidlandCruiser
      @MidlandCruiser  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Always adjust both cylinder my friend, the only reason it's not in the video because it is impossible to record anything on the rear cylinder, the way you can actually see what I'm doing, that's why I only recorded the front, the rear is the same way just set the flywheel to the "T" mark and check the camshaft to make sure you are on TDC then do everything the same as on the front and you are good to go...hope it makes sense..
