Thank you for this video! I just tried skating outside for the first time and it was a nightmare. I got myself in an unexpected hill and I thought the only way to go downhill was backwards but there was no way I was trying that. I just went forward, gained a lot of speed, got desperate because there were cars passing at the end of the hill and then fell big time haha Had to crawl the rest of the way like a fool.
No problem. I’m glad it helped. Definitely nice to have some options, what feels natural to me can be totally awkward for someone else. Enjoy your skate journey x
Differences skating outside is almost night and day from indoors. On the street or tennis court, it becomes more intense. I learned best thing was to stick to fundamental actions, posture, stance, movement and this really helped. Also, when possible used a broom to sweep debris to the side. Just bought my pair of roller skate after 30 years (I’m 40 🤞🏻) thx for your videos you’re clear and always give different solutions for different scenarios
Same here! I got really good as a kid and haven't skated much in years until recently when I've had the money for actual decent skates. It's like brand new all over again ☺️ (I'm 40, too!)
Thank you so much! This is very useful especially as a newbie outdoor skater. I can't wait to try these tips out around my neighbourhood. The way you explained everything just makes so much sense :)
It's the same in the reverse. If you are more used to outdoor skating, indoor skating feels like you're floating on air and you feel less connected. I have a hard time gauging my abilities indoors.
I love the way you explain things by specifying where to put your weight, (back wheels, inside, outside, etc.) I've never seen anyone else's videos explain it that way, it really helps me understand exactly what to do.
Thank you. I always think it’s hard to see where my weight is from just by watching and skating is all about where you’re leaning on your skate. So glad it’s helped. 🛼💕👍
this is helpful - I remember when I outdoor skated at piedmont park, I did exactly that when going down this very steep hill - the curving - it just seemed logical to me then; but there were a few times where I wound up going too fast for my comfort zone and I "ran aground" onto the grass lol! Thank you for these tips - they ARE good and VERY helpful.
thank you katie for all your videos. I just started roller skating for the first time and I can only practice outside.. all your beginner videos are amazing!! I wouldn't be able to do it without you
Love this video! Thank you. The carving looks fun. Also what you said about wheels makes so much sense. I’ve been having a hard time finding a soft wheel that I can still turn on outdoors!
Skating outside is like a punch in the gut after skating indoors LOL. Question for @skatie - my skates have 85A wheels, which were described as hybrid and fine for outside, but I can definitely feel every slight variation in the surface - making me very wobbly - and pebbles take me down. Basically, I feel like I can't skate at all 😞 In your experience, could I get used to 85A outside relatively (I know it will vary by person, but just on average) quickly, or would a gummier wheel be better when outside since I'm still a beginner?
I roll on a 84a outside but not all wheels are created equal. My 84a’s are big, 65mm (Roll-Line Helium) the size helps to absorb the vibration and bump over debris. If you’re rolling a small wheel 57mm for example you’ll lose a lot of that shock absorbing power.
i just got my moxi panther skates and I've been loving ur channel so much! I was told that the moxi wheels can be used for both outside and indoor skating but I'm not sure?
Skatie thanks for your experiences shared! Gives a lot of confidence in learning! I am personally very curious if in this video you wearing an Edea boots, right? If I am wrong , please correct me! Istvan
I've been checking my local park, just when i thought i found a good spot to try skating, i realise it's really uneven, in fact the only smooth place is the skate park, and i'm just learning to skate. Had to go and get soft wheels for my skates, oh well
Finding a good spot outside can be so tricky. Do you have any cycle paths where you are? I’m in the UK and cycle paths here tend to be quite new so nice smooth tarmac.
Great informative video! Quick question, where did you buy your outdoor wheels? I’ve looked online and many I’ve seen are sold out, any recommendations? ❤️
I am having a hard time getting past the fear of skating on a really rough outdoor surface. I have 78a's, but when I tried to skate on rough concrete, I felt like I was going to fall. I found a smoother concrete space, but it's very narrow. So all I can really do is skate forward. I haven't advanced to backwards skating yet. But I noticed today that the 78a's seemed to want to catch a bit on that smoother concrete. So I plan on trying some 82a's tomorrow. Does that sound like it may help? Or should I stick with the 78's?
@@Skatie my 78a wheels are 60mm, but I have a feeling it's more me that's the problem than the wheels. I don't think I'm balanced properly or something. I feel very awkward and unstable.
78A seems to be the general industry standard for outside wheels. I have lots of random wheels accrued over time so some are more unusual and no longer available unfortunately.
I learned it indoors on weels from 78 i want it softer for outside but i don’t feel differens because i learned it inside on soft weels what should i do? Buy even softer weels?
Hello! My rollerskates are Fila with 54 mm diameter wheels and 80A durity. Also, they have Abec5 bearings. When I try to roll on rough surfaces, I tend to fall or to go unsmoothly, quite visibly. How can I fix this once and for all? Thanks in advance!
i just got my first skates and the wheels are 85 on the durometer. im trying to skate on an old basketball court but i still feel like its too rickety. should i save up for soft wheels or is it just up to balance? (i started skating 3 days ago, i can only go forward and do basic bubbles) thanks :)
If the surface is old it might just be quite rough. Perhaps a softer wheel might help 78a but it could be that it’s maybe just too bumpy as going to a 78 won’t make that much difference. If the wheel is small that can make a difference too, bigger wheels can cope with the lumps and bumps better 60-65mm
Wheels sometimes have some numbers around the edge or you may be able to check the shop listing. What skates do you have I may be able to find out for you.
These are really old wheels from the 90s but I’d recommend Roll-line Helium wheels, Airwaves, or Radar Energy for outside skating. For outside, look between 78a to 85a and ideally a larger wheel between 60 - 65mm.
That shouldn’t be a problem unless the wheel looks like it is starting to crack. But it’s not unusual to get little marks and chips from outside skating.
I have a Webaite with wheels recommendations, for outside skate ideally you need between 78a and around 83a for a comfortable ride. Bigger is better too so 65mm - 60mm
The last two times I attempted going down a hill, it wasn't pretty, not because of skill as much as, well, they're skates, am I right? I got the wobbles and went flying! Never ever again 🤣
Hills and stones are a skaters nemesis! Those hills can really catch a skater out. Bend your knees so you’re super close to the ground already. That way If it goes wrong you can bail to your knee pads.
@@Skatie it is! I have ice skated on outdoor ice and noticed that its quality is much worse than indoor ice due to unpredictable weather. The wheels you describe are ok at an 80a but they sound quite small for outside. A bigger wheel is better outside 60-65mm.

Yup. I wear an 84a outside. I’m prefer a slightly harder wheel as you have more roll than a 78a
