  • Zubir Said: The Singapore City Council Song and National Anthem / Bernard Tan, arranger / Chan Tze Law, conductor · Janani Sridhar, soprano · Orchestra of the Music Makers · Vocal Associates Festival and Children's Chorus · Queensland Festival Chorus · Perth Symphonic Chorus · The Winthrop Singers / Esplanade Concert Hall / 11 July 2015.
In 1958, Mr Zubir Said was commissioned to compose a song for the City Council of Singapore to use at its official functions. The song was meant to be a patriotic song in Malay, with the theme of "Onward Singapore". The song made its debut at the re-opening of the renovated Victoria Theatre on 6 September 1958.
The City Council Song had a longer verse and melody than the present day National Anthem. Its longer verse encouraged the people of Singapore to help each other and to live in peace and harmony, in addition to progressing towards happiness.
After Singapore became a self-governing state under British rule on 3 June 1959, the City Council Song was further refined and it was adopted as the state National Anthem. Specifically, eight bars from the verse were removed and the lyrics were made more concise.

    Mari kita ra'yat Singapura,
    Bangun dengan bersatu sama-sama.
    Rukon damai dan bantu membantu,
    Supaya kita sama-sama maju.
    Kita hidop aman dan sentosa
    Kerja sama menuju bahagia
    Chita-chita kita yang mulia:
    Berjaya Singapura!
    Mari-lah kita bersatu
    Dengan semangat yang bahru
    Samua kita berseru:
    Majulah Singapura!
    Majulah Singapura!
    Mari-lah kita bersatu
    Dengan semangat yang bahru
    Samua kita berseru:
    Majulah Singapura!
    Majulah Singapura!
Terima Kasih to late Pak Zubir for this 'unchanted melody' to the world's most prosperous island.

This was the full anthem Zubir said created but for a normal and easy sang anthem the original became the city council anthem and the shorter version became our anthem

wow, both previous and recent lyrics of this anthem are totally beautiful, feels so grateful that i'm totally understand the meaning of lyrics (because bahasa is my daily and native language btw) which is awesome and now.. we can see that Singaporean did it well, living toward happiness and unite with a new spirit.

Previous no the city council anthem was supposed to be the anthem but it was to long so the shorter version was chosen the longer anthem lyrics will be too hard to sing for children so they removed some words like ‘Supaya’ and ‘Sentosa’

Better the Original City Council Song be served as the full, longer version of the anthem, the current be designated as the shorter.
Just imagining the longer version played during flag ceremony.

A truly rousing and uplifting National Anthem. Beautifully sung with both an outstanding orchestra and choir, conducted with passion and dignity. The People of Singapore I am sure must feel justly proud both of it and themselves when they sing it.

I'd think it'd be more impactful if the pre-independent version be arranged in G major to show how easier it was that it was brought down to F major in the current version.

Yes. The first version is the original version (longer), actually composed by Zubir Said, but the second version is the official version (shorter), slightly different from the original arrangement
