My Great Grandfather was killed by the Germans in North Africa, leaving my grandmother and her brother without a father as small children. I was mostly raised by my grandparents due to family issues, so I grew up with a very passionate hatred for Germany and for Japan... Especially Japan, actually. I visited Germany in 2019 and had my world views turned upside down. Germany is a beautiful country with beautiful people, some of the kindest people I have yet seen on my travels. Lovely hospitality and a fascinating nation. I felt embarrassed for my prior views on the German people, for I now see that a people can make amends for their mistakes in the past. I have not yet been to Japan, and I admit that I do still feel a deep anger towards Japan, but I know that if I am to overcome this I must visit the country and see the people. Update: I don't know how I ended up back here again, I forgot that I even made this comment, but now I'm dating a Japanese girl and have been to Japan. I really liked it, so, I'm on a redemption arc I guess

The melody was composed by Haydn, and used by him twice: first, as a hymn to the Emperor and second, as the principal melody in his Emperor string quartet, No 62, and both in 1797.
A hymn sort of, but really it was conceived as a national anthem. Haydn spent much of the period 1791/92 and 1794/95 in England and heard God Save the King often and had noted the impact, so on his return, he wrote Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser for his own country (the Habsburg Empire or Austria if you like); it’s appropriation by Germany came later. The new Emperor’s song was an immediate hit, so as you say, he used it as the theme for a lovely set of variations in the string quartet Opus 76 No 3.
@@elaineblackhurst1509 an excellent comment, and thank you for it. a Canadian, I think of 'God Save the Queen' as a hymn more than as an anthem, for example (we have 'O Canada' for the latter purpose). given Haydn's bi-national purposes, perhaps he conceived it the same way. again, thanks
@@charlesbarber8166 Not sure I’ve understood your point: God Save the King is clearly a national anthem, as is Gott erhalte and the national anthem every other nation - they are not hymns.
@@elaineblackhurst1509 Hi Elaine. Thank you for yours. To me, a hymn honours a person or a god, and an anthem a nation or a trans-national entity. When I was growing up, we sang two such songs, in this order: God Save The Queen (Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada), immediately followed by O Canada, an apostrophe to the nation as a whole. I'm sure others see the matter differently, and fair enough. Best wishes.
The music comes from the second movement of that Emperor Quartet. It's actually a theme and variations movement, and this is the main theme. Haydn originally wrote it in G Major, but it is most often sung in Eb Major.
Und die Melodie unserer Nationalhymne war mal die Melodie der österreichischen Kaiserhymne (Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze...) und stammt von Österreichs großem Komponisten Joseph Hayden. Tja, tausend Jahre gemeinsame Geschichte hinterlassen Spuren.

Beautiful hymn. Proud to be about 11% German ancestry and feel a kinship with those Germans who have been godly people; the theologians, scientists, the great musicians and those who gave their lives to save the lives of others, as did the members of the White Rose. Thinking of Beethoven who had a progressive spirit politically. Not denying that there were also obviously fascists and bad people (as in every country, as in the US today) but I feel kinship not with them but with the German people of good heart
Only someone who was fortunate enough to have lived consciously during his reign can truly appreciate what a great politician we have lost in this man. The best German head of government of the 20th century. He will be missed forever and we should all measure by him who come after...
I was a teen back then, today I know whom we have lost. Having understood to some extent what it meant to have survived the war and having to build a new society and a new country I now see what men of high calibre many of them were whether it be Helmut Schmidt, Franz-Josef Strauß, Hans-Dietrich Genscher etc.

Excellent response, and I thankyou for taking the time. Whenever I found myself travelling in Europe, I would go to great lengths to avoid traveling though Germany until one year I was required to attend a convernce there. I have rarely been to such a nice and welcoming country. I was helping there much younger people around, and we had had such a time on our journey across the UK and the France but all was plain sailing once in Germany. So when asked what do you think of Germany my reply was oh it's wonderful: The people are so friendly and helpful, everywhere is clean and beautiful, both in towns and country-side everything works well and the trains run on time. This last was delieved into a ringing silence. So I added, Please tell me I only said the last one in my head and not out loud? One of the young people who I had been helping said, "why what's wrong saying that the trains run on time. They do run on time it's wonderful" Everybody laugh to which I replied, "someone will tell you what's wrong with a nice Jewish boy saying that although I meant no harm by it" But Germany is one of the best countries I have ever been to.
I would add that it's still an occupied country. By the US army. No peace treaty has been signed. Their "Basic Law" was dictated under the guidelines of the Allied winners. People were not convened.
Many germans were also killed by american soldiers. It was a war. So it is normal that people die in wars...

Japan and Germany have nice values in Common. Greetings back to Japan!
I hope I will visit one day your great country!
@@charlesbarber8166
Not sure I’ve understood your point: God Save the King is clearly a national anthem, as is Gott erhalte and the national anthem every other nation - they are not hymns.

My Grandma also had her funeral ceremony there. Can’t believe that Helmut Schmidt had it there too!

Excellent response, and I thankyou for taking the time. Growing up in the Lutheran church in America, back in the 1950s, I was familiar with the tune as it was used as a Christian hymn entitled: "Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken." It is interesting to note that it is stated in the hymnal that it is an "Austrian Hymn," I suppose because, its composer, Haydn was Austrian. I have always known it, however, as "Deutschland Uber Alis," ie. the Fatherland Over All.
Once again, thanks.

German made anything is great, let alone their anthem. So moving, this music. Nothing short of perfection.
They do run on time it's wonderful" Everybody laugh to which I replied, "someone will tell you what's wrong with a nice Jewish boy saying that although I meant no harm by it"
But Germany is one of the best countries I have ever been to.
Danke. ...das wissen wir alle. Set hass muss aufhoren.....danke
I would add that it's still an occupied country. By the US army. No peace treaty has been signed. Their "Basic Law" was dictated under the guidelines of the Allied winners. People were not convened. Germany is not a sovereign nation. United Nations Charter labeled Germany and Japan enemy countries, and has not been changed or reviewed.
