The only time I saw my dad cry was to this song. He was a Green Beret and was away when a young man in our church was killed by a land mine in Vietnam. My dad was asked to bring his body home. My dad was standing in the aisle of the church with the casket behind him. My grandpa was the pastor of the church. My family was seated in the balcony. He was standing there in his dress uniform larger than life itself. He tried but he couldn’t hold back the tears. I’m guessing he felt some guilt. My dad did four tours in Southeast Asia, cracked two vertebrae in his neck and fractured his skull in a parachuting accident and lived to see another day. The soldier was there for four months and didn’t survive. He also joined the Army because of my dad. I learned that day my dad was a human being. He was still my hero then and now. He’s been gone five years. I miss him but I find strength in knowing that I will one day see him again. I couldn’t listen to the song without crying until he passed away. @@gopherfan118 Yes. The last line has been re-written for our times (and the MTC used the new line, not the original.) My parents brought their children up Christian. Mom loved and cherished all holidays but Christmas had a special place in her heart. Every year she would dust off the albums that she felt best embodied the spirit of this holy day. The number one album was of course the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The next best was Neil Diamond’s album “Christmas Songs”. Neil’s vocals always managed to light-up, on Christmas day, his gritty soul and flair for nuance. So, to the Tabernacle Choir and Neil Diamond, my extended family salutes you for providing spirituality and joy within our hearts.

I've seen my share of performances of this song, and this! Is THE BEST! IT CANT POSSIBLY BE ANY BETTER! The subtle crescendos and the power of the message. God Blessed America 🇺🇸. Let's not let him down! 🙏 pray for our UNITY!
Its "let us die to make man free" this song honors the sacrifice in the cival war. Changing this line detracts from these sacrifices, and the neccessities of them
The main message of that line is that people are not afraid and willing too sacrifice their life for the freedom of others. It is really twisting the message.
Yes, this was a later change. Point well taken, Robert. Hero's have "lived" AND hero's have "died" to make man free, some have left their blood on the battle field like many of our fathers, and some have died, and not come home, all hero's, rest in peace, all.
When 'die' is changed to 'live' the song is a little less militaristic and applicable as just a hymn. I think that 'die' is much more impactful however.
Very proud of these young men and women of West Point. They volunteered to keep peace and keep us safe. Thank you for your service you will soon embark on . Please stay safe .

That dynamic control starting at 00:42 until 00:49 is just absolute perfection.
Agreed! OUTSTANDING!
Noticed that too, really good
Yes, Sir......
It absolutely is........
Some years back, I was driving out to California. I stopped in Salt Lake City. I learned that on many evenings, you could watch the Choir rehearse at no charge at the Tabernacle Temple.
o_O
Every Thursday evening for sure (before and, we hope, after Covid) in the Tabernacle or in summer in the Conference Center on Temple Square.
@@leezurligen227 awesome, I need to hear them some day when I visit the west
Don’t you have to be Mormon to enter a temple though?
@@81mysharona The Salt Lake Tabernacle is not a temple, it’s just a large auditorium where conferences or concerts are held. It is the dome-shaped building next to the Salt Lake Temple.
God bless the United States of America,at he show all Mercy for our ignorance, and what's going to happen in the future, may he guide us well and save us from damnation!
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
He has loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on (gloria)
Glory, glory, hallelujah (gloria)
Glory, glory, hallelujah (gloria, gloria)
Glory, glory, hallelujah (gloria)
His truth is marching on
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps
I can read His righteous sentence in the dim and flaring lamps
His day is marching on
Glory, glory, hallelujah
Glory, glory, hallelujah
Glory glory hallelujah
His truth is marching on
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me
As He died to make men holy let us live to make men free
While God is marching on
Glory, glory, hallelujah
Glory, glory, hallelujah
Glory glory hallelujah
His truth is marching on
Glory, glory, hallelujah
Glory, glory, hallelujah
Glory glory hallelujah
His truth is marching on, amen, amen
Julia Ward Howe, William Steffe
"As He died to make men holy let us live to make men free"
What an incredibly beautiful lyric!
Julia Howe said she dreamed the entire lyrics while sleeping, woke up and wrote them down.
Thank you. 💝🦁🐑🕊💫
Thanks for posting the lyrics.
Thank you for writing the lyrics I was able to sing along ❤️
I am from Wales and I would just like to say, that is an awesome choir!
That's something, coming from Wales. Thank you.
I AM VERY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN.. GOD BLESS OUR COUNTRY, GOD KEEP IT SAFE FROM HARM FROM FOREIGN & DOMESTIC ENEMIES.. AMEN..
Two great American institutions and one great song.
they sung this song bevore they fighted and died for others.. every time . thank you
The United States of America is the Greatest Nation that has ever been! Look how far we have come! God Bless America!
And we have more miles to go to be "a perfect union".
@@1m2rich The United States is made up of people. People are not perfect. We have made progress and God willing, we will continue to do so.
This was awesome! The greatest version of this song I’ve ever heard. It penetrates right to the heart of American patriotism. God bless America. 🇺🇸
Wow! Those Mormons sure can sing! That West Point band is terrific!
The accuracy of these singers brought me to tears!!!!!! JOYFUL TEARS!
This is so profoundly beautiful and evocative. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is second to none, and the West Point Band outstanding as well. Plus that setting? Must have been an unbeatable experience.
If I was into the bucket list thing - only thing I would have on my bucket list would be to see a concert by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir live in person. Have loved their music ever since hearing it first as a kid, more than 60 years ago.
Actually it is the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. In 2018, the leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints asked people to stop using the terms "Mormon" and "LDS".
@@DivinePeace1102 And no one cares. It will always be the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
@@JohnMichaelson Hey, you should care, I go to the Church of the Jesus of Latter Day Saints and it is something important to us. We are always being persecuted because when people say Mormon it refers to many different Mormon churches and people hear a Mormon did something bad and instantly associate it with us.
@@fallenwarrior3946 Relax. I'm a member of the same Church and the important thing here is that people feel the spirit of the Lord and the Patriotic spirit while watching this.. Not arguing about names.
@@fallenwarrior3946 Hard to claim persecution when you try to suppress gays.

This is a bot comment 🤣
I read that as u sus u sus lol
LET BLM AND ANTIFA HEAR IT LOUD AND CLEAR THEN PUT THEM ALLL IN JAIL SO THEY CAN THINK ABOUT WHERE THEY WERE BORN
There are certain American patriotic songs that are meant to be sang only in harmony to honestly sound like they have meaning. Which is this one, America the Beautiful, and The Star Spangled Banner.
*Outstanding. This song, particularly when combined with the magnificent power of this choir, stirs my soul...*
*”...He died to make men holy; Let us live to make men FREE...”*
*Tears in my eyes...*
With the present rough times, we really need this song. Thanks so much.
A Very Moving Hymn, I’m Australian and love this version by the Morman Tabernacle Choir
Legend has it, when Lincoln was first presented this song intron of the Army of the Potomac he broke into tears, cant say I blame him
I'll be at Gettysburg this July for the 160th Anniversary of the Battle. This will be in my mind and watching and marching on the battlefield with the hymn on my lips. HIS TRUTH IS MARCHING ON!
Sung originally by Northerners during the US Civil War... which freed slaves.
Outstanding performance.
Lol, the hell they did.. 5 northern states practiced slavery and Lincoln never signed the emancipation proclamation and called blacks sub humans

Just to get all these people to take a breath and phrase at the same time - not easy. Well done.
My parents brought their children up Christian. So, to the Tabernacle Choir and Neil Diamond, my extended family salutes you for providing spirituality and joy within our hearts.
.... WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN I HEARD A CHOIR OF ANGEL'S!!!💌❤️
I get teary eyed every time.
From the UK, that was extremely good.
Can only imagine the emotion of how that performance experienced live felt.
This is the most beautiful choir in the world
A lot of people may be pissed on America and Americans for their government policies outside their country, but don’t forget Americans have given so much for the mankind, and things we can’t think to live without in this gen...The GOAT 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I was part of the All State Regional Choir directed by Charlie Nelson in I think 1973. We sang this. It still remains as one of the greatest experiences of my life. Something very spiritual happened between all of us in that choir that day. I will never forget it. The best of the human spirit.
Boy, we could sure use some of this spirit and unity at this time in our history. God bless you all.
This song always gives one who is in despair facing nihil of life, the Courage and Hope to fight on.
We need more of this spirit to survive! God Bless the USA!!!
I've seen my share of performances of this song, and this! Is THE BEST! IT CANT POSSIBLY BE ANY BETTER!
The subtle crescendos and the power of the message. God Blessed America 🇺🇸. Let's not let him down! 🙏 pray for our UNITY!
OH.....THANK YOU to WEST POINT and to the Tabernacle Choir!!!!! WONDERFUL!
They truly sing this song magnificently. I was able to witness them singing this in person the chills were overwhelming
The choir is all volunteer. Each LDS ward has a choir. Many members are very musically talented.
Like the Piano Guys. They are on TH-cam. Check them out.
Let us die is reserved for military servicemen. Those singing are civilians. They offer respect.
@@bonjovi2792 Source: dude trust me
Very proud of these young men and women of West Point. They volunteered to keep peace and keep us safe. Thank you for your service you will soon embark on .

The West Point band are not cadets but professional musicians. Most have a masters degree in some kind of music and they are in the Army.
Wonderful song and powerful voices and music.....Much respect and admiration from your Canadian brothers up north. May god bless our countries and friendship.
Thank you so much for capturing this Heavenly performance!

Now known as the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square! Spectacular!
I just listened to this wonderful song after listening to music from Ireland and Mexico. We need to remember that we are all the same, we are here to make each other better, we are all no better than the next person, I pray each day for peace and a better world for my children and I'm sure we all want the same thing. Hey, as one of my good friends used to say before he passed away "make it a good day". Gloria V. (and if you are a good tennis player meet me out at the courts!)
