Long Jump Technique - Landing for Maximum Distance

  • How you land in the long jump can mean the difference of 1-2 feet. If you want to maximize the distance of your jumps it's essential to master the proper landing technique.
    In this video you'll learn the key steps to improving your landing as well as factors during the air that influence how you land. Coach Baily talks about the importance of proper posture in mid air and how looking down to see where you are landing results in the chest falling which has a significant impact on your landing.
    Olympic bronze medalist Janay DeLoach Soukup teaches and demonstrates proper landing mechanics including: how to collapse into your feet, proper posture as well as how to avoid common errors such as dropping the feet.

    I had a meet a bit ago and was put on long jump by my coach. I’m telling you I legit had like only 2 practices worth of training so I was absolutely shitting my pants. I got there, I was embarrassed as hell, because I was the only one who didn’t really know what he was doing, I didn’t know where to start from so my coach put me to run and we got a scuffed measurement. It was time and I was the 3rd jumper. No experience and no expectations, gave it all I had. Ended up getting 1st with a lucky jump of 6.01m (19 3/4ft) 😭. It was def lucky, but this year I’ll prove it wasn’t I swear! LETS KEEP GRINDING! 🔥

    When I was 14yo(9th grade) my P.E. teacher wanted me to do long jump and I managed to do 5.30meter at peak but with a poor form.
    I'm now 16 and since the pandemic there weren't any competition where I'm at and I didn't get to practice much in my jumps after 2 years of not jumping we got to do a lesson of long jump practice and first jump I did 4.30 and on the 2nd 4.60 and finished with a 3rd jump of 4.95, I hope I'll manage to improve because my teacher wants me to participate in future track & field competition and this video really helped thanks!

    Advice in list (mainy for myself lol)
    Don't look down; head and chest up
    Once you reach your maximum height, bring your knees to your chest (make sure to sti keep your chest up tho) and bring your toes out, hands forward and take a step like you are puling your pants up(if this doesn't make sense, go to 2:07 for the position)
    Ideal landing is on your butt. As you come down from extension bring your heels into the pit and collapse your butt into your feet
    DON'T DROP FEET

    I watched this last night, scared for my meet today. I was getting 13s so far this season when my PR is 15. (I’m a ninth grade female) I was wondering what I was fully doing wrong, THIS VIDEO WAS SO HELPFUL. I literally thought about this video all day and at the meet! I fixed my starting posture, made sure I was balanced, aligned my hips properly, got my knees higher, extended longer, AND (these two things were the main fixtures) made sure to scoot my butt to my feet instead of landing with my feet and I kept my head up!! last meet I got 13 ft 3 in and today I got 13 ft 10 in, 13 11 in, and 14 ft 5 in!! Thank you so much for this video, I genuinely appreciate you so much. I forgot to lift my head until the last one, when my coach reminded me. Crazy how much it made a difference! THANK YOU AGAIN!!! ❤❤

    Sir it was a great video , but I have a question,
    The question is from which foot we had to jump ..

    • @OutperformOfficial
      @OutperformOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Experiment with both and see which foot feels best. After a few jumps it should be pretty clear which one you are most comfortable with.

    Is a pr of 11 feet good for a 4’11 13 year old? (Idk if this matters but I also weigh 75 pounds)

      @@aabhooshancollections9883 I choked and only jumped 16 feet 😐 but on the brightside I ran a 10.3 second 100m, a 22 second 200m, and a 53 second 400m, which were all PR's. Just a bummer that this was my last high-school track meet

    can you answer why the lean back before running?

    • @OutperformOfficial
      @OutperformOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a personal preference and part of the routine. Each jumper will have their own, similar to what a basketball player does before shooting a free throw.

    Recently i landed my first jump on my butt. Though the ground on the pit was very hard and i felt my tailbone to ache and now I cant sit properly. I saw in the video that the athletes were landing on the cheeks not directly on their butt. Did i do something wrong or is this pain normal?

    • @OutperformOfficial
      @OutperformOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is not normal, you should not be landing on your tailbone. Your legs and sand should absorb most of the impact. Pain is an indicator that something is wrong, please don't ignore it.
      Try doing the "hop hop land" drill to get comfortable with pain free landing.

    Hey thank you very much for the info. When i landed 4.6 m my teacher said something is wrong he cant jump this high with his teddy bear like body. I felt offended but brushed it off now i wanna show him that i can land 4.6 m everytime and not just once. Because after that jump i landed 3m and then he said that seems right. Ofcourse he was joking but im gping to prove him wrong and prove myself wrong because im going to destroy my record.
