  • In this video we take a look at some common faults that happen with the long jump. This is done by looking at one of my jumpers - Leigh. We take a look specifically at some of her jumps from the recent British Trials and see how these faults can effect distance.
I explain why these can happen and more importantly what you can do to avoid them. Various drills and technical improvements are shown/discussed,
I hope that in doing this analysis you will be able to identify some issues that you may have and have a good idea as to what to do to avoid them happening and train them out.
    The faults dealt with are:
Run-up structure (focus on not starting quickly enough)
Dropping out of position in the middle of the run-up
    Dropping knees doing into board
Jumping into the penultimate stride and slowing the take-off
Difficulty with getting a take-off drive and insufficient hold of the free leg in advance of the hips before going into the hitch-kick
    Starting the hitch-kick too soon
    Compromised landing

I just discovered your videos. My daughter is 10 and she jumped 4.55m as her personal best so far! She wants to learn hitch kick, or hang, do you think she’s too young for that? We will be referring to your videos for drills and tips, so thank you!

      That's a good distance for a 10 year-old!
I start to teach specific techniques to young jumpers once they are "ready" i.e. if they have a good take-off and sprint running form. The take-off is key no matter the technique used so if you feel your daughter has a good take-off, then I would start to teach a specific mid-air action. And thanks for the future support!

Hi I've watched a lot of your videos and they have been very helpful but I am in need of slightly more specific advice. In high school I jumped 4 times a week (I did long, triple, and pole vault) and only sprinted once a week. Despite this I consistently got faster and jumped farther running a 12.32 100 and long jumping 5.86 meters. I am now in college and have been focusing on sprints with the goal of increasing my speed on the runway to break 6 meters however despite doing structured sprint workouts 4 days a week for months now I am jumping worse and my 100 has not improved in the slightest.

Well, I can only use my experience to suggest that potentially there is a miss-match in terms of the 100m speed you are trying to develop and that required for the jumps. I often find that people try to get faster by targeting the 100m ... however, speed for the long and triple jump is different. Different in the way it is structured (thin run-up). And crucially different in terms of how max velocity or optimum velocity for the long and triple needs to be allied to taking off. There are specific mechanisms that need to be used in oder to achieve an optimised long and triple jump take-off. This explains why 100m sprinters (unless they have a jumping background) cannot just rock up at the pit and jump far. Sprint speed as I said is different to long and triple jump "sprint speed".
The run-up is the key sprint for the jumper.
Now, regarding not getting quicker ... this simply could be because you are not doing the right sprint training.
You may be running longer reps (and more sub-maximal max velocity runs) and this decrease in speed and increase in volume may negatively be impacting your sprint speed progression.
Without seeing what sprint work you are doing I can only surmise re the latter.
One more thing - consider what type of jumper/sprinter you are and what type of training you benefit from. We don't respond the same to the same stimulus. Also to get faster needs rest and recovery for adaptation to take place - four sprint workouts and other training (??) may not be allowing that adaptation to take place.
Hope this helps and good luck.
