1971 American Pipe Vise Restoration - Restoration Videos
In this video, you will watch an Erie Tool Works branded American made pipe vise which was made in March 1971 get restored.
Are you ready to see everything possible to be done in a pipe vise restoration video be done in detail? I first start dismantling every piece in this vise, vise the which served many years but then were thrown aside. I immerse every single piece in rust remover and let it rest there for a day. The reason for this is because the product is made out of steel. If it was cast iron I would let it sit for a less amount of time. After I took them out of the rust remover, all the pieces were completely free of rust. After a brief brushing and then neutalizing with water, I sandblast them. In meanwhile, I used my mobile phone as a second camera, I hope you like it. After sandblasting, I realized 71-3 was written on the inside of the piece holding the top jaw. I understood that it was made in March 1971. Not too old, but a beautiful 53 year old vise. I file out the pins which are used to lock in the jaws. And I make the new ones as hidden nuts. Since the handle was bent, I wanted to use the ball parts with the new shaft I am going to make. But because there were deformations and tears on the old ball parts I needed to make a new pair, thus I manufacture a complete new handle out of 3 new parts, made out with a hidden bolt-nut technique. I fill out the later drilled hole on the bottom part of the body with MIG weld. After that, I level out the irregularities found on the both upper and lower parts by heating them up, then doing a leveling. Finally I countersink the bolt holes and sandblast to get it ready for the painting. I disassamble the handle where you use it to squeeze the vise to a table by heating it up, then get it ready for the painting. With the other three parts ready, all the pieces are now ready for the painting session. And I use hammered red paint to paint them. I paint them with a regular brush and a paint roller brush. After the paint dries out, I cold-blue the moving parts. I knew those parts before, so I taped them. I restore the teeth on the bigger shaft and then shine it up to a mirror shine. And after, I do the same with the smaller shaft which helps fastening to a table. Since one small piece is missing from this part, I make a new fitting one. I design it so that two pins would be helping me fix the piece in. I start restoring the upper and the lower jaws. But because these jaws were very hard, I had hard time sanding them by hand. So I used the milling machine. I got a perfect finish on those with final surface grinding, got them perfect as I wanted. I decide not to use the old nuts and bolts. Non of them are original, and they don’t fit well. I begin making square nuts and bolts. I make 8 nuts, 8 bolts total. It was satisfying to create square nuts and bolts which I made in a historically correct way, design-wise.
There will be lots of lathing scenes, I think you will like them. The rough lines of the project were like this. After every piece were ready, I assembled them to reach the picture I wanted to see. I hope this outcome fulfills you. If you liked it, please do like the video, leave a comment and if you are not subscribed, subscribe. I try to read and answer every comment you leave to me. See you in the next project. Greetings to everyone.

Had exactly the same pipe vice in my old workshop, although I preferred to use the chain vice as it gripped better without burring the pipe too much. Fantastic restoration, I'm sure they didn't leave the factory with such quality finishing!
Thanks a lot
This guy deserves at least 1 million subs.
Thank you, I hope in time
Always a good day when you have a new video out. Workmanship is incredible. Thanks for sharing your talents!
Thank you so much Dave
Nice, made in sweet home Pennsylvania. Right around the time I was too.
🙏🏻thanks sir
There’s so many fake restoration channels out there that I am blessed to have found yours. You’ve shown me what real artistry is.
Thanks
He is not "restoring" anything here. He is repairing. It is misleading. Think about it. I am not at all saying that his "repairs" are bad; not in the slightest. All I am saying is that he thinks he's restoring when, in fact, that is not the case. Anytime you have or want to make a new part you lose the moniker of restoration. It is no longer original.
One thing I believe, some pieces were made.
The rest is all doubts.
The author made the piece rustier (easy for these guys make it).
Did he bend some surfaces? Hammered it or applied heat to bend it easier?
I don't know if he is the person doing the new pieces, he never shows his face.
With so many scam videos, each day is harder to believe in really and true restorations, thanks to the scammers.
Lol he ripped off the entire style of video, name and logo from the My Mechanics channel.
@@Nomzai ...I am unsure of the age of his channel, but I would tend to agree with you if this channel is younger.
This pipe vice went from (probably) functional to a work of art and a thing of beauty. I enjoyed the restoration.
I'm glad you liked it.
one of your best, MM. As ever, a tribute to your skills but also to the people who designed and manufactured these excellent devices.
Thank you so much
Some will say it now looks better than when new. Those people are correct. It's a piece of art, worthy to be on display at The Louvre. 👍👍👍
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
I'll never not be dazzled by the artistry of these restorations.
This guys work is really something else. I don't know if I want to call it high level craftsmanship or art. Every piece he does looks like it could sit in a gallery. He has ruined other DIY channels!
Great work by a master craftsman. Thanks!
Thanks Jim
Very detailed and very clean restauration! Great video, cut and editing, too! 👍
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Better than new! Waiting for more of the Mazda restoration videos. I could watch this guy all day! Lol
I guess that car wasn't a Mazda. And I guess I'm not that guy either. I am sad.
My mechanics Datzun 240Z
You'll also note that he didn't do a taste test of a beer in this video --- I'm kidding, I'm kidding! ;-)
When I first discovered Meine Mechanicher's channel, I tought it was another channel of My Mechanics. I'm glad these are from different people as both channels shows great craftmanchip and talent in restauration.
@@LelianWeatherwax, me too, I totally assumed he had two channels!
Awesome resto work on a great old tool! Great skills! Cheers! 😀👍🛠️🔧
Thanks a lot
A pure Master class restoration ❤
Thank you
I was so excited to get on TH-cam and see a new video from you! I love how your stuff is so shiny you have to blur your reflection in it. Amazing job! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thank you so much
So, One thing I really like about your channel is that it's genuine... I see a lot of restoration videos where the person clearly made the piece they are restoring way worse just to make a video. It's very cheesy to me. Please don't ever do that! I'd rather not see a video and wait a while than see a bunch of videos that were clearly staged just to make a video. Don't ever change!!! Love your channel.... My interest is woodworking videos but your channel is really wonderful to watch!
I have paid attention to what you said for 5 years and in my 40 projects. By the way, it is a pleasure to see people like you who know what they want.
What you are referring to are the “fraudsters” who only want us to watch the adverts in their video and not what they are committing fraud with 😠, this restorer is genuine 🤗
What an artist! Absolutely perfect on every detail!
🙏🏻
I agree. This is more than just high level craftsmanship, this guy is an artist. He has directly influenced me with his eye for detail.
That was a great restoration! Your attention to detail is second to none! I wish we could get that great Hammerite paint here in the USA.
Thank you. I heard there is no hammerite america. But this red hammerite is not available in any country other than England.
Show peice vise no doubt. Beautiful finishing as always!
Thanks Matt
A labour of love and a thing of beauty! I love watching your restorations
Thanks sir
Your hard work has rendered the vise to be a show piece
Like, just how many different kinds of files DO YOU HAVE?!?!?!
Great resto!
I think I have more than 100 files that are not the same.

Admiro muchísimo tu trabajo. Y una de las cosas que más me gusta es que, a diferencia de otros restauradores, mantienes tu espacio ordenado y tus herramientas impecables. Un placer ver tus videos!
You are sensitive and meticulous enough to see some details. Thank you.
That came out good, I saw it was made in 1971.....one year younger than me. If only I could be restored as well as those tools. Excellent work.
you are still new, best regards sir
WOAU! This was like magic! Absolutely amazing work!!!

Muchas gracias Guataco ✋
This project was exceptionally good. You have the best tools.
Thanks sir
Marvellous - you couldn't buy a new one that is that attractive and functional.
Lovely work, as usual. Man, after you bought that beautiful vintage car you just forgot us, yours long term fans.
I'm not him, I guess there was confusion. And as for that car. I think he got into trouble.
I believe you're referring to My Mechanics.
Yes, I messed up! Sorry for that. But you too are great, the perfectionism of you both (besides the similar name) confused me. Congratulations from Minas Gerais and do not disappear, as he did. : )
Brilliant as always.

Very good job man
Thanks
Welcome back. Great to see someone restore something to real working order.
Great work with precision
Thanks a lot
Nice finish, but why did you pop a bolt into the hook side of the pipe vice? When I was an apprentice electrician we used to cut threads onto steel conduit and screw it together (I hear the young ones gasping, oh no hard work!!) and that hook end was always free to hook and unhook to hold and release the pipes.
What you describe makes sense for a quick move. but when I do it it makes sense for slow motion. In short, both are correct.
And having the two holes was so you could have either left or right hand opening.
I'm not sure you understand, the hook is on one side of the vise and will either facilitate the use of the hook or will just lock the head in place. It cannot be changed for left or right handed use.@@iwb316
Even the very first photo shows there's no bolt next to the hook and one is never needed.
super!
Thanks for the new video! Awesome job as always. Until now I have never yelled at a TH-cam workshop video. When you were cleaning up the jaws, I started saying “you better not blue them. They better get plated.!” Thankfully all is well - the jaws are plated and my blood pressure is down.
It's nice to be of the same opinion as you.
He's back! 👏
Hi alex
@@meinemechaniker Hi. Toll, dass es mal wieder ein Video zu einer Restauration gibt. Dachte Du kümmerst Dich jetzt nur noch um das Auto. Wobei ich diese Videos auch super unterhaltsam finde. Mach weiter so. Die Art wie Du alles präsentierst ist einfach nur perfekt. Danke!!!

Outstanding resto on this pipe vise. I’ve fitted a few miles of pipe with a vise like that but none as nice as yours. 👍🏼

Very nice work M.M.... Its always good to see you post another video... I wish you made more, but i know it must take a great deal of time to put together a video of this quality.. Well you take care my friend and tell Old Hand I said hello....
Thank you my friend, I will convey your greetings.
Şahane bir işçilik.
Teşekkürler
Please make more videos I really enjoy them, thank you…
I'm glad you liked it
Gut gemacht 🙌
Danke
There was so much the do with that vice. That must’ve taken an incredible amount of time to restore. But, you cease to surprise. Beautiful job. I briefly thought there would be a problem when you started hammering on the heated casting to re-round the base. But, everything worked out. See you on the next project.
thanks. This product is cast steel. so you don't need to worry. I'm glad you liked it.
anyone else notice that he messed up by adding a bolt to the body on the side with the hook? It's supposed to be a pin that can be removed so the vise can open to accommodate longer pipes.
The person who wants it will not use the bolt he does not want. For a right or left handed person. You don't need to get excited.
Jolie travail
Nice restoration 👏👏
Thanks

Who else thinks camera 2 is better? Great work on that vice.
Iphone 😅There is a lot of grain but. Thanks Bruce
Gostava mais tal como estava..😉
Good stuff, and you didn’t paint the stamped letters on the clamp which I think is hugely important. So many restorers do that, and it makes the product look like a sore toe.
thanks dude. Do you like the unpainted letters?
@@meinemechaniker Yes, I can’t remember seeing anything like that painted from the factory. It takes a perfectly restored item look overdone. It also doesn’t look like something that meant to be functional. Hey, but that’s only my opinion 🙂.
Any fire engine would be proud to have that mounted on its back bumper!
😅
I think it's easier for you if you take the pieces in the sandblaster in your hand. and when you do things like straighten the lever from the screw clamp. Make it hot so that the iron is not stressed
Are you German??
Превосходная работа.
