Hi friends. I prepared a restoration video of a German Steppke brand hand drill. At first glance, this product reminds of a pistol. Handle feels like a handle of a pistol. Seemingly, it didn’t show a lacking piece. The paint was chipping away and the metal parts were rusted-jammed due to wear over time and neglect. When I first disassembled the drill, due to the pin that holds down the gear connected to the main arm being drilled in a wrong way I couldn’t disassamble it securely thus I took it out by breaking it. After it is done, the way I do it will make it so that the next person who disassambles it is going to have easier time because I used a longer pin. There was a bearing which was holding down the shaft carrying the chuck, I believed it was swapped at some point. Some steel balls of this bearing were missing and it was standing in a primitive way. With the new measurements I had I changed the bearing to a new one since the old one didn’t quite fit well. This renovation will allow the drill to be used without any problems throughout the years. Since the chuck was the most open piece to the outer enviroment it also was the most jammed and rusted piece. The springs inside were very worn-out. By making new springs for it I achieved a better functioning chuck. After that, according to my usual work schedule I did various applications of leveling, sanding, buffing and nickel-coating. And I also made a new metal washer out of brass. This new washer will minimize the abrasion. I changed the bolt heads as well. The older ones were flat and the holes near the edges, the bolt heads were sticking out. By using a tool of my design I shaped the flat headed bolts into cambered head ones. This might have been the part I liked the most. I heated up and leveled the main arm too. That will create a better turning motion for the user. I did cut off the shaft of the wooden handle part. I re-made the shaft from an existing pin I had. I cold hammered the shaft into the place like it would be done the original way. I sticked to the original color and painted it hammered green. If you would like to ask the brand of the paint, it is Dewilux synthetic paint. I was thinking this to be a shorter video (15-20 mins) but it turned out to be a dynamic 30 minutes long video. I hope you like it. Please don’t forget to leave a like if you liked watching it and leave a comment. I try to read every single comment. Excellent workmanship! I thoroughly enjoyed watching the transformation from rusty, abused condition to excellent usable condition. Keep up the excellent content.

One of my favorite parts is recognizing the items you've worked on in the past. The vise, the anvil, the grinder.... I think that's everything in this video. I love this channel so much, and I'm really excited every time I get a notification about a new video here.
I assume you reside in Germany. Can people send you things by postage to fix? Initially send you a picture, than get an estimate from you and then pay you in your chosen currency?
I've seen and used the newer versions of this tool, especially while living and working in Germany. Very handy for drilling small holes for mounting pictures. Very light and durable. Nicely done sir. 😊
A wonderful work with magnificent details. It's been a long time, my dear friend, it was worth the wait. By the way the color choice is very good; I love old tool colors. Thank you for sharing your talent and detailed craftsmanship. Cheers Gentleman 🥃
Gute Arbeit. Meine einzige Beschwerde ist, dass Sie den gerissenen Griff nicht ersetzt haben, was mich glauben lässt, dass Sie ihn eher aus ästhetischen als aus funktionalen Gründen restauriert haben.
This was an awesome restoration. I like the fact that you took those extra steps that no one else may appreciate, but some of the people who saw you do it. And to the people who dislike the extra steps they can suck eggs! This drill should last to serve other people for a long while. I really like the those screw heads, excellent job! These small hand drills weren't made to drill through concrete for goodness sake, they are mostly for light duty work. I used mine for drilling holes in drop ceilings tiles to install Cat5 for connecting machines in our server room.
Is that the correct bearing? The original was for axial loads, the new one seems to be one for radial loads. BTW Steppke is berlin slang and means "small boy". Nice restoration.
@@meinemechaniker Trust bearing is there for a reason. Its supposed to provide load bearing when you press the damn drill while drilling. You used a normal radial bearing, which isn't made for such loads, sure its rotates nicer and probably works for now, but it will degrade fast if the drill is actually used for drilling. If not this "fumble" I would say a nice restoration, but with this bearing and the "chroming" of shit like gears and pins that are hidden inside anyway - it looked more like a stuff done just to do stuff not to actually fix anything.
Classic vintage cordless antique handrail. In modern terms with an adapter it's a bit driver for drill bits, screws, bolts, etc. I absolutely love my North Brothers 1545 with two speeds and a 5 position transmission. And my other two Millers Falls hand drills. And my North Brothers 1530. Except it's a later one with the crappy chuck probably modernized Stanley took over the company! Because when you try to take screws out with it the chuck opens up. But not with my 1545.
It looks great and you did an excellent job restoring it as well!!! I've never seen one of these before now I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Hervorragend gemacht. Aber das Lager, das Sie entfernt und durch ein Standardlager ersetzt haben, war so, um der Belastung, der der Bohrer standhalten muss, besser standzuhalten und besser zu funktionieren, wenn das Werkzeug verwendet wird.
Your content has improved a lot and is now close to the original. My Mechanic would probably have added a brass sleeve and maybe even a brass washer to the crank’s handle.
I'm very impressed with your confidence with taking the items to pieces! Do you machine off a fraction of the items before nickel plating to retain the dimensions, or to give them a better finish in the end?
A fantastic restoration as usual! One issue I see is the original maker has the steel crankshaft riding inside of the aluminum handle holes. They should have used bronze bushings. I would grease any aluminum-steel contact parts that have movement between the two materials.
At the 7:30 mark, the sequence starts innocently with the grinding machine, followed by the low, rumbling sound of the surface finisher, and ending with high whine of the polishing machine. The sequence recurs throughout the video and makes me chuckle every time, especially towards the end. 😃
