- Our unofficial motto has been “you can’t find the arrowheads if you don’t go”. Some days you go and you still don’t find them but then some days you go and whack ‘em. This was a “whack ‘em” day! Thanks to the guys at PineBeltRelics we were back digging with them on a new ridge and it is HOT! No need to say much more other than we did actually lose count of how many we had found. You guys know what you’re doing. Within minutes you find things that most people will never see. I know you have spent hours doing this to be able to find the places that give you the opportunity to find these things.
It makes me think about how many might have been made by those before us up until about 300 to 400 years ago which is only the blink of an eye geologically. And so it had to have been in the millions. In three years my family gathered two shoeboxes full from a cotton field in Mississippi. But rarely anything as exquisite as the things I saw on this first video I have seen from you.
It won’t be the last one so you’ll probably be getting more comments as I view your work. Your efforts do not go unnoticed.

This brings back so many childhood memories of finding arrowheads playing along the river, some 40 years ago. I wish I could return but it was bought by a company and all fenced off now. I didn't know what I had back then, put it this way, I wish I still had them ! Great video, so fun to watch :-)

Thanks for watching and for the great comment and question. The vast majority of the material we find is Mississippi Citronelle gravel chert. Much of it is heat treated which gives it different shades of red and orange. The Tallahatta quartzite is the whitish translucent material. About one in every 10 or 12 points is made from it.

What makes rivers and streams so productive?
Is it because every time it rains it pushes things closer to the rivers perhaps aided by the fact that hunting would be heavier there because game would be attracted to the water?
BTW you probably know about a guy I watch metal detecting named Aquachigger. He finds a few arrowheads along the way as he finds everything you can imagine from the civil war. So much of that war is laying right where it was when it cannon ball or a bullet landed in the water but the large finds come from river crossings where a wagon fell over or after the battle was over the victor took anything useful and to keep anything else from being used by the other side should they come back to the scene of the battle they would throw everything in the rivers because that was such an easy way for it to just disappear. So you are perhaps walking over treasure that probably is of some interest to you. And I would imagine you have even found some of it already.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the great question. They camped and lived along the waterways because they needed water. You're right every time it rains or every time it floods it washes these points closer to the water until eventually there in the creek. Unlike a LED bullet they will be pushed along by the current somewhat until they reach a spot where they can't go anymore.

Your camera work is always second to none, and always great editing, one of the few people I can watch a long video nowadays without pausing and watching all way through. I can always tell during your get-togethers, y'all have the greatest time's, and of course the finds are just icing a little thicker on the cake, though each time y'all have a great day (just camaraderie/friendships) is really the best part in more aspects then I can speak of shortly. My family has some land with a cave on it. I found a really nice just layin in their. Just wondering if I wanted to dig in there and sift is that legal?

Thanks. Yes, we are actually talking about doing something like that. It may just be a short in a video but we are going to see what we can do.
Sites would be subject to terrain changes over thousands of years . What a site is today likely would be entirely different than it was 5000 years ago. Fresh water is the key.

Love the videos, I've been looking myself, I have this huge hill my house is own an behind me is a really big steep hill that leads to a creek. An have found 2 heartbreakers on the dirt road an alot of chert so I'm thinking there is good potential around my area. Any pointers?
Where there's chips and flakes there are artifacts. If you are allowed, dig right there.

How do you explain finding so many nice points in one location ? Obviously a long, well occupied site but why would the natives leave so many high quality points/tools behind ? Hardly seems possible they were “lost”. Great video and great fun for you guys. Congratulations !
Great question! If a site is good for occupation by one group of people then it is good for another. Think about many occupations over thousands of years, sometimes with many hundreds or even thousands of years between them. These tools were strictly utilitarian to these people. They obviously didn't keep up with them like most folks think they did. Think of them as we think of spent ammunition cartridges or bullets and utility knife blades today. They could make one in a few minutes so they were really disposable.
Burial offerings
Cole, that wouldn’t explain all the brokens. Probably more than 2 to 1, I’d guess several to 1. Seems unlikely burial offerings would include brokens or have gotten broken in a burial.
@@HeartbreakerRelics When I was a little kid back in the 1960s accompanying my dad on digs it hit me--even at that early age--that the Indian nations had been here in such large numbers for so many thousands of years that they had left behind uncounted artifacts in vast layers. Sometimes we would hunt areas where almost every footstep was on top of pottery shards or flakes of flint or bits of worked stone. And when my dad and older brothers would dig and sift there was hardly a load of dirt that didn't produce some kind of ancient relic.
Locate a good spot and you'll find amazing things.
James Smith, I had a couple of “honey holes” like that many years ago in Sumter County, SC. Never dug them though, they were plowed fields that yielded fresh bounty after every spring plowing. They’re both gone now, lost to development.

Thanks and thanks for the question. We use several different cameras but our primary cameras are the FujiFilm XP 90 (we have 3 of them). We also have a FujiFilmXP 50 as a backup and at times we will use GoPros and even our phones. Randy also has a Cannon Rebel DSLR he uses for the "glamour shots" and some filming.
How do yall know where to look for them. I've found many over the years in fields when they get tilled up but i've never known how to locate them like yall do. I mean this is amazing to me.

Also, the leaves do fool don't they? I wonder if the natives sometimes used them as a template, outlining their rocks before knapping.

Why are there so many arrow heads in one area? I am new at watching your digs.
There are so many arrowheads in this area because over the millennia people lived at this site many multiples of times because it was a perfect spot for them, high level ground just out of the flood plain and close to water.

How would one get invited on a creek walk or dig? Big fan of you guys, I’m from Kentucky right on the Tennessee line and Native American artifacts and relics are big in my family. Would love to find some stuff out of state with you guys or maybe even have you join us

Is it possible your on a bank of earth that was part of a barrier with a wall on it that enclosed a large area where a people could defend from others. And what your finding is the remnants of past battles?
Thanks for the question but the simple answer is no. What we're on is a multicultural village site. There were many different groups of people living in this area but there may have been hundreds or thousands of years between occupations. Most of what we find are not weapons but tools of everyday living, knives, scrapers and dart points used for hunting. I'm sure there were some conflicts between group but not on the scale you imagine.
How do you know where to dig? And where the arrow heads lay. I really try to find one.
We use a formula when searching for sites. It's "high level ground just out of the flood plain + water = the possibility of artifacts.

Good question. Look for high level ground close to a water source but just out of the flood plain and dig test holes looking for chips and flakes. It is a process of elimination.
kurt, just go dig up someone's cultural heritage, toss what you found in a shoe box, and shove it under the bed! beauty!

is the "TQ" important because it narrows the timeframe the object was made in?
Thanks for the great question. TQ was used for knapping across all cultural periods so it doesn't narrow the time frame. It's important to us because good knappable TQ is found only in a few counties in Mississippi and Alabama (about 2 counties in each state) and it would have been the largest workable stone they had to work with.
I've been getting into headhunting cause thru my years on our farm there have been hundreds if not thousands of heads taken. my farm here in Arkansas is loaded. my problem is picking a spot to hunt. any tips on whet to start.

I have an anthropology background, and I live in an area with RICH Native American History, Sacramento. Time to hit the bookstore! I see that you Gentlemen have a book; I will be purchasing it! I love to fish; I know of a great many spots where hunting arrowheads may be productive. My Father, God rest his soul, was quite the arrowhead enthusiast! Iv found arrowheads before here and there what's the reason for all of them being in that one location like why leave all that hard work behind?
Thanks for watching and for the comments. Some of them are used up knives and resharpened points. These were utilitarian tools for them. They weren't too terribly hard to make. Besides why carry a bunch of heavy rocks with you when you can pick up more when you get where you are going.

I just saw this post and if it means what I think it means I have to tell you I resent the suggestion of it.
Those artifacts are a part of that land, the only trace left of the people who too were a part of that land for over 10,000 years. They may not be in stratified context, but they are still the static signature of the living humans who were once there. I completely share the fascination and reverence for their culture with you, but you must understand that you've now erased that signature, and taken the power of those artifacts away from that land to horde it for yourself in your home. Please just consider that, and consider that most (not all) indigenous descendants do not appreciate what you're doing, and they would appreciate your repatriating the tools to them. Consider letting the artifacts continue their journey in the ground.

Another uninformed SJW. Do you have any idea how many sites there are across the western hemisphere like this one. Never would there be enough time to investigate them all scientifically. That is why there are no laws against what we are doing. These sites have lost most of their integrity to logging and farming and eventually will be swallowed up by progress. We are saving these artifacts not destroying anything. Go find another cause!

And I get to say what there is time for because I have some common sense. These sites are being bulldozed everyday for construction projects, roads, bridges, houses, etc. The artifacts they destroy are lost forever, destroyed by the equipment. The knowledge that is lost will never be regained. At least what we are saving has some educational value.
