- About 100 years ago a river was dammed for the sake of electricity and isolated a small community from the rest of the town. On this trip, we explore the wilderness in search of the remains of buildings and an isolated family cemetery.

One of the best things about your videos is the amount of respect you show for the places and people who came before you. You set a great example for others.

Cool video. It is awesome out there. I found a really old family graveyard in the woods in Florida, and I don't think anyone had been there in decades. It was covered in underbrush and some of the trees that had grown and covered it over were massive! So I took a chainsaw and some other tools out there and cleaned it all up, and I used the trees I cut done to make a fence like thing around it, It was so grown over that it took me 4 visits, a few hours each time to finish it. there were only 16 graves that I could find/see, and all the stones were just large rocks someone had hand-carved the names and dates into. and they were so decayed that you couldn't make out much of anything, but one did have a date of what I think was 1734. It could have been 1764 or 1784 or 94. For some reason, I just couldn't leave it all overgrown like that. I had to move 6 hours away from there, but I've always had this hope that others came across it and help keep it to where it could be seen.
That is very very sad that, until you stepped up, nobody even seemed to remember they were there 😞
So many families though aren't even told, as time passes, about their family graveyards and heritage for that matter anymore 😢

DUDE! These headstones you keep finding can you PLEASE upload the data to Find-A-Grave. Genealogists like me go to great lengths to find and document graves. You may be finding totally undocumented graves. PLEASE document them if they are NOT yet already on Find-A-Grave. Thank you.

I love old graveyards. What an incredible place. It was really amazing to hear Eddie reading those haunting epitaphs with your beautiful, original musical score and the gorgeous Vermont woods as the backdrops. I shall not forget this video. I can't express how much we enjoy your videos as well as your appreciation for history and nature. If I lived anywhere near Vermont I would love to go on one of these trips with you. Such a wonderful adventure!! At 77 I miss our backpacking adventures into the cascade lakes in Oregon. Lots of fun fishing and walks were had. Going with you into the woods is so refreshing.
I tell you what my friend some may not think it's a big deal but I appreciate that you don't advertise the locations nor even the names of the deceased on the markers, it just shows class and respect, I also find it remarkable folks continue visiting the graves of their loved ones after all the years.
Thank you for being respectful of the dead by not giving up there names but also reading the head stones. It is sad that they where displaced. But not forgotten because of good people like you and Eddie.

Came back to watch again. This is one of my favourite GMMD videos - the music, editing, story, humourous moments (all that Sasquatch banter!), the reverence for the final location. Beautifully done. This part of southern Ontario is full of pioneer-era (mainly mid- to late-1800's) cemeteries, but we don't have the beautiful mountain scenery of Vermont. I do love the poignant epitaphs on many of the stones though - very similar in style and tone to the ones you read out here.
All I need in the morning is coffee, and Green Mountain videos. Highly impressive that you make the music as well. Highly impressive. Giant fan, who has watched ALL of your videos. Most, multiple times.

This video in my opinion was one of your best. It's not always about finding physical things from the past. The quiet sarinity of that resting place speaks volumes about that community and the people that lived there... and you shared that with us. Wonderful job Brad!

This story reminds me of when the Saint- Lawrence seaway was created , villages and communities were also lost. In the Long-Sault parkway in Ontario, while canoeing we came across a submerged church steeple still visible below the surface. We continued following the old remains of the cresting roads through the water. A moving experience.
The American Legion puts American flags on all veterans graves.
The American Legion, is an amazing organization. Non Military folks, often do not understand how important they really are.

You are clearly an educated man. Perhaps you could find a way to petition the state to have all the oil barrels and trash cleaned up. It would be well worth the effort.
Those bunk bed frames are beautifully made and in great condition. Those could even be sold by the state 👍

@@bleirdo_dude I had an experience that I will never forget. It scared me so bad that my hair turned white within 2 weeks of it happening. I don't get scared easily at all. Had never even really been truly scared in my life before that. An that shit terrified me to my core.

Beautiful scenery especially admired all the ferns. I am from Pa. & several years ago a young man earned his Eagle Scout badge by clearing & cleaning up an old graveyard. He researched the history of the family & it was published in the local paper. The area is still being maintained & can be seen off 79S between Washington & Canonsburg. BTW the stones dated were Civil War period.
Love how you respect the people deceased. In a National Forest bothers me people forget that not to be disturbed. Glad to see though families can go up there to attend the cemetery. To me how respect should be. Thank you.
I hope you know and understand what a great job that you do with your videos. After watching them I always take the time to read the comments and I am always impressed with how many people take the time to comment but more with how you have touched people with the respect and knowledge you have for the ones who came before us. Nice vlog. Thanks for sharing. So glad you kept the names hidden. Here in South Georgia, there are ample amounts of old graveyards. One thing I noticed is the amount of welch or conch shells around a lot of the older ones. The ole timers explain that the sound you hear when placed up to ear sounds like the ocean. Made sense. Nothing more calming than to hear the ocean. Have you encountered this? I would like to know your take on this.

Closer to my area there's a section of the Delaware river that was slated for a dam project in the 60s. The govt displaced the homeowners and prepared to flood the valley, but an old law prohibited damming the Delaware and the project (called the Tocks Island Dam) was scrapped. The land is now a protected wildlife area, filled with abandoned homes, towns, graveyards, etc.
Well that was incredibly poignant as well as beautiful. Heart warming to see families keeping the cemetery cared for. Thanks for sharing and for maintaining the privacy of the place. Loved the heron flying off and the aquatic big foot banter. 👍

Wow joking aside, what a beautiful video and such a lovely kept graveyard. Graveyards much closer to towns and cities are looked after less. I loved the epitaphs and how they were read, very poetic. Back in the late 70's I worked with a lady who had the contracts for all town cemetery maintenance. We used to go to the local library in Taunton ma to look up old forgotten cemetery's. We and the crew hand carried our lawn mowers miles into the woods a few times because we had found a War hero's grave-site. Revolutionary, etc,, Made us proud to do it.
@ 6:19 do you know why Blackberries are there in cleanings like that ? There is a few reasons.. one of them is they need open sunlight and more water to grow and Another reason is birds flying over tend to poop in open areas not over trees where they live so the Berrie seeds they eat are dropped in Clearings like that same thing with small animals walking through the clearings.. I learned that when I was in the boy scouts

Also, some power companies will plant them to avoid having to go back so often for maintenance. I worked for Asplundh who had a contract with Dominion power, and our job was to cut down everything, and spread a seed mixture. It was predominantly blackberries, with wisteria and trumpet honey suckle. The intention, is to mitigate tree growth, so the power company doesn't have to go so often to cut down trees. (Or hire others to do so)

Just want to add that , yes, in the old days they did fill basements with garbage that couldn’t be burned or hauled out.
As far as the well. The barrel was placed in it like that to prevent lose of life, human, cattle and wildlife. There is nothing sadder than seeing an animal stuck in an abandoned well.

One reason you probably find berries under the power lines is the birds who eat them will perch on the lines. The seeds will survive the bird's GI tract and are deposited wherever they happen to poop them out. The sunny locale of the power line easement makes a perfect new home for the berries to thrive.

May God Bless you! I discovered a great uncle Enos Guiles in an abandoned cemetery in Kansas where a farmer was storing bales of hay. I pleaded with the owners to remove the hay, repair the fence and clean up the place. Enos was only a teenager when he died and he has been in this farmers field along with some other graves for over 140 years. The local residents got together and gave it a good mowing, got the head stones repaired. I reside in Metro Atlanta and sadly there are so many abandoned cemeteries here.
Loved the music during the cemetery visit, it was very haunting and very suitable. Great video guys thanks for taking time to bring it to us.
